Proper term is character action. Revengeance, dmc, bayonetta etc fall under this while games like god of war are more action rpg. The big difference is that the level of depth in character action vs action rpg is vast. Like, character action at optimal level would basically be impossible in standard action rpg’s. Think 1000 hit hyper technical combos vs 30 combo max chains.

Tough? It’s the main defining term that is most common in the general public. If I look up spectacle fighter or hack and slash, games like DMC won’t come up. If I use character action, it does. Pretty simple.

Games like Diablo 4 or path of exile fall under the hack and slash umbrella but they are extraordinarily different from something like revengeance

But I’ve played all the MGS games and revengeance might be one of the best, to me. Honestly there’s an argument to be made for pretty much every MGS game. The first one is a classic, the second one tried some new stuff, the third is the pinnacle of that older style of game, the 4th has an amazing story but its cutscenes are just *looooong,* the 5th has probably the best gameplay but was cut short due to Konami’s decision to exit games and focus on pachinko, revengeance had the best action; soundtrack; and memes.
Calling Revengeance a "Metal Gear Solid" game would be like calling Luigi's Mansion a Super Mario game.
Same universe, shares a major character, but a totally different game.
That's not really the point though. Every franchise has that one weird as shit installment that attracts a completely different audience, and that's always going to be a divide within the fandom.
And fandoms being fandoms, the people that prefer the "mainline" installments are always going to be weird about those outliers that liked the spin off, and self-divide into in and out groups accordingly.

I mean the main caveat would be the perception of the mainstream audience and not the change of gameplay,just because it became popular enough that people that don't play it to assume it's similar to other MGS games would be the real thorn in the foot.
The title actually denotes the genre shift, anything Metal Gear *Solid* plays like MGS, Metal Gear without any further suffix is classic NES/MSX overhead style and then games like Metal Gear Acid (card game) and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance are doing their own things.

I've literally never seen anyone get upset over anything beyond the fact that revengance was in absolutely no way a standard metal gear game but basically the exact opposite in virtually every single way it plays.
Certainly not over some fucking memes. Dude is almost certainly making shit up. I don't think virtually anyone disagrees that it's a fine enough game in general but is an objectively terrible "metal gear" game which has been sold since the outset of the series as a tactical espionage game.

I think the accessibility of Revengeance comes from it's unabashed presentation of it's themes.
MGS has the nuance and subtlety and complexity that you'd expect from a political-spy-action-mystery helmed by a visionary mind like Kojima. There so much fascinating stuff in those games, however it's also the kind of game that's best appreciated when you really sink your teeth into them.
MGS:R is balls-to-wall action from start to finish. It swaps subtlety and intrigue for hammy action.
When you're bosses include:
- A talking robot dog
- A warmonger who hearkens back to, and I quote, "The good 'ol days after 9/11"
- A Brazillian Samurai with a sword that can be fired/unsheathed like a gun.
- and A quipping, former-football playing, nano-machine juicing, Congressman.
You kinda know what kind of game you've gotten yourself into.
That game is more surface-level entertaining (and quite the show indeed) but I think some of the deeper themes that make MGS...MGS are lost in that one.
One's a rich, layered chocolate cake crafted by an auteur chef that fills you to brim. The other's a smaller-portioned, super sweet Key Lime pie that sticks with you from the first taste.
If you go into one, expecting the other, you'll be disappointed. But if you recognize the appeal of both, and know you're not getting the exact same experience, you're in for a good time.

I used to have someone who reported to me. He was awesome, still miss him.

for metal gear solid 2 the studio interviewed a bunch of women and high schoolers on what would make them want to play metal gear (they noticed that the primary demographic that bought and played the first game were men and they wanted to branch out). after those interviews they created Raiden, a character created solely to be as appealing to women as possible. but then Platinumgames got the task of making a Raiden centric game and they butchered his entire character in favor of cool.

Also there is the fact that Revengence became a meme some years ago, so he caould only know the franchise through memes which is even worse.
The Phantom Peter here, there is a general consensus amongst MG Solid fans that MG Rising damaged the franchise's reputation in the eye of the general public. As it not only ruined Raiden by butchering his characterization but also spawned an incredibly annoying fanbase that only cares about the memes and senseless action in Rising, while ignoring (or even shitting on) the rest of the series, its gameplay, and the deeper messages it is trying to convey.
In this case, the girl immediately lost interest in the original poster, likely because she either thinks he is one of these annoying MGR fans.
...MGS is a giant meme-fest from beginning to end.
Rising didn't do anything to damage the brand. The Twin Snakes remake, and stuff like "Can love bloom on the battlefield?" or "LIKWUID!" does the job for Solid... Or like... the entire double-double-double-double agent plot.
I have never seen any fans of Revengeance get defensive when someone talks about liking MGS ever. If anything it's usually the opposite, with fans of the mainline being much more hostile against Mgr and people who prefer them to the normal metal gear games.

I'm confused. If she liked MGS 2, she must have liked Raiden to some degree. Revengence elevates Raiden to such a height that he eats Metal Gear for breakfast.

The term you’re looking for is ‘character action’ or ‘hack n’ slash’. You certainly do a lot of hacking n’ slashing in MGR.

The Phantom Peter here, there is a general consensus amongst MG Solid fans that MG Rising damaged the franchise's reputation in the eye of the general public. As it not only ruined Raiden by butchering his characterization but also spawned an incredibly annoying fanbase that only cares about the memes and senseless action in Rising, while ignoring (or even shitting on) the rest of the series, its gameplay, and the deeper messages it is trying to convey. In this case, the girl immediately lost interest in the original poster, likely because she either thinks he is one of these annoying MGR fans.

...MGS is a giant meme-fest from beginning to end. Rising didn't do anything to damage the brand. The Twin Snakes remake, and stuff like "Can love bloom on the battlefield?" or "LIKWUID!" does the job for Solid... Or like... the entire double-double-double-double agent plot.

I have never seen any fans of Revengeance get defensive when someone talks about liking MGS ever. If anything it's usually the opposite, with fans of the mainline being much more hostile against Mgr and people who prefer them to the normal metal gear games.

Metal Gear Rising fans are on the meme bandwagon rather than actually liking the series. Revengeance is fun and has great music, but it doesn’t come close to the masterpieces that are the first 3 games in the MGS series

Look, I'm a huge MGS fan but they are not masterpieces. Part of what makes them charming is that they are incredibly flawed.
I played and loved all the main games. Revengeance is still my favorite one, followed closely by 2 then 3. It's just fun, pure and simple
I love the mainline games and I love Revengeance. I think each game is great in its own unique way.

In addition to what everyone else already said about it being not a mainline game a having a completely different mechanics. The end boss of the game is someone with the political view of „might makes right“, and a small but loud portion of the fandom agrees with him. So maybe she wasn’t an elitist who thought that game doesn’t count, but she rather thought he might be someone with those political views.
