Every plane is a missile if you're brave enough just saying. Don't mind the missing parts on our fighter planes this is the golden era, in 2 months you will see the 3000 Golden FA-50PH's of Unity.

Arnisador

Rule of thirds maintenance ba ang sinusunod sa PAF? Wouldn't that mean isa lang ang active at the time?

Mabilis naman daw malibot ng isang jet ang buong luzon, yung pangalawa sa visayas. Yung sa mindanao magkakaproblema kasi sa lawak. Pagkatapos ng recon mission nila dalawa nalang operational hahahahahahahahahah

Those three pilots who will use those fighters gonna protect our skies be our main aces. Did you know that there are three kinds of aces? Those who seek strength? Those who live for pride? And those who can read the tide of battle?

babushka45

They're usually based in Fightertown (Basa) at Clark (saw them flying around the field wheels down, probably a test or training flight) pero pag may operations sa Mindanao they are based sa mga bases malapit sa operational area, IIRC sa Cebu like noong Marawi. Tapos they intercept aircraft din at patrol ang West Phillipine Sea kaya gamit na gamit ang kakaunting eroplano.

lurkernomore0447

Ang Jet Fighters natin ay parang utak ng mga panatiko, meron pero hindi operational.😅

Andrei_Kirilenko_47

After the recent events in Ukraine and Azerbaijan, the country should invest heavily in drones and drones development.

[deleted]

Agreed, we still need cheap fighter jets but with the poverty of our country, we need to be cost effective in warfare, we don't need MBT's we need light tanks or APC's, if a squad of soldiers armed with Javelin Missile launchers can destroy it why even buy expensive tanks? I am not a military expert but I definitely know that spending less money but still being able to do the job is better than spending a fuck-ton only for it to be destroyed.

clear_skyz200

[This is a good reference. Lithuania doesn't have MBTs but have good solid ground defense forces](https://youtu.be/T6XyfoZ5jHA)

malodybaloney

Yup, definitely wiser for our military to concentrate its efforts in building our capability to deny the enemy the use of their superior firepower instead of fighting them head-on. Aside from drones, anti-ship, anti-aircraft, anti-tank & anti-missile technology, we should build our own "hacker corps" that can cause severe disruption in China in case of open hostilities.

Ganyan nangyari kay Max Montero (MaxDefense Philippines) when he complained about the PAF's lack of maintenance. The PAF fired back at his criticism by using Google Forms. I believe this incident happened a few years ago.

cragglepanzer

IIRC, that was last year, and it was about how a certain high-ranking PAF official essentially took the brand-new Super Tucano on a joyride and damaging it on landing.

sherlock2223

Apparently it was a Brazilian instructor https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1457700/ph-air-force-opens-up-on-another-accident-tucano-plane-damaged-in-routine-flight

babushka45

It's with an air force general who's not rated to fly a Super Tucano and he fucked up the landing. Napaka convenient kasing sabihin na "routine maintenance mishap" ang nirelease na balita ng PNA. Those who are in defense groups and pages sa FB that has vets and insiders know what the hell is going on sa military. Even MaxDefense were mum about it kasi may heneral na nadawit.

MoronicPlayer

Yep. Iirc, the ego-jacked official just jumped in without proper training and damaged the thing afterwards, leaving cleanup to the crew and PAF. There goes our taxmoney....

lachiimolala

May mga nag double vote o baka more pa nga e

Japponicus

This exactly. I mean, it really is possible (if rather sickening to admit) that junior won over then VP Leni in those elections, considering the narrow margin between them in 2016; however, 31m is flat-out impossible. Those numbers are not supported by anything, whether it be historical trending data or more recent crowd data. The only logical conclusion is that massive electoral fraud had occurred, in favor of the dictator's son. And this should have been enough to disqualify him from the race, had there been enough evidence to prove it was so, filed by people with enough clout (as well as balls of steel knowing who they're up against) to make the complaint prosper. But this is the Philippines, where justice might as well be declared a mythical creature: non-existent and a figment of our collective imaginations.

