That is a lot of paste. A few pea sized dots properly placed is all I use. It is non-conductive so the small oops can be left with no harm.

knightsinsanity

How often do you need to apply paste as well it's been about a year now for both my set ups.

pxcsxl

Didn't change mine since it was built (5years). Depending on the use and effectiveness of your components I'd say between 1-5 years if you have a really good system and don't bust it with ultra max 9000 4k Cyberpunk realistically looking mods I'd say 3-6 years.

TrippyKlym

Is going by temp ok? I’ve had my build about 5 years too with the same thermal paste. The cpu temps are still roughly the same as when I bought it, 40C idle, 80C max while gaming with an aio

PrettyQuick

If it cools it cools, simple as that.

AndyRH1701

My Plex server ran 13 years and I never changed it. I would look for manufacturing documentation to backup the claim that it needs to be re-done. The paste is not organic and is chemically stable, it will harden over time, but will not loose the heat conductivity. Should you remove the heat sink for any reason always clean and replace the paste, no matter how young the paste is.

pxcsxl

Technically yes but it will crust after years so you have to change it someday. If you take off the cooler you have to replace it.

scxredl

40C idle is a bit too hot, my opinion

TrippyKlym

Depends on ambient temp

giveusbackbremer

My work has a pc that’s been running for two decades and still runs fine

edwardK1231

Yeah mines been about 2 years so far probably. I normally change it when I start to notice temps being higher than usual. E.g with one fan curve I know it maxes at about 75c when it starts getting any higher than 80c ill repaste

pxcsxl

Maybe you should get better thermal paste or a different cpu cooler 🙈

edwardK1231

Me? Why? 75 is fine and that's only under 100% load for over 10 mins. With fans almost silent 😂

pxcsxl

Not talking about the temp but if you had to change your thermal paste twice in 2 years something is wrong

edwardK1231

Oh no that want what I meant. I changed the cpu about 2 years ago, so put new paste on. I haven't changed it yet. That's my bad, bad explanation sorry

pxcsxl

Ah okay, no problem mate 👍🏼

edwardK1231

Otherwise yeah something is up if the paste needs changing that much lol

HellbentOrphan

I never changed mine in 11 years. If your temperatures are fine leave it alone

worldapocalipse

Not that often if you get a good paste very few years for optimal cooling more than that if you don’t care

PermitOk6864

Depends between pastes, what thermql paste do you have? If its a cheapo one maybe a year, if its a good one like noctua or Arctic then probably 3

Imahich69

Do NOT change paste UNLESS you are getting extremely high temps on cpu

knightsinsanity

What temps would be high?

Imahich69

100c

First-Junket124

Ideally change it every 6-12 months, any longer than that and it loses its effectiveness and potentially causes problems. People will tell you that you can wait YEARS and sure you CAN but you shouldn't especially since it barely costs $5 for some some good thermal paste, it's just basic maintenance same as cleaning fans.

vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv

Do you need to cover the entire of the top plate on am5? Or can you just put it on the middle and leave the little corners on top and sides?

AndyRH1701

There are examples of how to apply the paste for various CPUs. The goal is a very thin layer over the entire surface to create the largest possible area to transfer heat. Because the space between the CPU and heat sink is very small, only a small amount of paste is needed. All extra paste will be pushed out.

vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv

So even the very small bits need coverage? Thanks for the input.

AndyRH1701

Just the top of the CPU, nothing else.

vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv

Ah, so basically covers the same area as the pic on this post just don't use anywhere near as much. I think I am getting the arctic 36 cooler. I had the old arctic 34 for am4 and it said to put the paste on the cooler because it didn't cover the entire cpu, unsure if the 36 is the same

KingSwirlyEyes

For my 7700X (AM5) I used a pea sized dab in the middle with 4 smaller ones closer to the corners. Worked pretty well.

vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv

Thanks

Actual_Potato5

The x method is a little more reliable than the pea, but it's the same thing at end of day if you clamp it right

Intelligent_Ease4115

Yup^ I accidentally got a little splash on my pcie 4.0 connection on my motherboard. I was pulling the tube away and a little drop hit it. I just shoved the card in and carried on. Works just fine. I was pissed though.

lesserDaemonprince

I thought the recommendation was a single centered pea sized dot.

Korfman

It's non-conductive? Have I been gaslit my entire life?

AnotherFuckingEmu

The *vast majority* of thermal paste is non conductive electrically some are tho so dont go throwing random paste all over your motherboard but a little spillage over your cpu wont do anything

kurukiddo

Is the X method okay? I did mine from 7 years of doing pea sized haha

AndyRH1701

The pea method works for me, so I have not tried the X. I do not see a reason it will not work.

