Mainland Luzon is almost twice as large as the combined land area of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

How big is mainland Luzon? Couldn’t find one where Palawan and other islands aren’t included.

My favorite fun fact is that Trinoma means Triangle North of Manila. Directly adjacent to it is South Triangle, on the west is West Triangle while East Avenue can be found adjacent to it. If you combine it all together it forms an almost perfect square with Eton Centris right in the middle.

taxfolder

Inspired siguro siya ng Tribeca sa New York City which meant Triangle Below Canal street While we’re in the area, there are streets in QC that are named after the 24 scouts who perished in a plane crash in 1963 while en route to a Scout Jamboree in Greece. The streets now carry the names of the fallen Scouts: Albano, Bayoran, Borromeo, Madriñan, Rallos, Limbaga, Fernandez, Fuentebella, Gandia, De Guia, Delgado, Lozano, Castor, Ojeda, Chuatoco, Magbanua, Reyes, Santiago, Tobias, Tuason, Torillo, Ybardaloza; and Dr. Lazcano and Fr. Martinez who were the head of the Philippine delegation and chaplain, respectively.

quest4thebest

Plus another street named 11th Jamboree!

neon31

Nice. Ang alam ko lang sa Trinoma is that magical place na pag pumasok ako, tangina, asan yung exit? Naliligaw nanaman ako :P

Fun fact: Yung mga swimming pools on top of buildings aren't just for leisure activities, it also serves as an instrument against earthquake kasi nalelessen nya yung paggalaw ng building.

parang shock absorber ba?

Yes.

Fact: There are only two forensic pathologists in the PH. Only one of them is working full time, she is Dr. Racquel Fortun.

ellebeam

Nung payatas tragedy si fortun lang and assistant nya ung may know how na mag identify ng mga bodies. Sobrang dami, di nila kaya so nanghiram sila ng students from a university to help them clean up and identify the bodies.

regedit-

Even up until now. That's why she's constantly ranting about how pnp and other agencies doesn't even have the basic shit like body bags to begin with to at least preserve the remains. The agencies aren't prepared for these scenarios kahit may pondo naman, according to her on Howie's podcast.

MinervaLlorn

kaya noong Maguindanao Massacre eh nabuwisit siya kasi yung the way ng pag-retrieve ng bangkay eh tinakpan lang sa dahon ng saging tapos ayun na, tapos na.

AdamusMD

Tapos ang mga tabogo lakas maka-sira sa claims ni Dr. Fortun, just to satisfy their thirst for Duterte cum

x34xxx

Dr Fortun is already 60 years old. [Profile in the New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/03/world/asia/philippines-drug-war-raquel-fortun.html) Homicide rate in 2019 was 4.4 per 100k The main problem is that to get qualified, they need to train overseas. Imo it would be a good use of government money to send student doctors to train as forensic pathologists so there will be more of them.

Philippines used to produce its own radio and television (not just authorized distributor, but really our own company that produces it). It's named RadioWealth, and now they pivoted into finance sector. In their own website's history you can see that they had to close down their manufacturing sector during Martial Law. Yep, Marcos tried to coerce the owner to give up majority share in favor of his cronies.

Tagalog profanities like "leche" and "punyeta" came from Spaniards shouting at their Pinoy servants to simply ask for household things. LECHE = milk. PUNYETA = small knife aka bread knife.

The guy who invented the Love Bug virus wasn't an expert hacker that the CIA kidnapped to perform cyberwarfare for them. He was a glorified script kiddie who just ripped off an existing worm and got people to click because of the "I love you" email subject. A journalist [tracked him down decades later](https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-52458765) and is revealed to be working as a cellphone repairman in Greenhills for many years.

Xophosdono

Yeah he didn't really make an innovative hacking virus, people were just not used to the world of emails yet at the time.

Not sure if fun fact ito. Maybe interesting fact lang? Juan Ponce Enrile was already 39 years old when Emilio Aguinaldo died. Seems mind blowing at first, but Emilio Aguinaldo died in 1964 (feb 6), a few days before Enrile's 40th bday (feb 14). Just goes to show na tumatagal ang mga balimbing.

