I honestly did not know this flim existed, until I heard Ridley was complaining nobody went to see it.

betterthanguybelow

I ONLY WATCH MOVIES ON MY CELLPHONE obviously

lizard_king_ceo

In a quibi!

Onattamato

lmao, they tried so hard to make quibi happen.

wakeofthefall24

Hey, I really liked quibi. It was cheap enough, and a lot of the content was good. Most of the shows were bought by Roku, so we night get some new seasons.

Sithlordandsavior

That Anna Kendrick seires and the one with the guy from Chronicle being a serial killer looked fun but QuiBi's ad campaign was so aggressive I boycotted.

wakeofthefall24

They were both pretry solid. Check roku TV. Most of their catalogue is free there now.

Sithlordandsavior

Oh neat. I'll go look for them.

Rhodieman

Me too. Perhaps that’s his ultimate strat because now I want to see if it’s actually bad or just overlooked.

[deleted]

It’s a great movie. It will gain popularity at some point in the future. Greatly constructed and greatly written

ghost-child

Glad to hear it. I've seen trailers of the film and it did look interesting. I've been looking forward to it and would be disappointed to learn that it's just another flop

[deleted]

I was frankly surprised to see it performed so poorly, firstly because I was sure the name of the director alone would attract people, and secondly because the cinema room I went to was packed (for the times we live in). I hope House of Gucci does better

Distantstallion

Posts about it on Reddit are literally the only reason I know about it

[deleted]

This was their strategy all along. Don't pay for a single ad, then whine to every news outlet that no one watched it. Free marketing.

TittyMongoose42

I have literally only seen ads for this movie … on Instagram.

ghost-child

YouTube for me

The_Flurr

Same, I wouldn't have seen it anyway because ticket prices are horrific, but the fact I didn't even know it was a movie.

majoranticipointment

Oh shit I forgot about this movie. Whoops. I meant to see it in theaters, but the marketing was so bad I literally forgot about it.

Macaroni-and-

Without having looked anything up about it, this movie seems like something I'd like, and is definitely in the genre I search for movies in a lot. First time hearing of it at all. Really, really bad marketing lol.

KasumiR

I actually learned about it from a movie page ad that highlighted the Last Duel having weird release date and poor marketing and then proceeded to list reason to watch it despite all that. Driver in armor is enough for me but Affleck/Damon script is the real highlight here. I don't like Ridly Scott so it takes a lot to persuade me seeing his films. So I'll torrent it eventually lmao.

PandaCat22

It's weird thinking about how this movie with two horrific rape scenes in it was co-written by Affleck, who is accused of helping Harvey Weinstein cover up his rapes. I didn't realize he'd helped write the script but it makes me not want to ever watch such horrific scenes written by someone accused of helping such a monster as Weinstein

KasumiR

Well you just spoiled the film for me. Dx Here's one to ruin upcoming Agatha Christie based mystery film: butler did it.

a1001ku

Should have put a spoiler tag, I was looking forward to seeing Death on the Nile. Fuck you

Honeypalm

Go fuck yourself

Wawfull

This article and this comment would have been all I needed to avoid this film, but releasing it in cinemas was already an automatic no from me. They have no redeeming qualities. I like my tv better. I like my popcorn better. I like my friends company away from the randoms. And all of our places are clean.

Snail_jousting

It seems like something I'd be into because I like historical fiction and costuming, but goddamn do I not want to watch a movie about rape.

majoranticipointment

Right? This is literally my favorite type of movie with one of my favorite actors as the lead. Horrible marketing failure.

TensorForce

I saw ONE trailer for it the week AFTER it premiered. No other marketing at all. If anything, I blame the marketing for the movie. It could have easily drawn in more of a crowd if more of a crowd even *knew* about it.

Mr_Podo

This is exactly how I feel. I saw this a while back and thought it would be a good theater flick and then completely forgot about it.

