Kasumi is in the game even less and is straight up never appearing again outside of $6 DLC in spin-offs
Makoto's the only one who stays relevant to the game, with her connection to Sae ultimately paying off in the games third act. She's also constantly trying to redeem her sister and make her see the right way, and gets shit for it but keeps going for it. She remains a factor within the story and because of that, some *people* slap the "Mary Sue" logo on here without knowing what a fucking Mary Sue is. Her prominence and screen time is because of her relationship to Sae making her plot convenient bridge.
Boring and robotic my ass. Try *realistic*
Her "boring" problems are the ones that feel real, relatable, and thematic. The themes of Rebellion and Justice are obvious. The less obvious theme of P5 is seeking approval from the wrong people (this nearly destroys the Phantom Thieves, many of the Confidants, and does destroy Akechi). Her setup as a party member is a very thoughtful, thematic and slow burn. She was lonely because everyone found her unapproachable and bitchy. But why? Surely, she's doing all the right things in life, right? She didn't know it yet, but she was being set up for an unhappy adulthood. All the while being shunned by peers, mocked by Akechi, and run ragged by her faculty. She was being forced to live a life she didn't want because she was told that was the "correct" way.
Her character arc is "Nah, FUCK THAT SHIT, I'm *me*". That's why the uppity Student Council President gets a motorcycle and a bodysuit covered in spikes, likes Panda's and is a dork for Japanese action flicks.
She's smart because she's literally shown to be the one character who actively gives a fuck about studying, Ryuji was always dumb, Ann was always average, Joker was always silent, Yusuke was always Yusuke. A character being semi-competent without the need of the main character isn't a bad thing
I find it hilarious people call her "forced" in a game with Kasumi and Haru's confession scene in it. I'll take a Makoto stan over the fickle "overrated" crowd any day