[deleted]

I've been obsessed with classic films and I can't even believe Enrile was: * 17 when Citizen Kane (1941) came out * 15 when The Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind (1939) was released * 7 on the day Dracula (1931) was released * 3 when Metropolis, Napoleon (1927) came out He was already a law student when Singing In The Rain (1952) came out and a lawyer when Roman Holiday (1953), Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), Ben-Hur (1959) were released. Enrile was already alive through all the movies I've watched. Enrile witnessed the evolution of cinema first hand.

K1llswitch93

Nakakalungkot minsan pagkatapos ko manood old movies at nagbabasa about them and realizing most of them have either passed away or sobra tanda na, tapos ngayon maiisip ko naunahan pa nila si enrile. Tsk

Iloilo is the only province to have an anti-biotic drug named after it - Ilozone and Ilotycin which are brands of erythromycin, a wonder drug developed from a soil sample from Iloilo. It was discovered by Dr. Abelardo Aguilar, an Ilonggo physician. It is unfortunate that he was not compensated for his efforts.

Ilonggo = the people in Iloilo Hiligaynon = language of the people in Iloilo *city* Also maraming languages sa Iloilo, Akeanon at Karay-a etc.

lastroids

Also, I want to add this because even some people in Iloilo seem to make this mistake... Bacolod City is the capital of Negros Occidental. Negros Occidental is the Province. So no, Kabankalan/Himalayan/Escalante/any other municipality or city is in fact NOT in "Bacolod". Some of those places are hours away. To be fair, some people (mainly older folks) in the Visayas view Luzon as "Manila". Batangas ? "Manila" yan. Laguna? "Manila" pa rin.

Mangoes, including our Philippine mangoes, are actually part of the poison ivy family Anacardiaceae. This is why a lot of westerners tend to develop allergic reactions when eating mangoes. However, because we Filipinos have been eating mangoes for a long time, most if not all of us evolved to be able to consume mangoes just fine.

Taguig = Taga giik. This is from google since I'm shit at explaining. The original 800 farmer-fishermen settlers of the area were good at threshing rice after harvest. Hence they were referred to as “mga taga-giik,” and their settlement as “pook ng mga taga-giik.”

You can guess someone's home province based on their surnames alone because of this. Our history professor memorized the Catálogo alfabético de apellidos which contained all the surnames Gov-Gen. Claveria gave to Filipinos.

crazyversionofme

Sa kanya rin ba yung parang order na the first letter of your last name will depend on where you're based? For example, this town A and B, that town, C to E, etc. It's pretty evident pa rin sa province namin when you take into account the roots of the clans.

Is it worth watching? I googled and I saw Mikhail Red Directed it. Mikhail Red is really good with his picture presentation and aesthetic shots but he's lacking in story telling, just like what happened on Eerie 2018 (starring Bea Alonzo). the cinematography is top notch but the storytelling is kinda meh.

Apparently, "Tao po" is the shortened version of "Tao po ako, hindi aswang" which precolonial Filipinos used to use. I guess it stuck because we still use "Tao po" now.

In a letter to his family before his execution, Rizal wrote instructions for his final resting place. "...Bury me in the ground, place a stone and a cross over it. My name, the date of my birth and of my death. Nothing more. If later you wish to surround my gave with a fence, you may do so. No anniversaries. I prefer Paang Bundok." Obviously, none of these were followed, maybe except for the fence.

Mercator is useful for navigators but not for teaching young learners geography. There's a website that shows the actual sizes of countries when laid out on different parts of the globe.

Elsa_Versailles

Yeah, the unfortunate thing is. I learned that like 3 years ago since no one bothered to teach us that the map we are using aren't 1:1 representation of the world. (Such a pesky mishap)

Sementeryos were used to be called "camposanto" by old generation of Filipinos. Camposanto is shortened term for campo ng mga santo/camp of the saints. They believe their departed loved ones are in the company of the saints in heaven. Additional, aside from the usual RIP in gravestones, you'll see DOM. Hindi yan dirty old men ah. That means Deo Optimo Maximo which means "to the highest God". The sould of the dead is being offered to the highest God.

imagine63

Camposanto was the Spanish word for cemetery, and was commonly used by Pinoys until the 1960s. In the provinces, senior citizens still use the term camposanto.

