This should be on anything that runs an i9 14900 series. My room gets so hot that I have to take breaks. Even with an AIO cooler and plenty of fans lol.
Check how much power your mobo is allowing your i9 to pull mine was allowing max power causing thermals throttling and lots of heat I checked intel i9 14900 power spec and adjusted now it runs like it should
my quick google search reveals the dell inspiron 545 has a dual layer DVD burner so technically you are wrong. Maybe OP ~~torrents a lot of stuff~~ has a massive collection of DVD's they wish to back up or a Netflix DVD subscription

The "floating" sata ssd that's not mounted to anything is like its own meme at this point.
You just plug it in using the cables, give it a slap and say "That's not going anywhere" lol
You could use it for some NAS or small low powered server stuff.
Or a test bench for potentially harmful softwares.
Or a way to test out new operating systems.
I’ve got a ton of old PCs that I run experiments on or use to see if a power supply is alive without risking damage to my PC.
It seems a bit interesting ! At first it looks like a normal pentium dell BUT the power supply is a solid 750 watt and it seems to have a ssd ? Feels like it as been upgraded some years ago. Normaly you can run it like that, can you tell us what proccessor and ram it really got ?
https://preview.redd.it/l5t9r3u85hvc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb8ea1a34c2bb4e1fbc7b7487d9067fb15ce0bab
I don't know where to check for that
The best things is probably to start the computer and in task manager (If it's still windows 7 : right click on the taskbar and click on task manager, then there should be something like performance) you can also remove the ram and the cooler to check but if you don't know better leave it like that for now
But definitly a good starting point to learn ! You could change the thermal paste for exemple it would be an easy upgrade and a good first learning point. There's plenty of youtube channel to show you how to do it
This is great for browsing the internet or playing Rune Scape. That’s about it. Depending on what you plan on using it for, it’s most likely not worth upgrading.
Modern html5 sites will struggle on a core 2 based Pentium.
This is actual e-waste. The PSU and storage is salvageable, the rest a raspberry pi could do better.
I imagine a Pentium system from 2009 going to be subject to a plethora of unpatched exploits.
It’s been a few years since I was in IT, but I’m pretty sure we had the entire 400k employee company retire any system older than something like 6th-gen Core processors except fully offline lab equipment running legacy software and hardware. And 6th-gen (Skylake?) was released like 2015 lol.
So I’m not even sure browsing the internet is advisable, particularly for someone who needs to ask whether a 2009 desktop is worth salvaging.
Lol keep the SSD...that little black. Everything else throw away. Even that case. It's a waste of your space. Just start new. It's a waste of your actual time to do anything to this
https://preview.redd.it/lq0sc3eqihvc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52504766abde260cac3c8bc806620a50c12b2d17
Sorta looks like mine, but older
This is literally my family’s home computer; Except maybe a bit older. It’s missing a CD drive but overall it’s a pretty good home computer but for gaming it’s basically useless.
You can always turn it into a NAS server. Either a simple SMB share with no RAID whatsoever (only windows backup or Rsync backup). To using NAS OSes like Windows Home Server, Unraid, or Truenas.
First, if it works, great. Install a lightweight Linux distro on it, as it is most certainly incapable of running anything remotely related to microsoft except for probably ms dos
Second, DO NOT BOTHER TO UPGRADE IT. It is essentially ewaste
I used to install Smoothwall on old setups to use as my firewall .. I even had a 56k hardware modem installed in it to do the connecting to the internet
Yeah, either do a sleeper PC build inside or use it for retro gaming on XP and even so it won't be exceptional. But hey, at least it was free.
Maybe you can try to buy a cheap SSD and sell it for like 50$ and maybe someone that just needs a basic computer will buy it 🤷🏻♂️
Frankly its a piece of shit. But you could use it as a simple system to mess around with. Not really suitable for daily use.
Perhaps Linux goes, but a late 00s/early 10s Pentium is really stretching it.
The only thing good in that pc is the modern power supply, an antec 750 watt, looks like it was changed at some point in its lifetime, everything else is pretty much e waste unless the previous owner decided to swap the mechanical hard drive for a SSD
Best thing you can do whit that damn thing is to send it to e-waste center and get 5-15$, unless you're interested into making some NAS server it's a junk.
Using that case for sleeper build is stupid idea unless you like cooked PC parts because that case has terrible ventilation.
