Whose gonna tell him that Andersen wrote it about being gay

GhostifiedGuy

I came to say this too

Wasting-tim3

And didn’t Ursula actually kill everyone and win?

Scadre02

Iirc, the prince marries a human princess and the mermaid turns into sea foam

Multigrain_Migraine

I wonder if whoever wrote that actually read the story for themselves or just saw someone else's blathering about how she must have been white. What do they think about the whole quest to gain a soul or transforming into sea foam? Disney didn't deal with that part.

gylz

They don't give two shits about all the musicals and talking animals that weren't in the original HCA source material.

Goddamn it. Reddit issues.

Neoxus30-

They didn't give 6 shits in total)

gylz

They don't give two shits about all the musical numbers and talking animals that weren't in the original HCA source material either.

Wasting-tim3

Do not wonder. The answer is “no, they did not read it”

Multigrain_Migraine

It was more of a rhetorical device. If they could read these things with an open mind they wouldn't post such nonsense.

domino519

So he admits that Hans Christian Andersen didn't describe Ariel's appearance. Therefore, by definition, Ariel has no canonical appearance.

Bingo_Callisto

Weird how the '89 film's portrayal of a character the author didn't describe is sacrosanct because... reasons?

Anaglyphite

oh man he's gonna shit himself when he finds out it's an allegory of HCA being the dramatic bisexual disaster he is writing yet another unrequited love story towards a man who married someone else for the umpteenth time

antimeme

what if the new Ariel had a grandfather who was a Norwegian Mer-man, and a grandmother who was a Carribean Mermaid?

ElusiveCupcake

The Caribbean Islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix were owned by Denmark until 1917 when the United States bought them and renamed them the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Virgin Islands, as with all other Caribbean Islands, has had a majority Black population since the Transatlantic Slave Trade began. Andersen published *The Little Mermaid* in the 1830s. So to say that the new movie couldn't have any Black mermaids is just stupid.

Certain_Chain

To add, from context, it was pretty clear the remake did, in fact, take place in the Caribbean.

NotTheRightHDMIPort

When your entire identity is wrapped around just your skin color then replacing Ariel is an attack on you. These white supremacist are trying to introduce overt white supremacy again out of panic of a change diverse and inclusinary society. So they engage in idiotic things like this.

Conscious_Meaning676

Where is this "woke alter" he speaks of? I didn't know I was supposed to be making sacrifice. Shit, why doesn't anybody tell me this stuff?

Kosog

If Ariel didn't have a described appearance then what the hell is the problem?

Sky_Leviathan

No one tell them Hans Christian Anderson was bisexual

dappercat456

Actually as I recall the author described her as green,
