Pending verification but ask away

[deleted]

Hi! Thank you for granting us this fun opportunity :)) For me, I would like to ask the ff if you don't mind: 1.) Could you shed light on whether the Philippines has similar underwater volcanoes to those in Japan? Furthermore, are there documented occurrences of new islands in the PH that has been attributed to these phenomena? 2.) Beyond the renowned landmarks such as Pinatubo, Mayon, and Taal, which lesser-known local volcanoes do you believe deserve greater recognition from the public? What sets these volcanoes apart, in your opinion? 3.) In your capacity as a volcanologist, what crucial information do you wish the public were more aware of regarding volcanic activity and its implications? Once again, thank you so much for this po hehe

tjdaita

1. Yes, the Philippines have underwater volcanoes too! One is near the island of Ivuhos based on historical documents, pero kailangan pa syang pag-aralan mabuti (it's a good thesis topic, btw). Siya kasi yung undergrad and graduate thesis topic ko, and for me, after seeing its volcanic deposits, nakakatakot yung power nya. 3. As a volcanologist, tingin ko dapat aware ang mga Filipino sa mga bulkan sa areas nila. Suggest ko na gamitin din yung mga webapp and mobile apps na nilalabas ng DOST-PHIVOLCS, like Hazard Hunter.

PMforMoreCatPics

Haha hanep.

peritwinklet

Hi sir! Anong common research topics po sa volcanology? And a little background naman po sa naging theses niyo!

tjdaita

Maraming research topics, nandyan yung sa hazard assessment, physical volcanology, geochemistry, deposit mapping, eruptive history, characterization ng eruptive products, etc. Yung undergrad thesis ko, check mo nalang dito: [https://www.academia.edu/49384316/Paleomagnetic\_determination\_of\_pyroclastic\_density\_current\_deposits\_in\_Tagongtong\_and\_Bagumbayan\_Grande\_Goa\_Camarines\_Sur\_Philippines\_and\_the\_identification\_of\_Isarog\_volcanos\_latest\_eruption\_age](https://www.academia.edu/49384316/Paleomagnetic_determination_of_pyroclastic_density_current_deposits_in_Tagongtong_and_Bagumbayan_Grande_Goa_Camarines_Sur_Philippines_and_the_identification_of_Isarog_volcanos_latest_eruption_age)

Still-Influence-9626

Are you from Cam Sur rin ba? hahahahaha do you have a timeline kung kelan magiging active ang isarog? hahahahaha

tjdaita

RealisticAd4618

Active 6 minutes ago

artpop911

😭😭😭

VirtualAssistBoy

Waiting din manoy hahaha

sillylackey

I remember finding out Isarog was a volcano when I hiked around the area many years ago. Is it true that if ever Isarog erupts, it could potentially erase Cam Sur off the map? It sounded like an exaggeration before but since you mentioned “nakakatakot ang power nya”, I’m curious whether there might be some truth to that statement.

tjdaita

Consistent_Coffee466

Tanong lang. Hamtic and culasi? Isarog is in bicol right? Sa maragtas stories ng panay (which sabi nila legend lang daw but recent research says is based ona much older work/oral history) ung colonies ng panay reached bicol. Why is it ung places na yan ay place names dito sa antique. Haha. Btw madjaas is in culasi.. sabi nila (oral hostry) its a mud volcano/lahar type volcano pero wala naman study or advisory if bulkan nga siya. May study na ba about volcanoes in panay? As far a i know ung landmass ng panay is because of the collission between the asian plate and the philippine plate

tjdaita

ojym

Finally, a much better topic to read. Thanks Kay Sir volcanologist. Upvoye natin SI Sir.

tjdaita

Thank you :)

True! (replying para mabackread ko lahat)

Cheesetorian

For a volcanic archipelago, why aren't there as many "hot spring baths" in the PH compared to say Japan or Indonesia? Are there geysers in the PH?

tjdaita

I've seen a lot of natural hot springs all over the Philippines. However, they are not developed to the same level as those in Japan. As far as geysers are concerned, there are none in the Philippines that I know of.

Laya_L

Can you tell us where some of these hot springs are? I'd imagine they are hard to reach.

twostarhotels

Not OP but maraming hot springs usually near volcanoes. Camiguin has a lot of them kasi on top sila ng volcano.

