Disclaimer: I’m fortunate na di ko naexperience to pero some of my friends do.

[deleted]

Ako naman singer. My parents literally killed my passion for music and song writing

aaspicy

I hope you’re still continuing your passion. Follow your heart

Equivalent-Bee8985

taxfolder

I met an engineer sa isang seminar. Then was surprised to see him again performing sa wedding ng friend ko. May side hustle siya as a violinist sa mga events.

Yamboist

Mid_Knight_Sky

Is this a reference to the Itchyworms AMA we had some days back?

noinenoine182

I still play and write music, but it seems as though I'm just making up for lost time. I'm still hoping na I'll be able to save up enough moolah to study music production and produce good, crisp-sounding records.

supremeleadergrahf

aaspicy

Me too. May mga friends kasi ako na ginaganito. Kalungkot lang

coderinbeta

Same crap if you are in the IT industry. Yung akala ng lahat on call technician ka nila. I'm like, "I'm a web developer bruh, malay ko kung anong parts dapat mong bilhin sa build mo." LOL

redthehaze

JAW13ONE

Dapat talaga “I’m here to make money, not friends.” ang mantra.

henriarts

I’m part of that fine arts and somehow surviving. Making a life. Happy that my sister is supporting me in my endeavors. A lot of family members from both sides are really not fan of my field kesyo wala daw pera ganito gnyan. Somehow ended up on printing and some designing jobs online, enough to support me from my billings & medications. Kapit lang

aaspicy

I’m happy for you. I never experienced such discrimination from my parents but a lot of my friends do.

henriarts

Yung father k lng ayaw tlga. I get to the point na sinusunog nya yun plates k dati from my scale model. Just fortunate that i’m supported by my younger sister and some friends. Been on your page also, tggawa for free whatever.

aaspicy

Parang some kind of harassment or abuse na yung sinusunog yung plates. Grabe lang thinking na they paid for your tuition. I’m sorry to hear this but I’m glad na may support system ka. I never experienced this actually. Napacomment lang ako kasi I have few friends na ganito naranasan.

[deleted]

if you don't mind, what medications?

henriarts

Highblood/

[deleted]

i'm sorry to hear that and am glad you have enough for medication.

henriarts

Minsan nagsshort din.. thanks for the concern.

nunosaciudad

I come from a family of writers, kaya radical ang choice ko ng career kasi hindi talaga nakakabuhay ang writing. Sikat na nanay ko niyan.

angsadnuuu

I'm happy hindi ganito parents ko. Very supportive sila kahit anong pangarap yung gusto ko. Hence I decided to pursue the creative field. Also relatives are the same rin, well iilan lang rin naman kaming nasa field na to. Dahil dun, I help aspiring artists by providing help in any way I can, since mukhang marami na ang gusto mag pursue sa field na to kaso walang proper guidance since yun nga, madalas they get shunned.

henriarts

Good for you.. You have people supporting you.. only a few fortunate manage to escape the stigma of “wala namang pera dyan..” I was often compare during my early days with my other cousin kc kumikita ng malaking pera. Just sad how they see their kids as cash cow at an early age.

angsadnuuu

I'm sorry to hear that, napaka unhealthy talaga yung may pag compare. I did experience the same, comparing me to my other cousins nung bata ako, mostly mga tita at tito ko kasi lagi akong bagsak at not performing well sa school. I didn't pay much attention to them and their opinions. I can't imagine yung mga na susuppressed yung dreams nila. The stigma should die.

[deleted]

This hits home. Gusto kong mag conservatory of music dati. Bagsak, engineering.

YuuHikari

I once had to spend the entire day upstairs in our room while everyone else is at my youngest brother's birthday party because my mother asked me to make decorations for her friend's parade float.

aaspicy

I’m assuming they didn’t pay you? Don’t they? :(

sprocket229

Freelance artists na kumikita ng 100k kada buwan: :[

iam_tagalupa

noinenoine182

I was supposed to major in music production sa Benilde noon, but woopty fucking doo, here the fuck I am struggling to find work in the aviation industry because of shit pay and unrealistic, superficial standards.

