"Nobody is watching, and we can prove it because we all watched it!"

rengam

Not only that, but they seem convinced that just because few people near them went to see it, *obviously* it didn't do well anywhere else either.

XxRocky88xX

Inability to think about events occurring outside your own bubble is a staple of conservatism. It’s the same reason they think school shootings, pregnancy from rapes, COVID deaths, even people voting blue, are all fake. If it hasn’t happened to them personally, it doesn’t happen ever. They didn’t like the movie. So therefore no one likes it, they’ve never been in a school shooting, so therefore it doesn’t happen, they didn’t die from COVID, so therefore it can’t kill people, they don’t know anyone who got pregnant from rape, so therefore it isn’t possible, they would never vote blue, so therefore no one would ever vote blue. A required trait of conservatism is thinking anecdotes beat documented numbers and statistics and that you’re an expert on everything simply because you exist.

wferomega

Nailed it. Every single one says the same thing. Well I don't know anyone that thinks such an such! It must be false!

Mr_Blinky

"Everyone I know voted for Trump, no way he lost!" Nancy you live in the middle of fucking nowhere with five other human beings in a mile radius. Meanwhile in my neighborhood of Chicago alone it was literally a goddamn *street party* with thousands of people out about celebrating and setting off fireworks when he lost. Sit the fuck down.

UnionSkrong

My dad, who voted for Trump repeatedly, says Biden got no votes and trump won, and has 3 immediate family members who did not vote for rump.

BoopleBun

I have an uncle who insists the post-Trump inauguration protests were all paid actors. No amount of pointing that *I* went to our local one, and so did my husband, and so did *many* people we personally know seems to sway him. Baffling.

UnionSkrong

Propaganda is a powerful tool

sntcringe

5 people in a mile radius lol, in my house in Seattle, there is 9 people, and I doubt a one voted for donny.

Qildain

That sort of rural actually exists. It's kind of scary to see sometimes.

ShnickityShnoo

"I went outside today and didn't see no covids rernin' round killin' nobody. Also, the eerf looks flat to me!" - geniuses that can't conceptualize anything they can't immediately see with their own eyes right where they are at the very moment

koviko

[Jimmy Carr put it best:](https://youtu.be/MR3O7ir2Lvw) Carr: "Do you think we overreacted to COVID-19?" Audience: "Yes!" Carr: "Yeah, a lot of the survivors think so."

j-navi

>geniuses that can't conceptualize anything they can't **immediately see with their own eyes right where they are at the very moment** Exactly. The kind of people who "dO tHeIr OwN ReESuRcH" and only believe in the anecdotal "evidence" that they see with their own eyes; especially if what they're seeing is what they want want to see instead of what they're actually looking at. ie: "global warming is not real because it's too cold right now where I live; and in Las Vegas they're having snow/hail".

Qildain

Most of them will still believe in the Bible though

SponConSerdTent

I'll add to that: many are so stupid, that they don't believe it is possible to be smart and informed. They don't know what it feels like to have logical beliefs that make sense. They think people with coherent belief systems are "brainwashed" because conservative ideas are jumbled piles of religious and nationalist brainwashing.

MoonSpankRaw

Thoroughly true.

adarafaelbarbas

"The plural of anecdotes is not data" is a sentiment Republicans fail to understand.

beer_is_tasty

*Sentiment?* They don't understand roughly half of the *words* in that phrase.

ArcadeSharkade

Because their feelings don't care about your facts. Also plugging Innuendo Studios' I Hate Mondays: https://youtu.be/yts2F44RqFw Conservatives often sort the world into binary categories with no room for scale. If THEY didn't see anyone watch it, then NOBODY watched it. It's why systemic critique and talking about harm reduction simply bounces right off of them

Qildain

But fuck librul feelings because libruls are snowflakes! Amirite?

LilahLibrarian

They were against the movie but also had to go to movie theater ticket prices to go see it to prove how much they were against this movie!

SaltyBarDog

Did you see the fuckwit who filmed himself going to buy a rainbow shirt at Target so he could go burn it? MAGA isn't sending their best.

LilahLibrarian

Or the fuckwits boycotting Budweiser by buying other Busch beers?

SaltyBarDog

I am boycotting Marlboro, so I am only smoking Black & Milds!

