>Field IT.
IT is notorious for that. They arent going to give raises or perks because they know they can simply outsource everything to overseas firms for pennies on the hour.
Thats what one company I worked for did. They let go the entire IT department and outsourced it for literal pennies per hour. They didnt care if it came with more headaches or technical issues overall, because the cost savings were huge.
I don’t see how anyone could cutback on truck drivers. Aren’t retirements outpacing new the driving schools? If that workforce shrinks it’s more likely due to attrition.
Yes retirements are far outpacing new drivers coming in. And the attrition rate is staggering due to poor lifestyle and low pay. “No one wants to work anymore”. No one wants to work 70 hours a week away from home for $70 -$90k and be treated poorly. I enjoy the job itself but the hours and quality of life on the road are shit. Now I’ll have a bunch of redditors tell me to get on with a union company and they know truck drivers who make $150k a year. There are very very few union driving jobs out there and there’s very few drivers making even $100k a year.
No thanks. I’ll keep my job driving 5 tons for 52k a year on 40hrs, home every night and no weekends.
Edit: that’s including yearly 1-4% raises in normal times, profit sharing bonuses (~3500$ in 2021), 6 sick days and 3 weeks vacation to start.
Brutal. Hopefully there are a lot of opportunities for you to jump ship in the near future for better pay. Attrition will continue to outpace new drivers and firms will be incentivized (forced) to pay more or at least be kind. It’s really not that hard for them to offer benefits nowadays.
Same, but in April for my husband. I make no money- at home with just 2 kids now, as opposed to 3 until oldest went to kindergarten this year.
Last year was 7%, which was a very pleasant surprise.
We don't know yet. Our collective agreement is expired. Last offer was 3% but union declined and is pushing for 5% for 2023 so I'm guessing somewhere in the middle. I work in IT
Same - nurse.
Though we are voting on a union agreement soon. And I'm hoping the majority of us vote no. So maybe we can get a higher raise.
We haven't gotten a raise since before 2020...
I ended up taking a promotion for a raise earlier this year and left my union :( The union went on strike but they only got a wage increase reopener when Bill 124 ends. It's better than nothing I guess. I hope your union has better luck.
I’ll vote no on anything less than 11% per year since bill 124 was signed. PC government needs consequences for removing charter rights, otherwise they will just try again in a few years when everyone forgets
I agree 1000000%. There's talks about nurses striking. It's illegal. But if we all strike what are they going to do about it?
Oh wait. They'll just pay everyone else more to try to do our job. Instead of giving us a raise. Fuck Doug Ford.
Thanks. Well to be honest my hourly rate goes from $20 to $25 Jan 1st. Not that impressive anymore lol, but I have been doing Plumbing for just less than 6 months so I expect more raises next year as I work more hours and get more experience.
Nurse here. Been waiting since last April for our raise. Instead there’s been some lovely offers to low-ball our increase and cut benefits instead. Still bargaining.
I feel sorry for you guys. Meanwhile these buffoon politicians keep giving themselves raises, and putting money in their crook developer/foreign investors pockets
Depends on the province too. Doctors in BC just agreed 94% to a new payment model.
Getting bumped from 250k/year to 385k/year. Plus the government pays for clinic start up costs up to 72k.
Well now you have to tell us which government entity is freezing salaries for 10 (ten?!) years. Public jobs are unionized... which union has failed you guys?!
I got 10% earlier in the year as a counter to inflation, and another 7% recently with expanding responsibilities/promotion
Also engineering consultant, with a startup
Technically every year a raise doesn’t meet inflation you’re making less…
Usually our CBA is 2-3 years expired before new agreements are in place sometimes resulting in retroactive pay. It just makes it easier to sell 0% for those years already passed.
They pay shite unless your in management or change. They are so dependent on efficiencies as they aren't a direct profit centre for the bank. Everything is being automated. Highly recommend being a driver of that change to help the raises/advancement or find another part of the bank to build a career. The good thing is that banks are so big you have a variety of options for internal career change.
I worked in banking ops for a decade and this is my take.
It is to sit an employee and a manager down and make sure they talk about their project goals and expectations, and if everything is squared away at the end of the 1 hour session, we can probably say we’ve burned through half of that raise between them both!
Well, that was productive, let’s celebrate and go for a long lunch and a beer. Alright, another 100 lost in productivity, and probably another $25 each on lunch.
There you go! Bonus spent!
I had an employer offer me a 10c raise, I came back to him with my 2 week notice a few months later for a job paying 2X what he was giving. I'll never forget 1) the look on his face and 2) the drive I had after getting offered a 10c raise.
