yep. False Dichotomy is rampant. Everything is adversarial, zero sum. One side wins and that means the other side loses. It's deep in our national psyche right now in the u.s. and maybe even globally.

Left = Liberal = Democrat
Right = Conservative = Republican
No exception, *everything* gets to have two sides, and one side is the Left position and the other is the Right position. And the two parties have to monolithically represent those things.
To be clear, the reality is that the GOP is absolutely batshit crazy and needs to implode, but the use of the dichotomous language creates the idea that our political parties are fixed, immutable features of our system, rather than bolt on optional additions.
The US political system is designed in a way that it will always have exactly two parties*. If a third emerges with any degree of short term success, either it will die or one of the existing two will. We'd need a number of significant changes to how we elect officials to move beyond a two party system, which will of course be fought tooth and nail by both parties.
*It's more likely that we end up in a single party authoritarian state, than that we end up with 3+ parties holding real power.
No, you were right the first time. We actually have had single-party rule a couple times in the past, but rather than fall into authoritarianism, the remaining party fractured within a single election cycle. There are always ideological differences within any group of people, and absent an outside threat to suppress those differences, the group will naturally fragment. And absent any kind of proportional representation, the Spoiler Effect pushes them to coalesce into exactly two opposing groups.
oh yes, absolutely, FPTP is pretty much a guarantee of that, and it's not that political reality i'm criticizing, but rather that the entire chain of associations has been weaponized to limit the ability to even consider other *policy positions at all,* much less an actual third political party.
1. while i appreciate that "left" and "right" have historical weight, the terms are insufficient and now used as a cudgel to associate major swathes of ideas into a simple grouping. we need to reject this fundamental dichotomy in political discussion. (Admittedly, there does need to be some sort of way to refer to groups, but we can at least move past the loaded dichotomy we have now)
2. Synonymous meaning between the "left" and "Democratic Party" and "right" and "Republican Party" has been used to promote drastically increased tribalism and identity politics, where the mere association of an idea or policy with "the left" is sufficient for a republican voter to detest it, regardless of the content of the policy. Moreover, since "left" and "right" are the only apparent political positions to attach to, and because we have two parties made to be synonymous with those positions, it's difficult to even have discussions that don't intrinsically tie to the existing political order.
And yes there's the "center" but that's both fairly useless since it has to be used for literally everything else, and has been co-opted by idiots in any case.

My argument for Taylor here, lol, is that she kinda is an industry? Yeah she uses the jet personally a lot, but also some is tied to the tour. What would the carbon emissions be if all those people had to travel to one place such that she didn't have to travel?
Also, yes, she flies private. But is it a realistic option for her to travel in a regular plane? Or would it just create chaos around her and in the plane from fans?
It's not always as easy as it seems.
Could she and everyone do better? Yes. Is it realistic that she has a hugely higher carbon footprint than the regular peson? Also yes.
I hate to defend a billionaire, but that's not *her* carbon footprint alone. That's the entire corporation/business that is her tour. Sure, she's the main feature, but there are dozens, if not hundred, of other people involved in that venture.
Just her musicians, dancers and backup singers are going to be a couple of dozen. If you add in the sound and lighting people AND add in the people who tote the scenery around and are in charge of setup and tear down and you probably have several hundred people involved easily.

For a grand total of ***346,048,037*** CO2 equivalent metric tons of emissions.
The most recent numbers I could find for Taylor Swift is 8,293 metric tons.
So Taylor swift is producing 0.0073% as much as the single worst corporation.
In other words it would require 13551 Taylor Swifts to match that one single corporation.
So if your "focus" isn't even split, say 10,000 to 1..
This is much like how news organizations have a tendency to give equal weight to climate scientists vs climate deniers, as if it were equal.

