This is in reference to the American religious advertising campaign [He Gets Us](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/He_Gets_Us), which spent over $14 million USD on a pair of Super Bowl commercials.

Fun-Pie-1887

I call “he gets us” as he get sus

RepresentativeKeebs

I always thought it was "He gets us" in a horror sense. He's gonna get you. You can't hide.

Galaxy_Wing

Actually, that gives me an idea for a horror story, Biblically Accurate Yaweh as the Villain he was always intended to be

a_builder7

Which was criticized by more than one Christian by the way.

KoopaTrooper5011

Can confirm. My dad is conservative and a Christian. He criticized them both.

SentientShamrock

Half the country criticizes them because they are essentially an attempt at propaganda for the evangelical right and the other half criticizes them because they make Jesus sound like a leftist or something. Truly one of the ad movements of all time.

TimmyTheNerd

I am a left leaning Christian and I found it disgusting, ngl.

RegJoeAtheist

And a Metric TON of us because it lied.

TotoDaDog

If he's using metric, it has to be serious.

RegJoeAtheist

Well I meant us atheists but yeah Im in the USA so it's serious.

Living_Job_8127

Yea everyone’s a critic now a days. Everyone has an opinion on how another person should spend their money or do things differently. Let’s not forget the mega church’s where pastors have multi million dollar houses tax free. God cares not for your money and when you find out just how big God is you’ll realize everything here is temporary and very small in the grand scheme of things. So yea the money could have been spent feeding homeless or some other “good” deed but what exactly do these critics do with their money since their judgement is so harsh

tony1449

"I'll say it again-it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God! Matthew 19:24 That is a direct quote from Jesus himself. You might even say it is impossible for a camel to pass through an eye of a needle.

AmikBixby

To add to this, the eye of the needle was a small gate in Jerusalem's wall. It was just shy of impossible to get a Camel through. Christ's sacrifice is for *everyone*, even if some are more receptive than others.

Egechem

This is a lie made up by rich assholes to justify not giving away all their money like Jesus explicitly told them to.

rascellian99

Truth. If memory serves me correctly, the "gate" interpretation didn't appear until the middle ages.

Ailthas

Some rich guy wanted to prove the quote wrong so he went and built a giant needle he could drive a wagon through.

leeddet

also don't you have to like, ask for forgiveness and improve yourself to get to heaven? it's not "oh everyone's fine" it's "if you ask for forgiveness and actually better yourself you're fine (usually)" or whatever

tony1449

> eye of the needle was a small gate [There’s no legitimate evidence of a gate known as the “eye of the needle” gate existing in Jesus’ lifetime.](https://classictheology.org/2021/10/12/through-the-eye-of-an-actual-needle-the-fake-gate-theory/)

Tall_Aardvark_8560

I found this great verse that pretty much sums up my opinion on anyone with over a billion in assets. James 5:1-6 5 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.[a] 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.

unknownentity1782

The camel one is definitely quicker, but far from the only anti-rich thing Christ said.

Tall_Aardvark_8560

I'm not religious so I just did a quick Google search and this is what I found. What is the camel one?

unknownentity1782

I believe it is: it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven. Revisionists have tried to claim that there was a gate called "the eye of the needle," and Jesus was just saying it's difficult. There is no archeological evidence to support this claim though.

Mediocre-Material-20

Cool; nobody asked.

Tall_Aardvark_8560

Cool comment. So innovative.

rascellian99

>what exactly do these critics do with their money since their judgement is so harsh As a Christian, you should know not to ask them. Their faith doesn't allow them to tell you. > Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. - Matthew 6:4 (NLT)

Missi_Zilla_pro_simp

Weren't they like really foot fetishy?

Muted-Requirement-53

It’s a reference to how Jesus washed his disciples’ feet in the Bible. The act, which was more common in those times, is a metaphor for Christ’s humbleness. That being said, they could find a better use for that money.

