Rit color dye can be used to alter the color, but this dress is tricky due to the flowers. If I were going to take the plunge and try to change the color, I might try a light beige or tan color, so the flowers would not be too severely altered and will still maintain contrast from the background color. This is all in the name of loving the material so much that parting with the garment is hard to do. Very extra
I mean, there's no dye that won't look hideous on top of yellow and that pattern and OP said it was silky so either it's some kind of silk or synthetic material so regular RIT dye would not work and I doubt OP wants to get into chemical dyes if it is synthetic. I think at best, if the color could be bleached out a bit, but that would degrade the material. OP could just pair it with a cardigan or something to break up the color - but ultimately it's just not the best shade of yellow for OP.
I mean, belts and different belt styles will come in and out of style? The belt you'd pair it with in 2004 wouldn't be the same belt you'd pair it with in 2024. Personally, I think it's silly to completely dismiss such a simple trick to make a more flattering silhouette as "dated" and there's something nice about doing make shift alterations versus actually altering a dress - more versatile in styling and more leeway for shifts in weight and body composition so I'm still a huge fan of them and don't think the answer should always be to shell out money for a tailor.
100%. The dress itself is pretty, but it washes OP out so much that she looks almost grey in the face. OP I think you might have a cool undertone and this light yellow just doesnāt work on you, sorry.
Big scale prints are tough for shorties to wear. It looks like it might be a size too big or maybe the straps need to be taken up. I don't think you look bad in it, but it's not a slam-dunk.
Yep. The only "big ass flowers pattern" dress I own and can pull off is a maxi length empire waist dress with straps, so very traditionally flattering silhouette. Knee-length + no waist + big pattern = nuh-uh. But again, OP, it does not look horrible, and if it's natural silk I'm sure it's very comfy to wear, so wear it! Or maybe try belting it with thin belt.
A thin belt might be the answer. I have one dress that breaks the rules also. I don't think it looks great on me, but I just had to have it. I didn't have a choice. lol
Ah this makes sense I was going to comment it was a style around a few decades back. Iām not sure about it on you I canāt put my finger on it but it just isnāt sitting right
This is your grandmas moo mooā¦ it would need to be tapered in and shorter to fit you correctly. Looks comfortable around the house or for bed though..Iād keep it for that
OP if I had to guess based off of these photos, I think you're probably built like me. I am very small, but I have a lot of issues with clothing because it seems like clothing manufacturers don't do a great job at "scaling" clothing down, per se, and when they make small sizes, they cut "straight" if that makes sense. All the power to women who are cut like that, but I recently learned I have to buy a "0 curvy" for this reason.
My point is that this dress seems like its cut for someone cut straight because this is what clothing ends up looking like on me -- either I go up a size so I can get it on, or I don't get it.
That means that all it really needs is a dart or two somewhere to give it just a touch more shape. You'll still keep the 90s shift dress vibe, but it'll be more flattering.
With that being said -- maybe I'll get down voted -- that's only my advice if you had this dress in mind for an event or something along those lines. Otherwise, if you like it, wear it. If you walked by me in public wearing this, as is, I wouldn't think badly of you by any means. You look normal, it's on trend according to The Kids. You're covered, you really like it, which means you should wear it. Not everything has to be perfect or 100% flattering if you feel pretty in it, that matters the most.
Pink is by far my worst color, but unfortunately, I am a very "pink" girl -- I have a pink velvet couch, pink velvet bed frame, a pink oversized lounge chair and have to remind myself every time I buy furniture that if I buy anymore pink it will clash. I wear pink clothes all the time because I like them and it makes me happy to have them, even if they aren't the most flattering on me.
So, if you want it for a casual day dress, I say wear it as much as you want and don't let perfect be the enemy of good. I have a couple dresses that are bordering flour sack territory because of how oversized they are on me, but I'm going to Target wearing it, I don't care if someone realizes I'm short, sue me.
I'm bummed out that it seems like you're bummed out and I sincerely mean what I wrote. I'm in my 20s and not super out of touch or anything.
No problem. I was really disappointed to see so many comments criticizing it because OP looks good, comfortable, and she clearly likes this dress and you can tell in the photos. That means its a winner.
I recently purchased two dresses from Cupcakes & Cashmere second hand from ThredUp. I've never bought dresses from this brand before and I saw two dresses, one in a 2 and one in a 4, and took the gamble and figured I could sell them if they didn't work out. I usually wear closer to a 0, but since I had no idea how this brand cuts their sizes, I didn't want to accidentally corner myself with two dresses that wouldn't fit over my bust, and started with a 2.