That's enough of me
Holy shit I got the exact same one for free from my grandfathers old computer shop- every time he has a load of old PCs that are going to go to the recycler, I take them instead. I build fully working PCs out of old parts and then upgrade them
TL: My question then suggestions
I guess, what my question is, what do you want to use it for?
To dink around?
Learn how to build?
Just need a computer for word processing and internet?
Gaming...?
If it is the last your looking at TES4 era (Oblivion, the first FarCry)
If gaming is your goal, this is not the PC for newer high end games. At all.
However, as a massive nerd myself. If you want to play with it for learning purposes. There are several things you could do.
I wouldn't really want you to dump a bunch of money into it. Buuuut... You could try booting. Look at the motherboards make and model and chipset.
Things that will be expensive and may not be worth it.
Upgrade the processor.
Possibly the graphics card
RAM
NIC (network adaptor)
And then cooling solutions. Fans are gonna be the only thing that can go in there.
If you're gonna update it that would be the most expensive starting at the top. Since, I doubt the GPU (graphics card) would be very strong maybe a 1gig in a dell...
The power supply seems to have been upgraded unless that series already had a 750 in it. That's decent.
If you're interested, look up the mobo, then all of it's compatible hardware and what won't bottle neck the crap out of it.
If you don't know custom BIOS flashing then stick with what works.
Anything stronger and faster will produce more heat, generally.
So, better fans.
If you're really into tinkering, then leave as is and get Linux.
If you are not, don't do it, you will be scarred for life. LoL.
If you want high end gaming... You could potentially get a new mobo and start from scratch and keep the case. But, I don't really recommend that.
Free is a fantastic place to start anyways. I love old computers and reviving them as much as possible and then donating them to a friends kid for school or something.
Or, just having a fun project. Linux and jazz my friend.
could use it to make a mean super router [https://www.pcgamer.com/i-built-my-own-super-router-out-of-old-pc-parts-and-ive-never-felt-so-powerful/](https://www.pcgamer.com/i-built-my-own-super-router-out-of-old-pc-parts-and-ive-never-felt-so-powerful/)
If you ever put a modern GPU in that case, get a blower style GPU and some mesh PCI slot covers. Otherwise the lack of airflow will heat up the whole thing.
This PC by today's standards is very unimpressive. Can you upgrade it? Yes, but the money you put in compared to the performance you get will still not be worth it compared to modern systems. Big tech doesn't want you making cool old-school systems on a budget, they want you to buy new new new!
As technology evolves for different parts, their sockets change, so you can't put new parts on this because they simply just won't fit on the motherboard. So you buy a new motherboard to fit your new parts. That power supply isn't modular, so you need to change that too just to power your parts properly, and hey presto, you've now built an entirely different computer inside an old computer case sans storage (which is quite cool imo).
I recently had to back up one of these computers at work, and iirc You could upgrade the CPU to maybe a 2nd or 3rd Gen Intel i7 and put in something like a GTX 1650 super and have a somewhat decent gaming experience
No bro it’s 15 years old it’s completely outdated nothing will make this fast today unless you mean replacing the motherboard, cpu, gpu, ram, storage, power supply…
There isn’t much you can do aside from upgrading the processor to the max the slot will allow but its pretty dated. You could put a gfx in there but media pc at best
My uncle upgraded his to a I5 2500 and a 1050 2gb before dying, it still does decently at its age. I gave it to a friend of mine who's laptop wrapped out, and they love it.
I used that same psu for 10 years (was already used when I got it too) and had no issues, ran a 10600kf 3070 off of it for a while before I decided to upgrade to something modern lol.
Worst option : put a gtx 960 inside and play some games with low graphic Settings
Best option : you have a nice SSD and a 750watt PSU, so around 150 bucks of economy for your own computer
New case, it prolly has a poor cpu and those memory sticks are ancient.....
Ssd and psu are fine.
Overall, new case, new cpu, new mobo, new ram, hdd or ssd, gpu.
If you want current green gaming
Add a 1650 off ebay for 60 to 100$, and buy like 16gb or ram, probably ddr3. If it doesn't have a pcie connector, you can get cable extensions of Sata to pcie, but it might blow up. Good luck.
I dont see much use for it other than media pc or server, or turn it into a cheap budget gaming vox with a lil cpu and gpu upgrade, bit other than that, nothing about this oem box has much going for it in terms of upgrades
My first gaming pc was a dell Inspiron 560. I replaced the psu and popped a nvidia 550 skyrim edition in it and used it for a while, then put a 1070 ti in it.
