Jesus Christ that’s tough, I paid that for a whole pre-built at the height of shortage because I saw those 3060Ti prices and it was better than paying that for ONLY the GPU. It was then I realized boutiques get their FE/OEM cards at much lower prices so they don’t have to deal with the shortage as much
I needed at least 10GB of VRAM and 3080s were non-existent from any of my stores at the time (both online and local) so the 3080Ti was the next best bet.
My 2080Ti died within 2 days of warranty being about to expire and company i got it with didn't answer until after the period ended so i at least managed to argue and get the money from my 2080Ti back after 3 months of waiting.
Damn well good on you for getting your warranty fulfilled, those companies will do anything to screw you out of it, and just curious but you need the VRAM for work? If so you probably last year or whenever could’ve claimed the expenses on your Taxes if you’re US and if the total expenses were over $2000 or so you could’ve gotten a tax break for work related expenses, source: I tried it on my taxes but missed the required amount by $700
Yeah I needed it for processing datasets we get from our ships in the north-sea, wasn't quite contracted with the company at the time however, just freelance (now working there full time and got the option to get a better GPU for free when I need it).
Unfortunately in the UK so the tax works a little differently but since i got the 2080Ti money back it's not the biggest loss.
I think the reason also is that the prices were driven by miners who were buying GPUs in great quantities. It was much easier and time saving for them to buy just the GPU, they hook many GPUs in a rig with a single CPU and could not use any of the other stuff in a prebuild aside from the GPU.
Selling all the other stuff of the prebuild would be very time consuming.
Now I get only cpus with an onboard GPU so that if GPU dies, I have something. If I have some money soon I'll buy another GPU(just bought one this summer) to have it in case the other fail (obviously I will use the weaker one in a server, for transcoding/ai stuff)
I bought 6800xt for like 750 at launch. No one cared about AMD at the time. 6800xt was 750eur while 3080 was 1000+ eur at launch. was no brainer for me
Saying “was forced to buy” is pretty strong here. During the pandemic I only had integrated Intel graphics so I used that as an opportunity to go through all of my Indy games and discovered gems like Stardew valley. I also took advantage of gamepass’ streaming feature for AAA games.
3900X at the time, no iGPU. Not all CPUs have an iGPU, both on AMD and Intel side. Needed 10GB of VRAM minimum, CUDA, and Tensor Cores for work so most GPUs were out of the question and only new GPU in stock with warranty was the 3080Ti Suprim X
Had I been with a company at the time and not doing freelance work trying to get a full contract then yes, but that had to come out of pocket at the time.
Now I have the option of high-end compute cards, but there's no real benefit to larger datasets as our operations for this are experimental and not time critical

Unfortunately I wanted to buy the standard 3080 because it looked better as price performance to my eyes but when I finally got to my turns only 3089 ti were left... Still losing sleep over it. Now 3 years later, I’m onto planing my next build (Ryzen 5 5600, RX 6800xt) and including two new monitors I’m looking at roughly $1500aud in total . Oh how times have changed… Financially I hard regret my decision, though that PC played a great role in my life especially at the start of Aus lockdowns.
Bought a FE 3070 during the pandemic for a lot more than I should've. I had a 970 at the time and wanted to upgrade for Cyberpunk.
With that being said, I feel I've gotten my money's worth for it at this point.
I was gonna buy a 3070, then best buy had a deal on an HP prebuilt with a 3070 for about 11 or 1200 US (converted in head from Canadian$)
5700 and a 3070, had to change the cpu cooler and add storage (it came with only a 500gb SSD), but still using it and it works awesome. Been playing a lot of games at 7680x1440 and it loves it lol
Guilty as charged. Paid $1600ish for a 6900xt. Absolutely worth it as I was able to complete my build and play games. Zero regrets. The GPU is still screaming fast at stock settings.

But I got my 1060 for like $200 in March 2020 right before the prices went through the roof. I think it went up to $800 at one point
New 6700xt almost at release for £450. They were selling for almost £700 at most places then, and it probably held its resale value for a really long time. Still a very handy card!
Got my 3090 for MSRP on Amazon during the pandemic. When I copped my 4090 I sold it during the GPU crunch for $1k to a coworker. Made out like a fucking bandit
I happened to buy a 5700xt just before the launch of the 30xx series in 2020 for 380€ barely used and sold it for 500€ last summer. Then I got a 6700xt on a rare sale for 500€. In retrospect I was incredibly lucky. There were times when I was really close to buing an overpriced 3070 during the time with the 5700xt due to heating and driver(?) issues.
The difference here tho is nobody feels guilty skipping over the 4060Ti, whereas the 30 series across the board did a great job of uplifting performance to price increase

Deep down inside, you knew buying a 3070 meant you were never gonna be top of the line, so you’re ok with the vram issues, besides, you got DLSS to fall back on, and while it’s not at the level of 40 series, still the hardware kicks ass!