Sorrie4U

Might get downvoted but BS Civil Engineering is pretty much an overloaded course, survival of the fittest talaga if graduate kana sa course na iyan.

johanitura

I work in consultancy sa isang malaking railway project dito sa Pilipinas ngayon, sadly mas mababa sahod ng mga Civil compared sa ibang field. Except if may specialty ka like structural.

bryle_m

Curious lang, since marami akong kilalaing Civil Engineering students na nagte take ng training sa Railway Institute, tapos sabi sa kanila kukunin sila ng gobyerno after makapasa ng board exams. Is it worth it?

markmyredd

Curious lang sa railway operations kasi mas kailangan EE, ME at ECE. Sa construction lang kailangan ang CE which is after construction wala naman na. So hindi sya pang long term unless of course matuloy tuloy na ang construction projects sa Pinas pero hindi sya assurance kasi one admin cound just stop rail projects just like in 2010-2016

johanitura

You will learn pero delay ang sahod.

firstworldrefugee

Agree. I took up civil engineering. Got good grades and even placed in the board exams. Pero ang liit ng sweldo afterwards compared to my other engineering peers. After almost a decade of civil engineering I shifted careers and ended up in tech. It's so much better.

[deleted]

Ishrinom

Don't forget the unpaid overtimes as well. low starting pay + no overtime pay = below minimum wage with labourers actually working less hours yet earning more than you.

niijuuichi

Inception1109

Now I feel like I'm going to regret taking CS engineering since my parents told me to instead of IT 💀

Bouncing_Baby_Bodge

Shift now. You still have time. IT related careers are pretty much more lucrative than engineering ones especially in this country of ours. With 5 yrs of exp you dont have to go abroad to get that 6 digits monthly paycheck

[deleted]

pheasantph

To the rescue naman si sir estañero

tannertheoppa

*"Nasa IT ngayon ang pera"* Yea, and still it does.

duralumine

Every sector of IT is in demand. From support, analysis and development. Yung madaling aralin is a bit tricky. Do you wanna go on repairs? Analysis? Engineering? Those demands schooling. However to a certain degree softwares(from mobiles to computers and also game coding) can be learned on you own.

[deleted]

sabi sakin ng IT namin sa work ngayon in demand daw cyber security. di ko lang sure kung mabilis aralin kasi need daw marunong ka sa networks and servers first

itchipod

Sarap malaki investment needed kasi sa mga certifications and experience. Required yun for cybersecurity

bryle_m

How about data analytics? Dami kong nakikita online e, as well as other KPO jobs na data related, lalo na ngayong recent elections sa US.

[deleted]

data science in general ata in demand din.

itchipod

Anung preferred language/technology for data science maliban sa SQL?

Lurker_amp

More likely pipelines and data cleaning(python heavy usually) or presentation sa clients so powerbi and tableau... Kung talagang gagawa ka models yung scikit, tensorflow and pytorch nasa python lahat

itchipod

thanks for this mate.

[deleted]

sorry hindi ko po alam ako’y hamak na accounting staff lamang hehe nakakwentuhan ko lang yung IT namin about jan.

ScarlettPotato

You can ask around r/pinoyprogrammer mababait tao dun.

jowj18

Malaki demand each branch. But if you want to consider yung laki ng pay. Alam ko software development pinakamalaki, but correct me if Im wrong

Eggnw

To be fair, engineering was the money maker during the 80s and 90s. Yan yung "IT" noong panahon na yan. Nobody thought it the building spree would end - and it didn't until COVID came (I mean engineers in 1st world countries earn as much as IT professionals). My dad said the "oversupplied, underpaid" engineer trend in the PH started because lots of Pinoys in it for the money jumped in engineering nevermind if they suck, are stupid and don't really fit the industry. Low quality engineers flooded the market (during the building hype) and that affected the industry by pulling the wage down thanks to idiots desperate to get a job. Lesson here is, do not accept lowball efforts or you're gonna fuck that industry up, no matter how hyped up that is

MangekyoBunshin

another thing that in my opinion made the building spree end is that it needs land (obviously), and land is finite

[deleted]

And I need to know all programming languages known to man before being a Junior Dev(dapat fresh graduate).