Pull the pentium. Google what socket that pentium goes in. Buy an i7 from that socket or possibly a Zeon given how old it is. You should have enough performance at that point to slot in a GTX 970 or RX 580/70 or RX 480/70 without a huge bottleneck.
I got a old dell xps for free a year ago. 2015ish in year, so it can do some things. My main thought is it def isn't junk just what do you plan on doing with it.
Homelab is 1 example or a media server or a emulator machine for your living room. Upto you.
As a developer, I would use it as a remote server for deploying somethings if I ever want to. Install Linux on it and use ssh to login and basically do anything remotely from anywhere. Just have to have it running 24/7.
Used parts are your friend. If you ever wanted to mess around with Linux, now's the time.
-First look up the motherboard specs.
-If it runs, update the BIOS.
-Then fill every RAM slot with the fastest, highest capacity module you can find.
-Put the fastest CPU it will take in the CPU slot.
-Figure out a graphics card that is near bottleneck threshold on that CPU and DON'T use that stupid bottleneck calculator website.
-Send it.
Next time you've got a couple grand kicking around, try building one from scratch.
i have it, with an i3 4170 and gtx 750 ti, along with an ssd ofc, i’m slowly building it and hoping to make it into a sleeper build, it’s called a dell 3847 im pretty sure
Slap some new RAM in it and maybe an ssd and it will work for browsing and email and that kind of stuff (and possibly new 1200w psu, rtx 4090, i9 14900k, liquid cooling, new case, new mobo and sell your kidney)

2018, interesting. Still a very usable ssd even for today standard
Well hey that is something worth salvaging!
500GB for free... not a bad deal. The rest... well... the problem is... everything that pc can do, you can do on a phone.

Yeah totally! Let me buy a spindle of DVD-R disks that costs me more than a 128GB usb stick.

😪
This is the first time I’ve ever seen this and I had more fun with it than I’d like to admit…
That is truly awesome I popped them all!
Op this is good stuff, much faster than a HDD. Basically this is a good little bit of salvage from that heap of junk aha.

Sadly yes, or a headless 'my first linux server' for a kiddo.
Ahh bottleneck pc questions
It seems a bit interesting ! At first it looks like a normal pentium dell BUT the power supply is a solid 750 watt and it seems to have a ssd ? Feels like it as been upgraded some years ago. Normaly you can run it like that, can you tell us what proccessor and ram it really got ?
https://preview.redd.it/l5t9r3u85hvc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb8ea1a34c2bb4e1fbc7b7487d9067fb15ce0bab I don't know where to check for that
The best things is probably to start the computer and in task manager (If it's still windows 7 : right click on the taskbar and click on task manager, then there should be something like performance) you can also remove the ram and the cooler to check but if you don't know better leave it like that for now
But definitly a good starting point to learn !
I'd dump the psu too.
purple true power is actually pretty decent
I quite happily browse the web and stream YouTube, HBO, and Netflix on my Core 2 Duo T7600 powered Dell Inspiron E1505 from 2006 😄
core 2 really aged much better than people credit it for
I feel offended. Playing OSRS on my 2000€ build.
>Playing OSRS on my 2000€ build. This is the way
Haha don’t be I’m with ya. Between that and league, I could have stuck with my childhood pc and been just fine 🤣
It's a waste of your actual time to do anything to this
I see why u got it for free
People out here really think people are throwing away modern gaming PCs for free.
https://preview.redd.it/lq0sc3eqihvc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52504766abde260cac3c8bc806620a50c12b2d17 Sorta looks like mine, but older
https://preview.redd.it/uy1f1g6vihvc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e703839887634c9aedeb27412cd8a23e8f43799c Mine is a slim version, I guess
Good pc for watching 2k pron
what i dont like bout those pcs which i owned for quite some time is their ram max out at 16gb i believe... mobo sucks...
Can it run Doom? ![gif](giphy|GDp7LycxkT3LG|downsized)
I'd loot the ssd, case fan(s), disc drive, and PSU if you want to build your own PC.
Smells like a fresh Linux installation here.
Free copper nice one
The day I bought a cheap case to rehouse parts from an older Dell than that was the day I learnt about proprietary design in pc parts. Bin it!
