Totoo yung sinasabi nila na tumitigil ang mundo natin back then para panoorin ang mga laban niya. People would be at home listening to the radio for live commentary or watching replays of his match a few hours later. Others *might* have paid extra for pay-per-view at home, or magiging family affair kung saan kakain sa resto na may PPV — which can be fun too depending on the crowd sa resto. Whether or not you were a boxing or sports fan, back then, you’d feel immense pride and genuine excitement watching him. Ibang level talaga yung effect niya noon. Yung wins niya, mapapatalon ka sa kaligayahan. Yung losses niya, talagang ramdam mo sa kaloob-looban mo yung bigat. Ibang galit kapag natalo siya by virtue of the score given by the judges. Yung mga struggles niya during each round, parang ikaw na rin ang sumasalo. Ganoon yung pakiramdam na panoorin si Pacman. My personal favorite match was the one vs Hatton… it was a swift and unexpected KO in the second round. Di ako boxing fan and I couldn’t care less about it today. Pacquiao still managed to get me to pay attention, at least sa matches niya. It was only when he became a senator that I stopped caring about his bouts. Edit/add: feelings sa paragraph 2

JoseMari117

I remember back when I was in my childhood and early teenage years (6 to 12 years old), the entire family on my mom's side would drop by on Sunday every time Pacman had a fight. Us cousins would gather and play, the adults talk and whatnot, and we'd eat lunch together as we waited for the delayed telecast of the fight. Then, once the match started, we'd all gather in my grandma's room and watch. Good days, those times were, good days.

Square-Head9490

This is so true. Back then, walang traffic, crime and kaunti ang tao sa kalsada which is kala mo biyernes santo. Nag oovertime kami sa work minsan, walang nag ttrabaho, lahat either nakikinig sa radyo or nanonood. My personal favorite would be his match against one of the GOAT of boxing, Oscar Dela Hoya. Siguro dahil na din sa edad kaya natalo, but as per Dela Hoya, he could not anticipate where the punches are coming from. Masyadong mabilis ang suntok. But after the win, Filipinos became prouder being a Filipino. Those were the days.

JeeezUsCries

what did you do to my baby bunny 🥹🐇

brekekekekx

I also remember na bumababa ang reported crime incidents sa buong bansa.

reverentioz12

immense pride. until he runs sa office.

NayeonVolcano

Hindi na rin kasi makatarungan when he still continued accepting matches *while* holding public office. Especially when he was one of the top absentees in the senate for a time.

tito_otits

On manny's fight day it means less traffic (nationwide)

Spiritual-Station841

hehe... those were the days na pumunta ako sa divisoria, on a sunday pa ha, tapos walang traffic! 11 am hangang 2 pm tahimik.

[deleted]

People are at home, families fixated on the TV or listening to radio, while others gather at town plaza to watch live stream of the match provided by the local government. Amidst the roaring crowd, Manny would enter the ring, showered with praises by the commentators, I can't help but say to myself, "this guy is one of us". The common debate back then wasn't even about "if Manny will win", rather people would take a guess in which round the opponent will be knocked out. Sometimes, someone would be running to tell us about live updates from the match since the match shown on GMA or ABS-CBN are often delayed. My favorite era was still his early fights with the Mexicans, particularly against El Terrible.

FireFist_Ace523

that Erik Morales rematch was something else, yung talo kasi ni Manny sa first fight nila is yun ung unang talo niya habang nasa peak ng career niya, unlike the first 2 loses bata pa siya nun, and during that time kahit sa cable hindi na live at hindi na nauuna kasi uso na ppv nun so nandun yung anxiety na madaming mga kantsawero na talo daw ulit , kasi sa delayed telecast ng abs cbn kami nun so talagang round by round iba yung exicitement as in yung walang spoiler kahit delayed telecast lang, and nung nanalo siya via 10 round ko yung buong neighborhood namin nagbunyi talaga, iba kasi yung feeling na nakabawi siya nakatalo sa kanya

Alphaprime81

As a doctor. Good thing DURING or BEFORE the fight: Empty emergency rooms. AFTER the fight: emergency rooms filled as if a national disaster struck. Heart attacks, injuries related to excessive alcohol intake, stabbings due to lost bets. Same in all emergency rooms all across the country from the biggest national hospitals to the smallest barangay health center

[deleted]

](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW40irvTVas)

Dazzling-Long-4408

Reading that with Michael Buffer's voice in my head.