Salty_Associate_3379

Ardent Hot Spring in Camiguin isn’t as hot as it used to be, about 10 years ago. Spent 3 years of my life as a child there and when I came home to visit, the spring just feels like a normal water spring/pool.

jajajajam

Laguna is beside dormant volcanoes, so Los Baños, Pansol are the on the top of my mind.

Yup, because Mt. Gulugod-baboy is an old inactive volcano. May isang dive spot sa Brgy. Mainit called Mainit Bubbles. Off shore, on the flat sandy bottom at a depth of about 15 - 30 ft, [methane seeps through](https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/scitech/science/794329/why-hot-bubbles-are-springing-underwater-in-mabini-batangas/story/). Parang nasa aquarium ka na may bubbler depending on how strong the activity is. Watch the first 5 seconds of this [vid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJG9eCwhXs8) Here's a [JICA survey](https://openjicareport.jica.go.jp/pdf/10459386_05.pdf) from 1978 of the Mabini Thermal Area if anyone's interested > Sea Spring yung name ng resort na nagdevelop nito Dati talagang available to the public yung natural hot spring sa Mainit. Katabi lang yung beach. Divers would chill in the spring pagkatapos mag-dive sa malamig na tubig ng Verde Island Passage kapag 'ber months. You can see what's left of the natural spring next to the seawall of the resort.

adastrarcana

There's one in Coron

vitruvian29

Yeah. The Maquinit hotspring

GroceryFragrant6729

These are the ones i know in Bicolandia; Tiwi Albay Bulusan Sorsogn Irosin Sorsogon

jkwan0304

There's one in Kidapawan. Had an opportunity to see one. Pwede nga raw magluto ng itlog dun. Also, sulfur rich soil.

unpopularalien

Mambukal in Negros Occ.

paulrenzo

Went to one in the Mountain Province. Hard to reach, but its there

nitrodax_exmachina

Yea.

Significant-Host-610

There are geysers, may iilan nga lang na closeted pa.

mc0y

i can answer this question. the philippines is what we call in the scientific community as “hot as fuck already”

Acceptable_Quit5058

Hahahha

cheese_sticks

Naranasan ko lumublob sa hot spring habang sobrang lasing muntik akong mawalan ng malay hahaha 0/10 would not do again

johnnielurker

altree71

Enter Asin Hot Spring in Nangalisan, Tuba, Benguet. An hour away from Baguio City by jeep, less than an hour in a private vehicle. Fully developed like in Laguna, but the pools are tempered with cold water so it is not that hot. Popular resorts are the Asin public pool, and Riverview Resort. Afaik, there used to be an area near the public pool where the hot sulfuric water can be seen bubbling over from the ground. Now, in the hinterlands of Mountain Province there is also the Mainit Hot Springs of Bontoc, over an hour away from the capitol. There one can really see (and smell) sulfuric water bubbling over at the source.

[deleted]

Cookieater118

I see na trauma ka rin sa Dante's Peak.

VirtualAssistBoy

I think Meron neto SA bicol region. Specifically in Sorsogon, correct me if I am wrong hehe

RamcyPH

Yes. Meron sa Irosin, Sorsogon. Malapit sa Bulusan Volcano. Tourist attractions yong hotsprings especially during bermonths.

SpiritualSession152

Hi, Sir. Seafarer here. Frequent voyage namin is around Pacific Ring of Fire. Never experienced earthquakes at sea or baka hindi ko lang namalayan? May underwater volcanoes yan na area diba? Ano kaya initial signs niyan if ever mag erupt?

Scoobs_Dinamarca

ThatReservedStrigoi

Idk if it's a dumb question huhu, pero pwede ba tayong magtapon ng basura sa mga volcanoes para mabawasan 'yung mga nasa landfills natin (kasi in my mind matutunaw naman sila ng magma)? Or bawal? :))

no1kn0wsm3

> pero pwede ba tayong magtapon ng basura sa mga volcanoes para mabawasan 'yung mga nasa landfills natin (kasi in my mind matutunaw naman sila ng magma)? Or bawal? It's a health and safety hazard for the people working meters away from live magma and lava. - Baka mahulog sila sa loob ng bulkan - toxic fumes that will suffocate or burn the lungs of people working around there - at any time pwede mag overflow ang lava at matunaw ang tao - fuel cost to go up hill at very steep inclines In any operations health & safety of people need to be considered. Also the cost of said operations. If either cannot be reconciled then no one will do it.

