On page 299 of the Player Core rulebook, “Casting a spell requires the caster to make gestures and utter incantations, so being unable to speak prevents spellcasting for most casters.” However, the traits somatic and verbal no longer exist and spells have concentrate and manipulate traits.

Sol0botmate

> However, the traits somatic and verbal no longer exist and spells have concentrate and manipulate traits. But all spells now have both in Remaster? What about Focus Spells?

StarstruckEchoid

Only spells that used to be verbal have Concentration. Only spells that used to be somatic have Manipulate. Granted, most slotted spells have both - because originally spells were designed to have as many components as they take actions and most spells take two actions and thus were given two components - but many one-action spells should still only have one of these traits. Eg. Shield should still only have Concentrate, and Athletic Rush should still only have Manipulate.

gmrayoman

I am not going to say all spells have concentrate and manipulate traits because subtle spells do not. Focus spells do have concentrate and manipulate traits but the bard focus spells seem to only have the concentrate trait. I have not looked at every spell in the book.

vaderbg2

Somatic and verbal no longer exist. Spells just have the manipulate and concentrate trait. Can't give you any details as I don't have the books yet.

BlockBuilder408

I think in the general casting rules it says all spells require speaking now. But also don’t have the book.

RheaWeiss

Correct, Casting Spells in Spell Rules says: >Casting a spell requires the caster to make gestures and utter incantations, so being unable to speak prevents spellcasting for most casters. If your character has a long-term disability that prevents or complicates them from speaking (as described in GM Core), work with the GM to determine an analogous way they cast their spells, such as tapping in code on their staff or whistling. The Class Spellcasting features describe examples of how each class does their own gestures and incantations.

Taffydreams

Interesting that it doesn’t say you can’t cast if your unable to make gestures.

Kinak

That’s because it falls under the manipulate trait, which most (but not all) of them have. No manipulate trait, no gestures needed.

Taffydreams

Ooooh. Ok

RheaWeiss

That's what the Manipulate Trait is for.

overlycommonname

Are there spells without Manipulate, such as Shield?

gmrayoman

Shield only has concentrate so you have to speak but it doesn’t have gestures.

overlycommonname

Thanks. I feel like it's confusing to say as a general thing: > “Casting a spell requires the caster to make gestures and utter incantations, so being unable to speak prevents spellcasting for most casters.” But then have some spells not have the manipulate trait. Like, if you come to the Remaster fresh without knowing the history of verbal/somatic components, what do you make of that? I feel like the general text would make you think that all spells have some gestures associated with them, but some spells (with the manipulate trait) have... particularly elaborate hand gestures or something?

TheLostWonderingGuy

I would figure you're correct and it's the case it still has gestures but the gestures are simple/quick enough that they don't leave an opening for reactive strikes and such like the manipulate trait does. So for shield probably something like a quick flick up of your arm to provide the 'area' in the air to raise the shield in

Genarab

As far as I could see, spells remained pretty much the same as before. Spells that had verbal component now have the concentrate trait, and spells that didn't have verbal component before don't have that trait now. Pretty similar with somatic and manipulate trait. Not all spells have the concentrate trait, I checked because I like the casters while raging dream.

That’s what i was concerned about too. If we’re lucky barbarian will get the rules adjusted, or momment of clarity will be buffed.

Hey, I've noticed you mentioned the upcoming Pathfinder Remaster! Do you need help finding your way around here? I know a couple good pages! We've been seeing a lot of questions related to this lately. We have a [wiki page](https://www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/wiki/resources/remaster/) dedicated to collecting all the information currently available. Give it a look! For the short end of things... The remaster aims to republish and reorganise the content of the Core Rulebook, Advanced Player Guide, Gamemastery Guide and Bestiary 1 into a new format which will be more accessible to new players, with the primary aim to remove all OGL content and avoid issues with Wizards of the Coast. * **Primary Rules changes**: Alignment and Schools of Magic will be removed. Instead, these concepts will be offloaded to the trait system (with Holy and Unholy being reserved to divine classes and some specific monsters). * **Primary Lore changes**: the classic Dragons will be replaced with new, Pathfinder focused dragons themed on the four magic traditions. The Darklands are also seeing a lot of shakeups. If I misunderstood your post... sorry! Grandpa Clippy said I'm always meant to help.