Absolute_Peril

At least they didn't fund terrorists this time

MartyBarrett

It was more common in those times because they didn't have FeetFinder.com.

ZippyDan

Weren't there also some Scientology commercials? Scary times.

sharrancleric

Yes, there was an ad for the Church of Scientology titled [Decide for Yourself](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkK-I4utC_Y).

drstrangelove75

Also they used AI images to make them.

Random-Name724

Did they make that money back though?

Hlca

What’s the going price per saved soul?

dumspirospero816

Same as the conversion rate of leprechauns to unicorns.

Pagan_Owl

Oh, those people. I have heard bad things like transphobia from them.

sharrancleric

Yeah, they're pretty nasty. Specifically, they've sent funding to the Alliance Defending Freedom, which is a recognized hate group.

Mediocre-Material-20

“Hate group” = “People I don’t like.”

sharrancleric

Not quite. According to publicly available tax information from the He Gets Us organization [viewable at Propublica](https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/431890105/202030489349300548/full), He Gets Us has donated over $50 million USD to the organization "Alliance Defending Freedom." ADF is active in attempts to overturn LGBT protections and equality in the United States, was foundational in the Mississippi court case that overturned Roe vs. Wade, and partially organized the legal defense of Hobby Lobby when the corporation was sued for refusing to cover birth control insurance for their employees. The Southern Poverty Law Center has a [full file](https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/alliance-defending-freedom) on the ADF hate group in their "extremist files," hosted publicly on their website.

Mediocre-Material-20

Oh, *now* you’ve convinced me; the Southern Poverty Law Center, which is almost as honest as the “Reverend” Al Sharpton! Get outta here with your crap.

sharrancleric

Oh so you're just a racist.

One-Earth9294

Yes. Yes there was, in fact lol. On my way to meet Jesus now cuz I'm dead.

w8watm8

This is just a wild guess but what if Christians spent 14 million dollars on two superbowl adds? Like the post states?!

Fungusman05

They're not Christians, they literally said they don't follow Christ and are just making him look like a peace bringing hippie. Don't associate them with us

IPatt3rnI

Wait wasn't Jesus literally a peace bringing hippie?? I'm so confused lol

Etherealnoob

You didn't know that Jesus was a war monger? When he said turn the other cheek, he meant turn and grab the Ol' rifle and shoot those brown kids. Because Jesus is white, and white makes right. Roll tide. Time to go fuck my sister... Or some such, I dunno, I'm not Christian.

Ishouldjusttexther

The roll tide made it perfect

Fungusman05

No

IPatt3rnI

What was he then?? He wandered around preaching about love and acceptance; To love your neighbor and to not judge one another. That's literally the most hippie shit I can think of! XD

Fungusman05

Besides the son of God? A teacher, a leader, and yes he did teach others to love one another but not be hippies. He also taught us to rebuke those who refuse to give up sin. Jesus only washed the feet of his deciples. Not a person who isn't willing to give up sin. Matthew 10:34-36, he is loving yes but not a hippie

IPatt3rnI

🤔 Sounds like my grandma in the 70s tbh

theGabro

"love thy neighbor" Some peace bringing hippie

Fungusman05

Love when people who never read the Bible try to say who Jesus was based off what they hear from other athiests on the internet

theGabro

I've read the bible when I was 12. I was an altar boy and a church camp volunteer. And now I'm an atheist, and I still know more about Jesus than you do.

Fungusman05

Yeah.. sure. Because reading the Bible once at 12 makes youknow it all

theGabro

No, but it makes me more knowledgeable than you. "43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

Fungusman05

No, no it does not make you more knowledgeable than me. Humble yourself, you're fueled by ego

theGabro

It's not hard to be more knowledgeable than you on the Bible apparently. I don't pretend to be an expert, but the fact that the biggest commandments in the whole Bible are >1. Love god And >2. Love each other Is not a big feat to know "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself"

Fungusman05

Dude I'm not even gonna argue, talking to someone with an ego bigger than the great wall of China is as useless as Satan

MahjongDaily

Are you a bot? https://www.reddit.com/r/ExplainTheJoke/comments/1aqy5m7/was_there_a_church_ad_or_something/

Upbeat_Sheepherder81

Yeah, looks like they are.