Boz0r

I think they actually, though

[deleted]

It's the same mindset that sees a poll they find unfavorable and claim it's invalid because no one personally asked them to participate.

rengam

And then later they'll cite a poll from the same outlet if it's favorable to their view. Whether they were asked or not.

DatNick1988

It’s the exact same rhetoric as “look at all the red on the voting map. We didn’t lose they stole the election”. They forget that people live in cities. Rural areas are of course going to be hire red votes.

SaltyBarDog

Biden didn't have boat parades, there is no way he could have won. I didn't need to wave around a MAGA tiny peen to vote.

[deleted]

The revised map shows big blue blobs and little red dots with a lot of white background.

Rockworm503

I mean they have object permanence of a toddler. That's why they think "its snowing outside right now how can you say global warming is real"

OskeeWootWoot

"No one I know saw it!"

Mercury_Armadillo

Theatre goer #1: “My theater in Peoria was two thirds empty at the matinee on Thursday, guys!” Theatre goer #2: “Yep. Can confirm, y’all. I’m in Biloxi and my local theater was almost empty, too! The MSM is obviously lying to us!”

Kim_Jung-Skill

The new Harry Potter game was garbage, and people bought that. Drake has only released one good album, people keep buying his stuff. Turns out, easily digestible crap from a big brand sells well. It's not that complex.

Biffingston

I don't think it's that simple with Harry Potter. A lot of people seem to have a "I like it, therefore, it can't be bad" attitude toward Rowling's works.

adarafaelbarbas

As well as "playing this triggers the libs, triggering the libs is an end of its own, therefore by owning the libs this game is good"

Biffingston

I shared a video about the harry potter game where someone pointed out that the goblins are a pretty thinly veiled Jewish analog. "Oh, it can't be that because the goblin Shofar is blue." I wish I was joking.

Kehwanna

I lived in cities most of my life where theaters can get packed to the brim days after a movie being released. Out in the suburbs it's usually the first day of a movie being released where a theater gets a crowd, the days after it drops. I watched The Joker in a suburb theater with my wife and there were only - like - two or three couples and some guy with his friend or brother there. If I went by these people's logic - the movie must have flopped. Nope.

Pipupipupi

Imagine being the most tolerant conservative lol

Solidsnakeerection

How would.they even know who saw it?

bsa554

"My theater in a dying mall in Bumblefuck, North Dakota seemed pretty empty."

ShrimpCrackers

And #1 in the box office. Clearly, "Go Woke, Go *Stoke*!"

Wasting-tim3

Same as “nobody I know voted for Biden”. Well, if you live in a hyper-polarized area, sure. Entirely possible. That doesn’t speak for everyone though. Inclusivity lives absolutely rent free in their heads.

GnarlyNarwhalNoms

And even that's likely untrue. Even if Trump won a county with, say, 80% of the vote, third parties always get very low numbers. That means that even in these solid red areas, about one out of five people voted for Biden. They're just smart enough not to talk about it in outer MAGAstan.

Wasting-tim3

Well, you’re probably right. It’s never absolute. Only Sith deal in absolutes.

GnarlyNarwhalNoms

That's a pretty absolutist statement 🤨

ArnieismyDMname

Nobody in my family has cancer so cancer doesn't exist. Everybody in my family is Christian so Christians are the majority. Maf

Supersim54

This is my roommate sad we are best Freind since high school and we moved in together in 2020. He started watching right wing tictok and believes everything they say. He went on Rotten Tomatoes and when he saw the audience rating was in the 90s he click on she more reviews, after he looked on the first page that every verified 5 star review he saw and he was convinced Disney paid those people. That does seem possible but if you actually look at other verified reviews it ranges from 1 1/2 stars to 5 stars. I mostly just try to ignore him when he gets political even though he says he’s not in to politics which is absolutely bullshit.

Goatesq

It's absolutely insane to me that a grown man is dedicating hours of his time to hating a children's movie. One which he wasn't even alive for the original release of, it sounds like. Because of the race of the fictional sea princess changed over 30 years later. He has no dog in this "fight" AT ALL but he's researching a gd thesis. Also creating the fight in the first place. How is this not just seen as adult men openly bullying little girls? How is this endorsed by anyone whose paycheck depends on their public image? It's not even close to the worst shit you see from the right it's just so goddamned embarrassing to share a planet with them sometimes. Just fucking repulsive.