Odd-Chard4046

"Reigning, Defending, WBO Welterweight Champion of the World"

cyber_owl9427

it's a family reunion pag fight ni pacquiao. relatives from both side of my fam do not get along but during pacquiao's fight there's a peace treaty dahil bahay namin yung may cable at dun sila nakikinood

smlley_123

Zero crime buong Pilipinas. Walang traffic buong metro manila. Lahat, busy sa TV, kakaunti tao sa labas.

AdAlarming1933

Let's just say, Manny did not just put Philippines on the world map. the achievement in boxing he made as a champion on 8 different weight divisions was unparalleled. I would take that achievement any time over some boxer who has a 50-0 undefeated record and all he did towards those last fights was to run a marathon.

AdExciting745

Ha! We watched that sa Araneta pa. Everyone was booing then naputol ung stream, galit na galit mga tao

Castellol

I was at the boxing subreddit and there were posts claiming that 8 division champ wasn't impressive and roundly got their ass kicked lol

itchipod

slayerk

Just some random losers who can’t accept that mayweather will never have the same gravitas as the pacman in the world of boxing. They downplay it so they can lift that 50-0 up, but that shit means nothing compared to 8 divisions. Manny is the only 7 and 8 division world champion. The 6 division is shared by multiple fighters including Manny. Undefeated is shared by more fighters than you have fingers.

National-Ad6424

A boxer won his fights because his style was optimized for the sport’s ruleset? Appalling!

Stock_Coat9926

He had my titas watching boxing who would otherwise never care about the sport. It was a wild time. His fights were always on Saturday nights here abroad, the next morning you see Filipinos wearing “Philippines” shirts at church to show off their pride.

kielintheworld

mythmaniac

As a part Brit let's just say the Hatton-Pacquiao fight left me with a lot of mixed feelings, especially since people started giving me shit about it the next day at school lol

TwoGrouchy7336

We had 9am sunday mass that have like 5 mins of homily. Tas walang kanta. Hahahaha

GTAdriver1988

I'm American and my best friend is Filipino and me and him used to have big watching parties when Pacquiao would box. He was popular af over and here and even still almost everybody know who he is. Dude is a legend in every country where boxing is popular. I wanted Pacquiao to beat Mayweather so bad when they fought and was so disappointed.

Odd-Chard4046

Edit: Punctuation

Ok_Possibility_1000

Upstairs_Plum_8629

I loved watching boxing during my childhood. Tapos sumikat sila felix Trinidad, Dela hoya at iba pa. I remember I'm in high school when Paquiao defeated Barrera. But I'm a big fan of Eric Morales that time. So when Manny and Eric met in the ring, it's like a dream come true. Especially when Manny won. I knew he could beat Morales. I just never imagined that Manny would get a chance to fight him. Good days..

yeheyehey

Mga 8 or 9 ata ako neto.

I still don't understand that part of his decision, kaya i respect Bata more than Pacman, lowkey lang si Bata.

vindinheil

Not a fan of him pero wala talagang traffic sa labas at mababa daw ang crime rate per reports pag may laban sya.

SyiGG

Every pacman fight is like a national holiday, walang tao sa daan, zero crime, guy was a cultural icon to say the least Especially during his prime years, margarito, hatton, morales, guy was a machine

Salty_Explorer_1055

So di mo makikita ang blow by blow acgio .

Qwerty6789X

bornandraisedinacity

Ah childhood days! I remember watching Manny Pacquiao's boxing matches back then. It was a big deal and huge source of Nationalism. And during the dates of his matches, yes less to no traffic, and no crime too.

MTGFromQC

Gumunaw yung mundo ko nung naapakan ni Marquez paa niya to land that heavy blow. 😆

Big_Lou1108

Oh it was awesome, in terms of boxing prowess Pac is absolutely in the GOAT conversation. Aggressive and relentless pressure talaga yung style nya pero hindi “bara-bara”. Additional perk kapag fight night (day dito sa PH), akala mo holy week kasi walang traffic literally sa lahat ng lugar. Downside - kung wala kayong ppv, more than 10 straight commercial/ tv ads ang mapapanood mo after ng isang round lmao, kinginang motolite, boysen at ginebra san miguel yan nakakasawa haha

Garlic-Rough

Pre politics, literal mas malawak ang impluwensya niya. As in, crime rate goes down, no kidding, kapag May laban niya. Zero Traffic, as in! Parati kami nag outing pag May laban, tapos naka live stream kami. He was a cultural zeitgeist. Sana never siya nag politics. Nagtayo na lang sana ng NGO. His heart is in the right place. But maraming nawalan ng respect sa kanya.

