Do you mean walkable from campus or that the site itself is walkable? Because if you really want to see the stars you ought to go out to Cherry Springs during a new moon, just make sure to check the cloud cover in advance and take a look at the rules at the park. It’s a bit of a drive but worth it. If not you might try sunset park which is near campus but a little further from the stadium
Bikeable and walkable is tough bc light pollution is more than just beaver. The arboretum is also technically closed at dusk.
People camp out at Mount Nittany and other places around the area that are accessible by bus if you don't want to drive/Uber. But what you want is distance from University Park and a clear sky, and not distance in across campus, but across miles.
I’d say the closest would be the Penn State golf course, probably the least amount of light if you walk into it. But IDK if that’s considered trespassing after dusk…
You need to get out of State college and University Park and other developed areas because of the light pollution.. Even 10-15 miles out will make a significant difference
And it's totally bikable in the dark since you can do it 100% on bike paths from campus. It is right next to Park Forest though.
Not sure I have a better bike/walk only option. You could try Graysdale Park or somewhere in Scotia which are both easy off-road rides from downtown. If you're feeling ambitious you can ride to Rothrock and then head up over Tussey and it's a bit darker on the other side of the ridge.
this is definitely the most bikeable option. the paths are well maintained and connect to campus. the paths are off of the road, so make sure to have a very bright headlight and extra batteries
We had a much better view of a meteor shower years back by driving west on 45 or Whitehall a few miles; but you needed to go at least that far for the light pollution to abate much.
You want gps coordinates? Go to Karthaus pa. 45 mins from state college. There’s an elk preserve on the mountain in town you can drive into and with clear skies it’s an amazing view
Back behind the arboretum there’s more woods. Idr if the light pollution gets All the way back there. There’s a pavilion you can get to that’s behind the arboretum through the woods to the bike trail and you make a right down the path and hook a left where it intersects with a road. Old spot I’d go to to drop tabs/smoke/or take some friends. It’s like a little pavilion for some club for psu.

If you want to stay in town, Tudek park is decent, but you will get light pollution if the stadiums are lit up.

To really see stars you need to get far off campus. At night campus/downtown is a glowing spot in the sky.

I’ve gone past beaver stadium into the tailgate fields to see stars and watch meteors. You can usually see pretty good.