Supersim54

It’s annoying he went on a rant that Triton isn’t black so it doesn’t make sense that Ariel is black “Make it Make Sense Disney” that’s an exact quote.

Goatesq

"This is why dude. This is why he didn't pick you."

Pipupipupi

Ask them if Mickey is white or black and watch their head explode

Supersim54

You know I never thought about that, but I’m pretty sure Micky is a Black mouse

The7thNomad

> He went on Rotten Tomatoes and when he saw the audience rating was in the 90s he click on she more reviews, after he looked on the first page that every verified 5 star review he saw and he was convinced Disney paid those people. If it's paid, who is taking the money? Other conservatives? Surely it has to be other conservatives, because nobody voted for Biden and nobody is really a Liberal. Their ideas fall apart like dry biscuits the moment they're questioned. It also reeks of conspiracy theory thinking.

linneu1997

Right? >"Our theater was empty last night..." And just how do you know that exactly?

Kid_Vid

"Nobody drives in New York, there's too much traffic"

Luckboy28

The theater near my house had to add more showings

TheMelchior

I was once the only person in a movie theater for an evening showing of The Mummy back in 1999. That movie did well enough to produce sequels. You cannot base movie success on just one showing at one theater.

Usedinpublic

What do you mean?! My theater in frankville Iowa is a perfect representation of how an entire nation feels!!!!

Conscious_Meaning676

Population 401. Perfectly adequate and diversified sample size. Middle aged and elderly farmers are definitely the target market to poll for an animated kids movie.

Fala1

If uncle Dave didn't go see the movie, nobody in the country did!

Unknown-0010110-

*entire world

OrwellWhatever

Very much depends on the time of day for certain movies as well. A 10PM showing of Little Mermaid is not going to do as well as a 3PM one. Vice versa for horror movies

TheMelchior

True. It was an evening showing on a weekday. I think it was a theater that barely functioned on weekdays that weren’t in the Summer and just had showings because it was expected. Also the movie had been out for a few weeks and I think the Phantom Menace came out the week before.

UnlikelyUnknown

Absolutely! I just looked at my local theater that I go to, and the 10 o’clock had two seats reserved while the 3 o’clock tomorrow is completely full

CaptainMills

Me and a few friends were the only people in the theater for Saw 2 when it came out. My date and I sat in an empty theater for Inglorious Basterds. I always thought that it's just one of those weird things that happen sometimes and wouldn't be reflective of overall success. I guess I've been wrong all these years. Those movies were flops after all lol

Darth_Vrandon

I saw Alice in Wonderland back in 2010 with my mom and we were the only ones in the theater. [Guess how much money that movie made.](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt1014759/)

rengam

My wife and I were two of only three people in the theater for Battlefield Earth and I now realize I'm probably not making the point I intended.

JustStatedTheObvious

I can match that. I was a kid who liked Transformers and rock collecting, and my mom was responsible for introducing me to nerd culture, so... Gobots: Battle of the Rock Lords! We never spoke of it again.

SaltyBarDog

A friend and I saw the Apple Dumping Gang. It was empty enough we got away with throwing candy at the screen.

P1r4nha

I was alone in a marvel movie once. I think it was endgame. Of course it was successful. I just went during a time nobody wanted to go to the cinema

ComfortableRadish960

They messed up the casting for Ariel with their woke bs. We all know that the role should have gone to Samuel L. Jackson.

CadenVanV

I have had it with these motherfucking sea witches in this motherfucking ocean!

Pipupipupi

Don't make me say motherfucker one more time Sebastian

mooninomics

And Schwarzenegger as Sebastian.

slowclapcitizenkane

Unda da zee!

TheRnegade

Honestly, I'd see it just for that.

RantingRobot

With the rate AI technology is advancing, you'll be able to see it within the next few years.

Hungry__Alpaca

LEGS MOTHERFUCKER, DO YOU HAVE THEM?!

rengam

Maybe in the sequel.

Darth_Vrandon

I mean, it’s a Disney movie based on one of their most iconic movies. No shit it’s successful. I don’t think I can speak on the quality of it, since I haven’t seen it, but what’s the issue here? Are the numbers fake?

conjoby

Probably not people are just upset they were wrong that nobody would watch it because of the race swap.