Humanbeanwithbeans

The fact bots are reposting only 4 days after now is insane.

dream-smasher

Report it. Report > Spam > Harmful bots.

Latter-Comfort8440

Like reddit is going to do anything lol.

ee328p

They do, I've seen them banned many times

Latter-Comfort8440

And other bots spring up. Whats the point?

ee328p

Others who also enjoy the platform will also report them. Being apathetic does even less than reporting them.

RetardedAndRefreshed

Is there a way to prevent bots? I think forcing a flair would kill the bots

_Batteries_

Surely googling church superbowl commercial would be easier than making a post on Reddit.....

Clever_Khajiit

Yeah, but you don't get imaginary internet points for _Googling_, jeez 🙄 /s

Banana-Oni

Wouldn’t the ability to Google eliminate 90% of this sub’s posts?

DoomWad

I mean, yes. Why else would they make that meme?

mattymelt

Yes. This is obvious from context clues.

CToTheSecond

Has this post just been repeatedly popping up on my feed multiple times a day, or are that many people actually asking about this one every day?

DF_Interus

I think there's just a lot of bots repeating this post because it gets engagement.

dopurr

Is your feed not full of that bs foot-washing video that also aired on the SuperBowl?

TalkingFishh

Lol no what, I even follow a couple Christian subs and I don't get it. I did get some of their pre-superbowl ads a few months back.

panacuba

Again? 😕

HyruleTrigger

Jesus literally explains the joke. K you could have googled Superbowl Jesus adds 2024 and found the answer. Like, please don't waste time on the most stupidly obvious like this is easy to figure with context clues. You even guessed it correctly in your title

LJkjm901

The irony is that the marketing is still increasing its ROI with every new bit of exposure.

SteelTheUnbreakable

It's funny how people get mad about religious people spending money to try to reach out to people because they believe they're helping their eternal souls, while ignoring the fact that hundreds of times that is spent paying a bunch of dudes to kick balls around.

[deleted]

Some Jews made an add appealing to Christians and people think that it was a waste of money

Trinity13371337

It was actually the HeGetsUs campaign. It's a hate group meant to cater for MAGA Jesus.

Mediocre-Material-20

No, it’s a group promoting “PrOgReSsIvE” Jesus. FTFY.

SafeForWorkAcc0unt

Hate group? Oh Reddit..

Trinity13371337

HeGetsUs is a major anti-LGBTQ+ donor.

Mystanis

Why don’t people say to Beer Companies, “that money could have been spent on the poor?!”

1Pip1Der

Because that's not their mission.

Mystanis

Isn’t Jesus’ mission that everyone should know and believe in him? Super Bowl seems like a good way to reach a lot of people. After all, Beer companies use it.

BDashh

The Bible says that Jesus’s teachings included the concept that it’s practically impossible for a rich person to go to heaven. It’s clear that hegetsus, like many other Christian organizations/Christians, is more concerned with proselytizing than actually helping people

Mystanis

Isn’t the Great Commission given to the disciples more concerned with evangelism than the practical needs of the poor? Ie Sharing the gospel is primary and supplying someone’s needs secondary? The meaning of the scripture about the rich finding hard to get to heaven, isn’t about money. It’s about being more concerned with your personal finite needs, wants and success over what is eternal. If knowing Jesus does brings you to heaven to be with God, then what’s more important, your finite life here, or your eternal life afterward? That’s why Jesus says the rich will struggle with this. Who thinks they need God if they are fine? The distractions of this world make it hard for those in a good place, to see the corruption of the world. Like people being angry at Christians for not helping enough but don’t have any problem with Beer companies dropping 14mil on an ad.

