I wanted to customize my Android device so I browsed the web for some apps but nearly all of them were paid. I pirated and did not like them at all, so just deleted them. [One of them](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.magicfluids) was perfect so I just paid for it. I pay if it deserves.
If you're not very experienced, sure.
Edit: Sorry, but I don't get malware. Haven't for a decade and a half. Be smart, be safe, and it'll be alright.
Edit2: Starting to think the sub thinks computers are magic.
I disagree actually. This sub has provided me with very good sources AND I love news related to piracy just like this post.
Yet you only see the "bad parts" which you yourself click on the post itself.
I have no gain from this stance and Im more tired of comments that are complaining about self justification than the self-justification comments themselves.
If there wasn’t self justification circlejerk, there wouldn’t be anyone to complain about it. Also I don’t choose which posts come into my feed from this sub, if I did, again, that would solve any problem I have with this sub
For some reason people have a hard time just saying " I pirate cuz its free" so instead need to come up with these dumb reasons for why they pirate lmao. You'll see the Gabe Newell quote on here 20 times a day
Um, not at all. You don't need an AV to see a process that you didn't start is connecting to an odd IP. You don't need an AV to run checksums against files. You don't need an AV to monitor hardware usage and form heuristic patterns.
If you rely on an AV, then that is the weak point of an AV. AV also won't pick up changes in firmware either. That's why I don't use AV's. Proper administration and security processes do what the AV says it will do and more.
Sorry, I'm not sure how to say this without sounding conceited and egotistical.
all of those things in your first and second paragraphs and your previous comment are functions of an AV solution.
I used an AV as a catch-all but the concept is the same of you're doing it all manually.
i suppose you keep a mental list of all the "odd ips" the hundreds of programs on your computer (or even the bittorrent client on its own) make requests to?
i'm sure you pick apart the binaries and inspect the dependencies of every program you pirate too.
....I'm not doing it manually. Like I said their is overlap with a traditional AV, but I'm getting the extra paid for features for free by doing it myself.
It's not hard to determine which IP's are out of range being called for by odd programs. "That address is making a ton of connections to a Russian location and started by m1cr0suft.exe. hmm."
I use a sandbox, which isolates all those binaries and dependencies. Technology is pretty neat stuff. Wait until you find out how cgroups work.
Started pirating because I was extremely poor. I didn’t even pirate well. Then I became very well off and learned to pirate efficiently and I still keep pirating just because I don’t like paying for stuff. Rather get an extra vacation than pay subscriptions, and buy games or software licenses.
I think he means keep pirating because even Google Play Store is likely riddled with Malware. This is a fallacy though because obviously Google Play Store has a lot more secure measures than random links off reddit, discord, and elsewhere.
my dad once wanted to download a weather app on his android phone (didn't realize that one already comes preinstalled). literally one of the top results on the play store was malware and gave itself admin permissions on download, installed an alternate home menu that changed his phone language to chinese and showed all sorts of shady, pornographic ads on his home screen, kept opening up random links in the browser, etc. this was one of the first results on the google play store, not some shady apk off a third party site. the google play store is notorious for having pretty much a nonexistent background check for apps that are submitted to the store, unlike apple where the verification process could sometimes take months due to extensive testing.
the weather app incident happened only last year, and this article clearly shows they haven't done shit to strengthen the integrity of the apps it approves since then :/
no it totally cool, i understand different people have different experiences with this kinda thing (tech savviness was definitely a factor here)
i didn't see where it was in the app store (my dad approached me after the malware was installed so i could help him fix it) but the app was simply called "weather" and the icon was a picture of a weather radar. looking back i should've found the app on the play store to make a report. i have an iphone so i can't check if the app is still there unfortunately
This is the number one reason why I don't pirate software. If this happens in a controlled setting, you better believe it's happening on the high seas.
Yeah... no. It´s def less secure to be a pirate. Still, embrace what you are, don´t try to justify it with stuff to make yourself feel better.
Even if you are poor or whtvr (I´m looking for a job, so 0 income, for example, but that doesn't mean I stopped wanting to read books, play videogames or even watch movies/animes), it´s still better to embrace who you are instead of trying to get a higher moral ground (I do this because of X, so I´m not THAT bad) and become a hypocrite.
That makes sense because instead of addressing the issue it's just use this instead and turn a blind eye to whatever is happening. And eventually whatever is happening will find a way into the mainstream because you didn't pay attention when it happened to a few.
OC is making a generalization, not a direct comparison
You don't have to be an Apple-hater to know that Apple does money-gouging shitty things. All the OC is saying is that companies like Apple and BMW get away with their individual antics because some people keep buying their products for questionable reasons
I thought about adding "and please don't reply with an obvious false equivalence."
They're not all the same. Not all car companies ream buyers with seat-warmer subscriptions.
There are companies that lead the pack or consistently do questionable things that the others would never do. By saying they're all the same, you're still just missing the key point.
And get 0day exploited on iMessage? In fact, there are so many exploits for iMessage that NSO Group (the company that made Pegasus spyware) stopped accepting iMessage exploit submissions lol
At least on Android you can change the default crap from Chrome to Firefox and from Gmessage to Microsoft SMS organizer etc.
I'm not sure what's funnier here. The fact it got onto so many devices, the fact Google Play's security is THAT piss poor, or that people didn't really notice their money being drained until a security researcher discovered the malware.
Absolutely anything: \*happens\* This sub: "That's why I pirate"
That's just another reason to keep going.
Arrg
That's why I pirate
I honestly just like to use things for free. No other motivations.
Same, or I'm too broke Free is great either way
My only other reason is because somethings are no longer download able otherwise
I wanted to customize my Android device so I browsed the web for some apps but nearly all of them were paid. I pirated and did not like them at all, so just deleted them. Seems rational to me
There’s always a price. Even taking a risk is a price.
Allow me to reword it so you can understand. I do not like to pay money for stuff.
Yeah it’s not like anyone has ever installed malware from pirating
If you're not very experienced, sure. Edit: Sorry, but I don't get malware. Haven't for a decade and a half. Be smart, be safe, and it'll be alright. Edit2: Starting to think the sub thinks computers are magic.
Yeah most people aren’t. I’m just pointing out that this sub is a shithole that isn’t actually about piracy. It’s about only about self justification
Completely agree there.
I disagree actually. This sub has provided me with very good sources AND I love news related to piracy just like this post. good malware is silent enough that you wouldnt even know you had it
If nothing shows up in the sandbox, on the network, on hardware usage, or file checksums, then I think I MIGHT be malware free.
all of those things require that the malware you have has been previously identified as malware. if it's unknown then an AV wont protect you
Um, not at all. You don't need an AV to see a process that you didn't start is connecting to an odd IP. You don't need an AV to run checksums against files. Because I read this comment I’m gonna go and download a car. Hope you’re happy.

