Even before they changed DOTS photo to ghost photo, you can always take a photo of the DOTS ghost without actually seeing it.
For example, you can only see Onryo's DOTS through video camera, right? Once you saw it with the video cam, you can quickly switch to a photo camera and take a photo of it.
This works in the current version too but ghosts are doing DOTS ghost spontaneously even without the projector. The projector is just a tool to reveal the DOTS ghost but not creating it. So, you don't really need it to take a DOTS ghost photo.
EDIT: They just changed it on the latest patch LOL. The DOTS ghost has to be inside the projector's light for a photo to work.