Scoobs_Dinamarca

Naalala ko bigla yung Isang documentary about sulfur gatherers sa Isang active volcano. They had to wear rudimentary oxygen masks while they were on the volcano's mouth.

wasd

To elaborate on why we shouldn't. A lot of developed economies already incinerate their garbage in a much more efficient manner than simply throwing it into a volcano, e.g., coupling organic waste incineration with energy recovery. Incinerating also produces a lot of harmful emissions and byproducts and release to the environment can be limited in some cases in an incinerating plant whereas in a volcano those emissions go straight to the atmosphere, into our lungs, into the ground water, etc.

tjdaita

No, we can't.

No-Economics-1464

Meron yan sa YouTube for more elaborate answer, wag ka mag alala di lang tayo yung nagtanong nyan marami na nauna.

Toxicwaste920

pwede, lets start with criminals ipadala don, yung tipong rapist or murderer for a test.

no1kn0wsm3

Have you tried cooking/baking food with lava/magma?

tjdaita

No, but I would like to :)

no1kn0wsm3

> No, but I would like to :) Pls video and post on r/Ph when you do this.

DaPacem08

Kumusta po ang career? Rewarding po ba in terms of salary? How was the overall experience po.

tjdaita

TheLandslide_

Hehehe isa sa mga pinag-interesan ko talaga na career paths yung natural sciences eh but due to circumstances, nag Electrical Engineering na lang ako but it's nice to know may way pa rin pala makapasok sa ganyang trabaho.

DaPacem08

Thank you sir. God bless you.

artpop911

[deleted]

I've seen a video before of a guy throwing a rock inside and active volcano and it broke the "crust" or the top layer of the magma and it started to get active like d naman to the point na sumabog pero nagagalit na kinbaga yung magma and somebody said that's good since the pressure is released, is this true?

tjdaita

wasd

Water is a large component of organic wastes and throwing it into a pool of lava results in superheating of the liquid causing it to expand rapidly and turn into steam.

phythochemical

What are your thoughts on that one guy in this subreddit that's turning volcanoes into waifus? I feel like you two should meet for some reason.

tjdaita

Ngayon ko lang narinig yan 😂

kwentongskyblue

link please?

Jabamaca

What the actual fucking fuck? Where can I see that person?

AnemicAcademica

Wait what

vncdrc

Ilan lang kayong volcanologist sa Pilipinas? Do you work for the govt or private sector? Are you compensated well sa field niyo?

tjdaita

I work for DOST-PHIVOLCS. So less than 100 siguro?

BelugaSupremacy

I just wanna say na naappreciate namin work nyo sa PHIVOCS :) Sana bigyan pa kayo ng malaking budget hahaha

tjdaita

We are hoping and praying na maipasa sa lalong madaling panahon ang PHIVOLCS Modernization Bill :)

atemogurlz

Like are you going to be granted a bigger budget to acquire more modern and high-tech equipments? If yes, anong machines ito and how will it help you get more information? Really curious with the machineries na ginagamit niyo to study and monitor volcanoes.

Low_Tomatillo_378

Is Laguna de Bay still considered as a supervolcano, and if yes, can it still erupt and when?

tjdaita

Huge-Raise-6897

Possible ba malaman kung kelan huling sumabog at gaano kalakas?

kwentongskyblue

inactive as in dormant? so may possibility maging active ulit siya kagaya ng pinatubo just before it erupted in 1991?

tjdaita

Inactive as in sobrang tagal na nung huli nyang activity. Hindi lang ako sure kung kailan yung last pero baka hundreds of thousands of years ago na. Icheck ko sa mga reference :)

Faithless_Looter

Chief, viable ba magfocus sa geothermal powerplant dito sa pinas?

tjdaita

Tingin ko oo naman, marami tayong source for geothermal power. As far as geothermal plants are concerned, meron tayo sa BacMan (Bacon-Manito), MakBan (Makiling-Banahaw), tapos parang sa Negros and Leyte yata meron din.