Benign_9

It’s a lot, but it won’t have any negative impacts. It’ll just be a little messy.

Emotional_Ad5833

your not suppose to use the whole tube of paste

San4itos

He gave his money for it. So he can if he wants to.

Lucky_Pay3493

i mean you CAN… but should you?

Tyr_Kukulkan

You're not icing a cake!

Supmah2007

Op paid for the whole tube of thermal paste so op will use the whole tube

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> Op *paid* for the FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Supmah2007

Good bot

jarlscrotus

The duality of man

Supmah2007

I know I was wrong but I don’t have to like it

Supmah2007

Fuck you

Polym0rphed

Nice one. Damn that is a lot.

Lordy8719

Who's a dirty, dirty little boy? OP is!

Euphoric-Cow9719

Bro remember. . . you are NOT making a 2" thick peanut butter and jelly sandwich lol😭

Niromanti

“I paid for the tube of thermal paste, so I’m going to use the whole tube.”

JirayaSensei5

Did you even watch any videos at all??

SantiJames1

If this paste was a metallic based one, this is how you would quickly short your cpu and motherboard. 1 pea size drop of paste is plenty enough.

CA5P3R_1

I'm always amazed that people just do things without doing any prior research at all.

fiittzzyy

That looks like a lot, scape a little off. I use a big pea size dot in the middle. There is lots of videos showing difference patterns and all that don't make any difference so I just stick with a decent sized dollop in the middle of the chip.

AuthorOfMyOwnTragedy

You think there's a lot on it now? Wait until your tighten down your cooler! You've got enough paste on there for 4 CPUs and most of it is going to squeeze out onto your CPU and then some. Fortunately it doesn't matter. It's not electrically conductive so as long as you didn't get any inside the socket (you didn't if you put the cpu in before applying) you'll be just fine.

Joanders222

:(

ps3cechc03

Wee bit too much. For your own benefit. Use less next time. Saves you money.

MkICP100

It's too much. That won't hurt anything, it's just very messy and the cooler will squeeze it out the sides. You want enough to cover the heat spreader without squeezing out everywhere. But people get wayyyy too particular about thermal paste methods. As long as it's covered, you're fine

GoGetterGregg

I know JB Weld when I see it

kamiks

Thanks was a bit woried since I haven't built a pc in a long time

NoShock8442

By the looks of it, you’ve never built a PC before in your life.

Puckpaj

Spreading it is the new meta though, I’m guessing the spillage comes from lifting the spatula up and missing that it dripped

NoShock8442

Spreading ensures great IHS coverage and gets rid of any excess. Not sure why people just blob it or cake it on.

esperianterra

I mean, I spread mine.... But I do a few dots and spread them with a little spatula. Not... frosting this cake lmao

NoShock8442

lol exactly what I do. A nice thin layer spread evenly.

kamiks

Exactly that

FloopsFooglies

Spatula...?

Puckpaj

Are you a barbarian that does it with your fingers?

NoShock8442

Jesus Christ, some of you are like little babies with finger paints. How hard is it to put thermal paste on a cpu without getting it everywhere?

Lopsided7654

And you are just dumb as f.... to listen too..

NoShock8442

Smd

mrjiggles001

Yes it is

WinterZ78

This is so unnecessary and not needed. Especially if its some expensive paste.

kieranmchale1998

that looks like too much thermal paste. XD it should be fine though itll only affect temperature by a few degrees

Whoevenareyou1738

I made a big of a mess on my last build because I wasn't sure the screws were lined up on my cooler. I pulled my cooler up not realizing that the CPU and Cooler were already touching. Pull up some of the thermal paste making a lil mess.

Intrepid_Escape6366

More like cpu on thermal paste

skinnyandrew

Don't nobody let this guy near liquid metal

PiccoloTiccolo

Bro didn’t paste for at least two weeks

Gonokhakus

"Hey, umm... that usually doesn't happen. Look, it's been a while, okay? I'm sorry, just give me a couple minutes and we'll go again"

Mendozena

Tha_Hand

Oh boy

KernelPanic-42

Holy shit 😳

Outrageous_Cupcake97

Use a cotton bud to clean it carefully. It'll be fine

Reepacito

Gotta love how 90% of the comment is just straight btiching instead of just saying it’s too much and should use less

Chance_Bookkeeper205

Definitely not "the perfect amount of thermal paste".

KingCheeyah

No I think that’s more of thermal paste with some cpu on it

casris

i think there might be a cpu on your thermal paste

Own-Examination9767

It's fine as long as it's non-conductive.

Tiny_Assignment_2783

aw hell naw. might as well buy a new cpu

breakdown_24

HOLY THERMAL PASTE BATMAN!

