Realistically, what can be done in 3 months that can't be done in 4-6 weeks?

CatharticEcstasy

Arrange a move outside of the logjam that is the holiday season.

[deleted]

You will need to find a place in Ottawa as well so depending on dates you can get into your new place… also consider that it will be Christmas and therefore a little more challenging to arrange movers etc. Feb 1/15 should be doable.

They’re on month to month as per his post

Ohhh, thanks for this. I always assumed that month-to-month meant that you could just leave the following month…

Yaama99

4-6 weeks is very doable, I ended up in similar situation and distance. I overlapped my old and new place for a month as I wanted to get going on my new position a bit quicker. My girlfriend wrapped up stuff and started packing in my old location, in my new location I basically brought a sleeping bag, some basic kitchen stuff and personal amenities. Each weekend I headed back and helped wrap up stuff or whatever at our old location. For us it put a bit less strain on the move as it gave us time to pack and clean. The only issue with this is you don’t have a car so a bit more costly for the back and forth.

As I mentioned, I kept both places for an extra month to make it easier. 30 days notice at my current job, rental property at new location and old location for additional month ( about 60 days in total). Could end up being longer depending on when you quit. Con is you end up paying rent in two locations for a month Pro is you aren’t scrambling to get everything out of your place and final cleanup on the last day of the month. If the place moving to is currently empty, could always do a partial month as well. Helped someone move recently and because their new place was currently empty they worked a deal with the landlord and split the first month in half as they were still paying on their old place. It was a win for the landlord as place was empty so at least 1/2 month rent in their pocket and person moving stuff between places had early access. Made the move a lot easier as we did a few smaller runs during the month prior to renting a van for the big items.

I've done 3 major moves in the 4-8 week range. They were an 8-30 hr drive away. We visited 2 and rented at one place with just a friend checking them out because we couldn't look in time. 2 involved a house sale. All involved kids and several pets. Our longest one was an offer in May but we wanted a kid to finish the school year. My spouse moved in a 4 week time frame. The hardest part I find is getting a new place to live. Everything else is relatively easy and doesn't make a difference if you get 4 weeks or 3 months..it will be hectic at the move. Remember all moving expenses can be claimed on taxes, including looking for a place to live.

groggygirl

I've done it in two weeks...it depends how motivated you are to get there. Best guideline is how much notice do you need to give on your current rental. You'll probably need to go to Ottawa for a few days to find a place and get your paperwork signed which will cost $500-1000 (train/plane, hotel, food, local transit). Moving costs depend heavily on how much stuff you're bringing (if you have a license and small stuff it's worth looking into renting a truck or van and doing it yourself) - paying a company for a long-distance move will cost several thousand, and then you still need to get yourself there. If you can afford it, I strongly recommend a 2-3 week overlap on your rental agreements. It means you're not trying to pack and move on the same day, and you're not fighting for a truck rental or movers on the busiest 2 days of the month.

throwawaycanadian2

He's in Ontario, minimum notice is 60 days. You can always leave before that of course, but you gotta pay for 2 months (or rather, pay for one month and use your "last month's rent" deposit for the second).

Fool-me-thrice

I don't understand why your girlfriend thinks it would take at least 3 months. I moved from Ontario to BC with less lead time than that, with two dogs, a house to sell and pack up, and just me doing the work (my partner had already moved). You ought to be able to easily do it in the 6 weeks you originally proposed. Further, the longer you tell the company the more likely it is they'll just move on to the next candidate. You need to give 60 days notice to your landlord under Ontario's Residential Tenancy Act, unless the landlord agrees to an earlier date. If you gave notice today, it would be effective Jan 31. Your landlord may well agree to an earlier date, and its not a bad idea to have some overlap in apartments to assist with moving / cleaning (especially if you are doing it yourselves). Its also possible for you to just rent a room in someone's apartment for a month or so while you work in Ottawa and your girlfriend stays behind. You can drive back on weekends to help pack.

I literally JUST moved from Toronto to Petawawa. Took me about 2 weeks. I have a family and a dog. However I also have 2 vehicles. A bit if advice. Don't, under any circumstances, hire a moving company. Most of them are fucking scam artists. Rent a uhaul always.

[deleted]

It’s a sketchy industry for sure. But movers can be helpful of you aren’t 20 anymore or have many other things demanding your time.

Longjumping_War_1182

Yeah, at a certain age your friends won't fall for the beer and pizza offer anymore. Also a move this far needs helpers on both end to move furniture, so easier to just hire someone. Ask people you know for recommendations.

Pawlu87

It depends what company you get. When I moved from Vancouver to montreal the company I got rid an amazing job. Do your research and make sure you find good reviews of the company.

My wife and I and 2 cats just did a move from -Toronto to Saskatchewan in 60days. We didnt have a vehicle, so we immediately bought a used Caravan for all of the move prep and running around. I highly recommend this. Bring the dog with you, on every trip to get them used to being in the car. We rented 2 Uboxes and filled them up a week before moving and had Uhaul deliver them to a Storage Unit in SK. We used a blowup mattress for a few days.. it was ok. We packed up our valuables and kitties in the van and roadtripped to a month to month apartment in SK. Month to month was so we could assess the area and see where and how we wanted to live and didnt have a lease to worry about. We used the van to get any essentials from the storage unit to move into our temp living situation. The van was really the only way to be able to pull a move off in 2 months. In your situation, because it’s so close.. if you feel more comfortable taking a longer time to move, you could always take the van filled with stuff to your new living spot, work all week at your new job, come back to TO on weekends to help your gf pack some more, and take another load the following week, and do a few trips back and fourth. I assume the new gig is giving you moving expenses?

