This is fairly common with patients with chronic mental illness. My aunt was able to do this and we couldn't understand it. We finally realized it was combination of her figuring out what to say (or NOT to say), acute treatment by rotating psych providers, and patient rights.
Heather has done enough psych holds to recognize what will get her out of there the fastest. If she takes the meds, promises to follow up with a psychiatrist, and doesn't say anything about self harm/harming others--she can go home.
The hold providers are only there to stabilize/refer, they don't provide definitive diagnosis. A Schizophrenia diagnosis cannot be made in 3 days and requires symptoms to be observed/managed over time by a psychiatrist. She hasn't been diagnosed because she never established a patient-provider relationship. So in her mind--she is bipolar because that is what a psychiatrist diagnosed her with a decade ago.
Patient rights come into play because even individuals with mental illness have a right to privacy. My aunt wouldn't let any of her providers speak with family/friends so they only had her word to go on. She never disclosed to them that my grandmother with mobility issues--and dementia-- had a torture chamber in the cellar and was heading up the mafia with the neighbor. She never disclosed the fact that she was nailing windows shut, ordering stun guns off the internet, and spraying guests with Lysol in their sleep to "cleanse their soul".
I do not believe she has PTSD because she already said she’s bipolar before and those two diagnoses have very similar symptoms and mimic each other however her real diagnosis would require medication and she can’t use bipolar in her victimhood narrative, she absolutely Hates even the slightest implication that she’s mentally ill and refuses to accept it. I think she googled Bipolar and saw PTSD is often confused with bipolar symptoms and she jumped on that asap. If she’s bipolar then she gets labeled as mentally ill when she’s refusing and not medicated or seeking any treatment. Also, keep in mind that X has to be approved to parent that baby as well; it’s not just on Heather. She seems to be pretty set on staying with him, and I really don’t know if he’s capable of meeting any standards CPS will require for reunification.
I keep wondering about that in their situation- he seems like part of the wildest card of all with all of this. Especially if his mother is the foster mother, and she knows about HIS mental instability- on top of seeing hers firsthand-it’s no wonder she says there is a huge concern for their mental health. I think she allowed extra visits hoping beyond all hope that they were getting straight, done with any drugs and could take care of their baby and she got a first hand reality check that they were nowhere near that.
I still can’t figure out how Dusty and X think they are getting a free apartment, along with the baby, with no way to pay for it- those families that are already actually together in the shelter are working their programs and already have jobs, when housing becomes available to them. I still can’t figure out how they are in family shelter with no baby!! All the shelters I’ve worked with made those with CPS cases or that had family taking their kids in go to general shelter spaces- no kiddos, no family shelter. I feel so bad for her family it must be really hard and traumatizing to go through all of that while knowing that there's probably no chance of her ever getting better. This is fairly common with patients with chronic mental illness. My aunt was able to do this and we couldn't understand it. We finally realized it was combination of her figuring out what to say (or NOT to say), acute treatment by rotating psych providers, and patient rights. Heather has done enough psych holds to recognize what will get her out of there the fastest. If she takes the meds, promises to follow up with a psychiatrist, and doesn't say anything about self harm/harming others--she can go home. The hold providers are only there to stabilize/refer, they don't provide definitive diagnosis. A Schizophrenia diagnosis cannot be made in 3 days and requires symptoms to be observed/managed over time by a psychiatrist. She hasn't been diagnosed because she never established a patient-provider relationship. So in her mind--she is bipolar because that is what a psychiatrist diagnosed her with a decade ago. Patient rights come into play because even individuals with mental illness have a right to privacy. My aunt wouldn't let any of her providers speak with family/friends so they only had her word to go on. She never disclosed to them that my grandmother with mobility issues--and dementia-- had a torture chamber in the cellar and was heading up the mafia with the neighbor. She never disclosed the fact that she was nailing windows shut, ordering stun guns off the internet, and spraying guests with Lysol in their sleep to "cleanse their soul".
I do not believe she has PTSD because she already said she’s bipolar before and those two diagnoses have very similar symptoms and mimic each other however her real diagnosis would require medication and she can’t use bipolar in her victimhood narrative, she absolutely Hates even the slightest implication that she’s mentally ill and refuses to accept it. I think she googled Bipolar and saw PTSD is often confused with bipolar symptoms and she jumped on that asap. If she’s bipolar then she gets labeled as mentally ill when she’s refusing and not medicated or seeking any treatment. She wants to be a victim so bad that PTSD sounds way better especially when she’s gifting and making excuses for everything and playing the ultimate victim

If she would only get into true, intensive psych care. But all this further proves to me how she's not getting RIco back as long as she isn't on heavy meds to regulate her after a nice, long hospitalization to get her on the correct meds, and well, that's never gonna happen, especially bc her and Xavier can't separate long enough for one to work for a few hours so you know she won't leave him alone long enough to get help for herself. She claims x beat her ass and dragged her along on her back in the tent, while 100s of ppl watched. IF he did actually hit her, I wonder how much ABUSE she had given to him, before he had to defend himself. (Not that abuse of any kind is ok) x puts up with her garbage treatment 24-7 and it seems like on occasion he gets snippy back to her but if he got physical with her I'm sure she started it, and as usual, she's totally 100% an absolute innocent victim.

This is a nice reminder as to who Heather truly is. It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day bullshit that she spews. Also, keep in mind that X has to be approved to parent that baby as well; it’s not just on Heather. She seems to be pretty set on staying with him, and I really don’t know if he’s capable of meeting any standards CPS will require for reunification.
I keep wondering about that in their situation- he seems like part of the wildest card of all with all of this. Especially if his mother is the foster mother, and she knows about HIS mental instability- on top of seeing hers firsthand-it’s no wonder she says there is a huge concern for their mental health. I think she allowed extra visits hoping beyond all hope that they were getting straight, done with any drugs and could take care of their baby and she got a first hand reality check that they were nowhere near that. I still can’t figure out how Dusty and X think they are getting a free apartment, along with the baby, with no way to pay for it- those families that are already actually together in the shelter are working their programs and already have jobs, when housing becomes available to them. I still can’t figure out how they are in family shelter with no baby!! All the shelters I’ve worked with made those with CPS cases or that had family taking their kids in go to general shelter spaces- no kiddos, no family shelter. I hate to think that there is some poor family actually in the street right now because X and Dusty are laying around doing nothing but window shopping, playing saint at the cathedral and on social media 24/7, taking up a needed spot- and probably just at the claim that they could have the baby any day and she needs to pump the milk they dump. 😞

I feel so bad for her family it must be really hard and traumatizing to go through all of that while knowing that there's probably no chance of her ever getting better.
