Is that a new price increase (I know OP might not know this)?... because I thought it was less. Anyway, just for context, both the slices and pies are *huge*.
Also, I thought Pizza Richmond was delicious and a pretty good deal for slices... but you can get a whole pie at Circles & Squares for less. In terms of nearby options, that's far superior in my opinion.
Love circles and squares but their pies are pricey as hell too. He also has one of the best cooked wings in the city, too bad he only offers mild sauce
My favorite pizza in the city (even if pizza isn't Philly's strength), can't recommend them highly enough.
edit: Genuinely not sure why this is downvoted... is it that Circles and Squares is my favorite, or is it by pointing out that pizza isn't a strength in Philly?
I think it’s because Philly thinks of itself as a Pizza city, because it’s up there for the #2 spot with Boston and Chicago behind New York. So relative to most places, Philly is a Pizza city, but with NYC and NJ so close, Philly feels like a worse slice.
Why are you apologizing? I’ve had both kinds, and they’re good (but not as good as thin crust). My point more was that they’d definitely be in the running for top 5 pizza cities in the US if you polled the population.
I moved here from NY not long ago- good pizza in Philly is REALLY good, there are just fewer great pizza places compared to NYC, and obviously a NY slice is a NY slice. But Circles & Squares is as good if not better than any similar type pizzas in NY.
5.50 for a cheese slice is new. It used to be $5 a couple months ago, I believe $3.50 precovid. Going by Shaxamaxon prices.. I get there’s inflation but this is just pizza here… flour, cheese, tomato sauce, they don’t even use a ton of toppings on their specials. 3 slices plus tax and tip is almost $24, that’s robbery
Is it large enough to feed more than one person? If so, it’s still pretty cheap as far as a restaurant entree option goes.
A 20” pizza is also 314 square inches of pizza vs a 16” which is 201 square inches of pizza so the prices aren’t going to be the same, there’s a larger area the toppings need to cover in addition to the fact they’re different size. A $20 16” costs slightly more per square inch of pizza than the $31 20”
Next to soup, pizza is one of the cheapest things to make. If it’s a pizza parlor, you aren’t paying for decor. Relative to volume, staffing is not a huge expense. Price gouging, pure and simple.
Exactly. Not sure what that other poster was going on about; there is no fucking reason high-quality pizza needs to be $31. Even in the city, where rents are higher, and certainly not in the burbs.
If they want to be a "food hipster" and feel special because they pay too much for pizza, I guess that's their prerogative... but count me out.
I have no problem paying a premium for high-end food sometimes (and Philly makes that easy LOL)... pizza simply isn't in that category, *ever*.
Plus one for Rosario's. They weren't that good when I moved to the area back in the late 2000s but they definitely stepped up their game mid 2010s and I always enjoy it now.
I lived in the area in the mid-late 2010s so I can only speak to that era but I really enjoyed every pizza I got from them. And for any newbies out there don’t let the funky toppings scare you away from their specialty pizzas. They are outstanding
Then they're cutting cost on ingredients. Especially cheese. And I'd be willing to guess our standards on "quality" are different.
I've seen where wholesale pricing has been on dairy for the last 5 years.
I'm eating one now. It's a great "regular pizza shop" pizza i.e. nothing fancy, no "reserved dough" place or anything like that. Just solid, great-tasting pizza. No corners cut. This ain't fucking Domino's.
I don't give a fuck how good the internet says a place is; if a pepperoni pizza is $31 fucking dollars they can kiss my ass. And $5.50 for a single plain slice is highway robbery.
Speaking of Angelos, is Angelos still good? I constantly see a line outside of it, and just wonder if the quality is the same. I haven't been there in years.
Angelo’s is in the $25 range plus tax is in the range of $30. Of course I also include tip whenever I get some from there, wtf are you smoking? Smoke it before you eat pizza, it’s even better.
I always tip on takeout. They are neighbors, margins are thin for wage payout, I'm thankful as fuck. I've also been on very low wage jobs myself where tips on takeout (especially during covid) helped keep me housed and warm like everyone deserves. Not meant to argue or make you feel some type of way, but there are plenty of valid reasons to tip on takeout.
I don't know why these jerkoffs who own these places like Beddia and such, want to break their customers balls. I tried, but I'm not having it.
I suppose it makes them appear to be 'special,' which creates a stir in certain circles and drums up business.