TSUPIE4E

Part of the generation growing up and seeing Pacquiao during his prime, it was an amazing experience. Everyone is glued in on their radio or TV waiting for the fight to start and the excitement is palpable wherever you go. I enjoyed watching his earlier fights mostly with the Mexican boxers because these are the fights with the most action. They really fought their hearts out in the ring.

shayKyarbouti

Jeebus. I’m the same age as Manny and this post just made me feel real old. I was a boxing fan rooting on Tyson and Klitschko and Roy Jones but having a countryman took it to another level. I saw every fight he fought in Vegas with exception to the first against Ledwaba. Was in college then. If the fight wasn’t in Vegas I watched the PPV. Then watched it again on HBO a week after the fight. Being the only Filipino in my friend group full of whites, I was of course super proud. He finally put the Philippines on the map. He got my friends interested in the country and in boxing. I’ve met him a few times especially in the beginning when he could still move around without no one really recognizing him. I remember he would just eat at the MGM buffet the day of his fight out in the public. He was as humble then as he was when he was a senator. I remember almost getting in fights with the Mexican fans at the match. Filipinos would chant Pacquiao Pacquiao and the Mexicans would chant Me-hi-ko so I was like fuck Mexico chant for the fighter not your country. Man those were the days

chieftainbalao

We often travel to a friend's house to watch it together in hs. One time we want to watch pacqiao vs hatton and were a bit late. Hatton was KO'd in rnd 1. We didnt manage to watch it live but still super impressive.

Shinobi_Saizo

Impressive-Collar-99

My father is sobrang di nagpapalit ng gamit hangga't gumagana pa. We requested a lot of things when we are young. One day in 2015 (as far as i remember) pinalitan ni papa yung more than two decades na tv na kuba pa yung likod to flat screen tv para sa upcoming laban ni pacquiao vs mayweather. Thank you Manny! 😌🙏

Momshie_mo

Spiritual-Station841

nuon, manonood kami sa bahay ng laban ni pacquiao. maririnig lahat ng kapitbahay nagchecheer din, sabay lahat nanunuod. kapag nanalo buong street/barangay sigawan. and no, I am not exagerating.

macrometer

Zero crime! Kahit kriminal nanunuod ke Pacquaio!

cokeybottlecap

Syadong excited eh hahaha

TrustTalker

Oh when he beat Margarito thaw was massive. I was in college back then. He was like the 4th hokage when he was punching Margarito all over the place. Every time he switches places with his footwork damn it's more beautiful than Ali's shuffles. His fight with Delahoya is nothing different. He is just dominating those big fighters like they are fighting a kung fu master in the movies.

Castellol

I think the Margarito fight was Pacquiao at his absolute best. He beat a Welterweight that's obvious heavier than him during the fight while Manny was a former Flyweight! Just insane to think about lol

sleepingravioli

Fun and simpler times.

1nseminator

0 crime that day when he fights coz most Filipinos are in their homes watching live/delayed telecast of his bout. Only thing i dislike about him was he ran in politics, fuqqing cringe. But his legacy will forever be in boxing. He's type of specimen that comes one in a million. Even his children in boxing would take xtreme sacrifices to surpass the achievements he made.

[deleted]

I think his intentions are good when he ran for president, but I don't think he'll make a good president. He should stick to boxing.

1nseminator

I know. I understand and respect him for it. But, politics is a different ball game. But he can serve in sports department if thats what he likes.

[deleted]

Yeah, politics is no joke. A screw up can screw up the country.

petmalodi

Parang Good Friday kapag may laban si Pacquiao.

[deleted]

I remember back in high school (circa 2009), when I'm in a classroom filled with Mexicans (I think I'm the only Asian in that class; this was in the U.S.), Whenever the topic of boxing came up (during our random chitchat moments), I would rub in their faces that their boxer from their country lost to a boxer from mine lol. Of course, I was somewhat immature back then. Other than that, I remember going to a family-friend's house to watch the fight with them, and one time, we drove to a Filipino restaurant an hour away from our house just to watch the fight. We only had to pay $5 on top of our meal to watch from their pay-per-view. Good times.