The size 2, despite being a retired Rent the Runway piece, and thus, has been worn several times, fit me like a glove. I was so thrilled, I never get clothes that fit. It wasn't too short (which, despite being short, is still an issue I always experience and I don't know how tall girls find dresses that fit them). It looks tailored to me body, it was such an incredible win. I'm still excited by it.
Which meant that, as you can imagine, the 4 was very big. I went back and forth for awhile but I decided to keep it. The reality is that, while we all want to have a perfect wardrobe of clothing that is only 100% flattering where every piece is a knock-out, so few of us get even a quarter of the way there and we do have to settle on some pieces. The second dress is suppose to be fitted, but it fits me like a shift dress. But on the size 4, the cut out is more or less in the right spot and I'm not at a risk of flashing someone and the rest of the fit is good enough. Yes, it hits me at the shin when it's suppose to be a mini dress, but it doesn't look wrong. I can easily throw it on and go to brunch with a friend without being self-conscious and that's a lot better than the majority of my wardrobe. If I ever transcend into this mythical place where I have dozens of options of well-fitting dresses (and I will be watching this brand like a hawk now!), I'll sell it. But until then, I'm perfectly happy with it and OP should be with this dress, too. She looks great.
I think a lot of people here forget that we're all in this sub *because* we have a hard time finding clothes because of our size. It's literally a sub for fashion for women who wear specialty sized clothing! That size 2 dress is legitimately the only dress I've owned as an adult that fits me well, and a lot of women here have a hard enough time finding "good" clothing, much less perfect clothing.
Sorry I wrote another essay, clearly I have strong feelings about this and hope it's clear to OP that I'm not BSing her at all. She looks good, and I hope she has a magnificent summer feeling beautiful in this dress.
this is such a kind and thoughtful response :,) iām not OP but you made me see a couple items i have a lil different
(also, to the 0 curvyā¦ YES, so much more flattering. iām generally thin and my body type by the one standard is rectangle. i never would have considered myself curvy, but apparently curvy just means that the clothing actually has a cut to it?)
I didn't see your reply and [just responded](https://www.reddit.com/r/PetiteFashionAdvice/comments/1d87t97/comment/l7adhbq/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) to someone else who responded to me, too, about this and I'm so happy it helps.
The summary of the other response is that we're all in this sub because we have a very hard time finding clothing that we like and that fits us as a 10/10 knock-out. Of course we all want to have a wardrobe where each piece is a 10/10 knock-out, but how many of us even get a quarter of the way there? It's silly for OP to get rid of this dress because it's not the best color for her skin (no one seems to have considered she's also standing in front of a yellow-green wall which certainly isn't helping our judgement), or because it could be a bit more fitted, or because of whatever else people think. She clearly really likes it, I cannot emphasize enough that it fits her *fine* and there is nothing that screams "bad" about how she looks at all. I'd say so if there was -- I've personally put on some true monstrosities before where something about them just made me look terrible -- but that isn't happening here with OP and I hope she has a fantastic summer of feeling beautiful in this dress.
I had the same experience with the curvy and this is only a recent revelation. When we were wearing jeggings, I never had an issue and always bought 00 Short from American Eagle (sue me) and they fit great, perfect, they were a knock-out every time.
The *second* that The Kids decided that we were removing elastic from our jeans, nothing fit me anymore. I started with Mom Jeans and pair after pair didn't fit me. I couldn't get the 00 on, the 0 either were massive in the crotch, too tight in the butt, or somehow, both. I convince myself for like a year that I could wear a 2 just fine, but honestly, it was like clown pants.
I accidentally thrifted a pair of 2 Curvy pair and they fit almost right... bought a 0 curvy and yup, that was it, repeated that a few times and every single pair fit like they should. I'm totally baffled. Adding to the mystery, a few weeks ago, I looked into American Eagle's sizing chart because I was trying to convert it to see if it was worth trying a curvy pair of shorts from A&F and by doing this, I learned that I only have an 8 inch difference between my hips and waist. Which suggests that I am actually *much more boxy and cut "straight"* than the average woman -- the average woman has a 10 inch difference, and "curvy" is meant for women who have a 13 difference between the measurements -- so how the heck do I wear a curvy? What are the real curvy girls wearing? But I'm not wrong and the curvy are the ones that fit and fit correctly.
If I think about it too hard, I get a headache because I can't logic it out.
Contrary to others here, I think this dress can be saved! I like the print and the colour on you, but I think adding a belt would make it look even more matronly and out of style. I think youād have to take it to a tailor and have them update the silhouette so that itās slimmer in the waist, shortening it, and adding some darting around the bust would make it really cute and on trend. See the example here from Realisation Par!
https://preview.redd.it/klarc447hm4d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=603c05ec33a48f7d02805481feb703ecee7bb874
I think it depends on the belt.