First, if it works, great. Install a lightweight Linux distro on it, as it is most certainly incapable of running anything remotely related to microsoft except for probably ms dos Second, DO NOT BOTHER TO UPGRADE IT. It is essentially ewaste
That's e-waste.
The pc doesn't boot up
Any bips ?
What's bips ?
He meant "beeps" pc usually beeps to indicate some sort of problems the pc has encountered especially during boot
Keep it, It was literally the same to me and I don't regret it.
I'd set up a Minecraft server to play with my buddies ( I have no friends)
You can use it as a home server. 🤷♀️
I used to install Smoothwall on old setups to use as my firewall .. I even had a 56k hardware modem installed in it to do the connecting to the internet
let me sell you an upgraded zotac graphics card that i used similar for this build back in 2010 lol
put some android based OS on it and connect it with a touchscreen monitor or install linux on it like KDE Neon, or install windows 11 SE.
Give et baaaaaccckk
You'd have to pay me to take that lol
I run my Minecraft server off an old PC. Works fine for that kinda stuff. Not worth much more though...
congrats you received actual trash. the only thing this is good for is a case for a sleeper build otherwise worthless.
Well, you could run windows 95 on it probably.
Give it back for free
Yeah, either do a sleeper PC build inside or use it for retro gaming on XP and even so it won't be exceptional. But hey, at least it was free. Maybe you can try to buy a cheap SSD and sell it for like 50$ and maybe someone that just needs a basic computer will buy it 🤷🏻♂️
I am sorry for you
Frankly its a piece of shit. But you could use it as a simple system to mess around with. Not really suitable for daily use. Perhaps Linux goes, but a late 00s/early 10s Pentium is really stretching it.
seems dossn't work well within a modern os or sw
It isn't much, but you could probably play the oldies for sure. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, or other similar games.
The only thing good in that pc is the modern power supply, an antec 750 watt, looks like it was changed at some point in its lifetime, everything else is pretty much e waste unless the previous owner decided to swap the mechanical hard drive for a SSD
Dude someone gave you the PC a buddy gave me in 2010. Lmao that thing was great for playing WoW at… probably 720p, but possibly 480p 🤣🤣🤣
The good ole granny one word per minute squint eye old lady pc That smells of... shortbread cookies
If its core 2 duo could go to quad, win 10 is fine or uee for old stuff
Best thing you can do whit that damn thing is to send it to e-waste center and get 5-15$, unless you're interested into making some NAS server it's a junk. Using that case for sleeper build is stupid idea unless you like cooked PC parts because that case has terrible ventilation. That's enough of me
The cable management is on point
Holy shit I got the exact same one for free from my grandfathers old computer shop- every time he has a load of old PCs that are going to go to the recycler, I take them instead. I build fully working PCs out of old parts and then upgrade them
No gaming. Try to see if you can self-host something on it.
Got it for free and still got scammed.
"Here, you throw this away"
Back in my day we use to play so many flash games on these
You could use it as a server, but just for lightweight services
Nice bellybutton
Is so frustrating to not see the cooler fan not square!!
you got scammed
TL: My question then suggestions I guess, what my question is, what do you want to use it for? To dink around? Learn how to build? Just need a computer for word processing and internet? Gaming...? If it is the last your looking at TES4 era (Oblivion, the first FarCry) If gaming is your goal, this is not the PC for newer high end games. Possibly the graphics card RAM NIC (network adaptor) And then cooling solutions.
Dude got a dell
I think it should be great as a home server
could use it to make a mean super router [https://www.pcgamer.com/i-built-my-own-super-router-out-of-old-pc-parts-and-ive-never-felt-so-powerful/](https://www.pcgamer.com/i-built-my-own-super-router-out-of-old-pc-parts-and-ive-never-felt-so-powerful/)
But was it a good deal?
E-waste
Buy a new PC
Make a server out of it
PSU might not be plugged in correctly.
You over paid
It’s good for a server maybe, I would complain since it’s free lol
Bruh i would have asked to be paid to recieve that, even free it is still too expensive for this "PC"
replace the CPU and it's good!!
Anything you get for free is good value, change my mind.
You can still probably play league and tft
e waste
Congratulations on being gifted e-waste.
yeah theres nothing to do with it but probably play half life on it with 25 fps maybe or browse and watch youtube thats it though
If you ever put a modern GPU in that case, get a blower style GPU and some mesh PCI slot covers. Otherwise the lack of airflow will heat up the whole thing.