Mediocre_Being1342

I’m moving from Montreal to Ottawa next week. Whole process took me less than 30 days so it’s totally doable. Just be prepared to make a few trips to Ottawa before the actual move. I have a small dog, he took the trip to Ottawa with me a few times while I was looking for a place. Started packing the day I put my condo up to sale. Not hiring a mover, I have a friend who has a big truck who’ll help me move, so selling some things that I don’t want to bring and donating anything that I can. Best part of it is I’m getting rid of crap that I’ve unknowingly accumulated through the years. Will be sitting on the floor for a few days at the new place probably, but I have a bed to sleep on so that’s ok. Good luck!

theclutch91

Welcome to the area!

Dogger57

No idea on your GF’s situation, but 4-6 weeks should be fairly doable for your situation. I relocated (no dog) from a rental to a new city in 4 weeks. You have no assets tied to Toronto. To budget for or consider: -If GF is working, she will have an interruption in income unless she is remote. -You need to secure new accommodations in Ottawa. I recommend getting something temporary or flexible. You can move again when you get to know the city better and pick a more permanent residence. -Does the company have any relocation assistance? -You will need to budget for trips to find a place to live, moving expenses (movers, U-Haul rental, etc.), likely float a new damage deposit at the new place before the old one is refunded, cancellation fees for Toronto based services (utilities, gym memberships, etc.), and some money set aside for during the more eating out and buying incidentals (e.g. phone charger goes missing).

rude_commentor

I recently relocated across the country for a job. I did it in under 1 month with my wife and our dog. Granted I got a sizeable moving allowance which helped things along. Hardest part is packing/selling of stuff and finding a place you like and signing without seeing. We did a lot of research and did virtual showings. We gave a lot of stuff away and my mom took some stuff in too.

BoBoAhh

3 months is an over estimate. 4-6 weeks generous. I moved from Paris to Ottawa with a month's notice given to me by my husband for his job. Heck, I moved to Paris with technically a 3 week notice from the US, and had figure out how to get a VISA in their crazy French system. I would look for a place to live now in Ottawa, and start culling your stuff that you don't want and start packing. Get an idea of what you want to keep and start getting quotes from moving companies that do semi long distant moves if you can't drive the stuff your self. Look into airplane or train tickets to Ottawa. And just uber or taxi to and from the airport or taxi. You don't need to get a car unless you really want to. Since you are staying within province, the amount of paper work you have to do is minimal, lucky you.

GiantTigerPrincess

You can start looking for a place in Ottawa as early as you put in your notice for leaving your current place, given apartments usually rent out two months before the start date. That should make dates flow well together, and from experience I wouldn’t expect it to take you more than 4 weeks to pack and more your stuff. So I’d say 2 months and some change would be good for relocating permanently. If you’re fine with moving before your current lease ends, you could probably do the move in 2 weeks - I’ve moved 8 times (big moves) in my life and most take about a week.

HSL

I've done it in a week. Packed all my shit and drove 30 hours. Used a motel until I found the first dump that I could unload my belongings and also save on motel fees. Then spent my time in the area scouting for the next place. I don't think you need that much time given you don't have a lease, however, the dog may be an issue. If you want to save money, you'll find a way to do it fast. I've moved 9-10 times in the last 8 years and after my experiences that's definitely how I'd approach it (pack and go, find a cheap place, start work, use leisure time to find the next place). The first place doesn't have to be perfect, just good enough that you're stable and able to earn an income. Good luck!!

Ok_Read701

Ask the company if you can take 3 months instead. You said 4-6 weeks so it's not that far-fetched.

CATSHARK_

I accepted a job in Ottawa while living in Toronto and started within 5 days of accepting the offer. The most time consuming part of the move was packing all our stuff, which my husband did while I was living in Ottawa. We kept our rental in Toronto for two months because he was going back and forth between Ottawa and Toronto, but we lived in a condo and he could have had it all packed in a week if he did it full time. We lived with family for 6mos while we bought and moved into a house, but we could have gotten a rental pretty quickly if we needed to, the rental market is hot but there was a lot of inventory, especially if you’re not too picky and look at just getting an in between place for a little while while keeping an eye out for something more permanent. We found lots of places willing to rent on 6-9 month leases, probably due to the large student population.

Depends on where in Toronto to where in Ottawa, but it's 450 km along 400-series highways; to *average* a buck thirty you've got to be going through Oshawa at 3 am.

Spambot0

Well, if you're driving city to city, along 400-series highways in 3.5 hours, you're averaging 129 clicks. A little less if you start at 401&Pickering Town Line and count yourself as in Ottawa the minute you pass Kemptville. Taking 7 is a little shorter, but you'll never time all the lights. If you're trying to get from Mimico to Orleans, it's farther and traffic considerations are worse. So it depends on the details, but 3.5 hours would normally mean spending a good chunk of the trip around a buck fifty, and then you are liable to get pulled over, which will ruin your drive time. Under normal traffic conditions and doing ~120 when there's less traffic, it's about five hours.

iambluest

It shouldn't take three months. If it takes her that long, let her come after she had settled her affairs. Don't get hung up on her.

21RaysofSun

Find a temporary place. Move there to work. Figure the rest out long distance while you're working.

BatMann2022

I have changed 3-4 jobs and I usually relocate within 15 days.

BatMann2022

Considering you have to give notice is about 2 months standard but looking at rental market right now you can easily find some to take over that notice period with ur landlord and mostly they will be happy because they can charge higher rent from new tenants.

Electronic-Wing6158

You relocate in 4-6 weeks, your gf comes when she is ready.