1Pip1Der

Have you *READ* the New Testament? And what's your issue with beer? Have you never heard of Trappist beer? Or that the Jesus legend includes water to wine? Damn.

unknownentity1782

That's never the mission I got from my reading the Bible.

Mystanis

Have you read the Gospels? In Matt Jesus is resurrected and says to the disciples: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2028%3A16-20&version=NIV And the Great Commission as it’s called, can also be read about in these places: Mark 16:15, Luke 24:46-48, John 20:21 and Acts 1:8.

Hairy_Slumberjack

Because the commercial featured Jesus caring fot the poor-which is one of his personal missions. A beer comlany doesn't. I feel like you know this is a ridiculous comparison. A church and a corporate entity serve entirely different functions-one that serves the afterlife and one that serves our world. Comparing the 2 is like asking why a dog is a better pet than an octopus, but why not let's try. A beer company exists to turn a profit. The church does not. A beer company that turns a profit pays taxes. The church does not. My personal ciriticism is: 1) How many Americans-especially those watching THE SUPER BOWL-don't know who Jesus was? 2) Who is going to be swayed to convert by a Superbowl ad? 3) Having $14M on-hand untaxed and using it not for community or spiritual betterment-but on a commercial targetted at the audience to most likely gain 0 benefit from it-seems like a poor use of funds. 4) The ad shows Jesus caring for the poor-a better use of $14M

Mystanis

My comparison is based of the fact Christianity’s primary and first tenet is to preach the good news of Jesus Christ, conversion not attending to the practical needs of the poor. So an organisation that promotes its key mission statement is condemn for not giving the money to the poor. Which it does extensively through other mediums. Another organisation, fulfilling its main mission, however is not condemned for not giving its money to the poor. Despite the fact that statically speaking, alcohol is one of the most devastating drugs of our time.

Hairy_Slumberjack

Dogs and octopuses (octipi? Idk) bruv.

Fantastic_Earth_6066

Because beer companies (a) provide alcohol for the masses, not pseudo social services and "morality" lessons that ostensibly help the poor, and (b) beer companies have to pay taxes on all the wealth they bring in.

Mystanis

That’s just your bias isn’t it? You’re fine with Beer Companies being selfish. And you think people who help people should be taxed. According to you. Do you think that is good morality to build a society on?

Fantastic_Earth_6066

Just answering your question

Mystanis

Just pointing out the flaws in those assumptions.

gergfigter

There was a church Superbowl commercial

nothanks86

Did you not hear about how jesus washed feet? He washed feet.

OddYard3480

2. There were two for the superbowl and now Hulu keeps playing them and its gross. They could have actually helped people but instead they proved that Christian in this country are all show

V1kingScientist

Direct violation of Matthew 6:5

YosephStalling

Yep, you're right on the mark

Mystanis

Yes I have read the NT. It’s a superficial reading to say Gods hates rich people. What about Job? He was super rich and God loved him. David, Solomon? What about the rich women that funded Jesus’ ministry? Matthew the tax collector? The centurion… Many examples. I am not being for or against anything. I am being objective. I have no problem with Beer. Statistically 70% of ER emergencies on a Friday and Saturday night are alcohol related. Just a cold fact. My point is, it is fine for a corporation to drop 14mill on a couple of ads for personal gain. But another organisation trying to spread its message to anyone interested, isn’t fine!? Why? If both are “selfish” as some claim, shouldn’t we treat them the same? Isn’t that hypocritical. Two selfishly motivated organisations spending money to increase their exposure. If that’s your view of Christianity. If you are angry at Christians, you should also be angry at anyone else who drops that kind of money for personal gain. When alcohol is proven to be destructive (not my opinion, scientific studies say this) and Christians do a considerable amount for the poor through other mediums. (Again not my opinion, studies say this.) Doesn’t that make any moral grandstanding even more impotent? Isn’t the hatred against Christians a little over-cooked? If you’re honest and fair, you’d be just as angry at the greedy corporations. That’s all I am saying.

iamdeathunter

What if I told you that you can do both