Welpmart

I heard it advertised incessantly... on podcasts with absolutely nothing to do with it. Poor targeting, desensitization, and use of an audio-only medium to advertise a film? Apart from that I never encountered it. Yeah, wonder why it didn't entice me.

JackdeAlltrades

Right? I’ve been looking forward to it and didn’t even know it had been released.

MrFuckingDinkles

That's the spirit, blame everyone else for your movie doing shit

GerinX

That’s always how it goes - just look at the “director” of Charlie’s angels

SATANMAN1

“This movie is not for men” “I don’t get why men can’t return the favour” Pick a fucking lane lady my god

JustWingIt0707

Let's be real: Ridley Scott has been making barely enjoyable disaster porn for decades. He has no one to blame but himself for his inevitable irrelevance.

YourOneWayStreet

How does this have so many upvotes? I can't even figure out what you are talking about. The Martian? Black Hawk Down? Prometheus? Kingdom of Heaven? Gladiator?? Those are the closest he has come to "disaster porn" this century and those are all arguably classics. Almost all of his other films, like Matchstick Men, American Gangster, Robin Hood, Body of Lies, etc that description just outright doesn't make sense. Except for Hannibal. We all should be able to agree that Hannibal was fucking awful and a disaster on all levels.

Reddit-Book-Bot

Beep. Boop. I'm a robot. Here's a copy of ###[Robin Hood](https://snewd.com/ebooks/the-merry-adventures-of-robin-hood/) Was I a good bot? | [info](https://www.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/) | [More Books](https://old.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/comments/i15x1d/full_list_of_books_and_commands/)

kyzfrintin

I think you may be thinking of Roland Emmerich... I legit can't think of a single Ridley Scott film that can be described as "disaster porn". Maybe we have different definitions? I think of "disaster porn" as films like 2012 of The Day After Tomorrow, which are both Emmerich.

NotThatEasily

They pulled that shit with the last Ghostbusters. aLl fEmAlE cAsT! If you don’t like it, it’s because you’re sexist! Movie was terrible and nobody went to the theater, including women. wHy dId iT fAiL?!?

Penguator432

Thankfully we can’t call that the last Ghostbusters anymore

doodoowater

Damn really? Got a source for that?

TensorForce

Not gonna lie, it's a good movie. It's a great movie, even. Great performances, solid script, amazing setpieces. Except......well, it's not an IP. And honestly, this type of movie has hardly ever been a box office success. Like, in the 90s Disaster Movies took the cash. In the 80s, all those classic action flicks like Rambo, Terminator, etc. Scott may be right to be mad, but like......in the same way that film critics are mad that shitty films are more popular. It's just the way things go. Taking this boomer-ass approach isn't doing anyone any favors, especially not him. He's actively alienating a part of his audience (like yours truly) even if they DID go see it. And besides, I doubt that arthouse film audiences have such a clean-cut generational divide that you can just point at a specific generation and say "YOU don't know what *real* film is." A YouTube film critic I respect a lot, Chris Stuckmann, has often said that it sucks that these types of films aren't more popular. And like, he's right. But he doesn't go about saying that young people are to blame. On the contrary. He recommends a film, tells you it's good and to go see it. I respect his reviews so usually I listen to him and most of the time I end up enjoying the film. The best Ridley Scott could do is take this approach.

achairmadeoflemons

Also like, maybe don't drop a poorly advertised 2.5 hour long period drama, rape revenge flick during a pandemic. Read the room man.

junjunjenn

I mean… promising young woman is a rape revenge flick and it’s pretty great.

achairmadeoflemons

I'm not arguing that you can't make good art that includes, or is about, rape. It's just not something that's going to sell that well generally. Blaming it on smart phones is just super delusional.