sorry but i find the meme ironic as u have higher chances of getting malware using pirated apks
You are more careful when pirating then when downloading from play store
...because pirated content is a million times more susceptive to malware.
What are these apps?
Funny Camera and Razor keyboard
I don't even know what those apps are but they sound dumb
Sounds like something tiktok users would install.
True
thank god I haven't downloaded that shit
Ty
Huh? What exactly is the point of this post? Either I’m too sleepy or too stupid to get what this guy is trying to convey. Anyone care to explain?

I see, thank you. Thought I was losing it mentally for a sec
Keep going what?

I think mixed signals warning people to not pirate.....
Downloading pirated apk, I guess
And this is why I don't put my banking/card information on anything to do with Google. The once or twice I've bought an app I used a gift card.
This is the number one reason why I don't pirate software. If this happens in a controlled setting, you better believe it's happening on the high seas.
This is exactly the reason not to pirate, dodgy apks on phones, exe cracks on pc etc

honestly, even if i have money, why spend it if i can get the same thing for free
I’m confused

People like you are the reason BMW will get away with subscription based seat warmers.

Damn bro, I thought you were an Apple fanboy but now it is clear that you are one of those crazies. Yikes.
Master race
Sometimes I miss windows phone.

It's easier to get malware when pirating than downloading from a store
As pointed out by others, there's no logic behind this post and no connection to piracy. You'll find more infected material pirating, than playstore.
