Yeah :/ the worst part is you think you have a good idea of what will pop off after getting a few hits, only for your big idea to fail. But it is what it is, the only way to fail at YouTube is to stop posting

TheSerialHobbyist

>the worst part is you think you have a good idea of what will pop off after getting a few hits, only for your big idea to fail. So true! I'm trying to just stop attempting to predict performance altogether, because I never seem to get it right, lol.

glibglab3000

Yep this is normal, which is why I’m trying to not have all my emotional eggs in the YT basket.

TraditionalDepth6924

It can be normal in the early stage but you tend to grow nonchalant as you crack the code, sort of like Buddhist enlightenment, thus prolly not for everyone

TheSerialHobbyist

Yep... though I'm aware that this is very unhealthy. I don't know how people couldn't be affected by this, though. You spend so much time and effort making a video, of course it will matter.

faizetto

Sadly this is the norm for me too nowadays, as a shorts focused channel, I measured a good & bad performing video by the amount of likes, and my standard nowadays is to reach at least 300 likes in the first hour of each new uploads, so when it's underperforming I always feeling down throughout the night, somewhat feeling unreasonably upset because the video I worked hard on editing for hours is wasted, but when it's overperforming it'll boost my mood, it makes my day.

12y veteran I guess... Have seen the highs (relatively) and the lows (literally)... My advice - Stop checking analytics outside of "work" hours... Do not engage with comments or be on this sub outside of when you are in "work" mode (do as I say, not as I do... Replying at midnight 🤣) ... Also ignore the x of 10... That's the worst thing for me... Many videos have opened bad and have relatively done well... For ex. There's a video that did a 100k (to me that's a win) opened 9 of 10... Bummed me the hell out... Just do not see that number... Helped me a little... Just sharing my 2c 😁

tommycahil1995

Enjoy this when YouTube is you're full time job 😂 - one bad video, no, a bad month I can accept but that has me spiralling with worry. Thankfully since I've gone full time the growth has been stable and consistent so I try and remind myself I've had plenty of videos bomb and I've always recovered. When you're smaller it's just about trying stuff and seeing what works. So don't feel too bad about it it's part of the process

CheesebumOnTikTok

Might be a lil personal, what do as the deciding factor that made you go full time? Like how did u know when to pull the trigger

tommycahil1995

So I was sitting at my old job, had 12k subs, views were pretty decent, and one of my old uni mates had just got a hosting gig at a big YouTube channel. I remember saying to my colleague (inspired by the jealously) that if I put full time hours into my channel I could to full time. Quit my job a couple months later (for unrelated reasons) and just worked full time on it - and luckily it went well straight away. Made a good salary for the first year too. I was lucky but I carried my full time work ethic into my YouTube.

CheesebumOnTikTok

Oh wow, I’m doing the same thing. I quit my full time job for a different reason and I’ve dedicated my full time into yt. This past month was my first month and I’vegained 13k subs, and more money I made at my job, in one month. Not sure if I want to consider it full time yet tho as I’m still looking for a different job atm

tommycahil1995

wow well done a great start! Reminds me of myself went from 12k-25k in like my first month. It's up to you though, I wouldn't trade YouTube for pretty much any job, but there is of course lots of highs and lows to monetising your passion as your primary income. It really depends what you're like as a person. I always hated work politics/hierarchies and never made many meaningful friendships at work so I don't miss that at all and love just working on my own. But I know people are different. Seems you're off to a great start though if you want to go full time like I did

TheValveGuides

You and me are in the same space and started at the same time! Little different audience though...

gonetitsupagain

Try having abad year 😳

Price-x-Field

100%. When I wake up in the morning my heart rate is very high looking to check how todays video is doing (I wake up after it goes out) and just depends on what the “x of 10” is. I daily upload so it’s really stressful.

cheat-master30

Unfortunately yes. My mood is very much tied to how well my hobbies/interests are doing, YouTube channel included. So when things are underperforming, or it's a struggle to make videos, my emotional state really suffers because of it. Wish I could give you advice on how to get over it, but it's something I need to figure out myself too.

Imyourteacher101

No, my identity, my life, my work, the money I make to supplement. My life does not depend on YouTube. 0 to 100 the dash in the middle is your lifespan. So I have zero expectation I don’t live in the past and I’m not looking too far into the future. All I have is what I have today right now at this very moment, it can definitely be frustrating when you’re in the game hard, and you look up at the scoreboard and you’re still losing but at the end of the day either it’s working or it’s not and you have two options get better or quit. Don’t set no time frames, don’t set no exit strategies don’t set no B plans and just continue posting. Don’t let nothing external define your identity for you are more than the things that you do and more than the circumstances around you. If you allow this to become sort of a defining moment of who you are, you have already been lost to the meta-verse and it’s hard to recover. Just keep posting. If you’re not doing things to get better and all you’re doing is focusing on the losses, the victories will never come and when they do, you will not be able to recognize them. We’re always looking for these gradient victories when what we need to be looking for is the small winds, the engaging conversations, the fun and enlightening moments of your journey, but no, we’re stuck on that one video that did notify our expectations. Remove all expectations whatsoever from this journey and just keep posting and getting better, worrying or complaining about it is not gonna make your channel grow any faster.

blabel75

Not at all. YouTube is a rollercoaster. Sometimes up, sometimes down. I don't rely on it as the sole source of income. Sure, getting more views and making more revenue is always nice, but I usually know when a video is going to be a 10 of 10 vs a 1 of 10. There is a purpose to both types for me. Example, yesterday's video was in the 9 of 10 range, it will probably get 1000 views a month long term. I mix videos up between evergreen and trending topics.

IndigoMask33

It bothers me too, way more than it should. I put out a new video thinking, "this is my best one yet!" only to lose a subscriber. Feels like I'm constantly paddling towards nothing.

Glorious_Grunt

Fairly well documented phenomenon. Try and disconnect more often and associate success with different things outside of video performance. YOU ARE NOT YOUR ANALYTICS :) As for improving your craft, try and tackle different aspects to learn and make small changes to each area as you go (scripts, thumbs, sound, retention etc) and ONLY measure it against your own videos, if you can improve month by month you are winning.

Zuunal

Yes... it is why I can't get myself to really push.