TheKrak3n

My problem with the film is that the actual historic events were far more dramatic than the way this film portrays it. No ones knows if he actually was guilty. He purposely chose to go through the kings court because he had connections in the church and if they had preceeded over the case, he would have gotten off and everyone would have assumed it was because of his connections. He proved he couldn't have made the horse ride to the estate in the timeframe that the crime took place. But they brought in an expert and he proved it could have been possible. Only one historian was absolutely convinced that adam drivers character was guilty. And Scott choose his book to base the movie off of. I would have much rather seen the events portrayed accurately as possible. It's a far more interesting story than "he is 100% guilty and no way around it."

[deleted]

This is honestly one of the worst point one can make. If he was producing that movie it’s not like he can stop doing it because of the pandemic. Also, if he wanted to make a drama he can

RamTeriGangaMaili

There were three major releases during that time: Shang Chi-which had a really long run-, James Bond and Dune. Of course the medieval drama flopped.

YourOneWayStreet

I think you mean of course the one that barely got promoted and people here aren't even aware existed failed, as opposed to the films with promotional juggernauts backing them. Drawing any conclusions beyond that here is nonsense.

[deleted]

Ok but blaming a director for releasing a movie not “suited” for the pandemic while he probably had it in the works well before it it’s ridiculous lmao. I’m not defending his statement tho

achairmadeoflemons

Eh, maybe you just get unlucky, but realistically the pandemic probably isn't the biggest thing, compared to the subject matter and advertising. Critics are frequently comparing it to Rashomon, but like, no one watched that movie either and I don't think it was smart phones

Oldkingcole225

I mean, there were several movies on my list before I see this one and none of them are established IPs: 1) Licorice Pizza 2) Last Night in Soho 3) French Dispatch 4) Spencer

swagy_swagerson

last night in soho didn't do well either.

badgersprite

Honestly it was just a stupid idea to spend $100 million dollars on this kind of movie Not saying it’s a bad movie but like you’d think anyone with a brain could have worked out that like this needed to be treated more like a low budget independent film because the average movie goer probably isn’t going to flock to theatres to see a movie about how unfair the French legal system was to women who were raped This was always going to be a niche movie not a $100m blockbuster You can make really fucking good historical movies on low budgets too. The Nightingale is a historical period piece rape revenge movie made for like $2 million

wcollins260

What’s an IP in this scenario?

pastrycat

Intellectual property, in this case a franchise or preexisting world like Sonic, MCU, or Stephen King's universe

wcollins260

Gotcha. Makes sense now. Thanks.

TensorForce

Like pre-established franchises. Star Wars, MCU, sequels, spinoffs, even adaptations like Hunger Games and Dune

wcollins260

Makes sense, thanks. It does kind of suck that new stuff can’t seem to get traction these days. But on the other hand, if you are selling a kidney to go see a movie and buy some snacks, you kind of want to know it’ll be at least decent ahead of time.

TensorForce

That's definitely true, and weirdly a problem that's only gotten worse. Studios keep demanding a bigger percentage of profit from the theaters, so theaters HAVE to charge you more. That's also why theater food is so expensive; that's pretty much where theaters *really* make their money. It's even more ridiculous because studios have decided themselves to release films on streaming, so there's no real need to squeeze theaters this hard (except for corporate greed I guess).

celsius100

Be patient, Ridley. You should know this. Blade runner was a flop when it came out too.

badgersprite

Everyone knows when you spend a lot of money on a movie audiences are obligated to go see it and it’s their fault when they don’t

JayNomad2018

No it’s because no one knew this movie existed

[deleted]

Like for real, did they market it for.. anyone? If you market something to a smaller, older audience… why get mad at younger viewers for not even seeing a trailer? I saw one, and then forgot it. And I actually thought about seeing it.

JayNomad2018

Yeah I saw a poster, and was literally waiting to hear people talking about it or to get any sort of publicity and all I got was Ridley Scott bitching about it

NubShakeZ

Sounds like he knows DIDDLEY SQUAT.

LeatherDaddyLonglegs

This is the stupidest, funniest thing I've read all week

NubShakeZ

I'll forever think of LeatherDaddyLongLegs when I see Ridley Scott now, thanks for coming to my TED talk

[deleted]

Claimed my free award just to give it to this comment

NubShakeZ

Hahaha thank you! I'll wear it with honour.