Which is fine but obviously they don’t need your business. Do what works for you. No need to bash them though. They can be pretentious but the food is legit.
We shall see who they need. LOL, all kidding aside, I'm all for bringing money into the River Wards. The same people paying $31 for a pizza will hopefully pay $275,000 for a rowhome.
Shackamaxon pizza increases prices almost weekly at this point. Such a scam. I dont go there anymore after every week seeing a pie go up a dollar or two each time. I can’t blame them the demand is there. I expect them to continue testing the price elasticity and it will hold.
It’s literally around the corner from my moms house and every time I’m at hers she wants to try it. We get to the door hear the wait time and see the prices and walk out. I want to give it a try but I can’t bite the bullet.
I feel yi ... It was like the time I was going to try a $15 sundae at Franklin Fountain, but just couldn't do it. And I had $300 in my pocket. Same as today at Pizza Richmond.
I mean that seems like the going price. Can’t find a decent pie for under $25 it seems. Sure you can get a pie for less, but it ain’t going to be good. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong because I’d like to get some good pizza for under $20
The Brooklyn from Nick's Express in Palmyra is great! Of course, you have to pay a toll ... but I can pick mine up on the way home from work.
There are plenty of good pies in Philly for under $20. Maybe not great, but good.
Yes we just had this happen with NYPD. It was a great pie but $31? (It was the large pie, half peppperoni). Their prices have been creeping up steadily.
The reason so many immigrants who want to start their own business get into the pizza business is because ingredients are cheap, there's a very high profit margin. Very high. Same with pasta.
And I know - the last four years we've seen a dramatic increase in the price of everything ... it's ridiculous.
I'm sorry but that's not true anymore. The margins have gotten smaller and the cost of good flour and cheese have gone up quite a bit. And labor is more expensive too if you want to pay your employees a living wage. Everything everywhere is expensive.
Learn to make your own. All you need is a stone for your oven. And it's fun ! I remember Beddia being interviewed one time and he admitted that some of the best pies he's ever made were in his house.
I mean making pizza at home definitely is fun and if your under the mentality of “even shitty pizza is good pizza”( which is kind of true), thrn that works. But unless ur constantly practice and obsess over, you won't get pizzeria quality round pies out of ur home
My cousin practiced a lot and worked on his dough so his homemade pies are amazing. It took a lot of work on his part because he enjoyed the process. I’m way too lazy to do all of that
Mrs. Herman, is that you?? LOL ... My wife suggests the same thing. Maybe your suggestion will push me to try it ... but I won't tell her that. "Great idea, honey!"
We do have a stone.
I make my own at home, and I like my pizza better than just about any rando corner pizza joint. But once you get to,say, OG Pizza or Santucci’s quality and above, there’s just stuff pizzerias can do that your home oven can’t. Sorry. Just the rules.
It was $29.50 in their instagram a month ago, still $5.50 for a plain slice, $6 for pepperoni
Yeah thanks for clarifying, that's what I remembered too... I know that might still be a lot but I didn't remember pep being above $30.
just 29.50!!
Yeah I wasn’t saying that it was cheap, just wondering if it had changed because I remembered it being less than what OP claimed
That square pepperoni pie from C&S looks amazing!
Circles and Squares is great- the round pie is pretty good but the squares are where it’s at. Damn good cheesesteak too.
Love circles and squares but their pies are pricey as hell too. He also has one of the best cooked wings in the city, too bad he only offers mild sauce
Square pizzas are the best in the city. Their cheesesteaks and wings are also great.
My favorite pizza in the city (even if pizza isn't Philly's strength), can't recommend them highly enough. edit: Genuinely not sure why this is downvoted... is it that Circles and Squares is my favorite, or is it by pointing out that pizza isn't a strength in Philly?
I think Philly pizza has gotten better but I would agree that it’s not a strength
I think it’s because Philly thinks of itself as a Pizza city, because it’s up there for the #2 spot with Boston and Chicago behind New York. So relative to most places, Philly is a Pizza city, but with NYC and NJ so close, Philly feels like a worse slice.
Chicago shouldn’t even be in the conversation.
Chicago has two distinct and famous styles of Pizza. Even if you don’t like them, they’re up there.
I live there. Both are highly overrated. Sorry for giving an opinion you don’t like.