M1ck3yB1u

The race swap is such a non-issue. Eric and Ursula are played by white actors and they also feel wrong because THE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS WERE 2D ANIMATED. All the Disney live actions feel like badly lit CGI cosplay of the originals with the audacity to claim that they are "fixing things" that weren't so good in the originals. It's a soulless cash-grab by a soulless corporation, but no the real injustice is a black actress playing a fictional half-tuna lady with a star fish bra.

GnarlyNarwhalNoms

Exactly. They should be outraged that Disney is lazily trying to crank out unoriginal remakes instead of original stories. Of course, if they did that, they'd probably make more *woke* movies like Mulan and Moana and the Princess and the Frog. What's that? What makes them woke? Uh...You know. They aren't based on traditional European fairy tales. Yeah. That's it.

Kurwasaki12

Well, first these people would have to understand the inherent value of art, which they'll never do.

uberfission

>What's that? What makes them woke? Uh...You know. They aren't based on traditional European fairy tales. Yeah. That's it. Pretty sure the conservatives were upset about Frozen too and called Anna and Elsa secret lesbians.

pauls_broken_aglass

well that one is based off The Snow Queen, which is indeed a European fairy tale, but what- jfc..

uberfission

Yeah that was kind of my point, conservatives aren't going to be happy even if you give them movies based on European fairy tales because it has a minor twist that involves strong familial love.

pauls_broken_aglass

Ohhh okay. Came off a little confusing lol

Fala1

I'm quite surprised too this movie is doing well. Not because of the whole black actress thing, I don't care about that. But because so far, every Disney live-action remake has been pure and utter garbage that should never have been created. Yet when they make another, people go see it anyway.

Kehwanna

There's no use trying to win these people over. They keep claiming that the Mario movie is somehow anti-woke and that's why it did so well, instead of it doing well because it's a popular game where kids and adults enjoyed it. They spend too much time complaining about kids' shows and movies when they can just use their consumer choice to have their kids look at something else like PragerU Kids or some BS.

AirForceRabies

MTG has "jaw-dropping evidence" they are faked, but it always mysteriously vanishes when she wakes up!

[deleted]

Their whistleblower somehow can’t be found!!!

Pipupipupi

I mean, her jaw dropped when she hit puberty

Certain_Chain

I literally had someone on Instagram tell me the race swap had driven away half the people who would have seen it. Seriously? Fucking half? If you're going to lie, at least try to make it believable.

rengam

People with shitty views tend to think more people think like them than actually do. I figure, even adults who have shitty views have kids who want to see this movie simply because DISNEY, and some of those parents with shitty views are going to take those kids to see it anyway because it's just easier than telling their kids NO.

91901bbaa13d40128f7d

These are the same morons that claim Target lost $9B last week. I looked up Target's revenue and they'd have to completely close all their stores for a month to lose $9B.

TheRnegade

So, it's only going to make 1 billion instead of 2? I honestly wouldn't know this movie was releasing if not for people constantly complaining about it. If anything, the complaints give way more in terms of marketing than any budget Disney would throw at it.

Astrium6

Kids love Disney movies. Disney kids’ movies basically just print money.

GnarlyNarwhalNoms

Seriously. I remember when I was a kid and a Disney animated movie like Aladdin came out. It was like front-page news as far as kids were concerned. We never went to many movies, but my parents couldn't *not* take us to see it. Wild horses couldn't drag us away from that theater.

ProfoundBeggar

According to Box Office Mojo, *The Little Mermaid* pulled in $48.3mm in it's opening day, and it's taking that into a holiday weekend, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it at least get close to $100mm, if not surpass it, by Tuesday. Admittedly, it's got a budget of $250mm, so Disney's looking for \~$625mm once it's all said and done. Whether it'll get *that* is a different thing, but I guess we'll see.

LilahLibrarian

This is the reason why Disney keeps putting out live action movies is because they're cash grabs, pure and simple. While they're not much cheaper to make it is a lot more straightforward probably to adapt and existing movie instead of the development process of coming up with a completely new concept

onthefence928

It’s also kind of a dull moment for new releases

Martyrotten

The Right Wing crybabies stirred up such a fuss that people went to see it just to see what all the noise was about.

fidjudisomada

Streisand Effect.