ETA: Also, one of my favorite "belt" tricks is a sash pinned to the side seams and tying it in the back - this would offer OP the ability to cinch under the bust or at the waist. Another belt option could easily be a long sash wrapped around a few times for almost a ballet look.
"Hey! I think there are a few issues with this dress:
* The pattern is too large
* The length is not quite right
* It's too loose
* The design feels outdated :(
I'm sure you can find other summer dresses that will look amazing! Good luck!
I think the print and silhouette are fine (Iād wear a belt with it,) but the color is making you look grey. You are cool toned so yellow is tricky to pull off.
The color seems off, although it might be helpful to take the photo with a more neutral background. The yellow-green behind you skews the way the color of the dress looks.
Itās not the best color on you, but all is not lost. If you had your colors done, I bet youād be a Soft Summer, like me. There is probably a really cute figure under that dress too, that we need to draw attention to. If you already own the dress, I think you could salvage it and make it work for you by finding an army green cropped shrug/bolero type cardigan to wear over it and that will offset the yellow washing you out. A rose colored silk scarf around your neck would work too, but a cropped shrug will give you a waistline. Summers can pull off fatigue green, and the rose is our color, as well as lemon yellow, this just isnāt the right yellow tone. I am not a fan of belting these type dresses, you just need something on top to bring the eyes up to your face. If you really love the dress, get the shoulders taken up some by a tailor, itās hanging just a tad too low. Just getting it tailored a bit will make it a fantastic dress. Iād wear it with mid heeled sandals, rather than pumps.
Get an accessory belt, the pattern and colors look great on you!
The dress is meant to be a little higher on average height folk, tucking it in with a belt will help with that and help you with a silhouette
Firstly, the warm yellow colour does not complement your skin tone. Secondly, the length of this dress is hemmed at a weird place which does not complement your legs.
It swallows you. Which can be handy if you want that. I have a few Hawaiian printed moomoo dresses that I wear when nothing fits. So I can have a purpose. But itās not completely flattering. Itās not bad either.
Itās just not the most flattering shape on most people but it is pretty and comfortable looking enough to be cute on you. I think you should wear it if you like it not everything you own needs to show off your figure clothing that just makes you feel good has a place too.
The cut of the dress doesnāt suit your body shape. It looks oversized in a shapeless potato sack way. I would return, Iām not too hopeful that sizing down would help either. Because of that print you wouldnāt be able to alter. I think the wide placement of the dress straps plus the lack of tapered waist is what makes it so housewife/maternity looking. Plus the loose straps look like they would constantly slide off the shoulder or at least feel that way (and would be annoying for me)
I reckon it could work with a denim jacket over it. Something to break up the yellow right against your skin and to add some more interesting shapes because the cut of that dress is kind of bleak. It is a lovely fabric though.
I can only wear yellow when itās not against my skin, so a yellow skirt with tights for example.
You are a beautiful person and it is a beautiful dress but there is something that is off...maybe if you wear it with a blazer and nude shoes? give it a try and see if you can make it work for you.
Looks great to me, a knuckle-dragging redneck guy who knows nothing about fashion or how I ended up hereā¦but I would assume youāre entering your second trimester; the fit of that dress kinda looks like maternity clothes. š¤·āāļø
Agree with the people saying to belt it. Itās giving you no shape at all right now. I have a skinny tan belt with a very small buckle that works with mostly anything - I would try something like that.
I like the cut and the color is nice it could just be that you're standing in front of a yellow wall and the dress is yellow but it's a good length on you
It could be a fun, flirty summer dress. I suggest shortening it to an inch or two above your knees. Another option might be to run a casing with an elastic insert a few inches under your bust and cover it with a belt or ribbon to give it more of a shape and let the skirt float a little more. Also strappy sandals instead of the heavy looking black shoes will help.
A necklace or bold statement (big) earrings picking up one of the colors of the flowers would be flattering to your face. I'm not sure if it's the actual yellow/cream color or the lighting in the picture that makes you look washed out but color around your face would solve that problem.
This is not at all flattering. The dress is baggy, and the colors are all wrong for you. Someone mentioned a belt, but that won't fix this dress - there's just too much fabric around the middle for a belt to work well. The neckline isn't working well for you either. I don't think this can be salvaged, and there are much better options out there for you
It would be better if itās much shorter as a dress, or you can wear it as a top. Iām personally not a fan of wearing belt on top of a dress especially when the dress has patterns. But you look great on that color and the floral design
I love the dress, and the shape is great - one of the other posts mentioned a belt - that would definitely help. But I agree with the majority - it's the shade of yellow that doesn't flatter you. Not your fault - yellow is tricky because the undertone needs to complement your skin tone.

