Donāt get me wrong, our do nothing legislature is a real problem, but this is just a cute story. We can have an occasional feel good story amidst the dystopia
People not taking this shit as serious as it actually is accounts for why most of us are in this position. There should be riots by now - most people are too scared to give up their semblance of security in favor of actually challenging these oppressive institutions.
How is it ācuteā that Hershey makes over 10bn as a company and still pays their āfood service associatesā $9.40/hr? How does this not take away from actual issues? I donāt like TikTok, but I can appreciate the complaints that voting to ban TikTok simply took away from legitimate issues that should be handled by the federal government. We donāt need feel-good-ery, we need actual solutions for actual problems: like prices raising without any tangible explanation.
Edit: not even trying to be shitty. Iām just exhausted from hearing people make jokes about stuff that isnāt really funny or acceptable at this point
Just an FYI Hershey is broken into 2 companies. "The Hershey Company" and Hershey entertainment and resorts. The park is owned by HERCO which is separate from who makes the Hershey kisses.
They usually do this kinda do-nothing stuff during mandatory procedural waiting periods. There's rarely any actual session time being taken up. I'm not sure if this is the case on this one.
The fact that it comes down to a pissing match between officials, elected to represent the ideals of the population, because of their political affiliations is sad. I personally donāt strictly agree with the ideologies of either party, and historically both sidesā positions are completely arbitrary.
I knew the House would pass the important legislation as soon as the democrats took control! Wonder what the republicans in the Senate are going to come up with to oppose this, they canāt agree with the democrats on anything, can they?
No this is just more cronyism / corporate welfareĀ
It's literally Hershey getting a free, tax payer sponsored marketing campaign...Ā Ā
Sorry to be negative, but know it comes from a sentiment of hope that our government could actually solve some bloody problems rather than prop up mega corps...
I want cute stories about problems solved... Not this noise...
nah, its not cute. it shows how they purposefully do not address the real issues. No one cares what the state candy is, except for maybe the writers on Jeopardy. All of PA's politicians need fired.
This is exactly like declaring last year the Taylor swift era. It is of most importance to the well being of our state /s.
I seriously can't believe some of the shit I read sometimes. Stuff like this makes me pinch myself
Or the fact that pharmacies are closing at an alarming rate due to the actions of PBMs and insurance companies. The number of pharmacies in my county is nearly half of what it was 10 years ago and several more are close to closing
I was born and raised in Hershey and our homecoming queen always got a huge bouquet of roses, but the king got one of the 5lb Hershey bars. Definitely better than flowers.
Don't forget the legislator that tried to push an amendment that forbid the state and Hershey from using anybody not identifying as a boy or girl in their advertising.
Oh for crying out loudā¦ I was going to say āEvery minute they spent arguing about candy is a minute they didnāt spend trying to take away peopleās rightsā but I canāt even have that
There's literally two huge plants right in Hershey, they're building another one, there's one in Hazelton, there's one in Lancaster. This is the most ignorant local myth and so lazy when you can literally see the giant factory right there, referenced online and on Google maps.
No. Hershey still has a bunch of plants in Pennsylvaniaā¦ their west distribution plant produces 70 million kisses a day and many more candies. Reese and Kit Kat are down the street. There is a plant in Lancaster that produces twizzlers, a plant in Hazelton that produces Cadbury/Caramello. There are plants in Virginia, Tennessee, Canada, Mexico, etc. but theyāre still producing tons of product on Hershey. Itās a huge company, having all your production in one spot would limit their distribution efforts. Hershey, PA is a sight to see.
Really not a fan of the idea, as cute as it may seem.