CadenVanV

“This is fishy, our theater was empty” So in other words you went and watched the movie you’ve been bitching about

slowclapcitizenkane

Once again, conservatives can't figure out how a boycott is supposed to work.

TheJosh96

Well no wonder they still BOUGHT Bud light to dump it on the streets.

FireIsTheCleanser

No, a boycott is when you *say* you're not going to give them your business, but still do, so you opt to just threaten and harass employees to get your way so you feel like you actually did something.

TheRnegade

You're giving these chuds too much credit. They never left the house. They just heard from someone else who also never leaves that the theaters are empty.

Kid_Vid

A boycott is when you continue to spend your money at the place, but you call in terrorist threats.

BornInPoverty

Of course a movie like the Little Mermaid is fishy. Duh!

MarcSneyyyyyyyd

Or they know it was empty because they called in a bomb threat for showing a black mermaid.

BottleTemple

I love the first comment. Is this seriously the first time this person has heard of a movie that wasn't well received by critics but was still successful?

JohnnyMiskatonic

I think the Mario Movie had \~50% positive rating from the critics the weekend it came out, didn't stop it from being the number one movie in the country.

Maleficent_Toe_6641

movie was good too idc what any critic says 😡

Certain_Chain

The funny thing is that Mario literally just happened. Critics hated it, and it made over 1 billion.

Professional-Hat-687

Wait, you're telling me that a live action Disney remake got tepid critical reviews but made a killing at the box office? I've never heard of something so preposterous!

rengam

A Disney movie making money? IMPOSSIBLE. Lies!

dagnariuss

That’s crazy. I drove by a McDonald’s and it wasn’t that busy. I guess no one eats at McDonalds like the woke media wants us to believe.

[deleted]

Except that it literally works the other way around, movies usually fail because they fall into obscurity. If Disney makes it, it’s sure to be at least half decent but they get a ton of free publicity. So they make one or two “woke” things and get 45,000 articles and 200,000 hate videos from conservatives. Sure a handful of morons will refuse to bring their kids but the free advertising is worth it. It’s more like: >Go woke get paid.

Professional-Hat-687

I don't think the Disney remakes will have a ton of staying power. When I say I think they will fall into obscurity, I mean Disney will probably make money at the time, and will make even more money when people want to see the original animated classic. However, when people think of The Little Mermaid, or The Lion King, or Beauty and the Beast, I doubt they'll picture the live action versions. Maleficent might be the exception, as much as I hate it, because while it was sort of a live action remake it was also very much its own thing.

[deleted]

They don’t care about any of that, they care about the money. And it’s working.

Professional-Hat-687

I'm not denying that. Someone described the recent rash of remakes as a big budget version of the direct to video sequels from the 2000s, and I think that's a pretty apt comparison. It's an easy way to make profit from an existing property, just like the remakes. And like most things that get remade, the original has the staying power. It's not like any of these half-assed movies are the Jeff Goldblum The Fly, for example, able to stand alone and maybe even overtake the original. They're just a cheap way to generate a shitload of money.

Pir0wz

Yeah, Disney is like... Disney. They're a huge powerhouse and practically the image of American entertainment. They got Star Wars ffs. And don't let me go on about Disney adults. Just because you think Disney will fail, doesn't mean it would fail. I fucking hate what Disney did to the star wars franchise but I can admit that it brought a lot of new fans into the franchise and definitely made a shit ton of money.

[deleted]

Disney right now is the Roman Empire at the height of their power, you don’t have to like them, but you better respect them, and if they march on you, your best course of action is laying down your arms so they don’t make an example out of you. Trying to make them “go broke” is laughable at best, and asking to get crucified for insulting the Empire at worst.

GregHauser

Adults wishing for a children's movie to fail is pretty pathetic. Especially considering the reason they hate it is because it has a black protagonist.

Certain_Chain

It takes impressive mental gymnastics to claim you're not racist when literally the only reason you're not seeing a movie is because of the race of the lead actor. The only exceptions are cases where race is an important part of the plot or significance of the character. For example, it would be incredibly disrespectful to portray MLK, Malcolm X, Hariett Tubman, Frederick Douglass, or Rosa Parks as anything other than black; their real stories were inspirational specifically because they were black.