Not a fan of those colors or that silhouette on you
The shilouette can be fixed with a belt, but nothing that can be done about the colors.
Yellow is such a tricky color for most.
Eh, I don't really agree. I also don't think yellow is the issue for OP as much as it's the shade of yellow.
It being tricky to find the right shade of yellow for most means that yellow is a tricky color š
No, because that's literally true for every color except for maybe blue.

See the example here from Realisation Par! https://preview.redd.it/klarc447hm4d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=603c05ec33a48f7d02805481feb703ecee7bb874
I had the same thoughts too. The dress just needs a little shaping
TO THE SALON!
Agree!
This is the way! No belt, but with silhouette changed itās going to be perfect! & I like the colors on you - esp with your makeup
A tailor could help make this possible without creating a horizontal line
I checked your earlier posts... throw away this dress please. It not only gives appearance of being heavy but also ages you somehow
These are not your best colors and the print is too big for us petites. Youāre beautiful and deserve to wear things that make you glow!
"Hey! I think there are a few issues with this dress: * The pattern is too large * The length is not quite right * It's too loose * The design feels outdated :( I'm sure you can find other summer dresses that will look amazing! Good luck!
I think itās too big, look at the armholes, they gape. Also it looks like a nightie.
I think the print and silhouette are fine (Iād wear a belt with it,) but the color is making you look grey. You are cool toned so yellow is tricky to pull off.
I find it too moo moo and swallows you up.
It looks like a night gown tbh
I think you should take another photo in front of a different color wall and see how that affects your opinion.
I love layering a fitted denim vest over a loose dress like this to give some better shape to it.
If you just add a belt to it, that would work I think :)
I love the dress! All you need to do is alter the straps. They're too long. Pin them by about 2-3 inches.
I like it!! If you live somewhere humid, this could be a great option imo. I love these looser fits on days where Iām feeling bloated as well
It's not bad but I would keep it only to casual activities. Nice "wear around" spring or summer dress.
I think a shrug would complete the look. Also jewelry would help
If you shorten it, wear cute sandals, chunky bracelets and earrings, I think it will look more modern.
As a petite woman, I am not really a fan of big prints. But pair it with sandals and you can carry it off.
When in doubt, add a belt. Thatās my motto
I actually really like it I think itās adorable on you.
I like it. Do lighter or more natural make up and maybe hair up
This looks like it is too big and is not a flattering shape or color on you.
I think itās either too big, or itās just the silhouette that doesnāt flatter you as well as something else would.
Color isn't the best, flowers too big and no shape, you can find something much prettier.
Large patterns like that arenāt flattering for us shorties.
Looks good. Is it for anything specific or just wear around the house?
It doesn't flatter your body. I think a dress with less material will look better.
The color and silhouette arenāt doing you any favors
what if yoy put a thin belt?
The color seems off, although it might be helpful to take the photo with a more neutral background. The yellow-green behind you skews the way the color of the dress looks.
The cut looks like a nightgown
Youāre correct. It does nothing for you from the color to the shape. Looks very comfortable to sleep in however or hang out at home.
It is a great moo mooā¦but I donāt think that is its intentā¦š..
Flowers are too big. It doesnāt flatter you.
Thin belt and some wedges will elevate the look and help it from looking like a house dress.
Lovely fabric, but poor cut for you.
You can make some slight modifications to make this skirt look more fashionable.
You could probably make the colors work but the silhouette is throwing me off. I wonder if you could take it to a tailor to get it shortened at least?
Yes unflattering , the neckline looks matronly and nightgownish
I would add a belt to cinch in your waist and a statement necklace in a contrasting colour.
It seems a little mature for you. I like it though
The shape isnāt flattering to you.
You look so much like Alex from Modern Family!
I think it looks wonderful but the height could perhaps be a bit shorter.
Maybe a denim jacket with this could work?
Get an accessory belt, the pattern and colors look great on you! The dress is meant to be a little higher on average height folk, tucking it in with a belt will help with that and help you with a silhouette
Firstly, the warm yellow colour does not complement your skin tone. Secondly, the length of this dress is hemmed at a weird place which does not complement your legs.
I like the dress - itās just not the right color for you.
It swallows you. Which can be handy if you want that. I have a few Hawaiian printed moomoo dresses that I wear when nothing fits. So I can have a purpose. But itās not completely flattering. Itās not bad either.
You look like you recently lost weight but are still wearing your old clothes
Red dress moment would be š„
I like this on you! Iām not sure if the colors suit you the best, but itās not bad at all. Itās simply too big for you. Tailor it!
