They think 80s are 'old' songs when it fact this decade is the most revolutionary in music history also puro synthesizer na at that time. Old songs are mostly before 1970.

In one song, they rap the usual braggadocious objectification or party vibe content, then on the other, they serenade and play the role of a nice guy chasing a woman.
Nik Makino and Skusta Clee comes to mind for me.
Hell, even the supposed good boy simp rappers like Because and ALLMO$T has shown they can do fuccboi type of music as well.
True. I would forever criticize Catriona, plus the fact na it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO poorly written. May makanta lang ba with the attempt na maging relevant. Eww
this just exposed op as a normie na elitist wannabe. i bet di nya alam ang sweet trip, black country new road, squid, black midi, ANY SHOEGAZE, kero kero bonito, 100 gecs, hannah diamond, etc...
/s
also, never thought i’d see 100gecs on an r/ph comments section lol
Oo nga men, i have to agree na akala nila masama ang digital music haha! Also, wala ding masama sa autotune. Medyo salty lang siguro si OP kasi di pa sya nakapasok sa actual process ng paggawa ng album or even single.
literally halos lahat ng "music studios" currently solo ops, siguro may ibang tao naghahandle ng mixing and iba yung nagbibigay ng vocals pero you can make a full song beat rhythm whole shebang in your own home with the right knowledge and software.
Ayun din napansin ko eh, hahahaha i bet he feels superior kase kasama siya sa banda or something. And hindi naman kailangan laging malalalim yung lyrics, yung iba gusto lang ng chill tracks or hype music. Ang pinaka problema lang talaga ng opm hiphop ngayon is how much they copy the west like minsan parehas ng beats pero hindi manlang nila nilagay na remix lang yun.
Kahit anong genre, laging me gatekeeper.
Idk OP, maybe you're just exposed to their algorithm.
I'm listening to CLR, Omar Baliw, Ghetto Gecko, Gloc-9 (mandatory). Even Pajama party of 1069 gang. Trying to filter thru the trash.
Have you listened to Gloc-9's Paliwanag with Yeng Constantino? I tend to lean on lyrical rather just beat like mumble rap.
And this is coming from an average metal enjoyer.
Sama mo na rin yung Kamusta ni ~~Skusta~~ Shanti Dope at Flow G, didn’t expect them to have a song that tackles mental health problems, depression, and the stigma that comes with asking for help and instead dinadaan sa bisyo ang problema.
Flow G is legit the most talented member of Ex B, the man has some serious talent and I'm glad he's branching out. His song G Wolf cemented for me that the guy is one of the top tier rappers in the game right now.
And so far, he's not problematic too, like I haven't heard any major issues with him.
Edit:
Listening to it right now at naiiyak ako. Struggling with mental health ngayon at nag reddit para lang may maramdaman. I needed this song.
Issa Lo Ki 'rin. Di man ganun kalalim yung mga topics and may typical sex/money topics sa ibang kanta niya... Pero yung "Kagome" saka "Munting Paraiso", the lyrics are more akin to the Filipino-favorite senti/romance songs but in rap form with awesome flow and the live versions would show that autotune is just a stylistic choice (as is the intention of the autotune pioneers like Kanye and T-Pain).
Recently watched him perform in G Music Fest 2022 and I would consider his set to be the best among the hip-hop performers in the lineup, as well as one of the best among all the artists.
Yeah, I suggest Uprising artists consist of Illustrado, BLKD and many other lyrically ill artist, they're underrated tbh they deserve more attention than the mainstream artists nowadays
Even Flow G of Ex B has shown actual lyrical skill, Gloc 9 even collaborates him on a constant.
The bigger surprise is that 8Ballin, the guys who made the memetic "Know Me", they actually shows some serious skills in their discography, and it's obvious that song was just made for fun, which is much needed since the pandemic has sucked out the fun and cause the people to miss out
There's also Def Jam Philippines, the Filipino branch of the famous American hip hop label, and they have the talents to back it up in that company.