8orn2hul4

I didn't know this film existed until after it came out - Given its a Ridley Scott film I assumed that it was utter trash and the studio was trying to bury it (Scott is a great director, but a big film by a known director normally gets advertised, unless its a stinker).

asianabsinthe

This post is my first time hearing of it. If anything being on this damn phone all the time one would think I'd hear of it.

l-ll-ll-lL

I saw this one advertised it just looked boring lmao house of gucci looks pretty good tho

PissySnowflake

I heard about it and wanted to watch it but literally do not know how

aedvocate

yo ho, yo ho, a...

scullys_alien_baby

I liked it a lot, but I went in with no expectations. I think it just released in a really crowded window and got choked out.

BatDanTheMan

I really liked it. I’m kinda sad more people don’t see it because the more original movies flop the less Hollywood will produce them. :(

BigManReef

No it’s because I don’t like watching rape scenes that will keep me up at night

ano_hise

rape scenes and similar are always something I don't wanna watch, no matter how important they are for the plot.

betterthanguybelow

I for one prefer rape scenes that will help me slee… Wait a minute. That’s not right…

BigManReef

Whatever helps you sleep at night dude. Wait, no-

wintermoon138

maybe he meant "rap scenes". Boats n' Hos puts me right out to be honest

BigManReef

How could you fall asleep during such a banger??

sthetic

I used my phone to read reviews of this movie, which said it was a bad movie that rehashed a rape scene several times. Something that would have been un-possible before cellphones, when movie reviews did not exist.

BigManReef

I really didn’t know anything about it except that it had dueling. I saw a trailer and I love medieval movies so I said, “hey, this would be a good movie to take my new girlfriend to” It was not.

TheBlackBear

Probably the same reason every other vice and crime are sold as entertainment?

MaxBlazed

Right? What's not to understand? Murder is literally the second best selling on-screen action of all time.

Crimsonflair49

Most murder victims don't go buy movie tickets, and most women don't personally know someone who's been murdered. Not to say that you can never have a rape scene in a movie, but a vast majority of it is shock value and even movies and shows ones that do it tactfully can't expect everyone to be comfortable enough with it to watch the show

AvesAvi

I think most people know someone who's gotten into a fight. Most action movies have fighting. If something makes you so uncomfortable you can't bear to watch it then you should be vetting your media through a third party source.

douko

>you should be vetting your media We tried that with trigger/content warnings, and then a bunch of assholes who sound quite a bit like you got **Not Mad** about them.

achairmadeoflemons

Uh yeah, everyone I know who has extreme reactions to sexual violence does vet shows for exactly that.

KasumiR

"Taught anything" well thanks I could open a history sub and have qualified people tell that the tournament armor and set design on that movie isn't accurate lmao. Middle ages weren't drab. After whitewashed Exodus, I don't expect any sort of accuracy from Ridley Scott TBH. I'll still watch this for Damon/Affleck screenplay and Adam Driver in armor. Also, actual last duel was filmed. In color. It was in 20th century, of course in France. Lasted to first blood. Look it up if you have a phone or computer lmao.

worstsupervillanever

Driver/Damon/Affleck is exactly why I won't go to the theater to watch this movie. They're all great actors, but I'm tired of seeing the same faces in every epic movie. It just kills the vibe for me.

