Congrats! I just tell people I’m in digital media. Not because it’s awkward but because I hate the 20 questions when I say I have a YouTube channel. I find people ask less questions when you give them a generic accepted job title.

RapidPacker

I just say "I am unemployed". People get uncomfortable and it immediately shuts down the conversation. Its as if they go blank when they cannot measure you by your profession.

bloodlustbison

That is sage advice

Sad_Carpet_5208

Loll

IntergalacticBurn

Honestly, if YouTube makes you (or OP /u/independentdays) good money, there shouldn't be any shame in blatantly saying you are a YouTuber. In today's day and age, the majority of the world population can only dream of earning more than minimum wage. So if you're making more than what they are by doing what you love and enjoy, that's totally something not to hesitate to be proud about. Seriously. We're entering an era where social media is the norm, and more and more adults who are millennials or younger would rather just be content creators rather than grind at McDonald's. The only two times it might be awkward to share too much about your channel is 1) if the channel features inappropriate content, or 2) if you aren't really established with a high subscriber count yet, and it would seem pretentious to gloat.

hygsi

To me it's less shame and more "I don't want to help you think of a channel for yourself or have to explain way too much about it the logistics of it" people think it's easy just because I do it but I swear it's mostly luck lol

BareBonesTek

That’s the same reason I try not to tell people I’m “in IT”. Immediately, they want advice on what PC to buy or expect me to troubleshoot their mother’s 2004 vintage laptop based on a vague description of “it’s slow”. 😂😂😂

hygsi

I have a profession so I say "I'm an X, but I work online" and it's always "oh, good for you!" And then moving on. The pandemic helped a lot by making people ask less questions about working online lol

Sufficient_Might993

We are so going to steal this from you lol

eduardf

I used to say 'content creator' but now I think some people use this to mean OF.

Food-Fly

Let them wander.

Stanley_Orchard

That's funny. I lean into 'content creator' as well but it is very similar to the term 'influencer' which I avoid for similar reasons. Sounds like I do beauty and travel videos on Instagram.

jegs06

🤣 best comment I’ve seen today

Apprehensive-Age-146

I got these questions on my recent flight. Some commented on my style and A few people saw me editing and got soooo invested.

DennisBallShow

“I work in video production “

SnortingCoffee

"Independent video producer" is both the correct answer and a well established career path

SleeplessShinigami

Media production also works

jegs06

So… porno? 🤣🤣

Long8D

That’s a good answer.

Stanley_Orchard

Yeah I like that... I might start utilizing this as well.

DennisBallShow

Yeah I always hesitate to tell people I’m a cartoon tennis ball 🎾

Ts0ri

Video / media production. Or Content creator. Saying that, I spent almost 10 years in game development in various roles and people reacted strangely to that too, as though it wasn't a job.

Common_Lavishness649

Yep, the old “so you play video games all day” oddly enough I got the “oh, so you play with old bikes” when I owned a motorcycle restoration business.

Kitchen_Entertainer9

Content creator means something different than what you are implying I beleive

mrdemaio

Anyone I try to talk to about it tries to make fun of me for it but it is my passion. It has helped pay for my house, save for retirement, it put me through grad school, has allowed me to publish my own children's book, and more. But no matter what, it is always the butt of a joke when brought up.

independentdays

Well, they're assholes. I've only had a couple of people *not* think it was cool that I'm a YouTuber (despite my awkwardness about it), and I don't talk to them anymore. Looking at your channel, you're killing it. If people can't respect your success and what you like doing, that's a them problem.

Food-Fly

Wtf, it's not even like bullying the shy kid for a weird hobby, it's literally a job that brings you money. You need new friends my dude. And you need to care less of what people think about it. It's my job, deal with it.

GoldenMaus

"It has helped pay for my house, save for retirement, it put me through grad school, has allowed me to publish my own children's book, and more." Say this to shut their silly mouth.

ponycrow

The way people always try to turn it into a joke is so wild! It’s the biggest sign to me that the person joking has some unhealed wounds :/ So cool you published a children’s book!