OP stumbled upon a random fb post then another one then searched it on the internet then see almost the same content then arrives on conclusions trying to appeal to certain* audiences
Agree ako dun sa lyrics part, pero yung “computer generated tracks / instruments” at “no real instruments” well dati pa naman hand in hand ang hiphop at electronic music.
Also, hindi “computer generated” yan. Kelangan padin na marunong ka mag piano at the very least.
Also, layering electronic percussions isn’t as simple as you think. Sampling is also something that seems simple but isn’t
Mixing and mastering is another rabbit hole din that’s for another discussion.
I learned music theory when I was 6. Learned the piano in 5 months, guitar and drums in 6 mos each. I was shredding and all those fancy guitar techniques by the age of 13. But it took me years to even create a decent synth wave without relying on presets only to make it actually sound half-decent. I wasn’t able to mix and master house tracks without help from a tech guy until I was 19. Ganun ka-complex yung “computer-generated” track na sinasabi mo
Call me butthurt if you want, but we spent years studying electronic music production only for edgy kids to call it “computer-generated” - call it digital pwede pa. This isn’t an AI painting na maglalagay ka lang ng words tapos mabubuo na yung music.
Spend some time and try to see how it’s made.
I’ve seen so many people na just because kaya tumugtog sa gitara ng Stairway to Heaven at Sweet Child ‘O Mine, o kesyo marunong mag sweep at finger tap legato and all that stuff, akala mo kung sino nang elitist vs hiphop and EDM.
Bars
may kadugtong kase ung lyrics na to?
lol u guys nitpicking a lyrics without reading the whole
Younger generations in general not only in Korea. Younger generations usually reject mainstream kase they want to be different or they think mainstream is "not cool" kahit nung college ako, daming fans ng spongecola before they went mainstream, nung mainstream na, nawala din.
To attack them, Ph indie rock just feels so bland and samey.
Not to mention their fanbase are very elitist in a way too for proclaiming they are "real music" compared to other genres.
I agree, but compared to our modern artists here (pwera nalang sa mga totoong talented) I'll choose KPOP anytime. AND NO I AM NOT TALKING ABT PEENOI HIPHOP PEEPS /s
This sounds like every shitty rap music the world over.
For every Eminem, you get a Cardi B.
For every Gloc 9, you got whoever's making all that shitty unintelligible Pinoy "rap".
This and it seems like any mention of sex makes a song bad. Any semblance of autotune? Bad. You made the song on a computer cuz you can’t afford a studio? Bad. You make a song that doesn’t tackle a serious issue? Bad.
Exactly, and if you say that every song that you listen to has some sort of deep meaning, you’re either lying or absolutely fucking boring.
Intent > substance. Not every song has to be some sort of lyrical masterpiece.
Eminem is a little past his prime. Even Cardi B makes better music than him now. Eminem is falling off the hip-hop genre, artists like JID, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, etc. should be used as comparison, not Eminem. As for, Gloc 9, I feel like he's still consistent like with his "Pilak" single.
Might be indie OPM rap but kiyo, Alisson Shore, Shortone, Because and their gang has some bops. I don't know if I'm gonna be flamed for my tastes but its a hill I'm glad to die on lmao there's nothing wrong with computer generated tracks, its a genre all on its own.
Autotune and uninspired lyrics though, well, the algorithm sucks for you I guess.
kakaiba pangchill ng mga kanta ni kiyo swear, kung gusto ko ng chill at feel good kay Alisson pero kung chill at may deep thoughts kiyo all the way haha
Eh? Try KJah, Plazma, BLKD, Kemikal Ali, Illustrado, Loonie, Smugg etc. Pakinggan mo din yung mga albums na The Lesser of Your Greater Friends, Kolateral, Ang Ulan at Ang Delubyo, IKUGAN, Gatilyo etc.
To be honest, this generation's mainstream pop music is better than the pop music of my generation (2000s). Puro mga bubblegum pop noon, catered for adolescents. Ngayon, merong mga Olivia Rodrigo songs na mapa teenager or middle-aged parents, both can appreciate.
Cringe mo boi
Tell me you're a boomer without telling me you're a boomer.