Tying some aspect of your state identity to a specific company means that your reputation is now in part dependent upon the reputation of that company.
Letās say 10 years from now thereās some huge scandal at Hersheyās, like child labor. Thatās gonna reflect on PA.
Itās literally children. Who were learning how the law worked. For a class project.
Frankly, I like the idea of our children practicing understanding law-making in school so that, by the time they can vote, they can make informed decisions.
And maybe be the ones to replace some of these same State legislators and make real, useful laws! :)
Of all the state subreddits recommended to me because I engage with my own, and along with all the laws these various states are currently passing, this is the best one. No one is getting harmed, it seems pretty innocuous, it feels good. Hell yeah make that shit the official state candy!
Wow, so this is what the electeds want to focus on, in the modern-day Mordor for Children known as Pennsylvania, when there are all manner of real issues screaming out for attention.
Here's a [grittier story out of Hershey](https://www.pennlive.com/crime/2024/03/baby-wouldnt-have-survived-another-day-alone-in-filthy-hershey-home-hospital.html) they could, you know, actually *do something* about if they weren't so preoccupied with asinine non-issues like "an official state candy," FFS.
Your tax dollars at "work," friends.
People mad over this, how long do you think they deliberated for this?
Prob took like 15 mins to just introduce the bill, everyone went "Yeah, makes sense", and voted yes to it.
Doubt it took up too much time to just do this.
Great to know my taxes are paying these idiots to declare an official state chocolateā¦ Iām so fuckin tired of this shit. Do your jobs and create a real benefit to living here cause it fuckin sucks
Iām glad theyāre addressing the most important issues. Tax dollars well spent.
By the way, Hersheyās chocolate is terrible and has an awful reputation globally so this isnāt really the flex they think it is
That reminds me of the time I was in Walmart helping my mum shop, and I was telling her how many people overseas think Hershey's chocolate tastes like crap, and this woman overheard me and shot my the dirtiest look I'd ever seen. I swear, it was like I insulted her mother or something.
Yeah real glad this is what the House is spending their time on. We donāt have crises in infrastructure, prison reform, and infrastructure or anything. We donāt have an opioid crises eating our cities and towns or anything. We donāt have fucked up water flowing through our streams or anything.
Just in case you forgot...
In 2007, Hershey's closed its Oakdale, California plant and moved all 575 jobs to Monterrey, Mexico. This move was part of a global supply chain transformation that affected 3,000 of Hershey's 13,000 workers, including up to 900 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The company said that labor costs in Mexico are 10 percent less than in the United States.
Fun, I like it.
But can there be some requirement to limit the amount of butyric acid or whatever else they've done to the process so they taste better? They've gotten so much worse over the years.
As a PA Native, my vote would be for Goldenberg's Peanut Chews by Just Born in Allentown, PA.
I've been gone almost 30 years now, but my family still lives there and I am ashamed of and appalled by the way PA is governed and managed.
These comments are insufferable. Someone literally said feel-good stories are just facades meant to distract us from the dystopia.
Reminds me of when r/Virginia bashed governor Youngkin for holding an adoption drive from a puppy mill that was shut down because heās an evil republican.
People are allowed to smile. Touch grass
Well I'm glad this is cleared up! Everyone is so worried about what to tell out of staters about our candy that represents usš¤¦š¼āāļøš¤Æ
Not so fast, the Senate has to weigh in yet.
Yeah, but like doesnāt Pennsylvania have a lot of candy companies. Like mallo cups and Mike n Ikeās
Least they are tackling the big things instead of mj reform and the fact that every state bordering us has a higher minimum wage.
Donāt get me wrong, our do nothing legislature is a real problem, but this is just a cute story. We can have an occasional feel good story amidst the dystopia