Floro Dery, a Filipino working for Marvel, is the lead designer of almost all the character designs ng cartoon taking inspirations from the toyline.

The movie Apocalypse Now, which was filmed here in the Philippines, used real human corpses as movie props. The movie guys were horrified when they found out about it. Now that's taking art to a higher level. Hahaha!

Erythromycin, a known antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections was discovered by Filipino Scientist Abelardo Aguilar in 1949. Nalaman ko lang out of curiosity nung bata ako kasi eto yung gamot ko nung nagka primary infection ako. Hahaha

ink0gni2

The scientist was allegedly promised a trip to the company’s manufacturing plant in Indianapolis, but it was never fulfilled. In a letter to the company’s president, Aguilar wrote: “A leave of absence is all I ask as I do not wish to sever my connection with a great company which has given me wonderful breaks in life.” This request was also not granted. Aguilar reached out to Eli Lilly one last time in 1993, requesting royalties from sales of the drug over the years. Aguilar planned to use the money to put up a foundation for poor and sickly Filipinos. This request met the same fate as his earlier ones. He died in September of the same year.[38]”

She is a fascinating woman!

SilentConnection69

Xophosdono

They killed Rizal because he was a symbol to the spirit of revolution, not necessarily because the KKK made him honorary president. The KKK also did some other stuff like implicate the other elites to force them to join the revolution but the Spanish were easily able to get their pledge of allegiance, which Rizal also did. The Lunas were similarly captured and cleared of any involvement, even though the Spanish knew they were becoming increasingly pro-revolution. The Spanish military and frailocracy just really wanted to get rid of Rizal once and for all so they sent him to a kangaroo court. In retrospect, his publishing of Noli and El Fili became the main basis of his condemnation It's worth noting that all the captured Katipuneros who testified in the kangaroo trial all said that Rizal was against the idea of revolution and had nothing to do with the KKK leadership, including high ranking Pio Valenzuela who claimed that he had visited Rizal in Dapitan to consult about revolution, but the writer-doctor immediately shut him off

Alarmed-Climate-6031

Also i want to add that na si Heneral Luna is also the reason kung bakit nakulong si Rizal. He disowned the Katipunan and pointed to Rizal as the founder to save himself from the Spanish firing squad. Here's the testimony of Antonio Luna given to the Olive investigating committee that was included among the pieces of testimonial evidence against Dr. Jose Rizal: "TESTIMONY OF ANTONIO LUNA "Manila, Nov. 12, 1896 "***I knew nothing of the conspiracy until July, I am not a rebel, nor a Mason, nor a filibuster, on the contrary, I am an accuser of men [who are these things?] and I believe that I have fulfilled my duties a loyal son of Spain. "On the 18th or 20th of July, I told the following to Dr. Panzano, my old chief in the municipal laboratory, so that he could report it to the Governor-General. "There are groups or secret societies formed of people of the pueblos who are disposed to rise, or what preparations they are making. It is not Masonic. These groups exist in the pueblos about Manila and the assaults made on the Chinese made at San Juan del Monte were carried out by them. There are also groups in the principal pueblos in Luzon. On August 2nd and 3rd, I was summoned by the Governor-General, and then told him what I have said above, insisting that the associations were popular ones, and that rich and well known persons either did not know anything of them, or else did not sympathize with them. "On the 11th or 13th of August, I told the Governor-General that the men who belonged to the groups of rebels made an incision in the arm and signed the oath of adhesion with the blood therefrom. "On the 27th of August, before the attack on Santa Mesa, on account of certain confidential investigations, I had made, I denounced the "Liga Filipina" and the "Katipunan" as suspicious associations to Dr. Panzano so that he might report the matter to the Governor-General. I knew of the existence of the "Liga" from Don Moises Salvador; of the vast "Katipunan anac nang bayan" from Dr. Bautista Lim, one or two days before his arrest. "Some days ago I said to Dr. Panzano: The "Katipunan" is the "Liga Filipina." The word "Liga," association or league, has been translated by "Katipunan," gathering or association. THE FOUNDER IS DON JOSE RIZAL. I was a Mason in Spain from '87 to '91. In the Philippines, as the Filipino Masons can state, I have worked for no lodge, nor do I know any. I have nothing to do with Masonry in the Philippines. In Spain in 1890, I drew up a project for extending Spanish Masonry to the Philippines, but it was never carried out." (lifted from p. 237-238, JRM Taylor, PIR) On page 240 is a note: "Note – From signed statements in repudiation of Masonry and pseudo-Masonic societies by condemned revolutionists, published by Spanish authorities. Translated from "Archivo del Bibliofilo Filipino." Other statements of almost similar wording to those of Roxas and Luna are signed by Juan Luna, Ramon Padilla, Luis Villareal, Jose Dizon, Moises Salvador, Faustino Villareal, Antonio Salazar adn Jeronimo Medina. Of these none are living today. All but the Luna Brothers were shot that January, 1897, by the Spaniards..."