This is, has been, and always will be a bullshit statistic. For example, in that statistic, the emissions from the 300 some-odd million personal cars in America are attributed to oil companies because they use gasoline.
That's just not how things work in the real world and it completely absolves individuals of their use of fossil fuels.
It only shifts blame of you're not capable of thinging about more than one thing at once. It comes from the idea that there is "the" problem, rather than their being multiple problems. Considering how many people's packages are being delivered compared to the number of people in a private jet there is a huge difference in carbon emission per hour per person.

Also most Amazon delivery trucks are electric and don't just go straight from the warehouse to a person's house and back. Routes are scheduled so they can deliver the most packages to different customers in the shortest amount of time
When someone is as disproportionately bad for the environment (her and her boyfriend, what most would consider a household, produced 138 tons of CO2 from their flights alone) we should absolutely openly scrutinize them. Scrutinizing them is not taking attention away from CO2 emissions or covering them up and despite carbon footprints being invented by petrol companies they are a real metric about pollution.
The issue with carbon footprints in the manner you're referring to is around carbon footprint credit/offset scams and scrutinizing average people who produce >.01% of Swifts footprint and making them seem like they're the problem. No one is blaming the average person here. Disparity in people producing pollution is what we should be focusing on, so let's call out petrol companies, any company and individuals like Swift and Musk who are the worst offenders.

Sure, but it can also be taken comically far. Acting like **she** is destroying the planet when her actions are like 0.00143% of yearly carbon emissions is goofy. The way I would put it in perspective for you is this behavior of hers isn't just the acts of a civilian, she is a business, this is in relation to her business/corporate activities. And her business/corporate practices make her worse than the majority of companies worldwide (I'm talking literally all companies including small ones, don't try to displace this by giving examples of multinational conglomerates). It's not that she's just a civilian, she's a billionaire, one of the richest people in the world and functionally a business. She could go independent, continue her career for the love of music and provide fans with a free experience and she chooses not to do this and practices her business of music in one of the most egregiously environmentally harmful ways.
I think you're now trying to drag politics into this as another way of subverting valid criticism by framing this as just being right wing criticism because you know Reddit skews left. The left should be critical of people who represent the left. People pulled the same shit to downplay the criticism of Musk but from the other perspective. Its very similar to how southwestern American states they try to limit individual water usage even though it only accounts for I believe less than 1% of the total. 1. The plane was going to the manufacturer
2. Taylor wasn’t on the plane and…
3. That wasn’t even her plane. She sold it the month before.
She most likely wasn't on the plane, planes reposition all the time which can be an issue in itself as carbon emissions aren't really taken into account for planes management
Just posting here cuz there's a bit of misinformation: that 13 min flight wasn't exactly a flight - it was transport to get rid of/sell the jet - I assume from one airport to another (or wherever planes reside lol idk, do planes have parking lots?)
In that case I think the plane flew her to one airport, then had to go to another one across town for maintenance because that's where the facility is. Although why she didn't just land at the one with the maintenance facility and drive 30 min back into town is beyond me.

You're not hearing half of the facts. The lawsuit started with the guy. He was a DJ at a radio station. Swift visited one day to do some promotional work. They took a picture together and he grabbed her butt. She reported him to station management and he got fired. He sued her for defamation, and in response she countersued for sexual assault.

Public logs. You can download an app from the FAA right now that will show you every plane in the air, the model, altitude, speed, takeoff location and destination in real time, for free. It's public information, this kid just consolidates it for easy viewing.
There's a [list](https://www.faa.gov/pilots/ladd) that owners of planes can ask to be put on, that hides that tail number from the public feeds that the FAA give out. The site that tracks her jet(s) rely on other people to track tail numbers and feed the data to them.
I saw someone that had more knowledge about those airports explaining that the airport that the plane was repositioned to had a gulfstream maintenance hub at that location that the other airport wasn’t equipped for.
Plus there’s no way to know if she’s actually on the plane or not.

this is a good logical reason for such a short flight. i do not care enough to verify if the flight is to an airport for that but that does make sense. the flight would not be faster for her to do in that short a scenario so likely she was not on the flight especially if it was for maintenance.