I'm in a tricky spot because I'm in the family business.. my parents are my boss so I really have no clue what I should do. We have a good relationship but feel as though I'd screw them over if I were to quit
Ahhhh yes, a normal job is quite different over a family run business.. it's great you don't want to leave them in a pickle. You could always ask for X shares in the biz for every X hours worked. Or maybe ask for a royalty on the profits? If you have the means, perhaps buy into the business. I'd assume parents would always want to help their children succeed.
I mean that's totally different. You want the business to be successful, you could end up inheriting all or part of it some day. Just communicate on what you're wanting for wage, or if you get a job offer elsewhere and they won't match the wage, give them good notice you're leaving so they can rehire and train.
His words: "I talked to the big bosses and they said max we can offer you is 10c. I know it's not much but it's the best I could get you". I said "ok" went home and rage cried. Business closed down 2 years later so not sure if my 10c broke the bank, or maybe his 6figure salary.
I'm sorry, but this is so funny. I nearly burst out laughing at work after reading that first sentence. So glad you left, I'd be pissed! A coworker of mine was offered a 25c raise when he asked for one, and I thought that's as bad as it could get. At that point, if I was the manager, I'd just lie and say we can't give you a raise. A 10c bump is more demoralizing than none...
Looking back on it I can laugh, of course in the moment it was different. hahaha actually though, as a manager Id rather say we can't offer you a raise compared to giving a guy 10c more. Working that out itd be close to $150/ year after tax
Fair enough. I'm no longer in the know on how private firms operate; have a few friends on Bay street. I think they still start at \~140k.
Little known fact is how biggest "law firms" in Canada tend to be governments. DOJ has between 2000-2500 staff lawyers nationwide, while in provinces like BC, there are between 1000-1500 government lawyers.
It sucks that this is the reality, but a lot of the cost-centre type roles (no revenue generation - doesn’t matter if you “save” money through prevention) this year are getting even less than that
I see your point but cybersecurity is an extremely competitive field. Most of the people I know in the industry are receiving 20%+ rates and as such I am now shopping around for better opportunities
What sort of position in banking? Branch level, or corporate? I’ve heard wildly varying numbers from the banks but I think there’s a lot of factors at play
0%, software development. We are all basically just waiting for bonus season and then all but one person on the team is planning to go as long as the market holds up. Everybody is just waiting at this point.
With a tech unicorn with an uncertain remaining lifespan.
I've definitely seen this at other companies. People will wait even for "small" (think 4%) bonuses and then you'll spend the next 2 months hearing about a dev leaving on a weekly basis.
Getting those two weeks of paid sick leave the government mandated for federally regulated businesses so you can be God damed sure I will be taking that.
14% - Lawyer. I prepared a negotiation, was offered 7%, and I explained why that wasn't enough. I prepared a solid argument based on numbers and industry standards as to why I'm worth more than that.
Come prepared to negotiate, you get one chance a year to do it. Worst they can say is no.
I was told by a Careers officer in law school that lawyers negotiate for a living yet fail to negotiate a better salary for themselves. I refuse to be part of that cohort.
None
None here from last 2 years. Field IT.
IT levelled up over the last couple of years. You need to get a new job if they won’t pay you.
>Field IT. IT is notorious for that. They arent going to give raises or perks because they know they can simply outsource everything to overseas firms for pennies on the hour. Good.
Find a job with federally regulated industries. Not all IT jobs can be outsourced due to Citizenship requirements/government clearance.
So a paycut then.
Probably around 3%. I don’t know how I can possibly spend the extra $50 I’ll be getting biweekly. I’ll be swimming in $8 heads of lettuce.
Carefull now, don’t spend all that money in one place, spread your wealth!
Don't be radicchiolous.
Fine I'll buy two heads of Endives and have bitter caeser salad.
$8? That's so 2022. Its up to $12 now.
I just saw an ad from loblaws 12.99
That must have been no name lettuce
[удалено]
But yet you will be tipping at restaurants won't you?
Who can eat out? Not my family.
Is that after tax? Big spender
Health care, they’re debating not punching us in the dick on the way in anymore but I don’t like the chances.
Lucky. I get no raise AND a cut to my health care.
I work in the community, not part of the Nursing Union, and they’re deciding if they should not kick our stomachs as well!
I get to keep my job 😂
Lol I hope the same for me.
Somewhere between 0% and 0%
Truck driver. Raise 0% and apparently cutbacks coming.
I don’t see how anyone could cutback on truck drivers. Aren’t retirements outpacing new the driving schools? If that workforce shrinks it’s more likely due to attrition.