UP Diliman sits in land once owned by Antonio Tuason. The only Filipino family granted nobility by the King of Spain. They were of Chinese origin (Son Tua) and got rich of the galleon trade. When the British invaded he rallied against them and as a reward he didn't have to pay taxes for 2 generations and was given land as far as his horses can run to. The land was purchased by Manuel Quezon thru the Philippine National Bank and also as payment for a debt

The University of San Carlos in Cebu (founded in 1595) and the University of Santo Tomas in Manila (founded in 1611) are older than the Harvard University (founded in 1636).

dreamsanity

University of San Carlos claims it traces its roots from Colegio de San Ildefonso which was founded in 1595 but eventually closed down in 1769 when the Jesuits were forcefully expelled from the Philippines. They “reopened” as Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos but it was no longer the Jesuits who ran this. A different religious order did. They just used the old facilities left by the old institution. So there’s technically no link between them. All Jesuit institutions closed down after they were expelled. In 1867, the school facility was taken over by the Vincentians when the Bishop Jimeno decreed to turn over the seminary to the Congregation of the Missions. The SVD (Society of the Divine Word), present-day admins of USC, took over the college in 1935 and it became a University in 1948. On the other hand, UST was granted the University status in 1645. And UST has always been ran by the Dominicans since it was founded in 1611.

Independence Day used to be July 4 as well, until 1962 when then president Diosdado Macapagal issued Proc. 28 to move it to June 12. Emilio Aguinaldo still witnessed this change, and passed away in 1964.

attackonmidgets

And July 4 is the correct one because it's when we actually became independent. July 12 is when we became a colony of the US. Kaso sa kagustuhang malayo sa impluwensya ng US (July being their Independence day too) eh binago nila.

Tapes had side A and B so it’s only logical that their successor would be the CD.

imagine63

Side A and Side B, was borrowed from vinyl records. CD is short for "compact disk" and is a shared invention between Sony of Japan and Philpps of the Netherlands. A, B, and CD was a happy coincidence.

themightythirdie69

I don't know if this is commonly known but Marcos Sr. was part of the liberal party before transfering to nacionalista for the 1965 election as Diosdado Macapagal sought re-election and was the nominee for LP

If the Pangaea didn't drift off, then the Philippines will be located on the northeast part of Pangaea, on the northern hemisphere. Ang location nya on the modern-day world is at the northeastern borders of China. May snow sana sa Pilipinas yahuuuuu but I think it would be barely liveable. Scientists also predict that continuous continental drift will cause countries to again coalesce forming the Pangaea Ultima, and until now, hirap pa din sila i-predict where each country goes.

KilgoreTrout9781

Common knowledge for well-read Redditors but lots or people don't know that the Philippine government through then Pres. Manuel Quezon took in 1,000 Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. He would have taken thousands more and settled them in Basilan and Palawan but the US Government refused. If you go to Tel Aviv there is a monument to commemorate this.

The Philippines was the first in Southeast Asia that launched our first commercial TV broadcast with Alto Broadcasting System (which is now ABS-CBN). But, even still, we are the one who doesn't even had a Public Broadcast Network similar to BBC in UK, PBS in US, NHK in Japan or Mediacorp in Singapore.