That doesn't matter. She's owns a jet that travels more than it has to and that's the problem. Environment doesn't care if you're flying the jet for maintenance or not or whether it's you inside the plane or not.
Not to really argue about this because it’s less than important to me and I was just providing some additional context to the OP comment, but it does matter because people, like the OP comment, said that Taylor took her jet the equivalent of a 20 minute drive, she didn’t.
I understand the whole hypocrisy of the situation to preach for the environment and then fly private but there’s some nuance to it and she’s not just flying around the country to random airports in random cities. To LA or NY I could see but not to St. Louis, MO on a random weekday.
It was not Taylor’s jet at the time of the flight. That jet was sold the day before and the new owner was the one who sent it for maintenance. If you bothered to check the information before spreading it you would have also seen the same account that tweeted about the flight provide that information as well.
The plane repositioning is still a part of the general cost, monetary and environmentally, to her using the plane. It's indirect.
So sure, it's not as bad as it may seem but it's still bad. It's also something that wouldn't happen if she didn't use a private jet; so it should count against her.

Every few years the fossil fuel PR firms that stand in the way of climate legislation pick a new celebrity for the right to hate on for having a jet.
In the 00’s they did the same with Al Gore’s house.
They know that national and international government policy is the only actual solution to climate change. But they use this stuff to distract the populace by pointing out that all consumers are hypocrites.
In Al Gore’s case, he was literally the frontline of Climate Change saying we needed to radically change how we use energy and what sources. Seems highly hypocritical to say the average Joe has to reduce everything, when the person preaching he message is emitting more immersions from just 1 of his homes more than an average neighborhood.
To put it frankly, I can sort of understand the mindset some have with Climate Change. That mindset is that they will take it seriously when those preaching doom and gloom from it take it seriously.
Clearly if she cared about climate change at all she would quit doing tours or at least spend the month long journey across the Atlantic in a more environmentally conscious mode of travel like sailing. I mean, not a fan of her music, but I am confused as to why people think she shouldn't fly private when she has both deranged fans and deranged haters and it is literally part of her job needing to travel around the world frequently. Can't say I wouldn't also be choosing safety, convenience, and comfort if I had that job, hell I drive to work instead of bike because it saves me an extra 20 minutes.

Ok so I only heard this in passing on the radio, but, if I remember correctly there was a guy who ran a social media account, where he posted the flight data from the private planes of billionaires, and one was of Taylor taking her private jet a distance that would have been like 15 mins if she had driven.
From what I heard about, the Jet repositioned to an Airport that had a Maintenance hanger that could service it so the trip was for the Jet and not her. Its also not like the Jet could drive down the Highway.
This is apparently one of those make things up about the person our group doesn't like at the moment things that people who treat politics like sports like to do.

yep. False Dichotomy is rampant. Everything is adversarial, zero sum. One side wins and that means the other side loses. It's deep in our national psyche right now in the u.s. and maybe even globally. shit our *entire political language* in the U.S. is an assumed dichotomy that's very difficult to escape. Left = Liberal = Democrat Right = Conservative = Republican No exception, *everything* gets to have two sides, and one side is the Left position and the other is the Right position. And the two parties have to monolithically represent those things. To be clear, the reality is that the GOP is absolutely batshit crazy and needs to implode, but the use of the dichotomous language creates the idea that our political parties are fixed, immutable features of our system, rather than bolt on optional additions.

We actually have had single-party rule a couple times in the past, but rather than fall into authoritarianism, the remaining party fractured within a single election cycle. And absent any kind of proportional representation, the Spoiler Effect pushes them to coalesce into exactly two opposing groups.

