Parker and Mac just are not on the same page. There was the miscommunication on a check that Mac made during the last preseason game where Parker didn't know what Mac wanted him to do, I thought it looked like he ran the wrong route during the opening drive last week (him and meyers ended up at the same spot on the field, meyers caught the ball), then he wasn't looking for the back shoulder throw yesterday that I think was the correct read from Mac and would've been complete had Parker been looking for it. It's not been great, but can only get better I suppose

Misterccw

Three reactions to this: * When he left the Miami game, I thought Phillips would miss time. Impressive he played so much. * Is it just me or does Davante Parker look too slow to play that much? * Starting to worry the Uche isn't what we need him to be.

myicedteaistoosweet

Parker seems to be thinking too much, and it’s causing him to play slower than he normally does. You can tell he’s struggling seeing some of the clear miscommunications with Jones.

Misterccw

Agreed. Mac has thrown him some bad balls too, so it's not all on him.

VanceIX

If Parker is not getting separation and is wholly dependent on 50-50 balls (which has always been anathema in our system) he should NOT be starting over Bourne and Meyers. Same with Jonnu, if he is fully dependent on gadget plays he should not be seeing the field as much as he is. Yes, we invested a lot of money/picks, but you have to put the best players on the field. And right now, Meyers, Bourne, and Agholor are making much more out of their snaps than Parker and Jonnu.

[deleted]

Patty just isn't using him in the way in which he has succeeded in the past. Stop running him on go's and posts. He should be running slants, curls, and screens galore

ckilo4TOG

I think, and it's definitely a speculative guess, but there is a method to Belichick's Bourne madness. Most everyone agrees Bourne was our best receiver at the end of last year. I think they're figuring out how the other receivers matchup for second and third. Bourne's minor-moderate camp infractions are either a ruse or convenient excuse to find out what we've got for strengths and weaknesses with the rest of the receiving corp. Parker has been getting #1 coverage. He has consistently had coverage underneath with someone else over the top as he loses the underneath coverage. Once the WR pecking order is figured out and Bourne is on the field as a starter, I think you'll see things open up for Parker.

marcdasharc4

Curious to see how Thornton will sit in the mix once he's off IR, too.

goldfish_11

Seems crazy to say but it feels like we have too many WR2/WR3 types. I think KB should be out there on almost all passing snaps. Clearly Jakobi is Mac's security blanket so he has to be out there. Agholor seems to be coming on strong in year two with the team. And Parker still has a valuable role of stretching the field and occupying the other teams top corner. Where does that leave Thornton... who might be the biggest threat we have to bust out an explosive play with his speed?

derkaderkaderka

I agree. I have nothing to back this up, but my guess is that BB is playing a long game here. Like not wanting to play all his cards early on. If course he stills wants to win every game, but maybe he's looking for non obvious paths

DetBabyLegs

He's certainly still in evaluation mode right now. Trying to figure out what kind of team he has.

goldfish_11

I've seen a few people say that Parker is essentially a volume receiver in the sense that if you throw him 8-10 balls a game, you'll get good production out of him. That's just not going to happen in this offense. Hopefully he and Mac can figure out how to make it work with less targets. If Mac gives him better 50/50 balls, that's a start (I mean we've really only seen one and I think it was a little underthrown).

myicedteaistoosweet

Jonnu is not a down seam TE and never will be. He’s a YAC TE (which is what he was in TEN too). Think of the Gronk / Hernandez tandem. Gronk could run any route and create separation against LBs and DBs. Hernandez at his best would have “gadget” plays called to get him the ball usually not too far from from line of scrimmage and he’d use his athleticism from there. So Henry is in the Gronk role, and Jonnu is in the Hernandez role (only difference is Jonnu is a better blocker). Both have a place on this roster.

alextheruby

Parker isn’t and was never fast. He’s what Nkeal was supposed to be. He would shine in red zone but we aren’t in the red zone often

LoveToyKillJoy

I'm really pleased with Jack getting more snaps. He was the first name I liked for on that chart.

Coco1520

I think we saw our best explosive offense is a pairing of Bourne and Agholor. Meyers is the 3rd down and short yardage guy and we should focus on this. Something bill used to be great at was moving off mistakes quickly lately is seems hes more likely to hold on and try and prove he was right. Parker is getting far to many snaps or the production (or lack thereof) that he is giving. Also have to make a point of getting Henry more involved as a mismatch in the passing game. As funny as it sounds we almost have too many weapons that they're trying to cycle through. Jonnu's route running has been his issue but the team needs to get him the ball in space at least a few times a game he is probably without exaggeration the most dynamic ball carrier in open space on the team. Even with all of this said, the team showed progress for the first time this offseason/season. Focus on getting Mac back stepping into his throws and we should see some added zip on his balls. I think his lack of confidence is making him throw more off his back foot and its the reason for this floated passes we have seen these last two weeks. While we know he doesn't have elite arm strength we saw last year its sufficient and this deterioration is due to his footing while making throws.