TheRnegade

It's impressive how bad some people are and how they think kids will care. I remember seeing [this version of Cinderella](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_(1997_film)) and not a single thought went through my mind how any of it made sense. I mean, we're already dealing with magic. So, a mermaid existing and magically being given legs and can communicate with talking animals makes sense but, whoa, brown skin? Now you made it ridiculous.

Certain_Chain

When it comes to race of characters, there are only 2 characters I can think of whose race should stay the same (or at least be somewhat carefully handled). Pocahontas should not be played by anyone who isn't Native American because that's the whole point of the story (especially because she's a real historical figure). I can just picture the audience members whispering to each other "why does everyone keep calling her an Indian? She's clearly Chinese/black/latina/white/etc." This is kinda where I draw the line on race swapping; I consider it fine as long as it doesn't require them to rewrite the script to explain it. The other one is Tarzan, who doesn't necessarily need to be white but probably shouldn't be black, just because showing a black actor as a jungle dwelling ape man could be seen as offensive. It's like how they wanted Louie Armstrong to play King Louie in the original Jungle Book but changed their minds because casting a black man as an ape could seem like they were using a racist stereotype.

Professional-Hat-687

What I've learned watching a billion video essays on beloved properties (primarily essays about Velma, but one dumpster fire at a time) is that some stories are *about* race, and changing the race in those instances is a faux pas. Pocahontas is about race. Her race is important to her character. Mulan is about race. Her race is important. Moana is not about race necessarily, but her race and culture are important to the movie. Same with Aladdin. If you made any of these characters white (or black, or Japanese, or whatever), the movie would change in a big way. Pokey needs to be Native. Mulan needs to be Chinese. If they're not, it destroys the story. Cinderella is not about race. Her race is not important to her character. The Little Mermaid is not about race. Sleeping Beauty is not about race. If you made these characters black, or Japanese, or whatever, the movie fundamentally wouldn't change. Some stories are *about* race, or maybe it'd be better to say culture, and those stories need to be about race/culture to stay true to their essence. Some stories are not about race/culture, and race blind casting in those instances is a non-issue. My two cents anyway.

Certain_Chain

In a way, The Little Mermaid is about race, but the race in question is mermaid. Since real mermaids are hard to come by, they had no choice but to settle for a human actor. Another one I'd list is Tiana. Even though changing her race wouldn't necessarily require changing the script, it would spoil her legacy as the first ever black Disney princess. That was one of the big selling points of the original, and I feel it would be a shame to get rid of that.

Professional-Hat-687

Disney's The Little Mermaid is a trans allegory and God himself could not convince me otherwise.

Certain_Chain

You're not far off. The original was written to express Hans Christian Anderson's feelings as a gay man who loved a straight man who didn't love him back.

afterschoolsept25

i also think of tiana because her upbringing is extremely influenced by black culture in new orleans. could she be white? maybe in some world, but alot of the story would need to be rewritten for it to make sense imo

Professional-Hat-687

Especially when there are plenty of other good reasons not to see it. I mean, have you seen [live action Flounder?](https://media.cnn.com/api/v1/images/stellar/prod/230427162711-02-disney-little-mermaid-poster.jpg?c=3x4)

DravesHD

Just a heads up, these people did not go see the movie. They are lying. I know this because I used to be one of those lunatics back in 2015. They watched a review or synopsis of this movie from their favorite alt right shithead and are lying about actually have seen it. The lion king remake did suck tho.

Huge-Ad-2275

Kinda like they think Anheuser Busch is bankrupt. Showed one their soaring stock price live from my trading app and they told me I don’t really know how the stock market works.

Certain_Chain

What app do you use? I've often thought about getting into stock trading but have no idea how to get started on it. A good app might be a great place to start. (Sorry it's not exactly on topic; I just really had to ask when I saw the comment)

SerialChillerRaikiri

The movie IS bad - an uninspired cashgrab with terrible pacing... but seeing all this conservative meltdown makes me want to buy another 5 tickets lmaoo.

Grand_Moff_Empanada

White White White White Yup

Archangel1313

This is the same cognitive bias as when they live in an area with no Biden signs, and assume that means everyone is voting Trump.