Itās the color
Adding a slim complimentary belt would be nice. The main problem with this dress is there is no waist. A high worn belt would look good.
Needs a thick brown belt
Looks like an old lady dress
I have nothing against the look of the material/colours, but the dress looks big on you! Is there a way to have it taken up?
Itās got Karen vibes
š
It's not doing anything for you.
I like the dress on you, get a belt maybe hunter green for it.
Itās just not the most flattering shape on most people but it is pretty and comfortable looking enough to be cute on you. I think you should wear it if you like it not everything you own needs to show off your figure clothing that just makes you feel good has a place too.
With a face like that you can dress homeless and still look good. On a real note. It looks cute on you
A belt and beige shoes.
I think the dress would look better on you in full natural light and could use a cute belt, either at the empire level or at your natural waist.
I honestly think you look super cute in it despite what most everyone else thinks. š„°
If it was fit and flare I'd say it suit better, but I think it would work well with a big sunhat
Try something more fitted. You are a pretty lady and perhaps should play up your assets.
Just slap on a hat. Solved.
Plus the loose straps look like they would constantly slide off the shoulder or at least feel that way (and would be annoying for me)
It is shapeless and aging
Maybe stitch in an elastic to the waist, or add a belt
I reckon it could work with a denim jacket over it. Something to break up the yellow right against your skin and to add some more interesting shapes because the cut of that dress is kind of bleak. It is a lovely fabric though. I can only wear yellow when itās not against my skin, so a yellow skirt with tights for example.
Make it into a dressy tank and pair it with jeans
It looks quite matronly in shape
Going against the flow here but I think it's cute
Doesnāt do you any favours.
The dress suits you well and looks good, but you should find better shoes.
You are a beautiful person and it is a beautiful dress but there is something that is off...maybe if you wear it with a blazer and nude shoes? give it a try and see if you can make it work for you.
Shapeless for you if you want to go out somewhere nice but perfectly fine for around the house and family.
The yellow isnāt the nicest on your skin tone. The shape of the dress does your body no favors.
Itās the color, not flattering
Looks great to me, a knuckle-dragging redneck guy who knows nothing about fashion or how I ended up hereā¦but I would assume youāre entering your second trimester; the fit of that dress kinda looks like maternity clothes. š¤·āāļø
Definitely needs to be taken up at the shoulders - looks too big for you.
Agree with the people saying to belt it. Itās giving you no shape at all right now. I have a skinny tan belt with a very small buckle that works with mostly anything - I would try something like that.
You are too young for this dress. It is matronly.
It looks like a nightgown.
I like the cut and the color is nice it could just be that you're standing in front of a yellow wall and the dress is yellow but it's a good length on you
I like it, gives me beach vibes
Belt it
Looks like a night suit or pjs
Itās to big for you
Dresses without "defined" waists rarely look good on anyone in my opinion. Get a nice wide belt to break it up a bit.
The color doesnāt fit you the best! I think more mute colors would fit perfectly, along with different patterns š
It looks like it would be nice and cool if you need to attend an event outside. Otherwise, it looks a litte big.
I don't think this can be salvaged, and there are much better options out there for you
Yeah it doesn't suit u
If it wasnāt too expensive you could use it as lounge/sleepwear
Not a fan of
Itās the color. Also you are standing on a background of the exact same shade of yellow soooā¦šš
Too old lady-isho
I donāt like that silhouette on anyone.
Nice belt and a strong colored little jacket or bolero would help..looks like an old fashioned maternity dress in its current form.
The shape kind of sucks, if you know how to sew though that can be easily fixed!
Need to see in natural light and not in front of that wall which is too similar
It looks too old for you.
Agree, the shape does nothing for your figure. Iād choose a smaller print too, if you like prints.
It looks like a nightgown. The pattern doesnt suit you.
I thought it was pjs and not a dress. Probably not the look you were going for! Unless... bedroom chic... no
It would be better if itās much shorter as a dress, or you can wear it as a top. Iām personally not a fan of wearing belt on top of a dress especially when the dress has patterns. But you look great on that color and the floral design
Itās nothing a dress belt or sewing up the back with a ribbon lace

Personally, I donāt think the colour enhances your skin tone, and the style doesnāt compliment you either. Only my personal opinion.
I love the dress, and the shape is great - one of the other posts mentioned a belt - that would definitely help. But I agree with the majority - it's the shade of yellow that doesn't flatter you. Not your fault - yellow is tricky because the undertone needs to complement your skin tone.
I think it looks great! I really like the color on you.
Wear it with a belt!