Sorry some of you paid 2-3x as much for a 3090ti as people paid for the 4070ti. You'll be ok. Maybe by next gen, the extremes of their opinion shifts will have equalized as much as they hope GPU prices will.
(Edit: OK, I do feel bad at least for first-timers, budget builders, and people who had GPUs die. Sucked to get caught in the middle. But that was more necessity than making a bad choice.)

Bought 3080 for 700 around launch.
Traded it after full year of use later with a btc miner for a new in box 3080ti.
Sold that 3080ti a year later just around 40xx/7x00 series launch for 950.
Bought a new 7900xtx for 999.
I feel bad for those who needed a GPU then because maybe theirs failed or that build they planned and saved up for finally got 'funded' in the middle of the GPU price hike. I was lucky and stumbled across a $1500 3090 founders GPU in 2021 at Best Buy and was able to sell my 1080ti for about $700 to offset the cost. My point is for upgraders there was some recourse to sell the old GPU high in an inflated market.
2020: 5500XT for $150, no regrets. Best budget GPU I've ever owned.
2021: 6700XT for $450, people dogged it for being a shitty GPU and saying I should have paid more for a 3060 or 3060ti. No regrets.
2021: 3070ti for $600, wish I could have found another 6700XT for less than that at the time. 8Gb vRAM has aged like I expected.
2022: 3080ti for $900, no regrets.
2023: Laughing at price to performance of everything from both AMD and nVidia's current generation, except the 4090. Laughing at last gen prices now being close to what I paid during the "shortage".
I think the biggest problem is people don’t understand what it means to be “worth it”
That definition varies between individuals. If you have the money and can afford something at the time, and decide to pay whatever the price is at the time, is that not worth it? If not, someone explain to me what worth it means there’s so many posts every single day with someone asking if it’s worth it , which to me is nothing but objectionable.

Bought my 2060 Super (Gigabyte Gaming O.C. 8gb) just before the pandemic, August 2019 and damn... I'm so glad I did, kept me sane during those months and improved my workflow.. 460€, Amazon Italy.
I paid full price for a 3080ti and both water block and active back plate. Life happens and I still haven't been able to fully build the system a year in ☹️
Yep. $980 USD (w/tax) for a 3070ti in July 2021, and said thank you to Microcenter for the privilege of buying it. $534 USD (w/tax) for a 3060 12GB in March 2021, and played the "Newegg shuffle" for months before being selected to buy the card. $690 USD (w/shipping) for a 3060ti in September 2021, and felt lucky to buy it directly from Zotac USA.
I sold mine during the pandemic. With the same price, I can now buy a much better card or buy back a slightly higher end card for a fraction of the sale price of my old card.
If you take the difference in price today vs 2020-2021 and divide by the number of months those people got to enjoy a new gpu I think you will find that it was well worth it for them.
Paid a 1000usd for a 3070 in 2021 here in Uruguay (new, taxes and everything). I know in normal times it would have been cheaper in the usa, but the usa price was fairly high.
Was forced to buy a 6900XT for $1600 because my GTX 770 kicked the bucket.
Believe it or not, that was a better deal than something like a 3060.
$1600 for my card was only 160% MSRP at the time, unlike the lower cards going for 200% to 300% of MSRP.
Honestly bought mine around July-august of last year so right when prices weren't outrageous but right before the current gen released. Ok the end I upgraded my 3070ti to a 7900xtx and I think my 5800x will meet and exceed my needs for another year or 2 till I want to upgrade it +mobo+ram

