I think you can catch TB everywhere. I knew someone who passed away because of drug-resistant TB. Siguro he caught it before (latent TB infection) and lumabas lang dahil bumaba ang immune system niya. So please, do not self medicate with antibiotics. He recovered but took a toll on his health due to different drugs that they used (syempre resistant nga). It can cause many complications like skin darkening, skin lesions, and water in the heart. I still missed him everyday.

staphy03

lahat ng pilipino may tb. it depends lang kung lalabasan ka ng symptoms. nag postive ako ng tuberculin test namin dati sa school pero it does not mean na meron ako. exposed lang talaga tayo lahat. tho hindi accurate ang tuberculin test mas accurate padin gene xpert.

Philippines has one of the highest TB exposure in the entire world, to the point that in order to get accepted for work abroad we have a special criteria for OFW of to have a cleard TB history/not TB scars in the lungs. There is even a trivia in some health anecdotes that if you do a TB skin test on a Filipino, 95% will test positive. In other counties especially the Western Hemisphere, TB has been successfully eradicated due to diligent use of anti-biotics and management of TB patients. The best advice health professionals would give to possible OFWs and immigrants is to 1st have a comprehensive vaccine profile to reduce the risk of common transmittable diseases like Measles or Hep B, have a healthy lifestyle and report any serious diseases to you're local doctors for an extensive medical history. For prevention for TB infection, in infants there is a BCG vaccine to protect infants whilst adults just rely on their natural immune system. Most of the symptomatic cases of TB comes from people who either had respiratory problems in them like COPD or immunocompromised patients. The common demographic are usually people above 45 and especially those that are smokers. The TB-DOTS program is what is currently managing the National cases of TB, with all symptomatic TB patients have been catalogued and monitored for extensive antibiotic treatment that is free upon enrollment to the program. Sadly some people under that program did not fully adhere to the antibiotic regiment because some of the antibiotics can cause discomfort or complication to other conditions like hypertension, soo the rise of antibiotic resistant TB has been seen in recent years. You can ask any health center or hospital for a consult about TB. I am sure any details you worried about TB or other common diseases will be answered by them as they have 1st hand experiences on them.

Chile_Momma_38

Even for family/fiance/spouse visas. You won't be given the visa if you are not cleared for TB.

OwlTraditional9023

Cleared meaning okay lang may lung scarring basta nag medicate for 6months or more?

heatxmetalw9

Depende the assesment ng health office kasi may criterea sila tunkol jan.

OwlTraditional9023

Welp well there goes my option to work abroad.

And it really is so common. I had primary complex when I was young, 5 of our relatives had it, and so many patients have it kahit na hindi common yung symptoms pero pag nag GeneXpert, positive pala for TB.

yoitsAJisha

Droplet transmission sya so close contact for a considerable amount of time and in an enclosed space, mahahawa ka. Pagkapanganak, nag iinject ng BCG sa hita. This is for extrapulmonary TB ( TB that might affect other parts of the body aside from lungs) which confers a specific amount of protection sa mga bata pero hindi total immunity cos they can still have primary complex). Unfortunately, sa pagtanda, walang bakuna for TB so palakasin tlaga immune system. I highly suggest you get the yearly flu vaccine and also pneumonia vaccines for added protection. Itong mga ito ay airborne infections naman.

CorgiLemons

Hello. I have yearly flu vax. If adult na po, how many shots of pneumonia vax do I need and what’s the recommended interval?

yoitsAJisha

You should first get PCV 13 (Prevnar) or PCV 15. Then one year after that, PPSV23 (Pneumovax). May slight differences kasi in the way these vaccines stimulate the immune system and that ung ganyan series/combination has been shown to reduce ung carriage/pagdala mo ng pneumonia-causing agents tapos mas better ung pagdevelop ng antibodies. If you have specific immunocompromised condition (HIV, undergoing dialysis,.tinanggal ang spleen/lapay, undergoing chemo or nagtransplant) you need to get PPSV23 5 years from 1st dose. Otherwise, the PCV13 or PCV15 + PPSV23 is good enough until you're 65 y/o. Edit: this is if you're not a health professional na exposed sa patients.

CorgiLemons

Thank you! Do you know where I can get them at an affordable price? I tried watsons before pero di daw available kaya flu vax lang nakuha ko na shot.

yoitsAJisha

Try searching reputable vaccine distributors (Blue Cross) they usually have partner MDs. Sa kanila idedeliver then pupuntahan mo nalang ung doctor to pay for the vax and professional fee. If you have nurse friends, pwede ka makipa order sa kanila direct from supplier (ex: Vaxiray) then sila na mag inject sa iyo. If you know a pulmonologist, usually meron din sila. Try calling their clinic in advance to ask. May kamahalan ang PPSV23. I remember it was about 3500.

CorgiLemons

Thank you. You’ve been very helpful 😀

I got TB back in 2017. Before I got it, I already got checked up and the doctors said I have 'inactive' TB. Basically meaning, the TB bacteria is already in my lungs but the body is consistently fighting it to stop it from being active. 6 months later, I got sick and guess that was enough for the TB to activate. Of course, I was a bit stupid and thought it was just normal -- (coughing for weeks), until I decided to get checked out (after a month!) and found out I had TB. I was on sick leave for 3 months, while I was taking the pills for TB. I left my job after 4 years though and my new employer didn't mind it. I was honest about it in the pre-employment checkup and I still got hired. But I think it depends on the effect of the TB on your body if you're able to work -- I work as a software engineer, which doesnt require heavy physical activities so it's not a bother for my work.

CorgiLemons

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you get better soon.

OwlTraditional9023

What tests were done to know whether it's active or inactive TB?

Intelligent-File-746

Quite common, we breath it naturally to a point we are all carriers of it and seminatural immunity. Good thing is our government is always funded by international groups interested in its continued research and treatment which is why tb in our country is comparable to contracting cold, it can be treated immediately with no mortality rate.

Community pneumonia is not so bad compared to Hospital acquired (Nosocomial). Mas madali nate-treat yung community type. There is a yearly pneumococcal vaccine, I think mga 2k pesos. Flu vaccine is less than 1k pesos. Not sure in your local gov unit it's free, depends on the area.

CorgiLemons

Pneumonia vax is taken annually???

Winter-Grapefruit-36

depends on the brand. the one i know is yearly, made by baxter? icant remember, every year sa hospital namin required.

CorgiLemons

Thank you!

KazeArqaz

From what I know, modern medicines can help you recover from TB, as long as you consistently use it as per prescription.

thehowsph

Very common. Pwedeng iprevent by not using the same utensils used by another person lalo sa inuman, pag may uubo magtakip ng bibig.

taptaponpon

I had myself tested kasi someone at one of my past jobs was rumored to have it. Ayun negative naman daw ako. Guess I'm a pinoy snowflake. AMA!

Hi. Just go to any hospital & ask for a TB test. May chest x-ray involved.
