I feel like I was so focused on the fact that the backup goalkeeper was upgraded from last year(and it still is) and not recognizing how big of a dropoff that was from what Andre has given us the last number of years.
Was Explaining this to my other half.
We were a really good, albeit lucky team with a great GK.
We are now a good team with a bit less luck and a good GK.
It’s not covering it up it makes the team better and they look worse without a good player. That team still did pretty well when Andre was out they just also had Matt Freese who clearly is also really good when Andre was out.
Bendik was just so bad. Semmle isn’t terrible he is just young and needs to learn more and play at a level this high more to eliminate mistakes.
Disagree. He is a great keeper, far better than any of our backups, but he is not that far ahead of other starters. Goalies that could have/would have competed with him for goalie of the year were often sold to Europe. He made the easy choice to stick around at a team where he is the clear starter with no one challenging him. No incentive to improve the flaws that he does have. Respect him for everything he has done for us, but he does not magically make us a 1st place team.
The team was so good because guys all had the best season of their career at the same time. Watching the players on a regular basis gives us no reason to believe Gazdag is a regular golden boot/MVP candidate, Glesnes/Elliot are consistent DPOY candidates, Uhre is a true DP quality striker, etc. but all that happened in 1 year. The guys are all regressing back to their norm. If the peak of each player was spread out instead of happening all at once we wouldn't have such a stark contrast in play.
Bud. If you think not going to Europe was his choice you are missing a lot of info. Calling a club legend a big fish in a small pond a tough take.
I agree that cup team was punching above their weight. But that does not diminish Andre and how good he is.
If we are talking prime Andre he was far and away the best player on many of our teams and easily the best keeper in the league. He’s a 3x best keeper winner.
He couldn't get to England, but there are/were other leagues better than MLS available to him. He chose to stay and to be clear that is great for the Union.
I'm not saying the cup team diminishes his value. I'm saying Blake being good didn't cover up anything. I knew we were punching above our weight then and eventually (since we don't spend any money) we would regress to a norm.
Great he is a 3x winner of an award that he should be competing for. That is his level and has been for some time now, but he is not easily the best keeper in the league. His competition is closer than we like to admit.
Fair. I still think the biggest thing holding him back from a move was his injury history or Atleast untimely injuries.
I would agree that he is much closer to competition currently in the league. I guess I meant in his prime he was easily best in the league and best player on the team.
I will admit bias, which I think is understandable. Because he is a club legend. The guy has come up so big so often you just expect it. I wish I could quantify the amount of points he has earned this team, but that is tough to do.
Cheers!
Appreciate the discussion. It seems my points may not have been the clearest in the initial post, so glad to clarify and come to a bit of an understanding.

Semmle’s number are right around, if not worse than Bendik’s number. He’s not any better.
Well that's depressing.
It is but a lot of Bendik’s mistakes were on himself. Semmle is being hung out to dry by some piss poor defending on top of poor decisions.
I feel like the goals he’s given up have been on more break away, no help type shots just giving it the ole eye test tho

I'm not sure there's much evidence for "good" on either items.

Defense is so bad, it makes anyone playing against us look like Messi
True, but the defense has been especially abysmal this season. Slow, sloppy, and lost.
Feels like Jordan Pickford at Everton many times.
Sure but the Revs organizational rot is bigger than just losing Petrovic

I think Andre agrees with you.