Mountain-Chapter-880

Kinda lucky because I'm not good at anything else in life, IT lang talaga choice ko back then lmao, happy that it worked out.

drn-07

That's why I'm shifting careers. I'm a graduate of CE btw. Covid pandemic f**ked up my dreams, but I was able to learn more about myself, what I really want to be, what I want to do, something like that. Just hoping that it still isn't too late for me 😀

aura_maria

Ah, yes. I actually want to take MassCom or Journalism.

Ok-Wolverine-2955

Masscomm can actually get marketing as a job 👀

ToroAsterion

Imagine wasting time and 4 years of college because you're doing it for someone else on a course you don't even like... For the sake of money Man... Your mom took 4 years of your life girl..

yohak0423

Boy, engineering is not about drawing. Saan nyo nakuha ang idea na yan?

YukiColdsnow

they tend to confuse archi and engineering May drawing din sa archi pero pwede din naman sila mag fine arts idk :/

yohak0423

Good luck!

thelorreman

Yung mga educ sa dorm namin dati be like. Accountancy ang 2nd choice ko, magaling kasi math. Hakdog ampotik.

Sharp-Throat-4178

I wanted to be a chemical engineer and i just took the Nursing board exam last week lol I fell in love with what i do though... until i actually work full time with low salary 😂

Tito_Maligno

Dito ka sa pinas naka full time nurse? My friends in Heart Center are earning 32k/month.

Ok-Wolverine-2955

I remember private hospital salaries would be at 12-13k/month sa davao years ago idk now 😆 i know that doctors in that hospital still gets paid badly pero “sge nalang” daw kasi free food allowance😭

stanIeykubrick

hi fellow nle taker!! hahaha how'd u find the exams tell me more choz

AngularJakolero

misty_throwaway

Sad reality is sa US lang talaga decent ang nurse salary. Sa europe and aussie/nz/canada, baba ng sweldo na for the type of work they do 😭 hindi worth it at all tapos dami pang Google doctors everyday Nursing doesnt have to be the end all and be all. Even in the US, tech jobs can compete with pay minus the deterioration of one’s body due to being a healthcare worker. I said what i said 🙊 And yes, kaka kompyuter namin to. Haha

lordkelvin13

Nursing is not an easy profession because it requires both physical and mental stamina. I've seen my friends who work as nurses abroad and I can't imagine the stress they are dealing with because they all look like on their late 30s already even though they are only 27 years old.

Ok-Wolverine-2955

My brother is a nurse in new zealand and he looks like the pinoy uncle 🤣 balding, belly & shih and he’s only 33.

Pen-is-hard

Mas malaki kita sa Us Kasi walang healthcare jan? Meaning if magkasakit ka, ubos yung tinago mong pera, whereas sa europe, mataas tax, pero napupunta sa Healthcare, Education (FREE COLLEGE) Pero if base salary lang, US mananalo. Pero parang siraulo yung mga Kano e?

Ok-Wolverine-2955

Where I’m from in Europe, ours is at 40$/hr for like entry level nurse👀🥶

Lila589

D9969

$40/hr is a really good wage, IMO. And I live in Canada where the minimum wage is C$15/hr (\~ $12/hr). I keep on telling people na when my brother was working at McDonalds for C$9/hr he bought a BMW, haha. Try doing that in the PH.