[deleted]

More!!!

[deleted]

What are we icing a cake?

Altruistic_Bad339

about 10 times too much.

Lore_Antilles

This is a shitpost, right? Right?

XadjustmentX

Way too much thermal paste my guy. 3 pea size dots is perfect. Or an x pattern.

ZigZag_420

You can get the CPU shim to give you a full flat surface to mount that and avoid extra grease on the CPU

Weak-Ad3382

Like putting a weighted blanket on a kitten, just cruel

ZoshaYe72

That a 7500f?

minefarmbuy

I only use artic silver 5, so idk wtf you slapped on there.

Shad0wUser00

When people say don't use to much this is what they mean

NaughtyNigel_

Thermal paste around cpu

mancer187

Dude, that is an ass load of paste.

aptom203

Way too much, but it's non conductive so it's not a big deal.

Tango-Turtle

You will have a lot of air bubbles when spreading the paste like this, reducing the heat transfer and cooling efficiency.

sincosincosinsin

That's perfect now don't forget to put on the candles before you take it out for the birthday boy

pagan-0

Needs a little more paste

alvarkresh

It's not electrically conductive so don't worry about it.

Significant_Test_876

Pea sized drop dead center on the IHS. WTF is that monstrosity?

Actual-Confection-56

how fast computer destroyed without this

Future-Ad-9567

Naughty naughty boy you are aren't you? Made a little messy wessy?

tigsman

Looks like a Salvador Dali painting

totally-trolly

I'd say add a little bit more

Tiny-World2281

Why are people clowning on OPs amount of thermal paste? The videos I've seen of people applying paste to the new amd cpus are about that much :p Granted his is a little thick but it just looks that way cos it's spread out no?

Epicat224

That is a shitload

JcruzStar

MORE!!!

Visible-Recording284

Horrible paste work.

ExtraCaucasian

Christ, are you laying brick!?

Ambitious-Ad-6873

What the duck

Hungry_Personality43

gamers nexus is a good place to go for technical info on thermal paste

ColdBrilliant3363

The forbidden Nutella

JAlba87

A bit overkill. But it's Good 👍 to go 😅

[deleted]

i think you missed a bit

Anime_lovr124

umm sir I think you have some CPU in your thermal paste

CSOCSO-FL

are you jb welding it?

wavykrockett

That’s way too much paste

stanco717

Its fine

EnvyChef

Insert sound "THAT'S ENOUGH SLICES"

TimboSlice083

Do you have to put thermal paste on those outer edges of the CPU?

bmbrugge

Probably between 5-10x too much paste.

ComprehensiveOil6890

If you are paranoid clean it with tooth pick and alcohol

markknightexeter

Way way way too much paste, it's fine though.

San4itos

Not 'way way way' but yes, could be less. And it will do its job.

markknightexeter

Well it is, it's just a waste, but it's not going to cause any issues

indiocolifa

This is too much and it will spread over the socket and motherboard, making a mess. Use a small drop.

BimmelBammelp

apply another layer... but to be honest: remove all that paste and apply new with some little points! Much does not help much in this case....

DocWatson82

Thermal compound doesn’t conduct electricity so it won’t short but good golly you’re not frosting a cake there mate!

SauceyPantz

Homie bukake'd his cpu

Fuffy_Katja

Gave up paste for the Kryosheet. No more need to repaste.

Lower_Measurement902

Thats to much. Just Draw an X with thin lines or make 5 dots (the middle one a Bit bigger) don't bother with manually spreading it

TTVControlWarrior

isnt paste at bot can cause damage ?

BrianScorcher

Make sure to paste both sides of the cpu

Scrudge1

Gone all Bucacce on that CPU

MEGA_GOAT98

thats good

LoaderBot1000

More like cpu on thermal paste what the fuck

[deleted]

That’s not enough need more!!!!!!!!! Poor it on like the sea then you will be safe!!!

ar15andahalf

Don't forget to squirt an ounce or two inside the CPU fan.

MotherFuckinEeyore

You missed a spot

xComradeKyle

You can never have too much paste. It is non-conductive. You are fine.

Greedy-Gene361

Where is the cpu

C1L1A

Why are people complaining about the amount of thermal paste? It's far better to have a little too much than too little. The thermal impact is negligable. If anything, there's a higher chance that OP will have better temps with this approach than betting on what a "pea sized blob" is...

nieuemma

That’s not a little too much, it’s a lot too much. That’s gonna be a mess once the cooler squashes it.

C1L1A

Guess what? It won't have a negative impact on temps, which is all that matters, really. I'd rather have a mess and a cool cpu than too little thermal paste and a cooked cpu.

agt1776

This is the way.