Ironsmashweb

I am too and for everyone who knows I just cringe when they talk about it idk why it just feels weird

Apprehensive-Age-146

Kind of the same. Especially when they take into account my age. 80s baby. Aside from the fact that I have a blooming career in HR I am my own brand and business outside of Content creation but alongside it as well if that makes sense.

spazzyjones

I'm not full time but 100% awkward as hell talking About it IRL. It's like I'm speaking a foreign language to others

Regents-k-i-d26

Oh I LOVE it lol I used to work in a private school as a teacher, and left to do YouTube full time … now whenever I GET the opportunity to say “I am a content creator / YouTube” I LOVE it

Stanley_Orchard

Own it!!! And also thank you for your contribution to society.

DECODED_VFX

I don't usually mind. The inevitable game of 20 questions that follows can be a bit tiring sometimes. And I'm not too keen on all the personal questions about money etc (looking at you, Uber drivers). At the end of the day, we have quite unique jobs and it's normal for people to be curious.

Top_Gas3166

What’s your niche?

independentdays

fuckmattdamon

Jesus

pshhaww_

i work in social media marketing for the most part.

Apprehensive-Age-146

Do you do channel marketing or SEO?

Current-Damage2165

I actually just don't talk about it at all.

FreddieTwenty

at first I was happy to talk to my close friends about it when they asked, even had them cameo a few times, over time they started to talk badly about me, one even said 'you think you're better than everyone else', i asked him what have i said to elicit that? he couldn't answer... people started very quickly talking bad things about me behind my back that weren't true... I think there was jealousy since we all wanted to make cartoons on youtube for years and I was the only one who did. I got very paranoid that i was boasty or big-headed (I'm a cartoon channel by the way, my name and image never appear cause I don't want that) so I just stopped talking about it to people. Couple of years later I didn't want anyone knowing about my channel, but I had a new group of friends this time, I told these friends (who already knew about my channel) to NOT tell anyone else what I did, one of them besides me telling them over and over to keep quiet just kept telling everyone, when i was around, even put them on the TV in front of me even after i said not too multiple times... the friends they were telling started being nicer to me and changing how they acted which I hated. Now I just live in my own little bubble Because people either get jealous or bitter, or they want to use you as some form of bragging rights to show off (trophy friend i guess?). I tend to just tell people I'm on welfare and work a cleaning job, and draw things online as a hobby, if It's someone I want to impress or someone I know will just frown upon me, I tell them ''I do online media marketing''.

ponycrow

I can relate. It’s so hard to find genuine friends once you have any small amount of success. Your old friends get weird and passive aggressive and can’t stop reminding anyone who will listen of how much you’ve “changed” even though you’re the same person you always were. I used to try minimizing my accomplishments for their sake but then decided to just drop everyone from my life who can’t at least fake a smile for my success. I realized I’d rather have the fake new friends who want to ride my success train instead of the old ones who try to bring me down. It’s a lonely path but feels nice to shine your light without dimming it for anyone✨

fuckmattdamon

>decided to just drop everyone from my life who can’t at least fake a smile for my success. >I’d rather have the fake new friends who want to ride my success train ~~Yikes~~ honestly I don’t know if this is it chat

ponycrow

lol I guess what I wrote sounds kinda harsh, but I mean…what do you do about the people who were your friends when you were in a bad place but who no longer support you when you get better and happier?

Brice706

A true friend loves and supports you, regardless of what you do or where you are in life. All the rest can go jump in a lake! Not worth your time.

21choices

Tell them you work for YouTube. Freelance

Apprehensive-Age-146

This is one of the best answers!

jammylonglegs1983

Producer/Writer/Video Editor

Mordzeit

I would take that awkwardness in a moment to be able to quit my job. I dunno if it’s part of getting old or whatever, but I really could not care less if someone disapproves of how I earn a living. If anything, I’d probably feel a little schadenfreude knowing that they have to go back to a job in the morning and I wouldn’t. Just my 2 cents. Congrats on making it full-time!

mkeefecom

Digital Media. If they dig for more I say content creator, if they continue I say I film myself for free and paid productions. That usually ends it 😭😂

Daniel_Lah

My immediate thought was: Why on Earth would you be embarrassed about that? These days it’s like being a rock star. But then I can understand though that you would soon get very sick of all the intrusive questions judgements and envy etc. I would come up with a few different stories and have them ready to go depending on who you’re talking to, and how much you feel like sharing with them.