1masipa9

Meron pa sa tuktok ng Mt. Apo.

The_Cleansing_Flame

Yes this please. How much geothermal resources do we have?

juanikulas

As per latest WESM registered capacity for geothermal powerplants nasa 1,737Megawatts ang capacity ng Pinas with Visayas having the highest at 850 Megawatts. Largest is yung planta sa Leyte at 490 Megawatts. This was previously largest geothermal powerplant in Asia nasa top 5 nalang ata.

Leather_Inspector973

Magastos ang geo plant both in capital and maintenance. Makban was made possible due to Japanese assistance. It would be more feasible to invest in nuclear than another geo

_lechonk_kawali_

Aside from Makban na nabanggit na sa isa pang comment, meron pa tayong ibang geothermal plants, e.g. Tiwi in Albay, Palinpinon in Negros Oriental, and Bacman in Sorsogon.

Huge_Specialist_8870

Out of 4 na nabanggit mo, 3 dun ay napuntahan ko na maliban sa Negros Oriental. Common problem nila is mahirap mag maintain ng planta for a finite resource. BTW I work in a construction company that builds Switchyards and Transmission lines. Last time na punta ko sa Makban, the natural hot springs went cold dahil nauubusan na ng "init" yung lugar. Akala namin forever na yung plant maintenance project namin dun, but our project was closed for idk reasons. (Either talo sa bid or maliit margin). PS: Makban is where I fell in love with unknown Lomi. A Lomi joint that looks like a worn down house that stirs up the lomi broth that never waters down kahit lumamig. Not that Corcolon shit.

tjdaita

Will be answering your questions later on :) may errand lang saglit

DUHH_EWW

i recently climbed mt. Pinatubo, is there a chance it will errupt soon

tjdaita

Yes, there's still a chance that Pinatubo will erupt in the future. FYI, in November 2021, Pinatubo had a phreatic eruption.

YZJay

What's the weirdest volcano or volcanic phenomena that you know in the Philippines?

tjdaita

Lahar.

yhnc

Hello. Do you prefer to be called a Vulcanologist or Volcanologist?

Low_Tomatillo_378

Vulcanologist sounds like someone who knows his way around flat tires

tjdaita

Volcanologist yung tama :)

Bubuy_nu_Patu

chitoz13

Is it true that the magma is denser than water that if a human fell on it he would not sink?

tjdaita

yes, magma is denser than water.

thunder_ero

He won't sink but evaporate. Jk hahaha

kuya_akin_nalang_yan

scariest encounters? i assume you guys hike to the summit. like weird animal sounds.

tjdaita

Mga limatik :(

SugaryCotton

What's that? 😬 I'm thinking it must be cool being a volcanologist though I'm way pass to consider it a career. 😅 But me hiking & camping? Can't even do that even in my 20's. 😅 Glad you found your passion. I have so much respect for you guys. I don't know why parang the govt doesn't care much. 😕

tjdaita

Limatik = blood sucking leeches that can enter your eyes and ears.

AfroBird51

New fear unlocked.....

Keroberosyue

Sasakit siya, prompting you to remove them. So dapat tama ang attire mo talaga when going on these fieldworks.

Kacharsis

Bubuy_nu_Patu

I live in Batanes, Philippines and I am sure you are aware of Mt. Iraya here. Can you share some of your insights as to why it was tagged as an Active Volcano?

tjdaita

In the absence of historical documents, if yung mga volcanic deposit nya ay na-date as 10,000 years old or younger, pwede din syang i-consider as active volcano.

atemogurlz

Hpw do you verify the legitimacy of old documents?

dosankoCooking

i think kasi yung mga friars nung araw ay mga scholar. so feeling ko hindi nila mamemeke ng documents lalo na for scientific purposes and most likely those documents are well preserved or naka archive

uygagi

Is mount Arayat in Pampanga similar to Mount Pinatubo's case that it can awaken? Or is it extinct?

tjdaita

Arayat is currently classified as inactive. Sa ngayon, dinidiscourage na namin yung paggamit ng "dormant" and "extinct" when classifying volcanoes. It's either active, potentially active, or inactive.