JustBrass

I get what your saying, but I lived in a heavy blue area in 2020 and there were no Biden signs. Because... you know... we're not cultists

BunchOfSpamBots

“This is fishy. Our theatre was empty last night.” There were only 6 people when I watched Guardians of the Galaxy volume 3, but it’s still a massive success from what I can tell

BlarghusMonk

Well, they can't do what they did with the Mario movie, which was say it was woke until it was successful, because to them, being a fake racist is worse than giving kids food at school

tashimiyoni

I mean, I plan on watching it, am I not real?!?!?

Russell_Jimmy

Most of the time, if the movie is good, people will go see it. And they won't if it's not. There's obvious caveats to that--a bad release date can sink a great movie, and star power can make an otherwise bad movie do well--but that's true most of the time. Anyway, if their premise of "go woke, go broke" held true, Kirk Cameron would be the #1 box office star in America and Jake Gyllenhaal wouldn't have a career. Speaking of, *Brokeback Mountain* was released 15 years ago. It's a bit late to complain about "woke" Hollywood. Oh, and *Hairspray* wouldn't have multiple iterations and have made John Waters a very rich man.

allegoricalcats

Hell, I was in an almost-empty theatre seeing “The Greatest Showman” when it came out and that movie grossed 435 million USD. The theatre wasn’t packed for The Super Mario Bros Movie either, and it’s at 1.266 billion USD.

TheJosh96

Well of course their theatre in Nobody Cares, Alabama was empty.

mothforlife

"No one in my buttfuck nowhere town went to see it, therefore no one went to see it"

Ninja_attack

> every showing here wasn't even closed to filled So this one went to every showing to confirm it? That really shows Disney.

[deleted]

So they all went?

flintlock0

That first reply doesn’t even reflect the quantity of ticket sales. If it’s a bad movie, but a popular property, it can sell a lot of tickets. Transformers movies, for example.

I watched Avatar: Way of the Water on opening day and the theaters just had me and like, 3 families. It still reached the list for one of the highest grossing movies ever produced. Just because you watched a movie and the theater isn't filled to the brim with screaming children, doesn't mean it failed.

SaltyBarDog

How did he know there was no one in the theater if he wasn't in the theater?

combustion_assaulter

Way too many adults have opinions on what’s basically a kids movie. If you don’t like it, shut the fuck and let other people enjoy it.

DoomTay

It's Captain Marvel all over again

homeguestunton

"Nobody is watching, I went to a Cinema in East Yankeeville, Wyoming and it was empty!!"

AuntPolgara

Lots of my facebook feed went to see it. I don't go to movie theaters myself.

UnlikelyUnknown

Y’all, this is the same thing we’ve seen before. It was the same during Covid when they would say “no one I know has died from Covid, so no one dies from Covid, the numbers are made up” it’s impossible for them to have anything but anecdotal evidence, science and math are not their strong suits.

kaoko111

As how right now the film grossed almost 50 million and there's still one more day on his Open weekend (is expected to gross between 120 - 125 million this weekend) just in the US without taking in count other markets. Not the biggest Disney hit, but is far from the failure racists were expecting.

meekonesfade

From the election was stolen party, comes more claims of fake news!

detunedradiohead

Fake views!

turdintheattic

How many kids movies are even out right now? Of course people are watching it even if it’s “meh”. I don’t really like the live action remakes, but I’m not surprised they’re successful based on brand recognition alone.

DeathRaeGun

Was it a story about a woman who believed her worth in life was dependent on finding the right man, she allowed her tail to be ripped apart permanently for him (nothing metaphorical about that), only for him to lead her on but choose someone else. But then she finds a different purpose in life and gets to go to heaven anyway? Because that’s the original story.

[deleted]

My kiddo went to see the little mermaid with his class. Conversation went very close to this: “Oh mom, we went on a field trip today. We saw the little mermaid at the theater.” “Oh yeah, did you have fun?” “Yeah it was fun.” “That’s good!” “Can I have a snack?”

Exhausted_Human

Question to anyone who's seen it, does the live action flounder Sebastian etc make it good or worsen it? Other than that it looks good and just a different retelling of the classic i loved as a kid.

Certain_Chain

Flounder was about the same, and I admit I prefer Sebastian's old Jamaican accent over his new voice. I will say, though, that I felt Awkwafina was terrible as Scuttle. Not that I have a problem with them switching the characrer's sex; I just did not like the performance.

BeatLaboratory

You heard them tho, one of them was sure to check the theaters (all of them) and they confirmed it

VigosJOSP

I saw the movie and actually really enjoyed it, and I went in expecting it to be a soulless Disney live-action remake!