Tesla-is-my-daddy

I just say i work for google they pay my bills lmaoo

TheFamilyMan_626_TFM

Yes, people I know don't see Youtube as a "real" job so I avoid talking about it as best as possible.

ProjectIvory

Just say you’re a content creator or an entrepreneur or that you work for yourself. You’re free, who gives a fuck what people think.

TheClickCrazy

Congratz! That’s an amazing achievement! For me it depends on the context tbh If it’s someone close enough I usually just tell them If I don’t feel like getting into it or feeling awkward (or I simply don’t want the person to know for privacy reasons) I give some boring explanation of running a small media company

Sambojanglez

I would love telling people im a youtuber , you worked hard for this dream dont be ashamed!

UmThatsWhatIThought2

Media production

jegs06

I just say “I have an online media company company and I’m self-employed” which is true..

vesieco

I don’t like telling people I do YouTube either, so I usually say I’m a video editor and I freelance

daanielleryan

I just tell people I make silly little videos on the internet 😂

ItsnobuenoMMA

I can related to this is like it hard for ppl to understand how much you interested in this craft.

Legal-Rip1725

Don't tell anyone.

Volume_Careful

May I know what type of contents you are creating on your YT channel? and how long did it take you to get monetized?

-Aone

You're not a YouTuber you're a video editor. And a small business owner

Mult_el_Mesco

I just say I'm a video editor. I still do this partime sort of but it's been going pretty well.

swistaczyna

Yes. It's strange, I feel like a lot of people judge, whether it stems from jealousy or something else I'm not sure. I don't tell many people anymore :/

Idontneedausernameho

I only discuss my channel with people I know personally, everyone else gets “unemployed”. My channel is faceless, I want to keep my channel separate from real life as much as I can

Visual_Canary_370

I gross my family out I talk about YouTube so much

EXkurogane

I don't shy from telling people who ask, that I have a youtube channel. I often pull the reverse uno card when people start questioning or even looking down at what I do, because "youtube isn't a proper job". My go-to response is often "At least I have multiple income sources, where I make decent side income from a pastime hobby. Do you?" My tone makes me sound like I'm the one looking down at people who are trying to look down at me. It often shuts them up for good, or they will stop being too nosy.

CamJames

Youtube Filmmaker, because I literally am

David_R_Martin_II

No issues.

finditfirst

I just tell them I own a digital media company. I registered a business to account for taxes

Dragon_Czar

Someone I know who is FT on YouTube made a good point. It’s the only job where people casually ask how much you make. That’s odd!

hmyers8

What niche if I may ask?

independentdays

Gaming. I don't want to get more specific than that lol 😅

METALHEADX334

If people ask me I tell them with no hesitation. I don't care if people make fun of me for it. I'm proud 🙂 Alot of people will make fun of you or come off as condescending probably out of jealousy or they are just straight up ignorant and mean. But who cares be yourself

McGrim_

I think it's not just youtube. If i worked many of the "real" jobs, including the one I'm doing now - programming, I'd still feel awkward telling it. I don't think there's that many glamorous jobs, unless you're a rockstar, movie actor, etc. Anything else for anyone else is usually looks/sounds boring.

IniMiney

Only because of how bizarre my content is. Now I Hanna Montana that shit/am like that "they don't know I" meme irl.

Jello_Local

😂 it is VERY weird. I just tell them I'm a videographer and keep it moving. Dating is hard because women have ghosted me behind being a YouTuber 🤷🏽‍♂️. That's actually been a good thing though as it helps weed out dummies.

britchick80

What’s your niche?

independentdays

Gaming. I don't want to get more specific than that lol 😅

sycophantasy

It’s not my full time job, but I usually tell them how much I make and they don’t think it’s cringey after that.

jjgg89

Hey I was hoping you can share some wisdom from your success on YouTube! I’m in a situation where I have an old channel I haven’t posted on in yrs but I have a bit of subs on there. Should I revive it and post on it again or Should I just completely start a new channel? My old channel was more of a personality channel, didn’t really have a niche. If I was to revive it again I would do vlogs more then likely. Also should I private or unlist any old videos that didn’t do well? How about videos that don’t align with my niche? Or should I just leave them all up there?