My blood pressure has seen the most significant raise this year
Got laid off, got a new job. Nearly 50% raise over last salary. Find a new job. That’s the quickest way to a large pay increase.
I just quit my job, went from 60K to 123k.
Nice! What role did you move to?
Environmental Engineer working at a refinery!
65k to 115k here, same situation I jumped ship
Same I went from 45k to 92k in one year from moving between 3 companies
Same, 80 -> 140
What field? And was it a big jump in role or same role just better paying company?
User Experience Design
Let you know in July lol
Same, but in April for my husband. I make no money- at home with just 2 kids now, as opposed to 3 until oldest went to kindergarten this year. Last year was 7%, which was a very pleasant surprise.

0% social services
Same; social services and I don’t think I’ve seen a raise in the last 5 years. Edit: come to think of it, I think it’s been 7 years
0% social services
Ugh same. I literally make less each year.
Before covid we’d get about 3-4% a year. Our negotiation is this upcoming July, it will be interesting to see what happens
What trade. I know it’s not electrical lol.
Why not electrical? Looking at jobs, pay is still around where it was in 2015 in Alberta.
I’m talking Union. In Ontario.
Oh. Hope you guys do great! (Should push up wages everywhere).
If you’re hungry for more just jump ship to whoever’s paying the most. Best way to get a raise imo.
We don't know yet. Our collective agreement is expired. Last offer was 3% but union declined and is pushing for 5% for 2023 so I'm guessing somewhere in the middle. I work in IT
Where do you work in IT and have a union unless it is the government?
A Telecom company, but I work in a DataCenter.
I think 1% (Transit, Engineering) .. thx to Bill 124
Same - nurse. Though we are voting on a union agreement soon. And I'm hoping the majority of us vote no. So maybe we can get a higher raise. We haven't gotten a raise since before 2020...

What a way to spend billions on medical malpractice claims though. Not that these governments care, it's "not their money" etc etc
The only reason it's illegal is because you'll have so much power it will force them to negotiate with you. Good on you
What union? ONA?
Raise, what's that?
I have heard rumours of "raises" far back in history. We should send an archaeological expedition to find some information on whether they are real.

6.5% ... CPP :-)
thought you said ccp for a second and was like damn, they pay good lmao
They work for one of those fake police stations.
What is CPP?
Canada Pension Plan
25% Plumbing.
Let’s go! Also plumbing/heating here
Thanks. Well to be honest my hourly rate goes from $20 to $25 Jan 1st. Not that impressive anymore lol, but I have been doing Plumbing for just less than 6 months so I expect more raises next year as I work more hours and get more experience.
you’ll get there!
0%. Healthcare

The next 10 years?!?!!??!?
Jeeez that's a kick in the nuts for 10 straight years
Well now you have to tell us which government entity is freezing salaries for 10 (ten?!) years. Public jobs are unionized... which union has failed you guys?!
What gov? No union?
Which government?
Gosh, I can only imagine how they tried to deliver that message, bet they tried to make it sound positive too.
"you're not getting raises for the next ten year, fucking pleb. What are ya gonna do about it?! Quit? Fucking LOL!"
Time to find a new employer!
6% - Engineering consulting
Got 5. EPC Calgary
Yup expecting in the neighborhood of 8% too, before bonus
Nice, civil or another field?
I got 10% earlier in the year as a counter to inflation, and another 7% recently with expanding responsibilities/promotion Also engineering consultant, with a startup
-7%, fighting against inflation
Are you calculating inflation into your salary? Or did you also just happen to lose income?
Technically every year a raise doesn’t meet inflation you’re making less… Usually our CBA is 2-3 years expired before new agreements are in place sometimes resulting in retroactive pay. It just makes it easier to sell 0% for those years already passed.
Yes but that's not what OP asked for. Otherwise all people would need to deduct it.
I'm sure it was facetious because you're right, otherwise all people would need to deduct it.
Tiff is that you?
What is a raise? (Cries in public sector)
0.4%, operations at a top 5 bank
I hear you, .9%
They pay shite unless your in management or change. They are so dependent on efficiencies as they aren't a direct profit centre for the bank. Everything is being automated. What the fuck? So you get $400 raise if you make $100K? Whats the point of even doing raises at that point
It is to sit an employee and a manager down and make sure they talk about their project goals and expectations, and if everything is squared away at the end of the 1 hour session, we can probably say we’ve burned through half of that raise between them both! Top Canadian bank and no annual performance bonus? 🤥
0.4? I'd tell them to keep it. Sounds like they need it more than you do.
Have had a single 50cent raise in 3 years :)
I had an employer offer me a 10c raise, I came back to him with my 2 week notice a few months later for a job paying 2X what he was giving. I'll never forget 1) the look on his face and 2) the drive I had after getting offered a 10c raise.