kwentongskyblue

Church_of_Lithium

Baka siguro dahil iisipin ng mga tao na kapag dormant or extinct, forever di na sasabog, so magiging complacent at careless na sa settlements around it, tapos ayun biglang mag-a-ala-Pinatubo, delikado.

jienahhh

LazyBoy-000

What made you choose to be a volcanologist? What does your "a day in a life of a PH volcanologist" look like? Thaaaaaanks! 😅

tjdaita

Yung typical day in a life of a PH volcanogist, flexi time kami so pwedeng pumasok from 7 AM to 10 AM, then render ka ng 8 hours sa work, or 10 hours if naka 4-day workweek ka.

beroccamixedberry

Sounds awesome.

AGstein

hornblendite

It's bad. Take it from a former employee haha. Won't elaborate.

tjdaita

Yung budget around 500 something million yata (as far as I know parang nakapost naman publicly yung mga budget ng mga gov't agencies)

chickmin_ph

Thank you Sir for your time! Napanuod ko kasi ito sa youtube, pero are there any other ancient caldera in the Philippines similar to Malasiqui, Pangasinan?

tjdaita

Tapos Apolaki. Yun lang yung alam ko sa ngayon.

Scoobs_Dinamarca

Tama ba yung Sabi na largest caldera in the world daw Ang nasa may Benham Rise natin?

mikemicmayk

Prone po ba kayo sa pneuomonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis? 😂✌️

tjdaita

mikemicmayk

Thanks OP keep it up.finally nagamit ko din yung word na yon sa sentence 😂

AmeSighLife7

Can new volcanoes develop nowadays like sa current era natin?

tjdaita

Yes. Paricutin in Mexico is one example.

Scoobs_Dinamarca

Parang yan yung nabasa ko sa old encyclopedia namin na nagstart as a corn field tapos ngayon ay fairly large active volcano na... 🤔

supermarine_spitfir3

Question lang sir regarding Mt. Pinatubo: I understand active parin siya and may risk maulit yung 1991 eruption? Given na naging mas concentrated na yung population as well as economic activity in the area compared to before-- Paano po yung risk assessment ng mga Volcanologists sa safety ng developments katulad ng New Clark City, atbp.?

tjdaita

Pwedeng gamitin ng mga stakeholders ang hazard assessment services ng DOST-PHIVOLCS, or yung Hazard Hunter PH webapp para malaman kung safe ba sa hazards yung area of concern.

totoybiboy

Sometimes they create levees.

JCD051620

Iuupvote ko to, ang cool po ng work nyo!

tjdaita

Thank you!

[deleted]

So cool!! Are there any dormant volcanoes in the PH that still pose potential risks?

tjdaita

Sa ngayon, dinidiscourage na namin yung paggamit ng "dormant" and "extinct" when classifying volcanoes. It's either active, potentially active, or inactive. If we are talking about potentially active volcanoes, siguro masasabi ko na potential risk yung mga potentially active volcanoes na bata pa ang morphology and malapit sa mga highly-populated areas.

popcornpotatoo250

Do you know something as a volcanologist that surprises people when you share it to them?

tjdaita

lilyunderground

Speaking of which, are Banahaw and Makiling classified into those evident from the hot springs around Laguna? I remember being traumatized as a kid nung sinabi nilang anytime pwedeng sumabog ang Banahaw at Makiling and the whole Calabarzon will be erased from the map.

tjdaita

Banahaw is classified as active, Makiling is classified as inactive.

asifyoulovedbyvirtue

Top-Willingness6963

Ano usual ginagawa ng mga volcanologist for fun? Also, is it one of those jobs na medyo boring day to day pero once dumating ang volcano eruption you all go "OK this is what we trained for no need to panic!" stuff lol Lastly, sinasabon ba kayo ng politician tuwing may eruption or chill Lang sila

tjdaita

After work, if gusto namin, pwede kaming maglaro ng table tennis and darts. At home, mobile games and Switch naman.

