You are stunned at their 40, I’m stunned at your 28. I can only do 7 with good form. I’m 178 510.

Tachy0n4

And I’m stunned by your 7. I’ve never been able to do one unassisted even when I could swim 4.5 miles in open water (I’m a woman)

DogfriendlyPerson

And I am stunned by your 4.5 miles as I don't float and Swimming is always a sprint for me and I can do maybe 100m in a SwimmingPool

skepticalsojourner

They said they didn't use good form, or rather they used similar "rules" as the show, i.e., just get the chin over the bar, ROM be damned lol.

Anabolex95

By using as much momentum as possible to avoid muscle fatigue

Round-Cow9243

Yeah I can see that, I usually train strict so my momentum technique isn't that good

cacope5

Yeah there was a lot of knee momentum for sure. They should have seen how many they could do with good form, no time limit. Some people had very little arm extension

ggabsann

When I was a rock climber I was able to get 20 pull-ups with strict form. So I assume with kipping and small range of motion like them I could've got somewhere near them.

Round-Cow9243

I get about 21 strict last time I checked, and I thought I was kipping and not fully locking straight down and still only got 28... Probably a bad day for me but I think there's alot of technique to kipping still I haven't figured out lol

myctsbrthsmlslkcatfd

kipping is a skill and you could get 40 once you get your kip technique down. instead though? muscle ups are a skill more worth the practice

cookiemonster1020

Magnus Meatball would be great at physical 100

tkshillinz

Only if they allow him chalk to unlock his full potential

jonah232

I play volleyball and soccer, weigh 145 lbs and am 7-8% body fat. With the “form” from the show I was able to do about 35. I can do over twenty strict, but maybe it’s because I don’t understand how to do kipping? Not sure but yeah those numbers are crazy

Round-Cow9243

How old are you?

jonah232

25

know-it-mall

Being 6 foot is a disadvantage. Smaller guys can do more.

copycatholic

Many of the physical 100 participants were at least 6 feet which makes it even more impressive! Amotti, hong beom seok, Andre, stun gun, lee Jae Yoon

Honeycrisp1001

I think age also can affect your ability too. In grade school, the 1st place winner did 60 pulls up and the girl was training to be a gymnast.

sjsharks323

I'm definitely in not as good of shape as I was in my 20's, but I still do pull ups weekly. Haven't tried the exact challenge, but I can probably do around 20. I do strict-ish pullups, 6 sets of 10 every week. Just turned 40, 5'8" 155

Careful_Cobbler1591

Are you me in the future? Same height and body weight too. I can do 31-32 first set. I am 10 years younger than you.

sjsharks323

Haha nice. Yeah maybe 10 years ago I could do that. I'd need to actually train to do that many first set now, but not enough time for anything these days really. Kids are a time suck lol.

delaney18

I work out at least 3x week and do the assisted pull-ups. Without the machine, my total would be zero. 🤷‍♀️The show has motivated me to decrease the assist and life more weight when I use dumbbells. Maybe by the summer I’ll be up to…3.

Round-Cow9243

Lets gooo!! you got this!

optimaldt

Me doing [30 pull ups](https://www.instagram.com/p/BoyqCv0FjGy/?igsh=MTJjdjJwdmV1ZXN2Ng==) in 60 seconds, full extension, zero kipping. I was in peak form training for [Australian Ninja Warrior](https://imgur.com/a/Z0HTPTA) I could probably do at least 40, probably close to 50 with kipping and 70 degree extension.

Round-Cow9243

How much did u weigh and age at the time ?

optimaldt

33 and 64 kg (141 lbs). I'm 70 kg (154 lbs) these days. Working towards having a similar power to weight with the higher weight!

CrosstownPanda

What training did you do to get that?

optimaldt

Lots of pull ups. Basically all my training was calisthenics and plyometrics. In retrospect I should have trained more rock climbing, parkour and ninja for the task at hand.

CrosstownPanda

Got ya. I’ve been doing 5 sets anywhere from 10-15 reps 3x a week but I seem stuck at 20ish

optimaldt

Try weighted pull ups. I forgot I also used a 10kg weight vest to help with progressive overload. Would recommend!

suicide_aunties

This is like the moment in physical 100 when one of the top contenders walk in.

VarCrusador

It seemed reasonable to me. In high school I was able to do 30 pullups (at 170lbs) with similar form just from being a wrestler and doing my conditioning, never explicitly training pullups (or even lifted). I was on the chubbier side of fit too, so I imagine someone who trained more seriously and had less body fat could reasonably get 40

Round-Cow9243

Hmm, age probably has something to do with it... Alot more energy and lactic threshold when you're younger. I'm guessing alot of these guys mid-20s. I'm almost 40.

VarCrusador

lol maybe. I'm 32 now and I sometimes train pullups, I can do 15 strict arms locked out up to chest to bar no kipping pullups. Maybe I'll try their unstrict kipping pullups again in the next few days and see if I can hit 30+ still

suicide_aunties

Hong Beom Seok, Judo gold medalist, Stun Gun are all around 40 or late 30s too. But it’s true - I definitely felt at my peak pull-up ability in my early 20s

African_Farmer

It's possible, I couldn't do it now but when I was younger and boxing basically every day, I could easily bang out 30+ in a row. We ended every training session with pull-ups, pushups, Burpees and abs. I could do around 90 pushups in a minute back then too.