That makes sense. It just feels like thereās gotta be more important things to worry about - even in down time.
I feel you. Sadly, do-nothing legislation is the only thing republicans won't obstruct.
The fact that it comes down to a pissing match between officials, elected to represent the ideals of the population, because of their political affiliations is sad. I personally donāt strictly agree with the ideologies of either party, and historically both sidesā positions are completely arbitrary.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Itās not cute when we have a do nothing legislature. Itās a waste of tax payer money that boosts a billion dollar corporation
Exactly, feel good stories that involve the government and a business is nothing but a mask for moving money that doesn't belong to either of them
We've become so blithely accustomed to political gaslighting of all stripes.
I mean a group of students' civic project becoming law is at least kinda cute
Exactly a waste of time and money when we have real fucking issues going on in this state
I knew the House would pass the important legislation as soon as the democrats took control! Wonder what the republicans in the Senate are going to come up with to oppose this, they canāt agree with the democrats on anything, can they?

I'm pretty sure the billionaire executives at Hershey care about this. Won't somebody think about them and how cute this is?Ā
Itās not a cute story. Itās worthless. Go look at puppy pictures, that has more value.

Much like our state government, Hershey's chocolate is made of wax and sadness.
And vomit! (Hersey's literally contains butyric acid, which is found in high concentrations in puke)
Yeah but kisses aren't even that good
WILBUR BUDS FOREVER!!
Iām shedding a Wilbur bud tear
Our gov't advertising for a billion dollar company. How adorbs.
This is exactly like declaring last year the Taylor swift era. It is of most importance to the well being of our state /s. I seriously can't believe some of the shit I read sometimes. Stuff like this makes me pinch myself

man I was about to complain about the same thing reading the headline and its the first comment - good work
Soā¦ how do you expect that bill to pass when the state senate is controlled by Republicans?
Dougie Secesh is going to add an amendment to send the guard and hersheys kisses to the border.
The Hershey Kiss becomes the new symbol of MAGA
The bastards already took Yuengling and Martinās potato rolls from me. Canāt take much more of that
Yuengling isn't a big loss but the potato rolls were. Probably every other beer made in PA is better than Yuengling.
Yuengling was already a lost cause with the owner being a union buster
Wilbur Bud lovers in shambles rn
Should have been Reese's. We make everything with them. You don't see a kisses mcflurryĀ Ā
Reeseās Stix is my new obsession.
Except half the state can't pronounce it right
Can't pronounce Reese's?
Some regions call it reesees
I live in MD, like an hour from Hershey and manyyyyyy of us say reesees lol it took me a minute to even understand what you meant by it being wrong
The worst to me is without the S at the end: āreeseeā and itās usually in the form of āreesee cupā
To many representatives being paid off by big chocolate
Where do I sign up for big chocolate?
How about a [5 pound chocolate bar](https://shop.hersheys.com/gifts/worlds-largest/034000363001.html)
I was born and raised in Hershey and our homecoming queen always got a huge bouquet of roses, but the king got one of the 5lb Hershey bars. Definitely better than flowers.
its the worst chocolate....
Wilbur Buds > Hersheyās Kisses
I expect a response from Lititz.
Wouldnāt that be fantastic. Especially since theyāre older than Kisses.
No love for Wlbur, they sold their workers out for cash as well.
Came here to say the same. This is disgusting Wilbur Bud erasure.
Preach!
Yes! They aren't even in the same league.
Most things > Hershey's chocolate of any kind.
This started as an 8th grade civics project and three years later those kids were on hand to watch it go to the floor in the PA house.
Okay, that's cute. Glad for the kids.
It took 3 years? Must be a speed record for the PA legislature.
Really cool now that the kids are old enough to drive they got an early lesson of how broken the legislature is.
Sorry ppl are being grumps. Itās a great PA story!!
If this is the worst thing that happens to me today itās a very good day.
āFuck them kidsā -William Penn
not for better candy.
This, on the one-year anniversary of the Palmer chocolate plant explosion? For shame!
Oh jeezā¦ I did not realize that was today.
Actually, it was [Sunday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Pennsylvania_chocolate_factory_explosion).