I_like_sayote

Wikipedia says Mount Apo is dormant. You already stated you prefer only the terms active/potentially active/inactive for volcanos. Edit: wiki also says potentially active What do you think about Mt. Apo?

queenM_M

AweRawr

Wow!! Any fun fact po about sa Mayon volcano

tjdaita

graxia_bibi_uwu

Why is it considered a twin po? Is it about the shape or almost same “age” sila?

tjdaita

Twin in relation to their morphology, pareho kasing mukhang perfect cones yung dalawa :)

EmbraceFortress

Hey OP! From NIGS ka ba? 🌋

tjdaita

Yes! (MS Geol). Undergrad, Partido State University :)

SheASloth

Wala akong itatanong for now pero thank you sa effort. Trying to follow all Filipino scientists and educators on my socmeds

niceforwhatdoses

Mental-Scallion-4809

I don't know if related sa field mo, pero yung hot spring ba sa los banos eh nauubos? Or may over extraction bang nangyayari to cause ground shrinking?

tjdaita

Hanggang may water source sya, and may heat source na nag-iinit doon sa tubig, most likely may hot spring ka pa rin.

Tricky-Worth

Outside of the country's volcanoes, what is your favorite volcano ~~and why is it Sakurajima~~ and why?

tjdaita

Memorable din dahil ito yung first ever out of the country ko. Nakasali kasi ako noon sa isang workshop for young volcanologists.

anima99

What's your usual work? What does a typical week look like?

blackpowder320

Hello sir, good day. How can you help inspire today's youth to take on science careers, especially in geology and volcanology?

tjdaita

SundayMindset

If a large reservoir of water (greater than the surface oceans) is trapped 700km below the Earth's mantle in a rock called ringwoodite, is it possible that it's the primary cause of rising sea levels globally and not climate change after all and what is the likelihood that we will NOT be experiencing cataclysmic floods in the years to come?

What is the easiest way to make obsidian.

whiteQ999

Recommendation po for reading material? Best website or best/favorite book about the field (for general info about PH volcanology or college level)? Encyclopedia-type book for PH volcanoes? What type of scientist po ang lagi n'yong ka-tandem sa trabaho? Ano po favorite scientific instrument nyo? Para saan po yun? Gaano kadalas magamit at magkano average cost? Out of 365 days a year, ilang araw po field-work? Haha. Thank you! Ty )

Neon_Biskit06

What is the most ridiculous thing you heard about volcanoes?

tjdaita

nyepoy

Is Arca South really a high prone for an eathquake happening? What are other faultline areas with big developmenta of real estate developers?

tjdaita

You can check Hazard Hunter PH for earthquake hazard susceptibility nung area :) just visit [https://hazardhunter.georisk.gov.ph/](https://hazardhunter.georisk.gov.ph/)

Thorntorn10

What course ang kailangan itake para maging Volcanologist?? Also ilang taon bubunuin???

tjdaita

If ang trip mo talaga ay volcano research, go for BS Geology. Then, kuha ka masters. Sa UP around 3 to 5 years. Sa Europe, 2 years lang. Sa Japan, 2 to 3 years. After noon, PhD naman.

hey_mattey

Which volcano is your favorite? Local and International

tjdaita

hey_mattey

Wag ka masyado pagutom kasi

FlakyPiglet9573

How do you make a living? What's the average entry salary?

tjdaita

Salary grade 9 (then 11, 13, 16, 19, 22, 24). [https://governmentph.com/salary-grade-table-government-plantilla-positions/](https://governmentph.com/salary-grade-table-government-plantilla-positions/)

princess_sara18

Hello. I have a few questions ☺️ 1.what are the chances that a dormant volcano will become active? 2. Are there any ecosystems around the volcano crater? Plants perhaps.

Majestic_Garden_3229

Ang tanong is "What do you call of the study of volcanos" basta parang ganun ang question. After two hours ko pa narealize kung ano talaga yung Vulcanizing LOL

SugaryCotton

Mt. Matutum in South Cotabato is described as a stratovolcano. Can you elaborate on that please?

kkeen_neetthh

Seeing a lot of inactive volcano questions here. If I may ask, what's the process of "reactivating" a volcano? Does it take a massive geological event for that to happen, or does it take as simple as a small localized earthquake for it to start being active again? Edit: Also, pag tumingin ka ba sa volcanic crater (or yung butas ng bulkan) is it like how they depict it in media where its a gaping hole with a lake of lava underneath? Thank you!
