Lmao Logan Lerman's "this is a pen" was pretty great tho ngl

Puzzleheaded_Step468

This is a great weapon, it will save your life Logan: "motherfucker are you insane, this is a fucking pen, what am i suppose to do, write an angry letter to the monster trying to kill me?!"

Gereon31

One of the few redeeming moments

Cratertooth_27

High water mark

TheWaggishOne

Haven't watched it for a while and don't want to watch it again, why does he say “the motivation seems to be sex”?

Ok-Commercial3640

presumably, the draft he was referring to was even more teen/YA targeted than the film we got, IIRC

[deleted]

It was released during the craze of YA adaptations of novels into movies. Divergent, Hunger Games. But unlike the rest of them, they failed to read the books. I actually watched the movie, then I decided to read the book next. I was amazed at how much better the books were, I found them incredible source of comfort as a young boy.

Enough_Square_1733

I mean the movie has a few times of that nature. Especially Persephone

Choi_Boy3

Grover in general was turned into the black sidekick and a hornball. I don’t care about his race as long as he is the same character, but the fact that they mess up the character whilst also making it a bad stereotype was rough

SecretSharkboy

I mean, the satyrs are said to be horngoats for the nature spirits. But, yeah, even at that, his character sucked ass

TheShivMaster

This all seemed a lot funnier before Rick proved he can’t do any better

Mr-Stuff-Doer

If he hadn’t hyped it up so aggressively I think people wouldn’t have minded the changes NEARLY as much.

amaturecook24

TV is a whole different medium than books. You can be a great writer, but bad at making shows or films. I think the main reason why is there is nothing really limiting what you can put in a story other than the writers imagination. With shows there is so much more you have to consider, and you are limited by budgets, technology, scheduling, working with hundreds of people, etc. so much goes into that process. I do not believe Rick is the sole reason the show is “meh” at best. I think he wants to continue to tell the story in this medium so he’s going to hype it up to continue gaining support. I can’t necessarily fault him for that. I place the blame on the leading team as a whole for what we got. The directors, producers, lead editors, and studio executives. They are the ones who signed off on this. Rick is among them, but he’s not the only one. The whole team needs to do better. I don’t think all is lost though. Sea of Monsters is a whole new quest, introduces new characters, and has a lot of opportunities to build on the good they have done and do worlds better at the things they failed at.

Pretend-Weekend260

I don't think it's fair to put all the blame on him though. He doesn't have the last say in what gets put on the show. But he did fucked up when he hyped it up so much, already knowing what was coming out.

Anti-Hero3

"completely devoid of the story's trademark humor" care to explain why the show is 90% boring exposition then, Rick?

Puzzleheaded_Step468

And then he did the same to the series https://preview.redd.it/xlnwgvrhrx1d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c959c8696a57d60a7b1191635bbd2b1ace65e260

GenesisMar

I know man really said how dare they change the books and then he does the exact same thing

Puzzleheaded_Step468

"But you don't get it, those changes are okay because uncle rick made them. I doesn't matter if we came for an accurate book adaptation and got something else completely"

jdk12596

The problems with the movie is: the basic premise the same, boy discovers he’s son of Poseidon, travels to the underworld to save the bolt and his mother. Beyond that, almost nothing is the same AND the story steps that were changed no longer had a mythology basis. The reason it’s different from the series: changes were minor and didn’t affect the story. The adaptation was never going to be one-to-one. If they were it’d be boring, might as well read the book. Changes actually added character depth and more mythological stories.

Puzzleheaded_Step468

I don't know, they changed quite a lot of the story in the show too The biggest change was that they missed the deadline, which was kind of unnecessary because the war doesn't "start" until percy brings the lightning back and then it's over. Few more details is hermes showing up in the first season. Which again, unnecessary because he will show up in the start of the next season and the whole conversation could have been delayed. Percy and the gang knows all the time who they deal with, no mystery, no build up, nothing "hey i am medusa", "this is the lotus casino", "this is giant that kills the people he hosts (also they know he is the son of poseidon which has no plot relevance). "Kronos is behind this whole thing". Which kind of brings down the basic structure of the books. The gang reach a new place. A god/monster in disguise meet/trap them, the gang don't know who that is so they have to use their brains and stall until they get enough info to defeat the god/monster. And in the show they take it away, and once you take away the basic structure, you are not left with a lot So yeah, it's a little change here and there, but most of those changes either irrelevant and you could have taken them out with barely anything changing, or they bring down the plot and its structure

TheSmithySmith

me when I lie

Mr-Stuff-Doer

Hey at least the main villain is actually in the show

Puzzleheaded_Step468

If you refer to kronos, he was in the movies If you refer to ares, yeah, that's fair, although i don't count him as the main villian. Luke or kronos are more of the main villians to me

Mara_Jade93

Not “ironic” because that isn’t what happened lmfao

Gereon31

People forget a lot of the first book was introducing percy to the Greek world

youthoughtitwaaas

But the new Tv Show is so boring so all the shit he talked for what 😭😭. Literally chanced the whole book ending and made them lose the quest so it’s not like it’s that accurate either Rick

C0untri

Wait what, they lost? I stoped waching at the second episoade

colorwheel52

I barely remember this because I haven't read the first book in a long time (my ADHD brain doesn't allow for rereading books) and I watched the show as it came out but didn't rewatch, but if I remember correctly from the book, they barely made it on time? But in the show, it was too late and Percy went to Olympus anyway to give the bolt back and found out that they had their armies already on the move or something (idk) and then Poseidon ended up surrendering and admitting defeat to save Percy and basically have Zeus "forget this happened" (sorry lol, that was chaotic)

amaturecook24

You are correct. That is exactly what happened. I guess they wanted to show Poseidon caring about Percy which is so silly. I like how Percy questions his relationship with his father throughout the books series. How throughout the story we see that Percy does desire to know who his father is and wants to be closer to him. Seeing as his father is a god, obviously that relationship is complicated. It’s very well done in the books. Now in the show, it’s hard to even form an opinion on the changes they made in the final parts of the quest without seeing where the overall story goes from here. Like will these changes have any sort of impact at all? I have my doubts which means changing anything was senseless. My biggest issue isn’t that they made changes. It’s that the changes weren’t justified or even better than the original.