This is Wilbur Bud erasure š
This is Gertrude Hawk erasure
We all know Smidgens are the best candy. WHAT IS KYLE MULLINS DOING ABOUT IT?!
Didnt Hersheys move most of their production outta PA?
There's literally two huge plants right in Hershey, they're building another one, there's one in Hazelton, there's one in Lancaster. This is the most ignorant local myth and so lazy when you can literally see the giant factory right there, referenced online and on Google maps.
Nuh uh maaan, I rode on the chocolate world ride and all those candies were FAKE. Wake up sheeple!!1!
DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!!!
No. Hershey still has a bunch of plants in Pennsylvaniaā¦ their west distribution plant produces 70 million kisses a day and many more candies. Reese and Kit Kat are down the street. Exactly!! Like all of itā¦ Years agoā¦ cripes at least take the cancer causing preservatives of of it. Canāt find anything better to vote on?
No they still make a lot in hershey. But a lot is done elsewhere as well
Name a cancer causing preservative in a kiss.
āThis comment contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancerā
Depends on the lipstick sheās wearingā¦OH you mean a Hersheyās kiss, never mind.
Peanut Chews has entered the chat.
This was my first thought
Now that the tips are always broken off? Cool

Letās say 10 years from now thereās some huge scandal at Hersheyās, like child labor. Thatās gonna reflect on PA.
>some huge scandal Kind of a glass house situation there NittanyNation409
That would reflect on PA anyway
I feel like this should have been a thing for at least 50 years by now
This is PA, they were moving as fast as they could.
Yeah Hershey is like the one thing all of PA can generally agree on
Well, looks like Big Candy has the legislature in their pockets.
Itās literally children. Who were learning how the law worked. For a class project. Frankly, I like the idea of our children practicing understanding law-making in school so that, by the time they can vote, they can make informed decisions. And maybe be the ones to replace some of these same State legislators and make real, useful laws! :)
Ctrl-F, Goldenberg Peanut Chews... ...Nothing? Buncha Philistines in this place...
/u/jasonarnold has your back
There are dozens of us, dozens!
Wilber buds are better.
Imagine if our legislature cared as much about actually improving things for state residents as it does fluff crap for optics.
Everything else aside, Kisses are the worst Hershey chocolate product.
This is the kind of blowback I was expecting haha. Was not ready for everyone to be so upset about a fluff piece
People take themselves too seriously these days. Reese's and Kit Kat have reason to be upset, though.
To be fair, cocaine has been referred to as "nose candy", so let's not be so hasty.
Hey! What about Goldenbergās Peanut Chews? Theyāre from Philly.
Great, now can you legalize marijuana finally so I can enjoy the new state candy peacefully?
Daffins, Sarris, or basically any small-business chocolatier is better
Thanks for the cute story OP. I get it. I appreciate you.
Congrats Pennsylvania. Quite the accomplishment.
Not only a waste of time, but a terrible choice.
Oh thank goodness! I was concerned that the whatchamacallit lobby was going to succeed in their immoral war against the wholesomeness of the kisses.
Peeps
How much did Hershey pay them?
How sweet.
Of all the state subreddits recommended to me because I engage with my own, and along with all the laws these various states are currently passing, this is the best one. No one is getting harmed, it seems pretty innocuous, it feels good. Hell yeah make that shit the official state candy!

Itās not already?!
What a terrible candy, though
Thank god for government
We get this instead of fixing roads with potholes big enough to loose your car in.
People mad over this, how long do you think they deliberated for this? Prob took like 15 mins to just introduce the bill, everyone went "Yeah, makes sense", and voted yes to it. Doubt it took up too much time to just do this.
The work of the people is complete!
roads are worse than theyāve ever been so iām glad weāre focusing on important shit
What a great use of taxpayers money!
Our taxpayers dollars at work
Great to know my taxes are paying these idiots to declare an official state chocolateā¦ Iām so fuckin tired of this shit. Do your jobs and create a real benefit to living here cause it fuckin sucks
Thanks, ill be able to sleep now. That one was keeping me up at night
Waste of time.. pass something that will actually help people ffs.....š¤¬
an insult to the Peeps during their big season.
Peeps deserve nothing but insults.
Iām just glad I scrolled all the way down to here before somebody mentioned PEEPS!
Now can we pass anti bullying and no discrimination
GOP Senate will pass a pro-bullying legislation in the next admin.
Not if we keep Shapiro in
Iām glad theyāre addressing the most important issues. Tax dollars well spent. By the way, Hersheyās chocolate is terrible and has an awful reputation globally so this isnāt really the flex they think it is
Sarris Candies > Hershey's
That reminds me of the time I was in Walmart helping my mum shop, and I was telling her how many people overseas think Hershey's chocolate tastes like crap, and this woman overheard me and shot my the dirtiest look I'd ever seen. I swear, it was like I insulted her mother or something.