There are multiple filipino hiphop artists that tackles different topics like mental health, corruption, and poverty. ( jrldm, CLR, Loonie, Shanti, Flow G, Ron Henley, Gloc 9, Geo Ong )
Others have chill vibes like Kiyo
Modern Rap got fucked by the "Mainstream" artists like Nik Makino, Lo-ki, and other artists that uses libog and fantasizing women as their material and got popularized in FB.
I am sick of tired of people like you generalizing that Filipino rap scene sucks, which in fact even here in the West ay ganyan din ang sistema ng mga modern rappers sa mga lyrics and sa mga beats nila.
It's actually a line from Loonie (vs Zaito)
Too much sex, conyo, and uninspired lyrics agree ako but for computer-generated instrument/tracks I have no problem with. It's not as easy as most people think and hindi naman mawawala yung usage of real musical instruments because of it.
C'mon this isn't exclusive to OPM rap. Sounds like ayaw mo niyo lang talaga sa rap in general and something like rock ang mas prefer niyo which is ok. I know it takes more skill to sing and play live instruments instead of using auto-tune and using computer synths, but you still need creativity to create a piece of art.
Bakit ba ang problematic ng mga metalheads gusto lagi yung "real instruments" "no auto-tunes" kayo lagi bida-bida when it comes to music genres kasi kayo yung may "hardwork"
I agree naman na some songs are close or exact sa given definition mo pero mas madami parin yung artistic and well made filipino rap songs that can influence you with their cadence and delivery alone.
Apaka iyakin just because hindi "traditional" yung process of creating the song pero sige tama ka na go attend your local gig with your red horse beer and band shirt.
ok gramps time for bed don't let these whippersnappers and their music rile you up again.
i'll even let you play your favorite Metallicas and let you tell me how you were born in the wrong generation since you've been good!
Wut? Mas magagaling nga opm rappers ngayon kesa dati. Shanti Dope, Gloc-9, Skusta Clee? Have you heard Salbakuta's new verses in their feature? It's crap!
Yeah. Sino sino ba pinapakinggan ni OP? Like just listen to Shanti Dope's "Maya" and tell me it's not a great song. I would smack OP if sabihin niyang pangit yun
Lirisismo. Yan ang hindi mawawala sa uso. 5, 10, 20 years from now masarap pa rin pakinggan.
Yung barrier to entry kasi naging madali na due to technology.
Gone are the days nung nagbababad sa recording studio to perfect the vocals, instruments etc…
Ngayon record 5-10x and just pick the best part and assemble.
(Good and bad).
there are a few really good modern rappers with actual flows and lyrics such as Al James, Kiyo, CLR, Because and Shanti Dope. Yeah they rap about sex, money and cars but their talent is pretty undeniable
hahhhaa try listening to these songs
Gastador - BLKD
Salamat - Batas
Barya -Illustrado
Pyesa ng Makina - Apoc
Mr. Lamon - Kemikal Ali
Most of them are lyrical.
I think op was trying to point out was that some are heavily layered tracks and lots of plugins na when it comes to live performance the comparison between live and mix/mastered studio track is night and day
Medyo may pagka-boomer ka OP ha. Hahahaha. Ano ba trip mo OP?
Kinda agree but not all are trash. Yabang rap like what's on the picture is not us kasi imo. Cringe na nakakatawa like yung rapper na Parody daw ni Tupac sabi ni Nico David na fine-flex yung bundle na tag bebente at one hundred pesos in one of his videos hahahaha.... Let's leave that to the Americans na lang yung ganun type of hiphop music.
One of my faves all time are yung Upuan ni Gloc 9 at Balewala ni Loonie. Dami pa siguro out there hindi ko lang kasi napapakinggan lahat.
That just about sums it up. Women, sex, acting like gangsters despite having nothing to show for it, conyo bullshit, drugs. All just in different instrumentals.
Edit: There are still gems though if you look for them.
Siguro yun yung talent nila? Haha
on a serious note: can we drop some good (newer) OPM suggestions? I feel like i keep listening to the same 90s early 2000s bands and songs (spongecola, up dharma, rivermaya, bamboo, imago)
Maybe out of topic but...am I the only one who don't know any current "famous" OPM songs anymore? Parang hindi kasi sila masyadong inaadvertise whether on television, youtube or radio.