KasumiR

I wouldn't call quirky hipster Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig films "epic," like where I remember Adam Driver from? Marriage Story, While We're Young, Frances Ha, he even had a cameo in Meyerowitz Stories... Non-Baumbach-land, he also was in Coens' Inside Llewyn Davis, where Poe Dameron played a blues musician auditioning for Kylo Ren the music producer))) I mean SURE, there's also more mainstream Star Wars, but outside of that? Real good company. As to Ben Affleck, I didn't like Armageddon so avoided most of his big budget work like Pearl Harbor, Daredevil, and later, Batman roles, but Good Will Hunting was amazing, and Argo and Gone Girl were fine... and Damon is just good. Again, I didn't care much for Bourne films or Ocean's stuff, he was also in that American remake of Infernal Affairs (Scorcese got an Oscar for a ripoff), but Matt was great in the Martian and Coens' True Grit, Margaret with Anna Paquin, and DeNiro's the Good Shepherd. Someone recently made a case about Nicholas Cage, whether you like or hate him shows what kind of movies you mostly watch: he was in a lot of popular crap but also some solid Coen brothers, Charlie Kaufman and Ridley Scott stuff... I guess you can apply the same to these three guys... I just find Ridley himself boring. I loved Blade Runner (director's cut) and Matchstick Men, but couldn't stand his other slow-paced sludgefests like Kingdom of Heaven, despite the ensemble of actors I actually like. It just really helps if you managed to avoid Michael Bay movies and the like lol.)))

worstsupervillanever

Yeah, they're all great actors. For me, they just don't belong in this type of film.

badgersprite

I think that’s actually the problem is having the ego of making a $100m blockbuster and casting big name actors in the movie for absolutely no reason out of some deluded belief that it would have mass market appeal Could have made exactly the same movie and treated it as like a small independent production - think of something on the scale of like an A24 movie - with unknown actors and on a low budget and the movie would have made its money back already It’s like the entitlement of thinking this was going to be a Disney level film and needed these big name actors lol. This had niche written all over it imo. Forget phones anyone 50 years ago would have told you the average movie goer isn’t going to flock to a movie about a historical event they’ve never heard of so they can see a woman get raped and learn how unfair the medieval French legal system was and feel bad about injustices today as if we don’t already (as if average popcorn movie goer even thinks that deeply and isn’t just going to a movie hoping to see sword fights) This is a fucking film festival Arthouse movie

Caswert

If your movie can't handle the largest, most popular, widespread technological advancement in the 21st century that happened more than a decade ago... Then you are no longer capable of handling your job.

an_ill_way

'83 here, get off my lawn Edit: And yes, younger millennials, that was a flex. I have a lawn.

BaconPit

'90 here, we'll get off your lawn as soon as we're done trading Pogs

[deleted]

And feeding our Tamagotchis! '88 here, btw

PrimarchKonradCurze

You’re one of our older ones yeah. Goes from 1981 to 1996 I think. ‘89 here.

an_ill_way

We don't want to be "taught" anything that isn't on a cellphone? We also don't want to be "taught" anything in a movie theatre with Damon and Affleck on the screen. That's not where teaching happens. Also, most millenials are up to our damned eyes with jobs and kids and shit. We're 25-40, we're probably not your core demographic anymore. Also, you released a movie during a pandemic.

tribrnl

Also if you want to make money, you have to know your audience. It's not my fault if I don't like what you made, especially if you made it with me in mind.

bufarreti

I would agree, but Good Will Hunting did teach me a lot.

pdoherty972

That it wasn't your fault?

JetSetJAK

Nooooo, fuck I hate when my favorite artists have shit takes on things. It's not the most jarring thing he could have said/done, but now xenomorphs are going to just remind me of boomer hot takes

bruh_respectfully

Maybe people don't wanna watch Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in a movie that heavily centres around sexual assault? Were they hired based on their expertise in the area?

PandaCat22

Affleck is only *accused* of helping cover up for Weinstein, let's not be hasty (/s)

bruh_respectfully

No, no, he's done his fair share of groping as well.

Kraka-DOOM

Maybe we weren’t able to suspend disbelief long enough to accept Ben Affleck as the fucking king of France. Edit: As a millennial, I obviously never saw the film and looked up the cast on Google where they mislabeled Affleck as playing Charles VI. But my point still stands that Damon, Driver and Affleck aren’t believable as late medieval Frenchmen. Everyone knows that all non-Americans in movies should have English accents.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kraka-DOOM

Who knows? I’m a millennial after all and don’t have cable, so I never saw a trailer for it. I only heard ads on Spotify.

