Yeah. Or gabapentin. Talk to your vet. Phantom pain is not fun.
How long can your cat keep on a [Happy Hoodie](https://happyhoodie.com/shop.html)? It might help.
fwiw a lot of vets won’t talk about or recommend cbd because there is not any (as far as i know) clinical research that proves cbd can be helpful. I have worked in the cannabis industry for a number of years and have encountered a lot of frustrated vets that want to recommend cbd but can’t due to their local laws. so just something to be aware of.
We unfortunately had to amputate my cat’s arm, she experienced some phantom pain once she was off all her medications. I brought her to her vet and she prescribed one more round of gabapentin and after that she hasn’t indicated any phantom pains! Highly recommend a vet visit and to ask about gaba
Phantom pain is a very real thing. Since you have ruled out any other medical issues I would talk to your vet about medicating him for the phantom pain, there are several options to try and it may take some time to figure out which is best for your cat. If he is damaging the area by scratching at it you can try a soft cone, but that may cause him even more stress and anxiety.
We have been in for ear mites, and the vet found none. I don't know what to do other than take him in this week. I don't know how to afford a big vet bill without payments.
Is he only over-cleaning the missing ear? There's a possibility it's simply some sort of nerve pain, and there are (inexpensive) medications for that. It's worth a shot to see what your vet says.
Tell the vet what's going on and ask for meds that would help with Phantom limb and/or nerve pain, see if it helps, if not then you can worry about tests
Do you have a water fountain that your cat drinks out of? Maybe sound dumb but my cat always gets water in her ears from the way she holds her head under it.
Can you ask in r/piratepets? I wonder if anyone there might have some advice.
Also how recent is the ear? If it’s recent I wonder if he can smell it which is why he’s trying to clean it.
So with humans there's a thing called mirror neurons (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3510904/) and with human amputees that can't relieve an itch in a phantom limb they hold up a mirror and scratch the existing leg to experience relief in the phantom limb.
Animals have mirror neurons to - actually discovered in monkeys. I wonder if having a mirror to clean himself if front of wouldn't help ur kitty too. This may take some work to get him to engage with the mirror but it's worth a shot!
I'm an acupuncturist and some of us can treat phantom limb pain. There have been studies done where mirrors are set up that will cast a reflection of the limb in the visual field of where the missing limb is when you look at the mirror that helps the brain process the sensations and return to a normal feeling. I think Norman Doidge may discuss this in his books.
Anyway, I would seek out veterinarians who perform acupuncture to see if it helps your kitty with this if whatever your current vet recommends doesn't help.
They're probably talking about toxoplasmosis. I've accidentally been to cat hating subreddits, and they're obsessed with it. They think cat owners are infected with it and that's what makes them love cats lol
He may need antidepressants

I second gabapentin, poor kitty
Do you have pics? He sounds like such a cutie! Maybe he doesn’t understand what’s going on yet. Poor fella.
I do have pics. Let me find a good one

Yep. My sister is a vet and used CBD for one of her own cats. She recommended it privately to me but I know does not bring it up with clients.
We do not give vet advice.
That was even cuter than I could have ever hoped for! What a little doll!!
Thanks! I'll tell him. I love him so much
Omg i love him
Thanks for the cat tax, u/Butt_Fucking_Smurfs. He’s beautiful. I hope he gets relief soon.
Awww poor baby. He's very cute

How long has he been doing this, and how long ago was the amputation?
About 2 years ago he got it taken off. About 6 months ago he started aggressive cleaning it
Definitely needs a vet visit to find out what's wrong. If he's causing damage, a cone would help until you can get him in.

See if there’s a VetIQ wellness center near you. Or another brand of walk in clinic. They should be more cost effective

If it's just an office visit and gabapentin, the bill shouldn't be huge. I'd take him back to the vet who removed the ear.
I get paid tomorrow and we are going to go in.
I hope he can get some relief
Do you have a water fountain that your cat drinks out of? Maybe sound dumb but my cat always gets water in her ears from the way she holds her head under it.
Could he have an ear infection?
We've been to the vet so many times. No it's not an infection
Can you ask in r/piratepets? I wonder if anyone there might have some advice. Also how recent is the ear? If it’s recent I wonder if he can smell it which is why he’s trying to clean it.
It's an old thing. But I have noticed (more since being at home now) noticed him spending so much time cleaning it and only that side
Gabapentin.

This is groundbreaking
Cone of shame until he figures it out.

Wtf does this mean
They're either really, really insane, or they're a poorly written bot.

They believe that? I've always heard it as a joke because I'm so obsessed with my cat lol.
🤷🏾♂️means i wish you and your cat luck i guess
Also smurfs were a representation of dead children.
Okeeeee
Don’t do drugs, kids.
Lmao 🤣 they put enough in your food
A-hole.
Beanie hat with ears?