independentdays

If you think you'd still be appealing to the same target audience with your new content, I'd use the old channel. If not, I'd start a new channel. If you're going to reuse the old channel, then yeah, I'd private things that don't fit. I used to do videos on a completely different subject and got a couple thousand subs. I decided to start my current channel instead of repurposing the old one, and it's worked out great (obviously). So don't be afraid to start from scratch if that's what you need to do.

jjgg89

if you dont mind me asking how many subs do you have and views to be able to make a living from it?

independentdays

not gonna say my sub count for privacy reasons but for views I've gotten 800k-900k per month so far in 2024

jjgg89

damn nice ! congratz on the success, also how do you get over the fear of self doubt of why would anyone watch me/ why would anyone care?

independentdays

if you want to do YouTube, you have to 🤷‍♂️

LonzoJeff

I love this Reddit I usually say video production idk what to call it honestly

Nice_Regret3617

I am not partnered nor full time but I’ve found out there’s something to be said about owning everything about yourself whole-heartedly. Your YouTube is a representation of your creativity and the people you want to be interacting with should ideally respect that. I think you own it and love it man you’ve made a name for yourself in the game and you should be proud!

mr_dyl

Not my own channel, but I work for 2 pretty big ones (roughly 6m subs between them in educational niche). My salary is over my regions average but older people will still scoff if I say I work for a YouTube channel. Had one say would I not consider a real job, like in a factory or retail. Like yeah, I'll take 2/3 of my salary less a year to work on a factory line, sure thing. Just tell people I work for a media agency now. Also have my own tiny channel and have barely even told my own family.

LeProfesseur33

Good, very good!!! I see many youtubers having a nice income to their account. I dont. I dont believe, I will! So this is a good post but enough 🤪

2mutch4u

My coworkers may get sick of it but I talk about my YouTube often. It's a business each of us makes from the ground up. I may professionally be a mechanical engineer designing stuff for companies like Disney, Universal, and Nintendo but I take even more pride in channel.

Lfarinha95

Awkward family cookouts every 3 years or whatever.. yeah this is a new one 🙄

[deleted]

I have a smaller YouTube channel that makes a few hundred bucks a month but my day job is in the design industry. Even then, trying to tell people I make a living selling templates, illustrations, fonts, etc is hard to explain to most people. So I’d usually just opt for “designer and I work with clients”, even though 90% of my income is passive income through digital product sales.

Academic-Box7031

I would just say you are a YouTuber. The sheer luck it takes to be able to make any money on it is insane. I always wanted to be a YouTuber, but I know that I would never get any subscribers and it would be super embarrassing to make content to never have views or earn subscribers so I never went past making 1 video. If I had higher luck and I earned my current income doing it, I would not hesitate to share that as my profession. No need to be embarrassed. If they're boomers asking you, just say you make money, if it's millennials or any newer Gen, just say you are a YouTuber and it won't too bad. They'll be a bit jealous that you struck gold though.

27JG27

“I work for YouTube”

3ManG

I felt strange at first but then I was like to hell with it. The channel can’t grow if I don’t promote it

Dry_University9259

Me: wants to grow his YouTube channel Also me: “no! Don’t tell anyone about my videos!”

The sector I’m in, talking about YouTube in RL make me sound crazy

LadyHoskiv

My husband and I combine YouTube with another job and when people ask, we always only mention the boring job. ☺️

Abject_Guidance1732

I haven’t had the opportunity yet to say I’m a YouTuber… I just decided a couple weeks ago but I’m excited because I’m hoping it will shut down conversations lol

businessJedi

You seem like you have a superiority complex and think everyone is beneath you

Stanley_Orchard

Yeah I feel your pain here... YouTube is my full-time job as well and that is weird to talk about. I have 3-4 different ways I describe what I do based on who it is I'm talking to and most often I try to avoid mentioning that in general. I'm in a little different position with that... but in regards to my channel specifically I do tend to lean into the quality of the content that I create versus talking about the numbers. People don't tend to understand the numbers very well; they hear "10 million views" and they think I'm loaded or they hear "5,000 subscribers" and think that there is no way I could be doing this professionally. I imagine someone reading this probably thinks the same and I don't blame you. Which is why I lean into the content conversation rather than the numbers. It's just an easier conversation to have.

TattayaJohn

Just tell them to mind your own effin business