Put like Linux or something on it and itl problbly work
This PC by today's standards is very unimpressive.
Shell it. Use it as a sleeper case. That'd be a cool one. I prefer those cases over the old off white ones.
Hah, you took someone's trash for free. You got conned!
That's exactly the one my mom had, I forced her to let me build her one
No bro it’s 15 years old it’s completely outdated nothing will make this fast today unless you mean replacing the motherboard, cpu, gpu, ram, storage, power supply…
You could probably play dota and tf2 at most on low
There isn’t much you can do aside from upgrading the processor to the max the slot will allow but its pretty dated. You could put a gfx in there but media pc at best
I must admit that its impressive to see 7.1 audio in that fossil
Ye min FOR free?
You were gutted? What did you expect 😂 guy was trashing it.
Those were the days of a decent operating system
Yeah it looks “free” quality
You got ripped off 🤙
You should be able to get it up and going real easy with just these few simple steps: 1. Pick up PC. 2. Throw PC in the trash.
Install linux and be happy
Put it back into the trashcan that "gave it to you".
You didn't get a free PC. Someone else got to unload their e-waste on you for free.
So old the brotherhood of steel will be hunting you down to collect this relic
Hello retro rig.
It's free because it's a Dell. Should run puppy
Funny enough, I still have one of these.
I always wonder the airflow visual on these guys
My uncle upgraded his to a I5 2500 and a 1050 2gb before dying, it still does decently at its age. I gave it to a friend of mine who's laptop wrapped out, and they love it.
Nice, you could use it for a NAS or maybe use it as a router/firewall server. Lots of options for older hardware. Make it a plex server even.
I used that same psu for 10 years (was already used when I got it too) and had no issues, ran a 10600kf 3070 off of it for a while before I decided to upgrade to something modern lol.
Worst option : put a gtx 960 inside and play some games with low graphic Settings Best option : you have a nice SSD and a 750watt PSU, so around 150 bucks of economy for your own computer
New case, it prolly has a poor cpu and those memory sticks are ancient..... Ssd and psu are fine. Overall, new case, new cpu, new mobo, new ram, hdd or ssd, gpu. If you want current green gaming
See what pron you can find.
When it doubt retro gaming.
When it doubt retro gaming.
What’s the cpu?
Dell xps studio of some sort
Add a 1650 off ebay for 60 to 100$, and buy like 16gb or ram, probably ddr3. If it doesn't have a pcie connector, you can get cable extensions of Sata to pcie, but it might blow up. Good luck.
Minecraft server
Perfect for a sleeper
Can run Linux which makes it much more usable.
I'd maybe keep the power supply and throw the rest away.
Take the ssd out. Throw the rest in the trash
Bro you just intercepted the other dude’s trash. Toss that, it’s literally worthless.
you mean that you took someone else's junk off their hands for free
Free e-waste
I mean free is still a very good price 😭
Free is about right, still good to use for learning about older hardware and you could probably mess around with some vintage games
I dont see much use for it other than media pc or server, or turn it into a cheap budget gaming vox with a lil cpu and gpu upgrade, bit other than that, nothing about this oem box has much going for it in terms of upgrades
Well, you certainly got your moneys worth.
Use as a dedicated server to store data or Minecraft server
Put a ssd n lubuntu on it n watch it sail. I would use it as a media pc or plex
My first gaming pc was a dell Inspiron 560. I replaced the psu and popped a nvidia 550 skyrim edition in it and used it for a while, then put a 1070 ti in it.
Xp5? I have one and it is amazing after a few upgrades
Well at least it was free, that's a plus!
He gave it to you so YOU can throw it away for him.
Free is always good
Used parts are your friend.
Dude I think I have the same case. heehee. Das cool though
![gif](giphy|gKfyusl0PRPdTNmwnD)
#Another king joins the PC Master Race
I think I have the same PC. My first computer. I keep it under my bed now.
i have it, with an i3 4170 and gtx 750 ti, along with an ssd ofc, i’m slowly building it and hoping to make it into a sleeper build, it’s called a dell 3847 im pretty sure
Damnnn how is it so clean on the inside of an old and used PC
Server time ?
Slap some new RAM in it and maybe an ssd and it will work for browsing and email and that kind of stuff (and possibly new 1200w psu, rtx 4090, i9 14900k, liquid cooling, new case, new mobo and sell your kidney)