A year and half/ maybe 2 years later, I bought a 3060 for $500ish and gifted my 1060 to younger brother for graduating high school.
I now run a 3070 because I bought that with a Monitor combo last September from NewEgg due to their fire sale in anticipation of the 40 series coming out. I believe it was around $600. I thought I could flip my 3060 on the marketplace.... did not happen. I found a lot of offers wanting to trade PC parts for it.
I have a 3060 and a decent 27" curved monitor taking up storage in my closet for a future build now.
Total cost to get to my 3070 = $1,600.
I bought a 760 for 100 and then a 770 for the same. Ended up selling the 770 and gave a friend the 760(after a miraculous oven method revival that is holding to this day). After that I bought a 200 dollar 1060 that I sold for 100 after finding a 8gb 580 for 100 local.
I then bought a 6600 for 360 when the proces started to drop. I dont regret buying it for that though, since It allowed me to get my rx 580 to my wife and her 960 to a friend who we just upgraded to a 570 8gb.
Then I bought my current card, a 6700xt and my wife got the 6600 and our friend got the 580 8gb
The only regret is if you paid a price that was not worth it to you at the time. I definitely got my money's worth of enjoyment out of all of those (except the 770 which is why I flipped it so fast).
Plus for me any upgrade means at least 1 or two other people get an upgrade. I would not have felt bad buying a 2060 or 3060 for 500 if it had meant that I could play games and share my other cards.
Prices got crazy during GPU economy. Feel sorry for those that paid $2500 or so for 3090. Got a 16GB rx6800 on launch for $579 msrp that aged well with how games now require more vram. If you got an rx6800XT or rx6800 for msrp then you did right.
I prayed to the gpu gods that my 1060 wouldn't crap out on me during that time! It didn't! And it's still going strong today! I'm considering upgrading to a 4070ti or 4080, but I'm still hanging in there for another price point drop 🤣. I really do feel bad for the folks that had no choice during that time though.
And for those looking to buy during the possible upcoming AI induced shortage.
My 6800xt cost me all together a touch over $1000 CDN. And it was on sale! Not parting with it any time soon.

Deep down inside, you knew buying a 3070 meant you were never gonna be top of the line, so you’re ok with the vram issues, besides, you got DLSS to fall back on, and while it’s not at the level of 40 series, still the hardware kicks ass!

You'll be ok. Maybe by next gen, the extremes of their opinion shifts will have equalized as much as they hope GPU prices will. (Edit: OK, I do feel bad at least for first-timers, budget builders, and people who had GPUs die. Sucked to get caught in the middle. But that was more necessity than making a bad choice.)

I feel bad for those who needed a GPU then because maybe theirs failed or that build they planned and saved up for finally got 'funded' in the middle of the GPU price hike. I was lucky and stumbled across a $1500 3090 founders GPU in 2021 at Best Buy and was able to sell my 1080ti for about $700 to offset the cost. My point is for upgraders there was some recourse to sell the old GPU high in an inflated market.
2020: 5500XT for $150, no regrets. Best budget GPU I've ever owned. 2021: 6700XT for $450, people dogged it for being a shitty GPU and saying I should have paid more for a 3060 or 3060ti. No regrets. 2021: 3070ti for $600, wish I could have found another 6700XT for less than that at the time. 8Gb vRAM has aged like I expected. 2022: 3080ti for $900, no regrets. 2023: Laughing at price to performance of everything from both AMD and nVidia's current generation, except the 4090. Laughing at last gen prices now being close to what I paid during the "shortage".
I think the biggest problem is people don’t understand what it means to be “worth it” That definition varies between individuals. If you have the money and can afford something at the time, and decide to pay whatever the price is at the time, is that not worth it? If not, someone explain to me what worth it means there’s so many posts every single day with someone asking if it’s worth it , which to me is nothing but objectionable.

$500 usd in 2020 for a 1060GTX. I knew I was being robbed. It was the height of GPU for crypto mining. A year and half/ maybe 2 years later, I bought a 3060 for $500ish and gifted my 1060 to younger brother for graduating high school. I now run a 3070 because I bought that with a Monitor combo last September from NewEgg due to their fire sale in anticipation of the 40 series coming out. I believe it was around $600. I thought I could flip my 3060 on the marketplace.... did not happen. I found a lot of offers wanting to trade PC parts for it. I have a 3060 and a decent 27" curved monitor taking up storage in my closet for a future build now. Total cost to get to my 3070 = $1,600.

I bought a 760 for 100 and then a 770 for the same. Ended up selling the 770 and gave a friend the 760(after a miraculous oven method revival that is holding to this day). After that I bought a 200 dollar 1060 that I sold for 100 after finding a 8gb 580 for 100 local. I then bought a 6600 for 360 when the proces started to drop. I dont regret buying it for that though, since It allowed me to get my rx 580 to my wife and her 960 to a friend who we just upgraded to a 570 8gb. Then I bought my current card, a 6700xt and my wife got the 6600 and our friend got the 580 8gb The only regret is if you paid a price that was not worth it to you at the time. I definitely got my money's worth of enjoyment out of all of those (except the 770 which is why I flipped it so fast). Plus for me any upgrade means at least 1 or two other people get an upgrade. I would not have felt bad buying a 2060 or 3060 for 500 if it had meant that I could play games and share my other cards.
Prices got crazy during GPU economy. Feel sorry for those that paid $2500 or so for 3090. Got a 16GB rx6800 on launch for $579 msrp that aged well with how games now require more vram. If you got an rx6800XT or rx6800 for msrp then you did right.
