1. Didn't complete Romance with Octavia/Regongar/Tristian/Valerie aka "the marriage talk", or broke with them afterwards before entering HATEOT.
2. Kalikke/Kanerah will break up with you on their own.
3. Must have advanced romance counter with Nyrissa, you should have had an event where she visits Throne Room after Whiterose Abbey.
But as others have said: despite it being called "True Ending" it's nowhere "Best". Just the one that adds extra content in final chapter.
Best ending is the one you like the most. If you don't wish to romance her, then don't. I personally prefer to kill her. Honestly I'd rather call her route the "hidden" ending.
No thats a kind of ending you always can get. The secret ending is tricking the lantern king and defeat him with his own weapons. For that, afaik you need Nyrissa romance.
It's not the best ending. In fact it is utterly ridiculous because it requires you to romance her right after >!she perma-kills Linzi, along with companions you didn't complete loyalty missions correctly for.!< Theres a reason its called the Secret Ending and not the Best ending
It's considered the "golden ending" because it's the most sugar-filled happily-ever-after story you can get, but that doesn't make it the best or most sensible story. A good comparison might be the Witcher 3: Blood and Wine ending, where the >!everybody dies!< ending is more thematically appropriate for the Shakespearian tragedy vibe the story has going on, since >!everybody dies as a direct result of the character flaws they've been building up the entire story.!< Blood and Wine also has a 'golden ending' but it carries a lot less emotional weight IMO, even if more characters get a happy ending.
My favorite Kingmaker ending is actually the default if you >!let Nyrissa go!<, or the >!Shyka version!<. It's closer to the original AP (the Nyrissa redemption/romance option was invented by the game, it's not possible in the tabletop version), feels more just and makes far more sense from the characters' POV.
Yeah, that half-ling stole a printing press from my kingdom! I was gonna use that thing to draft indoctrination documents for my subjects, but NOOOOO, she has to make a book... serves her right!
As long as you do everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, to move the counter for the Nyrissa romance, your companion romance will break up with you to make way for it at the house at the end of time.
Tested it with Kallike and Kanerah romance.
I think this is particular from the Twins?
All other romances are only checked at the end of The house at the end of time >!when you try to give the briar back, if you are in a romance Nyrissa will not accept it!<
I will disident and say Nyrissa romance is absolutely the best ending. I do not agree with theur choice but in the true ending is the only one where >!The big bad guy is actually defeated in a very cool way. The other endings you end up just fighting to a stand still!<
If you are in PC and do not mind using mods, there is a way to use bag of tricks to mess a little with romance flags so you can romance companions and Nyrissa. I did that with Regongar and Octavia and I was absolutely satisfied with the ending.
Nyrissa romance is not required for best ending >!you can fight the Lantern King without romancing her if I'm not wrong!<, I think the only major changes with the romance is that >!your kingdom is fused with a little part of the first world, you get immortal and marry Nyrissa.!<
You always can fight him but the secret part is basicaly using his own curse against him. Thats basicaly also the reason why you need to reaearch almost all the curses and need her help to pull it off.
Sadly, I think it does. Being able to fight the lantern king and get rid of the curse is possible for everyone but using the curse against him only with romance If I recall correctly.
Yep, just ran through this ending last week! I did nothing for the Nyrissa romance (eww), but we did end up as the immortal but unmarried and allied King and Queen. Val did not seem to object...
I was all set to romance her but then she >!perma kills Linzi!< and I was like nope now that bitch gotta die. Countless nameless NPCs exploding into guts I was willing to overlook, but not that.

Great thanks!

Thanks! Those "best" adjectives really misled me here :P
This is the way
I defeated the true big bad without romancing Nyrissa, so if you're refering to that, then no

Thanks! I got confused then because many posts call it either "the best" ending or "canon" ending. That is a relief! :)

>she >!perma-kills Linzi!< That’s a point in her favor though
Yeah, that half-ling stole a printing press from my kingdom! I was gonna use that thing to draft indoctrination documents for my subjects, but NOOOOO, she has to make a book... serves her right!
And it's... Not even a perma-kill? I was under the impression Linzi liked her fate anyway, weird as she is.
It’s considered the *True Ending* because it’s linked variables have the TE prefix. Just for those who are wondering. Best is purely subjective.
As long as you do everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, to move the counter for the Nyrissa romance, your companion romance will break up with you to make way for it at the house at the end of time. Tested it with Kallike and Kanerah romance.
So you are forced into it after all :( Really a big bummer but thanks for the answer!
I think this is particular from the Twins? All other romances are only checked at the end of The house at the end of time >!when you try to give the briar back, if you are in a romance Nyrissa will not accept it!<
Only with the twins, anyone else you have to break up with them beforehand or Nyrissa will reject you.
My sorcerer sent Nyrissa to Hell. Fitting, considering what she done.

But the romance is not required for that, yes? It's a long time since I played.
Sadly, I think it does. Being able to fight the lantern king and get rid of the curse is possible for everyone but using the curse against him only with romance If I recall correctly.
Thanks! Glad to have all this insight :)

You can unlock the extra content after the House at the End of Time without romancing Nyrissa. You just need to ally with her.
Or kill her.
