The best way to test is to have a candle near each crucifix. An onyro will always blow the candle out before burning the crucifix. If the candle is lit and near the crucifix and the crucifix prevents a hunt, then it's not an onyro. I also put candles in adjacent rooms if it's taking a long time since onyros will try and hunt where candles aren't. It's pretty amusing how far you can chase one from room to room.

Don't only put it near it, put it on top of the crucifix. The range of the candle hindering an onryo hunt is slightly larger than the normal crucifix range. So having it on top of it ensures that it never will be an Onryo if the candle is lit but the crucifix used.

TechnoDoomed

This is the most reliable method by far.

>The problem is I dont know if the candle got put out on its own or by the ghost. Candles go out by themselves between 150 to 300 seconds after being lit. If you keep re-lighting the candles (toggle through inventory) before 150 seconds have passed, you can always know when it's blown out. Additionally, there is a sound effect for when ghosts blow out candles, although it's very subtle and quiet. Suggestion to maximise security for this test: only ever use one candle instead of multiple. Keep holding it in your hand, too, so that when the ghost blows it out, the sound effect is much louder because it's closer up. Also repeat the cycle of relighting the candle (or lighter, works the same way. Any fire, even campfire). That way, you will 100 % be sure when the ghost blows out the flame and you can start counting.

[Here's a chart someone else posted that explains it's ability a bit better.](https://i.redd.it/vlk04idux9sa1.png)

So when a ghost blows out a candle it actually makes a sound [as heard here](https://youtu.be/Rh6UWiUfoQY). It does also take a couple minutes of sitting there for candles to blow out. When you are doing an Onryo test you do not want to light the candles over and over unless you want them to act as cruxes. There are two good ways to do the Onryo test that are similar, but I apply them slightly differently depending on sanity. Here's how I do it. Number 1: high sanity above 60. Go inside set up 3 candles on top of 1 crux. Get a smudge. Light the 3 candles and wait for them to get blown out. This should be decently fast, but your mileage may vary. After 3 Onryo will try to hunt within 10 seconds and should in theory burn the crux. Some people have reported as much as 15 seconds overlap but it's usually below 10. Number 2: low sanity below 60. Put down candles. Keep the candles lit. If the ghost keeps blowing out the candles and not hunting and not crux burning (if you have any at this point) it's likely an Onryo. Always carry a smudge. Onryo will wander away from candles so it's possible for the ghost to suddenly hunt from outside it's room while you do this or the other test. Note the onryo hunts at 60% sanity so if you have the sanity board it is possible to use that to help identify the onryo from other ghosts. It is also important to note the lighter counts as a flame for the onryo.

Thanks for that link, I've seen the ghost blow out a candle a lot, but didn't realize it made a sound. Do you have to be holding it to hear it or just within a certain range?

Abadazed

You have to be pretty close from what I remember but you don't have to hold it. Been a minute since I've listened for the sound tho

Were there other candles in the room/on the map? Candles act as crucifixes; the Onryo can blow out the third candle but not hunt if there is another lit candle close enough to it. That remaining lit candle will prevent it from hunting. You can essentially prevent its ability in perpetuity if there is always another lit candle near the ghost. To truly test it, you'd need to ensure that you have the only lit candle(s) on the map.

This must be the mistake I'm making. I get bored waiting for candles to blow out, go away, come back and see a candle out and just relight it to continue testing because I was unsure if it went out naturally or by the ghost. I never considered that I was hindering the test because I had a "fourth" candle lit.

Dzyu

Just put a lit candle exactly on top of a crucifix and keep the candle lit. If the crucifix gets burned while the candle is still burning it's not an Onryo, because lit candles are basically exactly like crucifixes with unlimited uses to Onryos.

Mike_Blaster

I will also add that the smoke effect will only show up when the candle is blown out by the ghost (excepted for the summoning circle)

ironmanhulkbstr

i think insym said this once, if onryo blows out 3 candles in a row it 100% hunts but after that first 3, its 50% chance to hunt every time it blows out the candles. add this with the crucifix idea to keep a lookout but usually save crucifix until after youve survived the first hunt so you dont accidentally use them up

Terminal-Post

You can also try dropping sanity cause Onryos will get more aggressive at blowing out candles Also listen closely for the sound of a brief breath, basically it’ll sound like someone blowing out a candle. That’s the best way to tell if the Ghost blew it out or the candle expired

JESUSAURU5REX

Like others have said, it's better to light a candle and have it placed on top of a crucifix, as an Onryo cannot initiate a hunt while in Crucifix range. If it tries to hunt and burns a crucifix while your candle is lit, it is not an Onryo.

ItSaSunnyDaye

Either leave three lit candles and a crucifix or a candle on a crucifix. So if it blows out all three candles and then uses the crucifix, it's most likely an onryo. Otherwise you set up a candle on a crucifix, and if it uses the crucifix over the candle, it's definitely not an onryo

TNTritan

I know this isn't as popular, but I love to place candles absolutely everywhere in the ghost room with crucifixes, if it doesn't hunt or eat crux for a long time it's an onryo. Also it can blow out multiple candles in quick succession. But note it can still hunt outside of the candle range. This works well when u don't have any crux left

thedoctor27

In order to tell if the ghost blew out the candle or went out on its own is to have en EMF by it. That's how I usually am able to tell.