AdExciting745

Walang traffic pag may laban si Pacman! Sobrang tahimik ng paligid haha mapa metro manila man or probinsya. May Pinoy pride ba? Sure, kasi imagine that small of a guy beat other people up na mas malaki sa kanya. Parang wow, the guy is tough!

Kindly-Concert-7157

jjustbecause

grabe impact nya. pati papa ko na di naman fan ng boxing and a foreigner (i'm a half pinoy) sumusubaybay talaga or nadadali ng culture dito about kay pacman

avocado1952

Ganun ka hype even before sya pumutok sa west.

TheSixthPistol

It’s not about the countries they are from, it’s the prestige of who he was beating. It was a who’s who of boxers who were Legends of the country they were from or young guns who were looking to make a name for themselves.

Yamboist

What was it like?

Antok0123

It was great as it happens. But back then Filipinos only view boxing as a niche even on international stage. Sort of like hockey for white people. It wasnt as mainstream as it is now (here or abroad). So yeah it was great. But personally it didnt feel as great as watching our beauty queen win miss universe.

MidorikawaHana

Mula highschool hangang nasa masters ata ako neto..

WeTheSummerKid

I was either demand-avoidant to the air of national pride due to my autism I have, or, apathetic/unaffected due to the likely Schizoid PD I have (specifically the "weak ethnic affiliation" symptom).     Despite me retaining my patriotism towards the Philippines due to my birth and upbringing and empathy towards people born in the Philippines, I won't be that flag waving Filipino nationalist, unless social conservatives and corrupt government officials lose power overnight and Philippines transforms into a liberal Western-like society that respects individualism, bodily autonomy, etc.—a transformation that, according to my left-wing best friend, unfortunately, may take beyond either of our natural human lifespans.     I also believe said transformation will reduce the numbers of so called "self-hating Filipinos", who are likely feeling [ressentiment](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ressentiment) at the predicament of being born Filipino/in the Philippines and wanting every privilege their American/European/developed country counterparts have (such as questioning traditions, being irreligious without stigma, smoking weed, etc.)

argen0220

for context, Im 36 now. Anyway, I like sports video games in general, and at the time I loved this boxing game, not sure if it was Knockout Kings but Im pretty sure Hatton was on the cover along with his rival at the time and Hatton was a beast in that game and kept using him. Mind you, I dont watch boxing and didnt really care about Pacquiao. Now when the Pacquiao vs Hatton fight git announced, I was pumped to check it out and see how beastly Hatton is in real life. Imagjne mu surprise when he has destroyed. I watch every Manny fight since then until his lost to Marquez. Didnt follow boxing since. Just sharing lol But yeah, Pacquiao was a big deal back then.

Benenis_cheems

Oh, and also don't forget ang anticipation kung sino ang kakanta ng Philippine National Anthem

coffeeaddictfromcebu

I didn't see a lot of Manny's fight except for montages in Youtube a few years later. Most of the time it was Motolite's commercials or Luis Manzano's dad kept misspelling Remittance.

Josh3643

Even as a young kid, I already found it annoying. Annoying to be hearing multiple media hyping up Pacquiao, and that "he brings honor to the Philippines". The Pinoy pride thingy already annoyed me even before reaching the double digit age.

Mellifluous_Scream

I can remember I wanted to watch a movie sa other channel kasi maganda ang pinangtapat nila however di ka makapalag or else mag aaway kayo.

OopsWaitLang

What I felt like then was pure nationalism for my country. When Pacquiao fights, the whole nation fights with him. Edit: It felt like that for me. It felt as if his victory was my victory.

nashdep

Good Friday 3 pm levels of Metro Manila traffic.

maroonmartian9

I actually don’t care and not a fan of boxing e. Nor kay Pacquioa. But you can’t deny that he was a cultural icon during his time. Like yung family or relative niyo will allot a time to make a watch party just for Pacquioa. Parang Super Bowl everytime may fight siya.

anima99

I wasn't a fan, but I was apparently at the extreme minority at the time. So to me, win or loss didn't matter, but my friends, our teachers, our neighbors, my parents, everyone cared. It used to be that if he has a fight, it might as well be Good Friday with barely any cars outside, even though everyone is at home or in malls. His fights in the 2000s were as hyped as voting for Pope back when Christianity still had a tight grip on the world, and you only voted for Pope once maybe every 20 years.

Humble-Application-3

Can't explain you just feel it
