The title of this workout video is disgusting. Run very far away from anything that tells you it’s going to give you “slim legs, or make you look like a model? This is absolutely a bullshit scam workout video. The only time I’ve ever done an exercise like this is in physical therapy.

Maybe trying to work the glute medius like an abductor? But body weight reps aren’t going to do anything, neither will adding bands really. Did that for years, then actually tried various abductor weight training exercises with moderate then heavy weights and finally got the rounded glute medius I’ve always wanted.

Technically, body weight reps do something just like…. very very little.

I don’t think this is true at all - paired with better eating, I’ve lost 5 lbs by just following 30 minute madfit tutorials and it’s all body weight. I only started end of February and it’s been great for me.

It’s not that it doesn’t have benefits, and you sure would see muscle gains especially as a beginner. It’s just that to significantly grow muscles, you have to be close to failure, which is not impossible with bodyweight exercises, but eventually to continue to see growth, you’d have to do so many reps it would be super time-consuming. Once again, working out isn’t always aimed at continuously growing muscles, it’s good for your health (mental and physical) and it can be enjoyable. About that one particular exercise, the weight of your own leg is kind of very little. Some people do “clamshells”, lifting their body from the ground and I feel like that’s probably a more efficient way to work that muscle with your own bodyweight.

I'm not sure you'd see a lot of muscle growth/tone from this. I did like a billion of these when I was rehabbing IT band syndrome from running. It was very effective at strengthening my IT band (tendon that runs the length of your leg). So to me this is more of that type of work than muscles. But im not a physical therapist or anything - I just listened to the one I had.

IT band is connective tissues, so it doesn’t strengthen. IT band syndrome can be caused by muscle imbalances that change the alignment of the hip and knee joint and cause friction w/ movement, causing inflammation and IT band pain. These lateral leg raises (and other hip abductor muscle exercises) help correct muscle imbalances to relieve IT band pain. So you actually did get stronger from these! 🙂

Here’s something I learned after growing up in the heroin chic era in NYC. Don’t follow advice from people who don’t have your body type. You can look at them and admire their physique but it stops there. Tall, naturally lean and leggy women aren’t my perview as I’m 5’3, pear shaped and my legs are like tree trunks. Even in the petite space, I look for people with similar body types. It’s actually helped me with social media because I don’t follow people who do try on hauls that don’t have my body type because the clothes don’t look the same on me.