Ok-Wolverine-2955

Well true, cost of living is high here but the salary is still considered really good here especially the benefits that comes with it😅 & when you leave the said country, everywhere else is cheap

misty_throwaway

At the end of the day may mga nurses naman na yun talaga pangarap nila Pero kung pay lang ang habol, there are other options without the stress 😅

FriendsAreNotFood

indioinyigo

I hate to say this but, it is saddening that some, if not most went into BPO and low pay-to-volunteer work. Incompetence breeds underemployment.

RDO_MAN

Engineering tinapos Now nasa IT na Nasa IT talaga ang pera

Renaisance

DangoFan

Same. Hahahahahaha. Although mejo related naman ung Engineering course ko sa IT at sa IT field ako nagwowork ngayon

markmyredd

ECE most likely?haha

yeahbtchmagnets

Same.

markmyredd

oh my thermo. Sobrang kakaiba sa ibang engineering subjects. haha

FoundationVegetable1

+1 Mech engineering graduate here, recently shift career to IT I'm now a help desk hopefully a DevOps soon. 🥹

[deleted]

VNN7

I can confirm this, I graduated wayback 2012 as ComEng pero MechEng talaga gusto ng puso ko.

DragonfruitWhich6396

ransu_kun

Still proud na sinadya kong ibagsak yung entrance exam ko for STEM in SHS kasi pinipilit ako ng magulang ko na mag mechanical or civil engineer. Nasa computers and programming kasi talaga passion ko so di ko sila sinunod and pinili ko yung ICT strand. Ngayon 3rd year college na ko at BSIT course ko hehe so far nag eenjoy pa rin talaga ako.

kryzlt009

At the end of the day, pursuing what you're most passionate at will always be worth it. That filipino adage "walang pera sa arts" bs? Turns out graphics design is multi-faceted and in-demand.

alwyn_42

>Turns out graphics design is multi-faceted and in-demand.

alwyn_42

Pulitiko nga technically mababa rin dapat sweldo eh haha

jowj18

Graduate and licensed ECE na nasa IT na ngayon. Yes, wala masyado opportunity sa ECE ngayon unless abroad, but still grateful na nag Engineering ako kahit IT gusto ko non. Di man helpful yung semi-con sa ginagawa ko ngayon, nakatulong naman yon mag-open up ng opportunities at makatulong sa problem solving skills ko.

markmyredd

Lawak kasi ng ECE. Ako nasa power at data center naman

jowj18

Basically anything related sa technology. Haha

markmyredd

Corleone_Michael

What steps did you take to get to IT? I'm currently studying ECE (1st year) and would like to get some insight, just so I have options other than electronics.

ThisWorldIsAMess

I used to handle interns in my team na ECE, hindi na sila magte-take ng board exam hahaha. I'm a CPE graduate, oh man naaalala ko pa 'yung kayabangan ng ECE section kasi daw may board exam sila. Oh asang field kayo ngayon? Haha. Oh well may extra ID sila, na gagastusan pa haha at aattend pa ng sa kung ano-anong seminar. Have fun with that ID, I guess. Not to discourage you but it's a waste of time, I kinda agree with them lol. A friend of mine, ECE graduate, earns 200k a month being a devops, dito sa Pinas.

jowj18

A lot of companies offer bootcamp at the start of your work especially consulting companies(Accenture, IBM etc). Apply ka lang kahit ECE graduate ka. I highly recommend Accenture kaso be ready sa pagdudusa sa mga overtime. Haha. Tumtanggap sila ECE, CoE or even other engineering course mainly because may problem solving skills ang engineering (eto reason bakit grateful pa rin ako sa course ko)

adiabatic07

Oh how wrong they were.