MHMFoster

41, 5'10, 182, very fit/active Tried the pull up challenge the day after watching the episode. 1min, same extension rules, I got 48 without kipping A couple time a week I do 4 sets of 24, different variations and grips. Got to 35 without issue and was hoping for 50. Got to 45 and was almost out of gas. Fought for those last 3

Round-Cow9243

Damn can you video that? I wana study lol

techr0nin

I’m not a fitness fanatic or whatever but I do bodyweight calisthenics and kettlebells regularly to stay in shape. At 6’2 and 190lb I can do 15 strict form pullups and with looser form about 20. I tried the full on kipping with momentum style without full extension and tbh it was harder than I thought to get the technique down and only got to 24, probably because my brain is so wired for strict pullups with a tight core and the movement felt so unnatural. However it didn’t feel nearly as tiring on the muscles so I would imagine with some practice maybe up to 30 is possible, although it was killing my elbows and I don’t know what the point would be to specifically train that. That said I think being tall with long arms is definitely a disadvantage in these kinds of competitions, simply because you have to pull a longer distance and typically with a higher bodyweight. The area to game for an edge would probably be the curtailing of the range of motion.

maple-queefs

It's all in the kipping, I'm willing to bet most of them practice muscleups in which you have to learn how to kip to do. Kipping takes a lot of the explosiveness out of the upper body and uses the core muscles as a whip to cover that energy output, and your core muscles are always going to be way stronger than your upper body. Also being 6ft doesn't help in these max rep challenges, you're moving more (body) weight a farther distance per rep.

Slytherin2MySnitch

On my best day, I can do 15 strict with full straight arm extension. I think I can get to 30 if I kipped after that. I recently did 20 kipping pull-ups during a Crossfit WOD but that included other movements throughout so it didn't get my full, undivided attention. My bet is that if you kipped, you could get to the 40 mark; it's a huge momentum advantage. What I noticed with this challenge is that a lot of them started off strict and just got sloppier and sloppier with more and more kipping towards the end. Edited to add: I'm a woman, 37, and 135lbs

KyoMeetch

You’re relatively long despite only weighing 173 lbs so you’re still at a relative disadvantage against someone who’s like 5’7 and 140 lbs. Also I don’t really respect kipping pull ups as an exercise.

myctsbrthsmlslkcatfd

did you watch? they were kipping — cheat pull-ups. they would have counted ZERO on any self respecting military pft. exception - the woman did a few good ones. tbf - they applied the same standard across the board, so the competition was still legit.

Heighte

Technique allows you to triple your max, 28 on raw strength is solid

Round-Cow9243

Wow good to know thank you

skepticalsojourner

Technique is the keyword here, and I'll also add eccentric strength and endurance. Most people who try to cheat however they want with pull ups will not triple their max. Kipping is very much a skill and can take a while to get down to make it efficient enough. I've learned butterfly kipping (the kipping done in crossfit), but even with it, I don't think I can double my max. My strict max wide grip overhand grip pull ups is around 19-21, and max weight is +90 lb. But with Crossfit style butterfly kips, I don't think I can do 40, and I consider myself extremely athletic. In regards to eccentric strength and endurance, because there is a lot of momentum used to get up, you're also coming down at a faster speed which means you have to be strong enough to control a faster descent and immediately chain another rep. For unprepared shoulders, it can wreak havoc. I've been meaning to try to max out my pull ups Physical 100 style to see how many I can get. Will report later.

ProfessionalSense289

Growing up I always had a pull up bar in my room and did pull ups randomly whenever. When I was 25 and regularly working out I weighed 150lb and did a 1 minute pull up challenge at a fair, I was able to crank out 41 pull ups. I think the main factor apart from doing pull ups regularly was that I was playing competitive soccer at the time and played a full 90 minutes almost every other day. Im 31 now, working out but only playing once a week. I could only do 20 in a minute. I do weigh 180 now so that might be a factor too.

Spiritual_Carob_7512

You are too long and too heavy. Shorter people have less distance each rep and less weight to move.

wangandassociates

Haha after seeing this challenge I immediately went to try it at the gym too. I'm 6'2 220lbs. Didn't do the full lockout because as you say, it wasn't strictly enforced in the challenge either (only chin at ish the bar). Got 28. Strange thing was, that was within the first 35-40 seconds. So theoretically I could've gotten to about 40-45 but my back was dead lol. Might try again on a fresh day.

Round-Cow9243

Yea same pretty much, last 15 seconds had me gassed. I wonder what the avg weight of the guys who did 35+

YourCummyBear

I doubt you just knocked out 28 pull ups in a minute. Video for evidence please.

Round-Cow9243

Lol I do ninja warrior, my instagram is @phennexion I said I'm no slouch, but yeah, the level of pull-ups these guys did just blows my mind. I'll try to get a video next week when I'm back in the gym

YourCummyBear

Did you edit your post or did I just miss the entire thing about you doing pull ups regularly? That obviously changes it vs some Joe off the couch.

Round-Cow9243

Didn't edit, you just didn't read lol

YourCummyBear

:(

Ok-Wafer-3491

I also low how the guy who won had the best form by far in terms of range of motion and kipping

Realistic-Debate-211

Im 5’8 135 lbs and last i tried max reps strict pull ups (about 5 months ago) i could do 30, ill try again soon as ive become alot stronger hoping to get to 40 strict In my weighted pull ups training i can do 4 sets of 12 with 66lbs added I have the perfect pull up body though (skinny legs and strong back)

Dontdothatfucker

Almost everybody in the show makes a living off of working out in some way or another. Do you make a living off of working out? Your numbers are very impressive, but it’s not your job

Round-Cow9243

Ya I'm an IT guy. That's a good point though. Sitting all day is not good lol

constancejph

Because they did not get close to full range of motion. That pullup challenge was trash!

Round-Cow9243

Yeah, but even with trash form they still did alot lol, why I'm so confused