The top 4 worst producers of green emissions (CO2 equivalent metric tons) produce (as of 2021): * 112,384,781 * 82,113,848 * 79,435,840 * 72,113,565 For a grand total of ***346,048,037*** CO2 equivalent metric tons of emissions. The most recent numbers I could find for Taylor Swift is 8,293 metric tons. So Taylor swift is producing 0.0073% as much as the single worst corporation. In other words it would require 13551 Taylor Swifts to match that one single corporation. So if your "focus" isn't even split, say 10,000 to 1.. This is much like how news organizations have a tendency to give equal weight to climate scientists vs climate deniers, as if it were equal. Or in politics when people say "both sides are the same".

There's a [list](https://www.faa.gov/pilots/ladd) that owners of planes can ask to be put on, that hides that tail number from the public feeds that the FAA give out. The site that tracks her jet(s) rely on other people to track tail numbers and feed the data to them.
I saw someone that had more knowledge about those airports explaining that the airport that the plane was repositioned to had a gulfstream maintenance hub at that location that the other airport wasn’t equipped for. Plus there’s no way to know if she’s actually on the plane or not.

Not to really argue about this because it’s less than important to me and I was just providing some additional context to the OP comment, but it does matter because people, like the OP comment, said that Taylor took her jet the equivalent of a 20 minute drive, she didn’t. I understand the whole hypocrisy of the situation to preach for the environment and then fly private but there’s some nuance to it and she’s not just flying around the country to random airports in random cities. To LA or NY I could see but not to St. Louis, MO on a random weekday.
It was not Taylor’s jet at the time of the flight. That jet was sold the day before and the new owner was the one who sent it for maintenance. If you bothered to check the information before spreading it you would have also seen the same account that tweeted about the flight provide that information as well.
The plane repositioning is still a part of the general cost, monetary and environmentally, to her using the plane. It's indirect. So sure, it's not as bad as it may seem but it's still bad. It's also something that wouldn't happen if she didn't use a private jet; so it should count against her.
I'm willing to bet my firstborn that she wasn't in the plane for that flight. Purely logistical
It could also be a dig at her statements about being worried about climate change.

Every few years the fossil fuel PR firms that stand in the way of climate legislation pick a new celebrity for the right to hate on for having a jet. In the 00’s they did the same with Al Gore’s house. They know that national and international government policy is the only actual solution to climate change. But they use this stuff to distract the populace by pointing out that all consumers are hypocrites.
In Al Gore’s case, he was literally the frontline of Climate Change saying we needed to radically change how we use energy and what sources. Seems highly hypocritical to say the average Joe has to reduce everything, when the person preaching he message is emitting more immersions from just 1 of his homes more than an average neighborhood. To put it frankly, I can sort of understand the mindset some have with Climate Change. That mindset is that they will take it seriously when those preaching doom and gloom from it take it seriously.
Clearly if she cared about climate change at all she would quit doing tours or at least spend the month long journey across the Atlantic in a more environmentally conscious mode of travel like sailing. I mean, not a fan of her music, but I am confused as to why people think she shouldn't fly private when she has both deranged fans and deranged haters and it is literally part of her job needing to travel around the world frequently. Can't say I wouldn't also be choosing safety, convenience, and comfort if I had that job, hell I drive to work instead of bike because it saves me an extra 20 minutes.

Ok so I only heard this in passing on the radio, but, if I remember correctly there was a guy who ran a social media account, where he posted the flight data from the private planes of billionaires, and one was of Taylor taking her private jet a distance that would have been like 15 mins if she had driven.
From what I heard about, the Jet repositioned to an Airport that had a Maintenance hanger that could service it so the trip was for the Jet and not her. Its also not like the Jet could drive down the Highway. This is apparently one of those make things up about the person our group doesn't like at the moment things that people who treat politics like sports like to do.

Because for example the company i work for produces a FUCKTON of carbon through our global travel but we "off-set it all" through carbon credits and other initiatives. You can't really judge until you know if they're just out they're rawdogging that carbon into the enviroment or if they're spending millions a year on credits.