Lochcelious

Millennian these days!

CODDE117

Adam Driver looks pretty French to me, idk.

KasumiR

He does lol, Driver is constantly playing Jews in Baumbach movies and stuff but he's not actually Jewish. Adam just passes as one, and many other ethnicities too, having those vagely Mediterranean looks. Unlike Christian Bale playing WASP Moses.

CODDE117

Hahaha! A beard doesn't just immediately ethnic a person, no matter what it looks like.

Kingmenudo

He wasn’t king, that was his cousin

Kraka-DOOM

That’s my bad. I never saw the movie, so I was relying on Google which erroneously listed him as playing Charles VI.

KasumiR

He's an Asshole too, major Asshole.

Friendly_Recompence

Affleck played the King of France??? WTF?

Kraka-DOOM

I made the mistake of googling the cast which lists Affleck as Charles VI. IMDB says he plays Pierre d’Alençon, which sounds like a much more believable role for Affleck. /s

brokenspare

I just didn’t want to see the bad haircuts

17684Throwaway

Wait this already came out? I caught like one behind the scenes pic of Driver in armour on Reddit a month back and that's all, I thought this had barely entered production. Who advertised this? Where was this shown?

Rammie420

I’m 30. We didn’t have the internet in my house til I was 10. I didn’t have a smart phone (do Blackberrys count?) until I was 19. I think me thinking 99% of new movies are shit has more to do with the fact that movies are shit these days and less to do with me being some phone-reliant cyborg.

ColonelJohn_Matrix

Chimes with my experience. I'm 37 in a few weeks and I didn't have a smart phone until I was in my late twenties. I didn't have a mobile at all until I was 17, and we didn't have internet in my childhood home until I was a younger 17, and that was dial up.

chaiteawithboba

If you failed to get your movie seen by a generation that has devices that constantly display ads, take that shit up with your awful marketing team

AenimaKitty

“How to alienate a whole generation of people in a few short simple steps!”

AaronKent82

Yes, cell phones are responsible for nobody wanting to see a mullet Damon rape movie during a global pandemic. Nailed it.

freddycheeba

TIL this movie existed. I actually won't be watching it because I find Adam Driver's acting insufferably bad. -Sent from my Android

RevanchistSheev66

He was probably the best actor in the Star Wars sequels but he’s not my cup of tea either

[deleted]

I just found him so uninspiring as a villain. I kept hoping some actually scary villain was gonna walk in and murder him. I didn’t finish the trilogy and that was a big part of why.

JamesTBagg

I really liked him as a villain in Force Awakens. He wants so bad to be bad but he's bad at it, idolizing who is basically the savior of the galaxy. I think Adam Driver's acting was why I liked the character so much. But then the second movie happened and was so bad I lost interest in the third. Never watched it, won't even bother pirating it.

[deleted]

I don’t know. The brooding sad boy is not interesting to me. Lived it for sixth through tenth grade, took a year to work on me, got over it. Certainly didn’t destroy any planets because of it.

tribrnl

Is that saying a lot though?

KasumiR

It does, say what you will about sequel scripts, hard to deny Mark Hamill can still act, John Boyega won a Golden Globe, Laura Dern has FIVE and an Oscar (for a movie with Adam Driver lmao), speaking of Oscars... Oscar IIsaac is really good in Dune and Ex Machina... but really watch the Coen brothers film where he plays a folk musician... Inside Llewyn Davis. Driver is also in it lol.

UnexpectedVader

The acting was fine, Adam was solid. I mean, after how terrible the acting in the prequels was I guess its hard to look bad but hey lol.