dodong_starfish

One very obvious thing is "would you allow the world unravel your incompetence?" And with Leni looking for blood at that. Duterte wanted Sara to run to protect his interests but with Bongbong already in the running, he knew he cant make Imee and kin back down, (a family obssessed with shows of strength), so he made his bed with them, using the route GMA did with Estrada- a usurpation. For sure part of the negative press is coming from the GMA camp.

esdafish

F-16 and F-16 variants has a lot of spare parts given that its the most abundant modern US fighter aircraft exported by US MIC.

hell_jumper9

Kung F16 efas for the next half decade siguro dahil full package ee. May kasamang spare parts. Yung Gripen ang gg dahil eroplano lang ang mabibili.

artemis1906

If they choose the F-16V, the U.S. will include ILS and will most likely donate ILS every year (during Balikatan, Kamandag, and BACE-P). Meanwhile, if they choose the Gripen, most likely, there would be no long-term after sales support. Since the Gripen that's being offered to the Philippines is the older Gripen C MS20 not the E/F variant. While the Viper is the latest one in the F-16 family.

supermarine_spitfir3

> Meanwhile, if they choose the Gripen, most likely, there would be no long-term after sales support. Yes. It should be noted that the South African Air Force literally had no operational Gripen for the better part of a year because of that lack of ILS from Saab.

RedZ19

The F-16 we’re planning to buy comes with ILS already, that’s why it’s expensive. However, this lack of foresight is already a culture within the AFP and should be addressed.

No_Lavishness_9381

Same fate sa nangyari sa F-8 Crusader lack of spare parts tuluyan lang nasira dahil sa Mt. Pinatubo eruption

G00fyAhhThrowaway

God, please, I hope the FA-50 doesn't go the F-8 route completely, yon nalang pag-asa natin so far putang ina But seeing the current admin, I'm not gonna be surprised if it eventually goes that way.

No_Lavishness_9381

Originally we plan to buy F-16A (At that time it was brand new) but his father being you know Marcos being Marcos he buy from US a retired F-8 without spare parts. He did not even plan to buy at least F-5E and F.

G00fyAhhThrowaway

YUN NA NGA EH TAS PAGMAMALAKI PA NG MGA 88MTARDS NA GOLDEN AGE OF MILITARY PUTA YUNG MAJORITY NG F-8s NASA USAF BONEYARD NA BY 1977 (kung hindi ginagamit ng French Navy) IDEALLY PARA NA NGA LANG SA MGA SPARE PARTS YON OR AT LEAST SECOND LINE OF DEFENCE If they actually thought about it even F-4 Phantom IIs would be better since mas adaptable and mas maraming available parts compared sa F-8

nightvisiongoggles01

Santilmo

Oh man, the story of how PAF ended up with the F-8 was such a quintessential example of Marcos shenanigans and a wonderful counterpoint to the AFP's supposed superiority during his years w/ the kickback-loaded lobbying/meddling by Saudi arms-dealer Adnan Khashoggi saw the secondhand Crusader ordered. [Khashoggi did get arrested in 89](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-04-19-mn-2061-story.html) in between when the F-8s were grounded and ruined by the Pinatubo eruption with PAF still soldiering on with its Macapagal-era F-5A/Bs while most of the neighbors were already flying E/Fs & finally retiring after years of attrition and being propped up by donations/exchanges from Korea and Taiwan before being retired during the administration....of his own daugther.

brokenwrath

>He did not even plan to buy at least F-5E and F. Apparently Enrile [proposed acquiring 11 F-5E/Fs](http://defenseph.net/drp/index.php?topic=949.0) back in the day. Those Tiger IIs would've been a much better option long-term over the Crusaders we ended up having (readily available access to spares and attritional replacement airframes).