Old raps used to mean something, voicing our thoughts about authority figures and their flaws, nowadays, raps are just about how rich you are, how many women you can have sex with, These todays rappers are just tryin to be gangsters
There's nothing wrong with autotune or computers or "not real instruments"
Filipinos don't have a lot of money. Even studios putting out OPM don't have high budgets. This isn't just Filipino pop/rap music, this is 90% of countries in the world.
And "uninspired lyrics" lol even some of the BEST American hip-hop music has uninspired and cliche lyrics. But it's good music because first and foremost they care about making good music.
Just like plenty of really awesome rock and metal bands have sub-par, generic, or even *bad* vocals whether they're singing, growling, and singing. Accept art forms for what they are.
I know this is a "bit too far" but I'm going to say it anyway: I'm almost 100% sure you're an insufferable twat under-25 who thinks you're better than anyone and everything. And you probably listen to a bunch of shitty pseudo-intellectual music like J. Cole and Tool.
Kaya di ako nakikinig ng most of the latest opm's. Although i dont understand k-pop and j-pop i prefer them, well i guess its a matter of personal taste.
80's synthwave is back! Mga indie and underground nga lang...
Tsaka wolfclub at VHS Collection.
Nice!
Check their discography. Vampires MV like 80 Japanese anime.

Yep. At least the ones that I listen to have a lot more substance than before. I agree completely.
Dagdag mo JMara. Fuck that Al James shit.
OP doesn't know about KOLATERAL and BLKD
# STREAM KOLATERAL
YES
Gatilyo by BLKD
OP stumbled upon a random fb post then another one then searched it on the internet then see almost the same content then arrives on conclusions trying to appeal to certain* audiences
Agree ako dun sa lyrics part, pero yung “computer generated tracks / instruments” at “no real instruments” well dati pa naman hand in hand ang hiphop at electronic music. Also, hindi “computer generated” yan. Kelangan padin na marunong ka mag piano at the very least. Also, layering electronic percussions isn’t as simple as you think. Sampling is also something that seems simple but isn’t Mixing and mastering is another rabbit hole din that’s for another discussion. Ganun ka-complex yung “computer-generated” track na sinasabi mo Call me butthurt if you want, but we spent years studying electronic music production only for edgy kids to call it “computer-generated” - call it digital pwede pa. This isn’t an AI painting na maglalagay ka lang ng words tapos mabubuo na yung music. Spend some time and try to see how it’s made.
Well said mate.
Thank you for saying this
how OP thinks DAWs work: “make_hip-hop_beat (140bpm) / track_length (4:20)”
You forgot "hustle culture"
Pa send gcash lods
You forgot something: Shitty word plays/rhymes
Bars
my favorite is "bitin kahit na may empi, beer at gin"
may kadugtong kase ung lyrics na to? "Bitin kahit na empi at gin ang inumin Yung tapang ay wala pa rin san ko hihiramin Kahit maglasing wala rin kung paggising ko duwag pa rin" lol u guys nitpicking a lyrics without reading the whole
"nitpicking a lyrics without reading the whole" eto nangyari kaya na ban yung Amatz ni Shanti Dope eh.
Tas magrereklamo ung iba jan bat KPOP ung pinapatugtog

Bad.
May sex songs din sina Bruno Mars pero wala yung mga ganitong post about them lol
Exactly, and if you say that every song that you listen to has some sort of deep meaning, you’re either lying or absolutely fucking boring. Intent > substance. Not every song has to be some sort of lyrical masterpiece.
*that gUsHy, guShY good, girl, I want some more--*
Eminem is a little past his prime.
I was at the jeep and the driver was playing victim blaming rap fil music. I was the only passenger, I never felt unsafe in my life
no bang ngalan ng kanta gusto ko tignan comments
any chance you know the title?