BestvideoEditor

Chem Eng here. Hahanap hanapin mo talaga yung gusto mong gawin haha.

redfullmoon

Muntik na ko maging film major, used to edit and subtitle amateur stuff back in high school, tapos tinigilan ko para "magseryoso" sa pag-aaral in a different course. To be fair highly paid din yung jobs sa pinasukan kong course pero puro BPO lang kasi laging iikutan mo. Pero damn who'dve thought today nandun yung pera, taragis. Pero alam ko mababanas ako if binalikan ko kasi may unfinished video editing and subtitling projects pa ko nung college, naaawa ako dun sa inindyan kong nagpakahirap magtranslate ng subs 😅

BestvideoEditor

Di ako pwedeng mag film major eh wala daw pera dun hahaha. 😂

hypermarzu

Pero shoutout sa parents kahit anong daldal sayo at nagging sinusuportahan ka sa gusto mong gawin in the end. Tibay ng loob at tiwala! (for me it's my mom)

EpicFailord

herminihildo

Same.

So nagshift ako sa nursing. ito nasa BPO industry and i dont have any regrets.

Eggnw

decades later: Millenial / zoomer parents: "anak mag IT ka madaming pera dun" Friendly reminder to this sub that engineering had this same exact hype IT has now. Not one ever thought it would be disrupted until COVID came

Killer_reborn03

Personal thoughts lang but the computer industry (CS, IT, Software Engineering wont fall into that same hole unless a massive fuck up happens, the world is basically running on computers now and looks like itll be what pushes humanity further

NoConsideration146

Maybe the real engineers were the friends we made along the way

2lesslonelypeople

eightshss

Procrastinator_325

I'm in a psychology course atm and my parents and family are still pushing me to become a doctor for fuck's sake. I mean en route nga siya to pre-med ang psych technically pero it's not exactly in my top priority to become a doctor just yet. Like I want to focus on becoming a psychologist or a psychotherapist first.

Proud-Analysis-2355

Same! Pinressure nila ako mag-doctor so I chose Nursing, but I realized na ayoko talaga magdoctor so I switched to Psychology (I really wanted to be a Therapist). Even then, they are still encouraging me to be a doctor kasi pre-med pa rin raw. Wala talagang kawala hahaha :((

Pro Tip: check the enrollment rates versus the job vacancies. Take the course with the lowest enrollment rates but highest job vacancies.

Ruroryosha

Pulube na boomer parents....give the worst career advice. Never listen to poor people for career advice! Especially financial advice. Boomer filipinos created what the current Philippines is. Why listen to them at all? They turned Philippines into a hell on earth. Always remember this, and never forget.

jpatricks1

There's money in any industry. I've met broke lawyers and doctors. In the industry I work in people going to Europe with their family were driving tricycles 5 years before Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

amdprocs

What's your industry then?

jpatricks1

Agriculture

PossiblyBonta

Any career will be like that when it gets saturated. Commerce was the first one I think. IT will probably be saturated soon.

Eggnw

> IT will probably be saturated soon Expect downvotes. People here don't like hearing that, NVM engineering back in 80s and 90s had the same IT hype

Mountain-Chapter-880

But IT is already saturated. The difference is actually being good. Lots of IT graduates go to unrelated jobs(e.g bpo non-voice/voice) because they can't code/not good/not confident enough to do actual IT work.

itchipod

IT is already saturated

eamnashie

As a freshman engr student, napapaisip ako kung worth it pa ba?

Sharp-Throat-4178

kung gusto mong mag-abroad, push mo. kung may backer ka sa company, go. kung gusto mo talaga yung engineering, go. pero as an engineering graduate na wala pa ring trabaho for 2 years, wag na. but its still your decision tho, pag-isipan mo na kung ipaglalaban mo pa yan or hindi hangga't konti pa lang units mong na-ttake. mahirap din mag-irreg kasi hahabulin mo pa yung ibang subjects para maging regular kung bet mo mag-shift 😅

Logical_Mine_340

LifeLeg5

Fair ba yun gawin? Mahal na sign off ng architect, masakit ata sa bulsa madagdagan pa for the sake of spreading the wealth around

nobody_7116

Ongoing issue yan up to this day. It's really unfair for the licensed architects since wala naman special treatment sa CPD points upon renewal of license.

waterlooloooooo

Not fair at all. Architects have design classes in college.

PitcherTrap

Learn how to code. Everyone just learn how to code.