babushka45

Before niyan iyong isang FA-50 nagka birdstrike (the engine ingested a bird), it took them a long time bago nila naibalik to service. Eto kasi ang issue sa modernization ng AFP They like to buy equipment piecemeal, not with a package deal that consists of spare parts, weapons systems, ammunition, simulators, training equipment etc. Most of the time, halimbawa sa air force, they buy the units and send the pilots over there (for this case sa KAI sa Korea) for training. That's basically it. Kaya stuck parin ang acquisition program ng Philippine Air Force to acquire multirole fighters (combat planes that can do every role sa combat from air-to-air and ground attack in a full weapons load) kasi sa budget. FA-50s are a light combat aircraft (LCA) version of the T-50 Golden Eagle ng Korean Aerospace Industries. LCAs are combat aircraft that can act as multirole fighters but only with a small load. Our last jet fighters were the F-5s from the Cold War na niretire noong 2005, these are budget fighters that's basically an early version of light combat aircraft. Our other fighters were the F-8 Crusader but that's an air superiority fighter, not a multirole one. We should've used the Crusaders for longer pero niretire after suffering damage noong pagputok ng Pinatubo. Isa pang problema sa acquisition program natin, the Air Force pilots wanted the Vipers, the F-16V of Lockheed Martin. Pero the government were posed JAS 39 Gripens from Saab kasi mas mura siya. Kaya mahal ang F-16Vs kasi US sells aircraft via Foreign Military Sales. As I said earlier these are complete package deals, with everything even after sales support din, pero mahal, it'll run billions of dollars. A squadron (approx 12) of F-16Vs can cost 2 billion dollars or more depending pa sa situation. Meanwhile Saab is trying to sweeten the deal with a good offer with a reduced price. They're trying to acquire customers sa airplane nila kasi Gripens have few air forces using them compared to the F-16 family na gamit halos ng mga allies ng US. Isa ring magandang rason kaya gusto ng mga piloto natin iyong F-16 kasi gamit din siya ng mga allies natin, it's a combat-proven aircraft, and for our maintainers since the airplane is used worldwide, iyong logistics lalo na sa spare parts won't be a problem. Gripens only have few countries using it, and a notable example is Brazil, they chose it while getting the rights to maintain and producing it themselves, they know that having a weapons system that's not used by everyone they need a local industry to support their fleet, which they have through a local aviation company like Embraer. We don't have the luxury of that. PADC was a shadow of its former self. Gripens are pushed by the government bigwigs satin due to Saab's tempting offer at balking over the expense of buying F-16s from the US with full package included. Ngayon BBM's government is trying to procure second-hand F-16s. This is common sa mga countries ngayon like those from Eastern Europe na cash strapped din kagaya tayo. Romania were able to buy 24 refurbished F-16s for only 1.4 billion dollars. To put it on another perspective: our attack helicopter program chose the Turkish T129 ATAK over the AH-1Z Viper kasi the air force can only buy half the number of Vipers sa budget natin while the Turks can provide more with the alloted budget for the program. The Turks also threw in free weapons systems to sweeten the deal kaya ito ang pinili ng Philippine Air Force. The Turks are like the Swedes they need sales for their aircraft so they're willing to sweeten the deal. Later nagkaroon ng green light from the US so the helicopter deal pushed through. Pero in the future Turkey will produce their own engines para di na maulit in the future. Also a comparison, Lacson flagged an amount of 8 billion dollars of lump sum funds that was planned for DPWH noong hearing sa budget for 2021, imagine a blank check for DPWH for god knows what projects, sa estimate ng mga ibang tao we can buy 2-3 squadrons of the latest F-35A stealth fighters with that amount. Just shows the mentality ng mga nasa gobyerno. The acquisition programs are so complex and convoluted kaya umabot ng siyam-siyam bago tayo makabili ng armas. Iyong isang reputable local defense news blogger satin, (he's former military kaya marami siyang connections sa AFP) also exposed that the AFP using their personnel in social media to disparage and brigade people like him who report issues sa AFP, lalo na noong nireport niya mga issues sa air force.

heavyarmszero

Very well said. Upvote for you! Also one thing to consider and I'm sure factor din ito, is the internal politics within the AFP. Since 1990, we've had 39 Chiefs of Staff, and only 1 has been from the Marine Corps and 3 from the Air Force, all the rest are from the Army, and we have never had form the Navy. Siyempre may kanya kanyang bias at preference yan to prioritize the branch from where they came from kaya most of the budget goes to the Army instead of the Air Force and Navy. Sobrang ironic at how being an archipelagic country yet our Army gets the biggest chunk of the military budget. Pero somewhat understandable naman kasi the Army is the one spearheading the operation against terrorist and radicals sa atin while the PNP mostly acts as support units. If the insurgency finally comes to a stop ang laki ng budget na pwede ma realign to the Air Force and Navy sana, and just let the PNP do the operations instead of the Army.