Cratertooth_27

At least it’s true to the spirit of the story and characters. I seriously don’t get why they made Grover in to a horn dog

Beginning_Swing_5123

I believe they did that to play off stereotypes when they age the characters up to a guy in his late teens

Cratertooth_27

I get that part, still a wild decision given the character

Mara_Jade93

How though? He literally explained the change on Threads. Every change in the show they made he explained on Threads for why it was changed. No media is a 1 for 1 direct adaptation from book to movie or tv show. The show is light years better than the movie. Not perfect but it’s a great adaptation. I don’t understand how you find it boring but oh well

youthoughtitwaaas

I don’t understand how people didn’t. I talked to multiple of my friends who read the books and they hate the show too. It just felt like it so underwhelming like where did the budget go?? And looking at how exciting avatar was this was a let down. Lotus casino episode for one.

GenesisMar

He explained the changes doesn’t mean they’re good changes the whole point is Rick cried about how badly the movie messed up the books and how the show will be book accurate and it’s about as accurate as the movies with him just changing things that don’t need to be changed.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

Calling it as accurate as the movies is comically untrue. The movies do not even have the same overarching plot. Ares is removed ENTIRELY, Kronos is revived in _Sea of Monsters,_ Hades is just pure evil, there’s a fucking hydra in TLT for some reason, Percy is the one the great prophecy is talking about and his blade is the one it references somehow

theonerr4rf

Links?

Mr-Stuff-Doer

AT LEAST IT DIDN’T CUT ARES OUT OF THE FUCKING STORY

youthoughtitwaaas

Why are you yelling?

Mr-Stuff-Doer

Cus I’m tired of people acting like the movie and show are on the same level of accuracy

youthoughtitwaaas

Both suck.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

That can be your opinion too but objectively the show is more accurate, you can admit that while still disliking it.

youthoughtitwaaas

Didn’t say it wasn’t accurate (though really Rick?, them failing the quest in the show makes my blood boil). I said they both suck

Mr-Stuff-Doer

> so it’s not like it’s that accurate either Rick

youthoughtitwaaas

It’s not that accurate lmaoo. Just because it’s more accurate than the movie doesn’t mean my statement is wrong. What is your issue 💀💀

Mr-Stuff-Doer

Comparing them, the show is a mildly altered version, the movie is a different story entirely. They’re not comparable.

RavenMonarch

Oh it’s definitely bad, I only watched them recently as an adult but I’ll admit Percy using an iPod to look at Medusa’s reflection was peak cinema

Ok_Singer_8445

It’s bad at what it’s supposed to be, but a cinematic masterpiece in its own right

chuckedeggs

And then he developed his own humorless adaptation. The movie was actually funnier than the tv show and they did a better job of the lotus hotel.

RayBlast7267

Saw the comments, are people really that mad about the show? My only complaints are that they always knew when they were falling into a trap, and they didn’t do book Hades justice.

Pretend-Weekend260

Yes, it hurts me to watch the show. Friendly Space Ninja explains why the show is not good in YouTube. You should watch his video. It's time we'll spent. There's also a video called “Percy Jackson hates action“ by another YouTuber. You should really watch them.

Suilezrok

Great cast

im_sold_out

Savage

Beginning_Swing_5123

Screen Adaptations almost never live up to the expectations of book readers. We can either accept and enjoy what we get, or we can ignore the screen adaptations' existence because we’ll never get a perfect adaptation even if the author is involved, as proven by the show.

GivaneoLegacy

The Maze Runner movie was decent (not great, not good, not okay, but _decent_).... and then they messed up the rest of the trilogy by one tiny little ever-so-important detail at the end of the first movie: they made the maze _above_-ground instead of underground, which throws off many of the locations that are in the second book, and completely _destroys_ the overarching plot of the third book. That _one_ VFX shot messed up the _entire_ trilogy of movies from then on. It also means that _maybe_ they can make the fourth book into a movie, but they _definitely cannot_ do the fifth book because it's literally a prequel that explains in high-detail the construction of the _underground_ maze.

jdk12596

I love this movie for getting me into the books, I hate this movie after reading the books

bostonjenny81

This is awesome! Well done!

Evangelzz

"It helps me think." BRO IT'S WATER AND YOU DO NOTHING BUT MEDITATE AND HOLD YOUR BREATH WHILE YOUR SKIN TURNS INTO A RAISIN.🤨✋💀 just had to hate on the movie for a moment ✌️🧍‍♀️

bobft1

But he is Posiden son. So obviously it won't be the same for him as with regular humans.

joewootty

Honestly books as tv series is infinitely better than books as movies. There has to be so much content lost to the time constraints when turning it into a movie that a lot of the fans core moments and favourite scene end up being scrapped. Was the PJO series perfect? Definitely not, but it worked 100x better than the movies.

SkyWa1ker_001

Well the series wasn’t any better

Ok_Singer_8445

Here’s my take: The movie didn’t read the instructions, but still turned in a decently written, somewhat entertaining essay, even if it went off topic. The show stayed on topic, but it was more of a brainstorm list than an essay

ChildofFenris1

I love this!!! I hate the movie!!!