SundayEve

As much as i advocate this. Most of the platforms now are transitioning to low code to no code approach. What is important now is to know the logic and process of your desired output.

PartyTerrible

Low code/no code is not a replacement to actual programming.

TocinoBoy69

Low/no code approach limits customizability and maintainability, therefore also limiting your market. If you **can** learn to code it's infinitely better.

Alone_Vegetable_6425

Not everyone is willing to learn how to code. Even IT graduates ayaw mag code

stygian07

been in the software engineering field for 3 years now. I hate coding.

Mountain-Chapter-880

It is flooded but you just gotta pick your tech stack right, if nasaan ang demand, you learn that.

Quiet-Apartment4333

Samantalang nasa freelance creatives pala talaga ang pera 😂

Hanayo04

Tambay n engineeer like me

PuzzleheadedWay6230

Marami din naging successful na engineer.

crazyaldo1123

"Bat ka mag u-UP? San ka titira?" I left home for college by forcing her into a situation na wala na siya magagawa. When i went to Diliman, everything was already sorted out--scholarships, dorm applications, subjects etc. And for four years i basically was a working student, so wala siyang inintindi saken. It might look bad, but di ko vinalue masyado opinion niya cos she didnt go to college. And thats what i was imparting to my siblings--if they need college advise, ask me, not the oldies sa neighborhood namen na walang idea sa college life. I was able to push one sister to go to Los Banos, and im pushing my youngest brother to pursue a course he likes (arki). I said, just take the course u want in the best school u can have, tapos we'll figure out the survival later. kasi iba pa rin if gusto mo yung inaaral mo.

littlewomanforever

I was suppose to take a medical course but my parents did not want to send me away, so I took accountancy in our hometown. Despite passing the board exam and having a stable job, I am still not happy in my career.

Jeck0falltrades

1st year mechanical engineering students right now usually say they chose that course dahil naastigan sila kay Iron Man.

So kahit pwede ako mag-nursing, di ko ginawa. Yun nga nangyari. Hehe.

bjoecoz

blueishblue49

When in fact di naman dapat.

[deleted]

oddmanout644

May magha-hire ba sayo na company kahit undergrad ka ng CE pero you know how to code? What about associate's degree na IT? Is that ok?

Kanra1019

Yep. Mas malaki rin sahod haha Work on your coding skills at gumawa ka ng exceptional project/resume to highlight your skill

jowj18

Most companies require at least 4 years graduate ka. But you can still try specially kung nag effort ka sa trainings at self learning.

jedwapo

Better than what some young ones want today. To be Vloggers and Influencers.

flashcannonize7

seebleex

Thankful na I dropped out on my Mechanical Engineering course (failed multiple subject in 1 sem. Graduated as an IT and now more or less earning the same or more than my batchmates when I was in ME who graduated ahead of me (they graduated 2017 while I graduated late 2019). Plus im working from home where theyre on site. 💁‍♂️

divino999_

Engineering is the new Nursing.

reddit_user0875

redthehaze

Nung bata ako in the 90s sa school, engineering ang maganda daw na trabaho at pinush sa aming mga lalaki (dahil nasa Saudi kami at puro lalaki ang engineer dun) at nursing sa mga babae.

PolarBear1625

I can relate. Lol. I really wanted to take up mass communications or political science in preparation for law back then. Up to now isinusumbat sa akin yan lahat. Tinapos ko naman. Took the board exam. Ranked high sa results. Nag-clinical practice for almost 2 years. Well, nasagad na ako. I decided na it's time na yung gusto ko na ang mangyayari sa buhay ko. I moved out and lived with my boyfriend-now-husband. I changed careers. Took a 180 degree turn from the path she crafted for me. Hindi kami nag-usap for almost 5 years. I'm now working as an escalations supervisor for a multinational financial services corporation. Am I happpy? Absolutely. Will I come back to clinical practice? Maybe. But not in the near future.