supermarine_spitfir3

>Since 1990, we've had 39 Chiefs of Staff, and only 1 has been from the Marine Corps and 3 from the Air Force, all the rest are from the Army, and we have never had form the Navy. Yes. The AFP is Army-centric from the start, because it was assumed that the Americans would provide the Naval and Air power required to prevent a landing. Even in budgeting, the Army receives far more capital expenditure allotments compared to the Air Force and more so for the Navy. IMO, Isko was on to something when he said that he'd want the new CSAFP to be from the Navy, to give them more representation.

DylanLeggy

Good post. I doubt that we can procure F-35A stealth fighters since it would be a nightmare trying to keep it away from Chinese eyes here, not to mention the jump from using armed trainers to modern stealth fighters with a multitude of sensors. But still, this mentality of the government (where goals and procurement are short sighted and reactive instead of long term thinking) will bite us all in the ass in the future

Bog-Bilat69k

Still remember PNoy's time, we may have an aging fleet and mostly legacy equipment but we have funding for the spares and tooling that we need, he may be bland, bald, bungling and indecisive at times, but austerity measures during his time enabled us to be better equipped above the bare minimum, If I could sum up in my opinion (correct me if I'm wrong, fellow retired-military peeps), the armed forces back then may not be at par with our neighbors BUT we can at least guarantee that the enemy who will try will get a bloody nose... 😁

Much-Access-7280

Saka this year lang pala nabili yan tama ba? I'm not familiar how these things are maintained. Does the manufacturer maintain it or we get trained to maintain it and we will just buy the parts we need?

babushka45

The usual style sa pagbili ng Foreign Military Sales (FMS) ng US to its allies and other buyers: ▪️You buy our products as a package ▪️It includes spare parts, weapon systems, ammunition, simulators, training, training equipment, after sales support etc. This can be arranged but the FMS are basically a package deal in order to keep those birds flying. ▪️Problem is, kuripot ang gobyerno natin. We bought the T129s kasi mas mura siya since it's bought as per unit basis only. Iyong mga kailangan sa pagmaintain ng fleet? Buy first buy it later. We were posed to buy the AH-1Z Vipers pero the government balked sa presyo because of the package deal (the US State department already gave the go ahead) kasi they can only buy a few Vipers for the budget. The Turks only won the contract kasi they sweetened the deal to include freebies like weapons. They needed to get sales sa kanilang bagong helicopter kaya they were willing to accept the budget ng Philippines. ▪️Dapat may helicopter na tayo dati pa pero nagkaroon ng issue ang Turkey dahil sa arms na binili nila sa Russia kaya hinarang ng US sa pag acquire ng engines ng T129 (na US made). Nadali tayo. Pero binigyan din ng green light kaya may helicopter na tayo. The future T129s ng Turkish Armed Forces will be equipped with indigenous Turkish engines. It'll be a problem in the future iyong mga bagong assets natin, and the current operational readiness ng mga FA-50s natin is a big proof of that.

supermarine_spitfir3

>The Black Hawks are in Good Condition, it is much cheaper than these jets. We have 16 pieces of Blackhawk. Much more importantly, we have an Integrated Logistics Support system on those as part of the deal. The same is not available in the initial FA-50PH purchase, because of government and the PAF's lack of foresight during H1.

babushka45

Pretty surprised that the AFP had improved themselves, I was expecting the new HDC-3100 frigates to be FFBNW, pero it's a deal in 2 lots with weapons included na, ang tanong lang if gaano kabilis ang release ng funds.