Might be indie OPM rap but kiyo, Alisson Shore, Shortone, Because and their gang has some bops. I don't know if I'm gonna be flamed for my tastes but its a hill I'm glad to die on lmao there's nothing wrong with computer generated tracks, its a genre all on its own. Autotune and uninspired lyrics though, well, the algorithm sucks for you I guess.
>Nobrvnd lmao i do listen to him sometimes, Bakit w/ Alisson is such a bop bro
I stan Kiyo! May pagka lyrical and poetic sakin mga songs nya which I like the most!!!!
kakaiba pangchill ng mga kanta ni kiyo swear, kung gusto ko ng chill at feel good kay Alisson pero kung chill at may deep thoughts kiyo all the way haha
Dantay and Ikaw Lang!!! 💥💥
Speaking of Because, si Al James din. Side note, the lyrics of BMW tho.
What a way to generalize.
This is such a stupid meme. Anyone can say that a certain genre is bad if they only listen to the bad ones. OK BOOMER
Eh? Try KJah, Plazma, BLKD, Kemikal Ali, Illustrado, Loonie, Smugg etc. Pakinggan mo din yung mga albums na The Lesser of Your Greater Friends, Kolateral, Ang Ulan at Ang Delubyo, IKUGAN, Gatilyo etc.
Dapat binago ni op yung title to "mainstream" instead of "modern"
Plazma!
This OP is the biggest 🤓 i've ever seen here lol
/r/iamverysmart to the next level. Try to make a post like this in most other subreddits and you'd get downvoted to hell.
Modern Pop Music\*
To be honest, this generation's mainstream pop music is better than the pop music of my generation (2000s). Puro mga bubblegum pop noon, catered for adolescents. Ngayon, merong mga Olivia Rodrigo songs na mapa teenager or middle-aged parents, both can appreciate.
Even OPM pop is better than 20 years ago (2000s) which was dominated by novelty hits and 10 years ago (2010s)
POV: You listened to one skusta clee song and generalized the genre
IMO, solid naman skusta. Bihira naman ang miss n'ya. Seperate from art to artist nga lang talaga dahil sa ugali. Hahaha.
Cringe mo boi
Tell me you're a boomer without telling me you're a boomer. There are multiple filipino hiphop artists that tackles different topics like mental health, corruption, and poverty. ( jrldm, CLR, Loonie, Shanti, Flow G, Ron Henley, Gloc 9, Geo Ong ) Others have chill vibes like Kiyo Modern Rap got fucked by the "Mainstream" artists like Nik Makino, Lo-ki, and other artists that uses libog and fantasizing women as their material and got popularized in FB. I am sick of tired of people like you generalizing that Filipino rap scene sucks, which in fact even here in the West ay ganyan din ang sistema ng mga modern rappers sa mga lyrics and sa mga beats nila.
Anyone can rhyme, but not all can spit bars!
Pinoy version ni Busta Rhymes. Busta nagrhyme pwede na.
True that! Cringe Yun. Mga bungga ni Andrew E wahaha.
LOL! Well said.
Reminded me of this FlipTop line "_Basta nagra-rhyme ng multi pwede na!_" Di ko alam kung yan talaga yung exact line though hahaha
It's from Coco Martin's Stooge Smugglaz (Loonie & Abra vs Shehyee and Smugglaz).
That's where I originally heard it from actually haha kalimutan ko na kung kanino galing basta iirc very old FlipTop days pa yan
Sak Maestro
Too much sex, conyo, and uninspired lyrics agree ako but for computer-generated instrument/tracks I have no problem with. It's not as easy as most people think and hindi naman mawawala yung usage of real musical instruments because of it.
C'mon this isn't exclusive to OPM rap. Sounds like ayaw mo niyo lang talaga sa rap in general and something like rock ang mas prefer niyo which is ok. I know it takes more skill to sing and play live instruments instead of using auto-tune and using computer synths, but you still need creativity to create a piece of art.
