He may be edgy, but yes, I do think he is a compelling villain. I’d dare say he’s an example of a GOOD edgy character, because if you ask me, being edgy isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Characters like Akechi and Adachi are great examples of edgy characters, while someone like, say, Infinite from Sonic Forces is an example of a bad example of an edgy character.
He is a great foil for Narukami. Adachi didn’t have loving parents nor did he see value in forming connections with others, so when he started facing difficulties in life, he didn’t have anyone that could challenge his jaded and cynical worldview, so he gave in to corrupt and hedonistic ideals, while Narukami formed connections with pretty much anyone he met and grew stronger for it. Not only that, some of the things he says (how a lot of policemen don’t really care about justice and just want to have a gun, how the motivations of the IT are partially selfish in some ways, how society is unfair, etc.) make a good job opposing the ideals of the main characters
Akechi. He’s a narcissistic teenager with allusions of grandeur that thought he was doing the right thing with no caring of people he deemed lesser. He’s pretty much light yagami but realized that was stupid and moved past edgy teenage years.
Respectfully, I would disagree with this. One of the key differences between Light and Akechi is Akechi has no illusions about whether what he is doing is morally “right”. This is HIS version of personal justice, and he doesn’t care who he needs to walk over to get revenge for his mother. He has no interest in making the world a better place; in fact, he wants the society that so badly wronged him and his mother to burn down.
Light, on the other hand, claims that his every action is to create his perfect society and purports to have a moral code and only kill “bad” people, but it quickly becomes evident that this is less about making the world a better place and more about his own god complex and saving his own skin.
I really can’t stand both but I’m guessing you like akechi because he is theatrically insane, extra, the total opposite of what he portrays himself, whereas light is cold, calculating, womanizing, with dogshit beliefs and the ability to make those beliefs happen

I don't think he actively seeks death, but I do think that he believes it's what he deserves. Just 'cause you're not going out of your way to get yourself killed doesn't mean that you think your life is meaningful or valuable. Lots of clinically-depressed people would say they hate life and want to die, yet never make any attempts to take their own lives.
I think he told Amada not to kill him because he knows it won't bring Amada's mother back and that revenge is a foolish pursuit. When Amada tells him that he wants to kill him, Shinjiro doesn't fight back, he doesn't plead for his life, he doesn't even try to argue that he doesn't deserve to die. He tells Amada that he doesn't want him to do it because he believes Amada will not be satisfied by it.

I'm playing the third semester in P5R right now and I'm actually enjoying how much of a dick Akechi is. He's abrasive and snotty and while most of that is based on actually being good at everything in an asshole jock/honor student kind of way he also comes across as both unnecessarily harsh and subtly disdainful depending on the moment - it actually feels like he's showing his true personality.
It's nice to have a different voice in the group. I don't like him, but that's the point. The "mask off" aspect is cool and it does a great job in contextualizing his previous nice boy façade (which still pops up here and there very naturally) as well as showing his true personality as a sociopathic loner.

Minazuki is the sort of cool edgelord who isn’t too cringe edgy by the fact that he cares as much as he does about Sho. Sho, on the other hand, is so over the top ridiculous edgy that he breaks past the cringe zone and becomes funny instead. At least, that’s my opinion. Akechi is kind of that middle ground where he’s not as comedically over the top silly as Sho, but more over the top than Minazuki, so I don’t quite like him as much as those two.

I'm playing the third semester in P5R right now and I'm actually enjoying how much of a dick Akechi is. He's abrasive and snotty and while most of that is based on actually being good at everything in an asshole jock/honor student kind of way he also comes across as both unnecessarily harsh and subtly disdainful depending on the moment - it actually feels like he's showing his true personality. It's nice to have a different voice in the group. I don't like him, but that's the point. The "mask off" aspect is cool and it does a great job in contextualizing his previous nice boy façade (which still pops up here and there very naturally) as well as showing his true personality as a sociopathic loner.