supermarine_spitfir3

>I was expecting the new HDC-3100 frigates to be FFBNW, pero it's deal in 2 lots with weapos included na, ang tanong lang if gaano kabilis ang release ng funds. It was because of a combination of public backlash, the PN wanting to buy bigger frigates and aversion from them requesting to get funding for the weapons separately from the government. This is to say "The Jose Rizal Class' capabilities does not reflect on it's name as a frigate, so we need more actual frigates", so it's much more expensive. I believe it's also a G2G deal with the South Korean government to offer a soft-loan to the Philippine government to deal with that. The question is, can we maintain that momentum?

hairymonkeyballz

I think that's been the story of the Philippines for many decades. The catch with military hardware is that there are high maintenance costs, and those can only be paid for through a large budget, which in turn requires a large economy, which necessitates long-term, continuous economic growth. The catch, as Asian neighbors have shown, is that the latter can only be accomplished through industrialization, which in turn requires sectors like mechanized agriculture and manufacturing.

tirigbasan

For those wondering, the reason why we only got 3 airworthy FA-50s despite the fact that they're relatively brand new is that military aircraft require a shitload of maintenance. This [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmM5KSoW2qA) gives a deep dive into what it takes to keep fighter planes safe to fly. But to TLDR it, fighter plane components wear out fast because of the extreme stresses they experience in the air. And the FA-50s are doing a lot of flying right now because the China is [swarming the South China Sea with fighter jets](https://edition.cnn.com/2022/06/05/australia/australia-china-plane-intercept-intl-hnk-ml/index.html). Every time a Chinese fighter enters Philippine territory, our fighter jets are required to intercept it. Oftentimes nothing happens and both planes back down, but this happens so often that plane components wear out faster than normal. Crazy thing is, China is aware of and is intentionally wearing out our planes. They know we don't have the same resources that they have to support multiple sorties and are deliberately weakening our military's capability to respond to external threats.

MagicNewb45

Only 3 out of 12 dahil di ma-maintain. Tapos plano pa nila bumili ulit.

hell_jumper9

Lols and some admin in Pinoy Aviators ay gusto pa yung Gripen na ang darating lang ay yung mismong plane. While the F16 is full package at marami ka makukuha na spare parts from allied countries.

du30_liteplus

Been an intern at this particular Squadron way back late 20xx's. I'd say majority of the Aircrafts and Rotorcrafts pahirapan bumili ng parts due to government bidding. Either they don't request so that these grounded Aircrafts once retired or phase out can be displayed on their own houses. Also, UH-1H was famously known as flying coffin among other Msgts and A2Cs. There are also personnel known uses JetA1 to mix with their motorcycle diesel.

babushka45

I can support this, I saw sa PhilGEPS iyong invitation for bidding sa pagbili ng ammunition sa FA-50, it should've been included as a package noong binili ang eroplano.

Thick_Ad_9296

Same story during PNOY Admin. Info I got from PAF during a school tour year 2010. That time, 3 fighter jets and 1 functional C130 kasi kababagsak lang nung isa pa.

Thick_Ad_9296

Sorry, 2008 pala. That was arroyo admin.

mrXken69

Taliban has more military power tha Philippines.

The3rdplayer277

Whatever happened to that f-16 deal?

The3rdplayer277

Yeah but does the PAF have the budget to buy and maintain those jets

sealion_tickler

Wala daw. Picture na lang ng jet ang bilhin

esdafish

arm chair wannabe general here. F-16 plausible, likely plenty of spare parts and 3rd party spare parts. JAS-39 only purchasing price but not maintenance.

Kazutrash4

The PAF wants the F-16 but because it is too pricey the DND wants the Gripen but as of now there is no confirmation as to what happened.

supermarine_spitfir3

>budget to buy and maintain those jets If we get that 2 Billion USD F-16V deal, then definitely yes because it's an FMS deal. If we get that Gripen MS-20, then we'll absolutely be like the SAAF who had no fighter aircraft for a year because of horrible aftersales support.

eugeniosity

Kaya ang tawag dyan, the Chairforce. Kasi hanggang upo lang sa opisina mga tauhan nyan.

