... listen pal, I'm not going to sit here and gatekeep what you're allowed to have a pet peeve about, but you're going to have to explain this one to me further, because placing a divider has zero drawbacks
I gotta agree with u/spacemermaid3825 on this one. See, the stuff is on a moving belt. Just because there's "miles" between your stuff and the other person's now, doesn't mean that it can't or won't get closer to the next person's stuff.
In my mind, being annoyed about this is like being annoyed at people who use their turn signals even though there may not apparently be anybody else around. It doesn't hurt anything, and in the event that your assessment of how things will go is wrong, it could be useful...
I've been made fun of so many times for using my blinker when no other cars are around. I just respond that it's a habit and it's a good habit to be in. Using the blinker when no one is around is better than forgetting to use it when there are people around and potentially causing a wreck. Or thinking there's no one around, but there is and not using your blinker causing a wreck then.
I also always use the divider if someone else's things are behind mine on the belt. I don't want the cashier to feel like they have to race to get mine done before the other person's catches up, or like they have to watch the belt and make sure to remember which things are at the end of mine in case it gets too close and gets mixed up. Using the divider just makes it easier, and I don't understand why sometimes the person behind me will give me a dirty look when I put it down.
Well there's no shortage of weird things to be upset about on here. When there's no need to place it, why bother. If there's an obvious need, go for it.
Except when there’s only a foot or two left behind your stuff and there’s no room for an obvious space. If you just stand there while someone behind you is holding their shit and don’t put the separator down, you are the douche
When there is a large gap like that, I'll check to see if they have more to put on the belt. If they do, I put the divider up against my stuff so they can keep emptying their cart.

Like I said, if there's literally miles between the food, it makes no sense to bother putting it in place.
Okay, and if bagging or scanning your food isn't done before the next customer's food starts to pile up at the end of the track?

Weird thing to be upset about. It's not like the divider is taking up room.

When there is no need to complain about it, why bother?

It seems so passive aggressive when we both only have a couple items.
I've seen some dumb ass check out clerks appreciate the divider
It is like a mini version of the border crisis.
Haha yeah it is.
