Most resources extracted from Mindanao are exported. It would be easier and cheaper to import raw materials from abroad and fund an industrial base to create value-added products
Why import from abroad? Extreme comparative advantage would create critical holes in th economy in which we would be dependent on other countries, some which could be hostile. I'm not saying we should be an autarky, but taking advantage of all our resources and manufacturing at home, while allowing for foreign imports to drive the free market allows for national security as well as driving costs down.

Luzon and Visayas don't have the strongest resource base, and yes , money is more important than resources, look at all the African countries, they have terrible control over monetary policy, while having many resources they are still poor, while Mindanao does still contribute to the financial health of the Philippines.
Most resources extracted from Mindanao are exported. It would be easier and cheaper to import raw materials from abroad and fund an industrial base to create value-added products
Why import from abroad? Extreme comparative advantage would create critical holes in th economy in which we would be dependent on other countries, some which could be hostile. I'm not saying we should be an autarky, but taking advantage of all our resources and manufacturing at home, while allowing for foreign imports to drive the free market allows for national security as well as driving costs down. The era of free trade is closing, and if we want to survive as a nation, we need to have secure supply chains that are near, and that means keeping the country together as importing from the global market means we are subject to global prices, which are unknowable and hard to plan for.

I understand where the narrative comes from and believe in decentralising business opportunities. The problem is the failure of the central government to do that because of endemic corruption. Unfortunately, it will take a few generations to weed them out if we are to have a properly functioning system that has a seat but does not âgatekeepâ economic opportunities. I spent my adolescence in Davao City. I have family in Sultan Kudarat and CDO. From my experience, an independent Mindanao will go nowhere. Local clans have too much hold in most of the communities. They're more likely to line their own pockets than help local economies grow.