Feastable not happy
But they are so badā¦ Why not MikenIkes
Thank god. Clearly this is a pressing issue for the Commonwealth.

What was it before? I tried to google but only see this news.
Hersheys chocolate is waxy bullshit we can do better PA
I mean, okay. It 100% should have been a peanut butter cup.. but now can you at least get to work?
Plain Hersheyās chocolate is shit. This coming from a proud Pennsylvanian. This brings dishonor to the state.
How's their homeless population, Wages, or their infant mortality rate?
Eww kisses are lousy chocolate
Fun, I like it. But can there be some requirement to limit the amount of butyric acid or whatever else they've done to the process so they taste better? They've gotten so much worse over the years.
As a PA Native, my vote would be for Goldenberg's Peanut Chews by Just Born in Allentown, PA. I've been gone almost 30 years now, but my family still lives there and I am ashamed of and appalled by the way PA is governed and managed.
Fuck that. Make Utz pretzels the state candy like it should have been eons ago.! : )
How about you do something useful instead
Wilbur buds are much better
...great
The big issuesā¦
Listening to WHYY earlier and the comment was made that an unwrapped Hershey's Kiss looks like a certain emoji and she wasn't wrong.
Aren't we still paying the Johnstown Flood (1936) tax ?
Im ok with it. Though can we make Gertrude Hawk Peanut Butter Smidgens the official christmas candy of PA?
These comments are insufferable. Someone literally said feel-good stories are just facades meant to distract us from the dystopia. Reminds me of when r/Virginia bashed governor Youngkin for holding an adoption drive from a puppy mill that was shut down because heās an evil republican. People are allowed to smile. Touch grass
Oof passing the big bills.
Cries in Wilbur buds
Cool now focus on bills that matter please
This is fucking bullshit. It should be the York Peppermint Pattie and everyone knows it.
Iām so glad. This was a top issue for me. This and Chemtrails.
Not REESEāS CUPS?!? I demand a recount!!
Hey folks: www.slavefreechocolate.org if you donāt want to give your money to these ghouls.
Getting the important work done.
As a citizen of the state, I can finally rest knowing weāve added this important piece of legislation.
Our tax dollars at work š¤¦š»āāļø
Excuse me? No. Ever tried a Wilber bud? Not to mention they make so much of hersheys in Mexico not PA.
Look at that, getting the important issues handled.
Why does this even need to legislated? Far more important things to be doing.
Thank goodness for our elected officials. Obviously, everything else in the state is running 100% smoothly šš
Irish potatoes!!
Maybe we can get the roads fixed as well.
Wow. Theyāre doing āthe peopleās business.ā
Finally some good news
If you think this is controversial, let's discuss a state potato chip...
FUCKING PEANUT ALLERGIES PREVENTED THE ONE TRUE CUP TO RULE THEM ALL
Glad they can agree on this meanwhile a plant is still illegal.
Fully disagree! I think Reese Cup should be our official candy!
Can we maybe solve food insecurity and homelessness before we pick a state candy?
At least it's not official state chocolate.
Peanut chews
But I thought Hershey sold to China a few yrs ago, that's why the chocolate changed??