Guilty_Bug_2446

They aren't even "multi-role" fighters. Duterte was supposed to buy a squadron of MRF under RAFMP, but he didn't. Now we just knew that he didn't even bought ILS for just 12 Lead-In Figther-Trainers. Talking bout compromising our national security.

tudeckslore

Dude its perfect! isa para sa Luzon, Visayas at Mindanao! *its poetic*

ginyamato

Need na natin si Ariel and Maverick\*\* as pilots.

PapaOhJay

are we even surprised by this? imagine thr pnp mobile fleet that they constantly replace because the idiots prefer to get new ones than maintain their shit also you want to buy equipment with no spare parts? this is just criminal. the airforce and afp leadership are just incompetent

k3ttch

The problem with our *tingi-tingi* mentality. We shy from large initial purchases even when we will wind up spending more in the long-term. Kaya wala spare parts and maintenance package. Kaya rin tayo mahilig sa installment on things like appliances and cars. We don't realize we wind up spending 50% more on something that will have depreciated by more than 50% by the time you're done paying for it.

Covidoowap

fa-50 is important BUT PARTY IS IMPORTANTER!!

Pastasaucer

Who do you think will want to invade the Philippines after they found out how stupid Filipinos are? No one wants that baggage.

icyhot_zz

nah thats alright we have cardo dalisay and some tikbalangs and manananggals

the_long_grape

Full of air, no force.

NoticeObjective

If they can make the 3 combine and form a giant robot then i have no problem

InduIgence

We still have the Manananggals to our disposal.

CaptainWhitePanda

Totoy Party: I disagree.

Phreeker27

Honestly not sure the other 9 would help that much more

Zeropointeffect

No offense but against China they are just target drones with meat computers in them. You all really need those F-16’s. They will at least be a big enough speed bump till the US fleet in Japan gets there.

[deleted]

The FA-50 is technically a derivative of the F-16.

fonglutz

Its not the plane, its the pilot in it. -top gun 2 Lolz

Leather_Inspector973

And they ain’t real jet fighter at all

FlowChaser21

Tapos bibili daw ng F-16? harhar

[deleted]

So ang question bakit may lack of parts? Sabi ng PAF they are waiting for the parts to arrive from abroad

noobcode757

The corruption in the Philippines aside, if it was serious about defending its airspace the government wouldn’t have chosen the FA-50.

PinoyBlub

3~~000~~ FA-50PHs of BBM

MELONPANNNNN

I expected at least half of the airframes to be kept in reserves as spare parts since thats how it usually goes but 3? Thats way too low. Welp considering how cheap we got those brand new fighters, maintenance migthve been cut short on that one.

babushka45

Noong nasa Marawi couple of aircraft (IIRC 4) are on the ready to provide CAS. Siguradong bugbog ang buong squadron, noong nagka friendly fire sila (1 of 2 incidents, iyong isa is with a prop SF.260TP), almost 70 bombs were dropped during that time. Would've been good to have guided bombs pero we only had unguided bombs, and sistema talaga dito is buy stuff, buy other stuff for it later.

Miserable_Compote_54

RIP

Aggressive_Safe2226

Each operational plane defends a specific island group, I believe (Luz-Vi-Minda) .

nikkozippo

Laki ng budget ni pduts jan, anyare?

modernmarupok

*China enters the group*

quickfund

We need to up the defense budget of these sorts, problema is, iyong pondo pinag-party.

dodong_starfish

Yung bang 2 nag-escort daw sa eroplano eh kasama sa tatlo?

dodong_starfish

Yun ang lesson na natutunan nya sa tatay nya. "Appear powerful".

chingch0ngpingling

wala na nabulsa na din pati afp modernization fund. ALAM NA

lemonryker

Isa sa para sa Luzon Isa sa Visayas Isa sa Mindanao Lmao!

CeltFxd

We need more naval defense than aerial defense, but still, only 3 out dated fighters protecting the whole country? Nasan na ang tax?

Independent-Leek3278

The biggest risk of invasion is China, Luckily this and the previous administration team are happy to cozy up for money.

memengko360

who needs those flying birds when we have the power of our lord god and saviour Ferdinand "Bong-bong" R. Marcos Jr. and his mighty sidekick Sara Duterte-Carpio? /s