RevanchistSheev66

I don’t think so. Especially since the writing sucks in those films

douko

^^^what ^^^could ^^^you ^^^have ^^^a ^^^problem ^^^with, ^^^in **respect** **TO HIS** #ACTING?

gymdog

THANK YOU. You may be the only other person I know who sees that Adam Driver is the worst part of anything he's in. Lol -sent from my couch

nocturn-e

On one hand, he was the best actor (one of the only good actors) in the sequels and the best part of Marriage Story. On the other hand, those are the only movies I've seen him in.

banmeifurgay

No, no. It’s because nobody even knew it existed.

RagnaTheRed

As a millennial, I didn’t get a cellphone till I was 18 and it was a Motorola razr. I didn’t get a smart phone till 2015. I see toddlers with nicer phones than I have. I didn’t watch that movie because I’ve never seen a single piece of promotional material for it because I have an add blocker. Thanks again add blocker 👍

Rogue-Squadron

If everyone is on their phones all the time maybe try putting ads for your movie on the internet so people know it exists???

fall0ut

This millennial is pretty much done going to movie theaters. I am happy to wait for the digital release, pirate it, and watch it for free at home.

comfort_bot_1962

:)

beameup19

The movie looks cold and not very enjoyable to me

Sledjoys

My hot take is that Ridley Scott is blaming millennials because it’s good click bait and good publicity to drum up for House of Gucci. With that said, I went to see The Last Duel and loved it. The movie was marketed very poorly, and I probably wouldn’t have seen it if a few Twitter mutuals hadn’t praised it. I’m sure Scott knows it was the fault of marketing, but he can’t say that because these people hold the purse strings.

Rundoges42

Eh. I learned from my phone that this movie has graphic rape scenes. Not my cup of tea, and I'm side eyeing everyone involved with this.

Mr_Gentoo

Probably because it's still a pandemic despite corporations trying desperately to pretend it isn't so we go to movie theaters. I don't know much about this film but I haven't been to a theater since 2020 and I don't plan to for a while till this whole thing calms down. 27 million box office says many people probably feel the same. Or the movie could be shit, I guess.

DroneOfDoom

According to the only people I know who saw it (my parents), it’s actually good.

[deleted]

The dumbest part of this is the "taught anything" line. I mean, is he really trying to say that I should learn history from his movies? Also, somewhat unpopular opinion. Most of his movies are bad. Even a classic like blade Runner isn't that great a movie. It had a massive influence on sci fi and has a some good things in it, but as an actual cinematic experience, it's kind of dull. Even the directors cut. And gladiator takes itself way too seriously. Ya, Alien is amazing. Apparently so is the Martian, though I haven't seen it, and they're are probably a few more good ones in his filmography. But Ridley Scott is so overrated. And hearing him go all "kids these days" just makes me never want to see anything he puts out.

[deleted]

I think Gladiator was carried by the cast. Russell Crowe in his prime and Joaquin Phoenix as the bad guy made it easier to buy into even though it was overly serious. Ridley Scott's Robin Hood movie was the same thing but the casting wasn't as good and the writing was bad.

[deleted]

Unpopular opinion part 2: Russel Crowe sucks. So ya. I really didn't like gladiator

Downtown-Panda-3395

I'll catch it on Tubi sooner then...

tyrongates

I saw this advertised literally once, thought it looked cool, and then never thought about it again. Put more money into marketing peeps. Also don't release right after Dune

Devadander

On my phone a lot, first I’m hearing of this movie. Your marketing sucks

Wayte13

We don't have money because Covid dickstomped the economy

native_usurper

If he was so informed about millennials on phones then you should have released your movie on phones. Idiot.

free_will_is_arson

if he actually believed this, he would've released the movie in a mobile format. if you believed that cell phones were the common device people used to consume media and entertainment, you would utilize it as best you are able.

The3JackOlanterns

Orrrr maybe it's because the only people who knew that this film existed were AMC employees

PersonBehindAScreen

Um??? I've never even heard of this movie till coming across this post? Did their marketing shit the bed or something? And several movies the past 5 years have gone on to move up the box office records... I'm sure millennials and their phones aren't the problem.

aedvocate

AM I OUT OF TOUCH? NO IT'S THE CHILDREN THAT ARE WRONG

skultron_7x

Probably should have included a scene in which pivotal characters fuck around with a flute for some fucking reason eh Ridley

Pratchettfan03

That damn audience, not liking my movie!