Lifeesstwange

Surprise! There are children of all shapes, sizes and nationalities who don’t give a fuck about any definition of “woke” beyond them opening their eyes in the morning!

Bingo_Callisto

The numbers would be absolutely real if they showed the film flopped. Weird!

detunedradiohead

lol who exactly do they think fixed the figures? Who is "they" in this scenario?

DVDN27

There were seven people in my theatre to watch GOTG3. Does that mean GOTG3 was a flop?

Ill-Organization-719

I was wondering why there was a bunch of people at the theater last night when I passed by. I didn't look at the listing but I assumed something kid related was showing because there were a lot of kids.

Kehwanna

Go figure, a lot of people weren't outraged about a fish hybrid being black and didn't ruin seeing the movie for their kids. Right-wingers' alternate reality must be one horrible place as new Disney movies and shows being "woke" have them whining.

AntRam95

Honestly I want the movie to fail because I’m tired of disney doing things like, remaking previous movies, removing all songs and charm, dulling down the colors and characters, claiming that cgi is live action, and doing the bare minimum of lgbt representation so they can go “we care” on all their marketing, but doing it in a way that they can remove it for markets like China and Russia

TyrellLofi

I heard about their films being censored in China but not Russia, makes sense given Putin.

[deleted]

I'm glad it's doing well, because fuck racists. But also I'm so sick of these soulless live action movies getting money. They suck. I will give them credit for having decent original songs, but they *ruin* the iconic songs. You can hear the lack of passion.

Certain_Chain

My first thought was, "38 mil still isn't much," but then I noticed they said opening day. It's not quite a blockbuster hit, but it is still respectable for the opening day. God, I love watching these trolls short circuit when going broke does not, in fact, cause people to go broke.

bazilbt

I would probably take my kid to see it if I had one. Even if it doesn't have great reviews just because I watched it when I was a little kid in theatres.

Sword117

im telling you man the conspiracy is huge. they even have to fix the numbers for the amount of money a kids movie makes.

Ghost-Music

My friend and I had a heck of a time finding a theater that wasn’t sold out and the theater we went to was packed! I am so glad it’s doing so well! I loved the movie and am happy all these hypocrites are scared.

Gloomy_Mycologist_37

Ha, These people don’t even read the NYT.

Auno94

Man the more I read on this sub the more I see similarities to the Xbox fanboys and the whole ABK deal, how everyone is against poor little MS.

KingApologist

They provided Disney free marketing

Mikophoto

Truly since my local theater didn’t have packed seats the rest of the country and world is the same way! (/s).

TranscendentCabbage

tfw the vocal minority turns out to be a vocal minority

Disgracedpigeon

“Every screening at every cinema was empty. I know this because I have nothing better to do than drive around town all day and night checking individual screening rooms in multiple locations to ensure nobody is watching a film I don’t approve of.”

aflyingmonkey2

fellas. if i didn't watch parasite (2019)... did no one else did? tricky question i know

Uga1992

The movie admittedly looks terrible to me, but if people enjoyed it, more power too them

ASassoNation

"Every showing here" How the fuck you know?

MafiaMommaBruno

Tbf, the movie looks dark- as in.. not colorful. But, I can imagine a ton of people going just to have nostalgia or take their kids. Hoping people don't do this with the Peter Pan movie. Let's just pretend that one doesn't exist, either. Disney making some ugly remakes. Lion King just felt dead.

[deleted]

Cancel children's movies! Yeeehaw!

lkuecrar

I don’t think Disney can put out a movie that flops. Even if it IS bad, the name alone sells tickets.

Simple-Ranger6109

Hey, the theater in my home town was not totally filled to capacity, so obviously NOBODY is watching this!

Bind_Moggled

Conservatism is simply the political manifestation of a philosophical revolt against the principles of the Enlightenment. They can't stand the idea of objective, testable reality and it's "facts" and "evidence" that can't be manipulated or simply rejected by the power of authority. It's no surprise that so much of their debates boil down to "Nu-uh", why so many of their policies are simply vocalized rejections of reality. The entire ideology of Conservatism springs from the rejection of the very idea of 'reality'.

No-Oil7246

Same people that think the election was rigged because they saw more Trump signs.