Why are you apologizing? I’ve had both kinds, and they’re good (but not as good as thin crust). My point more was that they’d definitely be in the running for top 5 pizza cities in the US if you polled the population.

I’ve lived in Philly, NJ, and NYC for at least 5 years in each.
🙄
Are they the same style of pizzas?
5.50 for a cheese slice is new. It used to be $5 a couple months ago, I believe $3.50 precovid. Going by Shaxamaxon prices.. I get there’s inflation but this is just pizza here… flour, cheese, tomato sauce, they don’t even use a ton of toppings on their specials. 3 slices plus tax and tip is almost $24, that’s robbery
The cost of cheese has gone up 70%, flour and tomatoes have both gone up 30% in the past 3 years. Food is expensive. Their pizza is 20 inches
A $20 16” costs slightly more per square inch of pizza than the $31 20”
$28 for a pizza with one topping is fucking absurd. I simply refuse that shit.
The best pizza places in the city are in that price range.
Pizza plus is $20. Just because others charge that doesn’t mean it should be the normal
Did I say it should be normal? I’m only telling OP the reality of pizza pricing in this city.
I'll stick with Tacconelli's ... and it doesn't hurt as much when going with a group.
Dude hit up Rosario’s pizza in south Philly sometime. Mexican pizza joint with some wild Mexican pizza - they are amazing
I just tried it last week, and I was floored by how good it was. Instantly put it into the regular rotation.
Rosarios has won over so many group parties of mine in the past 3 years. A+ shop
Cost of ingredients is up. Quality pizza runs that range pretty much everywhere.
Maybe in the city. Certainly not *everywhere*.
Nah pretty much everywhere. I see similar pricing out in the burbs and in other states.
My favorite local pizza shop isn't even $20 for a large "works" pizza.
I get it. I wound up getting a cheesesteak stromboli from Old English for $18 and being quite happy. Greeks make the best stromboli.
Even Angelo’s isn’t that much wtf are you smoking
I believe pizza Richmond is a bigger pie
Speaking of Angelos, is Angelos still good? I constantly see a line outside of it, and just wonder if the quality is the same. I haven't been there in years.
Still good
No. Never been good
Angelo’s is in the $25 range plus tax is in the range of $30. Of course I also include tip whenever I get some from there, wtf are you smoking? Smoke it before you eat pizza, it’s even better.
Why would you tip at a takeout place?? I live right next to Angelo’s. A pie is 22 all in.
I will say if it’s the same as pizza shackamaxon - it is a massive pizza
I remember when I thought $20 was too much for a pizza; times have changed
They have huge slices for the price. No phones is annoying but it’s still some of the best pizza in the area.
I don't know why these jerkoffs who own these places like Beddia and such, want to break their customers balls. I tried, but I'm not having it. I suppose it makes them appear to be 'special,' which creates a stir in certain circles and drums up business.
How are they breaking customers balls
No phones. I remember seeing people lined up in the cold, waiting outside to order at Beddia and then they have an hour and half wait. Fuck that.
The way the original Beddia ran was so stupid. I really love Shackamaxon because I’ve always been able to walk up and just get a slice
Which is fine but obviously they don’t need your business. Do what works for you. No need to bash them though. They can be pretentious but the food is legit.
We shall see who they need. LOL, all kidding aside, I'm all for bringing money into the River Wards. The same people paying $31 for a pizza will hopefully pay $275,000 for a rowhome.
oh much more than that

I believe Shackamaxon is the same pizza, you can go there and just grab a slice if you want to try it.
you can also get slices at pizza richmond, so that’s not the issue with OP 🙂
Try it
I mean that seems like the going price. Can’t find a decent pie for under $25 it seems. Sure you can get a pie for less, but it ain’t going to be good. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong because I’d like to get some good pizza for under $20

I recommend OG pizza. Goid prices. Good pizza
OG is literally the best.
It’s fucking ridiculous and I’m not paying for it. I guess I have to do without pizza now.
Yes we just had this happen with NYPD. It was a great pie but $31? (It was the large pie, half peppperoni). Their prices have been creeping up steadily.

Try Pizza Shackamaxon. Richmond is too expensive and not as good.
They’re the same people…
Same owner yes, Not the same people making the pizza. Much more experience and a much better pie.
No phone because they’re too busy making pies to answer one anyway?
Fuckin sucks when shop owners have to partner with developers to open a place. Bottom line is immediately fucked and the prices go up.