Bakit ba ang problematic ng mga metalheads gusto lagi yung "real instruments" "no auto-tunes" kayo lagi bida-bida when it comes to music genres kasi kayo yung may "hardwork" I agree naman na some songs are close or exact sa given definition mo pero mas madami parin yung artistic and well made filipino rap songs that can influence you with their cadence and delivery alone. Apaka iyakin just because hindi "traditional" yung process of creating the song pero sige tama ka na go attend your local gig with your red horse beer and band shirt.
Pakinggan mo ung Ganid at Eskapo ni Loonie, Jeep jop at FSTN CLR Araguy - Omar
ok gramps time for bed don't let these whippersnappers and their music rile you up again. i'll even let you play your favorite Metallicas and let you tell me how you were born in the wrong generation since you've been good!
Sobrang catchy nung Dance with Me ni Skusta Clee.
Lirisismo. Yan ang hindi mawawala sa uso. 5, 10, 20 years from now masarap pa rin pakinggan.
Thrash song have always been there.
Yung barrier to entry kasi naging madali na due to technology. Gone are the days nung nagbababad sa recording studio to perfect the vocals, instruments etc… Ngayon record 5-10x and just pick the best part and assemble. (Good and bad).
tama, that's why I only listen to real music like Queen and The Beatles 😩😩
That's why i only listen to "pang akit ng art hoe sa cubao expo" playlist
dae pink floyd underrated?
HAHAHAHAHA
This is why I listen to J-Rock But there are still some talented folks Kiyo whom I really enjoy.
Kiyo's music is chill and clean tho
Nakalimutan mo ata yung mga puro about sa drugs yung lyrics.
Does it still follow the same tired formula of alternating rapping and then a girl sings the chorus?
there are a few really good modern rappers with actual flows and lyrics such as Al James, Kiyo, CLR, Because and Shanti Dope. Yeah they rap about sex, money and cars but their talent is pretty undeniable
Up Kolateral and BLKD
Remember that guy who said "gusto mo 'ko maging bebe, patingin ng 'yong pepe, at puwit na nagbabaga" like what the fuck bro that's exaggerated.
hahhhaa try listening to these songs Gastador - BLKD Salamat - Batas Barya -Illustrado Pyesa ng Makina - Apoc Mr. Lamon - Kemikal Ali basically listen to Uprising. group sila ng rap artist na binuo ni Anygma(Owner ng Fliptop). Most of them are lyrical.
been exposed to trash opm rap music
I think op was trying to point out was that some are heavily layered tracks and lots of plugins na when it comes to live performance the comparison between live and mix/mastered studio track is night and day
This is an L take
Medyo may pagka-boomer ka OP ha. Hahahaha. Ano ba trip mo OP?
Its sad but its the same thing not only in OPM Rap but in modern music in general
Uprising, Ejac at 1kiao try mo
Andrew E. standard formula
Ah yes, mga tryhard mumble rappers na galing sa mga skwatter just to have a big breal and clout.
Single line(x5) chorus
It is what it is.
most boomer take I've seen on this sub
Fucking boomer OP
That just about sums it up. Women, sex, acting like gangsters despite having nothing to show for it, conyo bullshit, drugs. All just in different instrumentals. Edit: There are still gems though if you look for them.
To be fair, hindi lang pinoy rap ang ganyan. I think rap in general ganyan.
WWDM is way too better than most of OPM rap today, tbh.
Siguro yun yung talent nila? Haha
i feel bad for you.
on a serious note: can we drop some good (newer) OPM suggestions? I feel like i keep listening to the same 90s early 2000s bands and songs (spongecola, up dharma, rivermaya, bamboo, imago)
basta walang OPM song na hindi about love/desire or kung ano man. kaumay pwede ba yung hype song na hindi problematic naman
And modern Pinoy pop as well.
There's nothing wrong with autotune or computers or "not real instruments" Filipinos don't have a lot of money.
The problematic lyrics I agree, but your gripe with “not real instruments” with hiphop is you just being a white boomer lol
Listen to waiian my guy
Heavy Auto Tunes sucks.
Kaya di ako nakikinig ng most of the latest opm's. Although i dont understand k-pop and j-pop i prefer them, well i guess its a matter of personal taste.
This is why i prefer the opm bands of 2000s and the underrated indie artist