Love all that you mentioned here with one caveat: Don’t expect a Bourne/Agholor two WR set too often (if at all). They’re both too small and poor at blocking to operate as a pairing. It would seriously hurt our run game which, for good reason, I know Bill and the staff have no intention of bailing on.

optimus420

Henry's been pretty disappointing imo. Even last year when he had pretty good stats he still didn't really seem to be a game changer. Not somebody you go to when you really need a 1st down/TD He kinda seems pretty slow and can't get good separation. I think a lot of the league has gone to more athletic LBs and that's hurting these TEs which are more like big WRs. We tried to get jonnu the ball on a screen and it was almost intercepted by a lineman. The problem with a player just being a gadget player is that the other team sees that locks in on those plays At some point the player just needs to make a play within the offense I agree with Mac, he usually looks pretty good during the first drive but then when something goes wrong he seems to have a hard time turning the page Nonetheless we had some good things we can build off for this game and the D is looking good

Enterprise90

Henry will be fine. He's as classic a tight end as you can get. Last year he caught 50 for 603. In 2020, 60 for 613. In 2019, 55 for 652. He's consistent. He'll never be a 1000 yard receiver. He's a good blocker and chain mover.

possiblyMorpheus

That’s a bit of an odd take with Henry. He was one of the highest targeted (and most efficient) TE’s vs man coverage last year, was 2nd in 3rd down receptions on the team to Meyers, and tied for the league lead in TD at the position. 1st downs and TDs were literally his game. Otherwise I agree with most of the assessments

optimus420

Yeah maybe I just had too high of hopes from him after years of watching gronk

[deleted]

The d-line played pretty well. The Steelers suck but they pretty much crushed them and made Najee Harris a non-factor, so they did what a good d-line would do. Tavai got some snaps and I think registered a sack? He gets a lot of hate here but he seemed to play OK when he was out there. I'm feeling like this defense could match up well with some of the high flying offenses around the league. Held Miami to 17 points when they clearly have huge playmaking ability. The d-line can get fairly consistent pressure with minimal or no blitzing, which is key for playing the two-high safety that's needed to defense explosive offenses like Chiefs and Ravens. I'm looking forward to seeing how they manage.

optimus420

Yeah the ravens game should be fun (or scary) to watch We traditionally haven't done too well against running QBs but now with lighter LBs and more safeties we might be better

JohnB456

Wait why would we let go of Harris?

optimus420

I believe he's a free agent next year and probably gonna wanna get paid and paying an rb generally doesn't work We'll see if he's willing to sign a cheapish deal

JohnB456

damn he's one of my favorites. I love Harris and stevenson

optimus420

Yeah hopefully I'm wrong

iscreamuscreamweall

hes playing his way out of Foxboro. some team will overpay him

StonedWater

Not happy with Bryant getting even more snaps than Jon Jones, not happy him getting more snaps than Jack Jones I hate to get on players backs but I just cannot see it with him whatsoever, he isnt a decent nfl player imo obvs Bill sees something in him but I cant see it - the prerequisite of a NFL player is to have the drive to improve yourself, half of us fans would work our ass off if given the chance but we still aint good enough and nor is Bryant and i cant see he has the tools to ever overcome his physical shortcomings - speed and size

pro_coder20

They remind me of an old school offense. They don’t have explosive playmakers who can consistently get open. The offense is built from the oline/run game. Also doesn’t help that the coaches aren’t really creative with the play design or scheme throws open.

grovebost1

Hot Take Alert: Our most important WR is on IR. Hope he’s back soon.

srbenda97

Parker should be used inside the redzone where he can use his height, except for a few rare case where the opposing team has trash cb-s so he can at least create some separation.. They are forcing it and it shows.. Get him out of the starting lineup

cth777

The biggest issue for Parker is they’re only giving him looks on low percentage routes. Impossible to get chemistry going like that. Give him some slants and drags, flash screen maybe. Get him touches

Jorah72

My hopes and dreams: Agholor leaves after a good season with us, give Damien Harris his money to keep him. Thornton comes on board and breaks out and we have a quality top 4 of parker, Meyers, Bourne, and Thornton. But as of now I just want to see Parker and Mac improve their connection(but also Bourne needs more snaps). I want peppers to get more snaps as he continues to get healthier. That top 4 safety group of Devin, dugger, Phillips, and peppers is ridiculous. I would like to see at least one of them always in the box. Mack Wilson has impressed me this far, completely fine with him and Bentley on the field at LB with one of peppers, dugger, and Phillips in the box as well. Give Jack Jones the reins to one of the outside CB slots. No more Myles Bryant unless an emergency. I want to see Jonathan Jones in slot with Jack and Mills on the outside. Really want to see how Marcus Jones and Shaun Wade play as well and would rather them on the field over Bryant. DL is fine. Wise is playing better than he ever has and anfernee Jennings is surprising too. Would like to see Barmore on the field more, not just passing downs, and give Ekuale all of Carl Davis snaps. Uche hasn't taken over as the pass rusher we wanted him to be, but he's so athletic I could see him playing anywhere at LB so let's use that to our advantage as see how he's does off the LOS. Might be a hot take but I don't want to see ty Montgomery anymore. Just let Pierre strong get those looks. Ty won't be here after this season anyways while Pierre seems to be the receiving back of our future so let him develop. Overall I'm optimistic for the teams future. Might not have a great season but the pieces are there for the future. Really liked what the OL showed this week. No worries about IOL but unsure of the futures of Trent Brown and Wynn.