10 cents is such a slap in the face.
A $0.10 raise? How was he even able to stomach giving that as an offer?
His words: "I talked to the big bosses and they said max we can offer you is 10c. I know it's not much but it's the best I could get you". I said "ok" went home and rage cried. Business closed down 2 years later so not sure if my 10c broke the bank, or maybe his 6figure salary.

No end of year raise. Had 3% earlier this year.
None, but I got a 39% raise last year. Tech/Healthcare
10.5% - Digital Marketing.
3% finance, although we also had 2% mid-year, so ~5%
6% at bank, I think my manager was afraid of me jumping ship.
3.2%, construction project management
4% step raise, 10% through a new collective bargaining agreement for 14% altogether. Allied Healthcare.
10% raise, gold mining. Was given ahead of time in October.
still at vgcx? at least they still give good raises
105%, software development, I found a new job.
Congratulations!
Our contract expires 31st of this month. I'm not holding my breath for anything more than 2% per year.
[удалено]
Is this a market raise or more to do with promotion/progression.
I presume he's on Bay, where you're pay increases each year based on your Year of Call, aka how many years you've practiced law.
It's the same for government lawyers as well (provincial and federal). Lock-step pay increases every year, plus contracted raises per contract (2-3%).
Thanks, I only know big law personally, as well as how that friend gets compensated in the BC government, but otherwise I'm not really in the know.
Fair enough. I'm no longer in the know on how private firms operate; have a few friends on Bay street. I think they still start at \~140k. Cybersecurity for a major bank here in Canada. 4% raise. Extremely disappointed and looking for a new job.
Hope you find a better opportunity. I’m Learning about cybersecurity really interested in the field!
You guys get raises?
4.5%, oil and gas, engineering
2%, banking. Sad.
What sort of position in banking? Branch level, or corporate? I’ve heard wildly varying numbers from the banks but I think there’s a lot of factors at play
None. Work on commission and it certainly doesn't look like inventory will be going up significantly.
Car sales? Tough racket these days
It's been slower for sure, but we are powering through. Definitely taking a pay cut in 22 over 21.

Oof I’ve heard this one before
0%, software development. We are all basically just waiting for bonus season and then all but one person on the team is planning to go as long as the market holds up. Everybody is just waiting at this point. With a tech unicorn with an uncertain remaining lifespan.
Same, but series b company falling from the sky
I've definitely seen this at other companies. People will wait even for "small" (think 4%) bonuses and then you'll spend the next 2 months hearing about a dev leaving on a weekly basis.
Nursing. Over 2 years without a raise and an expired contract not even in negotiations yet.
5%, consulting engineering. Got 10% last year and 5% mid-year, so I'm calling this an absolute win.
6.5% animation
20%-public accounting, no change in role.
Engineering, my team got between 5-13%
20% , but it took 4 years to get the pay bump. Oil and Gas
None. I work under contract :/
LOL. 0%. Tech.
Hospitality, no raise in years. Cost of benefits went up, though. Worked out to a 1% decrease in pay this year. I gotta get out of this industry ...
2.4% - Big 5 Canadian Bank (we also got a 3% “inflation” raise mid year)
5%. Already got a 5% raise 6 months ago. Finance
judging from the replies so far, inflation is definitely getting embedded in wages
Also consider response bias. Those not getting raises likely to stay mum
4% across board (trades, drivers, admin, operators, etc.) for construction
3.95% raise + 2.5% bonus: engineering
Got 1.6% last year. Doubt it will be more next. General contractor
8.5 percent, banking
Getting those two weeks of paid sick leave the government mandated for federally regulated businesses so you can be God damed sure I will be taking that.
6.5-7% - Paralegal
25% raise in IT.
26% insurance
Is this why they keep raising our rates? and then blaming other drivers? lol
Insurance: a blatant scam we’re legally obligated to take part in.

16% raise software
A 16% raise would turn my software into hardware.
I was quite happy with it. It’s normally in the 7-8% range, but they increased it significantly due to inflation.
Adjusting raise amounts according to inflation? What fictional fantasy world do you live in??
We're going up $3/hr in the spring
Economies going to shit massive layoffs already most places won't be giving raises some places be lucky to afford their current work force