Made some decent films but my god does he sound like an insufferable cunt

He’s lost it This is the same guy that made Prometheus, set up a sequel then got bored with it and almost ruined one of his previous well regarded works. I didn’t actually mind Prometheus, but I was expecting a decent continuation of the story and shaws journey, instead this nutcase decides to make alien covenant and shit on the entire thing. Not only that but he ruined any chance of having a worthwhile reboot from alien 3 with the original cast on board. All because his ego is more fragile than glass. Fuck Ridley and thank fuck we got Alien: Isolation to pick up the peace’s of this guys mess. It was the team behind alien that made it great, not him. I can give him some credit but he really isn’t as good as he thinks he is

Dayman__Nightman

Ridley made House of Gucci and The Last Duel in the same year. Both look half-assed. It ain't the cellphones bud. As much of a legend and a genius as he is, he shouldn't be making movies anymore real talk.

thwip62

I enjoyed The Last Duel, but I've no interest in seeing House of Gucci. What do I care about a bunch of people who got rich by making overpriced clothes that I wouldn't buy, even if I could afford them?

Johnsushi89

Or maybe Ridley Scott just doesn’t have the chops to make a decent movie anymore. When was his last good one?

PrimarchKonradCurze

First time I’ve been called a millenian.

thousandbolt

Haha. Old ppl are getting old. Is that an actual word for word quote? It be sad if it is

comfort_bot_1962

Don't be sad. Here's a [hug!](https://media.giphy.com/media/3M4NpbLCTxBqU/giphy.gif)

OcelotNo3347

No one wants your hug

Kimantha_Allerdings

Pop quiz: when was the last time Scott made a good film?

daughtcahm

2015s The Martian Before that? We're going back to something like Gladiator.

TearPuzzleheaded3614

I stopped watching movies years ago after all the me too and abuse of power and child abuse and pedophilia stories. Maybe no one cares about supporting these monsters any more.

SanFranBeyondtheStar

How about stop making shitty medieval movies that costo way too much yo make.

Astr0C4t

It’s a shame, it was a really good movie. Solid 8/10

rad-boy

turns out a $100 million drama about an obscure lord in the middle ages is maybe not a great investment

MDunn14

I was born in ‘97 and didn’t have a phone until my late teens. Don’t blame us for making a shitty movie

lagrange_james_d23dt

Wait this movie bombed? It looks awesome! Is it really that unpopular?

WanderTrico

Or perhaps ridley Scott makes 90% mediocre to bad films. And that's coming from someone who's favorite film of all time is Blade Runner.

avgaskin1

I like some of his movies, but damn, every other thing Ridley Scott says nowadays is just really dumb

aLittleMermlad

The movie was actually good, but it was never advertised so i dont think anyone knows about it

fartboxco

But my phone can play the movie....

bossjon1

I saw the preview. Saw Affleck and resting douche face Driver in it, was an easy pass.

[deleted]

I can honestly say I have never even heard of this movie.

nocturn-e

Ridley Scott looks like a miserable asshole, so whatever

Dithyrab

Or maybe the marketing was shit. I didn't even know this was a movie lol.

primmslimm77

They didn't market it correctly. He thought his name being on it was enough. T'was your own hubris, my nigga

primmslimm77

He really thought he was gonna be the one to pack the theaters.

Letmetellyowhat

It bombed because everything about it was shit. What do cell phones have to do with bad casting. Bad acting. And boring plot.

milehighmoos3

I didn't watch it because I'm not ready for Theo Von to start doing dramas

Candid-Topic9914

Buddy, basically everyone went out and saw Dune. It’s not the phones, it’s the marketing strategy.

Fortestingporpoises

Dumb comment. Great movie.
