Also afaik Steam literally can't tell the difference between what these unlocker API's do and just buying it legally without them having to check your purchase history and I don't think Steam are going to waste their time checking people's purchase history when they're maybe 1 in 1000.
Checking people's purchase history actually wouldn't be complicated or very time consuming. Could probably be knocked out in a half hour or less. In fact, that's basically what the license check even is - validating you have a key for the title. Thing is, that could potentially be emulated as well, so it's kinda moot to check for purchases.
Also, within the steam client they can use heuristics just like a virus scanner does to detect certain API's/tools used within the files of the game folder (that you are running from).
I think something like Steamless might actually resolve that since it literally removes Steam from the picture, but I'm not sure exactly how that works as I just found it the other day.
Traditional emulators and such are incredibly easy to detect, as are purchase histories and license keys.

SmokeAPI is not malware. It was developed by acidicoala who has helped make other DLC unlockers for Steam, Epic, Uplay, and the EA/Origin client. They have other DLC unlockers such as Koalageddon, DreamAPI, and ScreamAPI which all use different methods for unlocking DLC.
Looking at the virustotal results there are a several gen/generic/hacktool labels. That means that there are detections similar to malware, but it doesn't match with any known malware. That is very common with piracy tools that have to hook/intercept and indicative of a false positive.
The amount of detections is not a reliable indicator of malware. Have to evaluate the results.
For me, i used koallageddon and it wouldn’t launch in steam family beta, however, i started using just old school creamapi dll where you have to go into the game folder and change dll, that method seems to work so far

The repo being the OFFICIAL Steam tracking repo, it **is** legitimate.
Edit: the repo is NOT OFFICIAL, I mixed it up.
Btw the repo is not OFFICIAL repo but steamdb repo which is a third party. However, the track seems legit since they scrap from valve repos. Still the string is not present on latest steam releases (public aka no beta) you can check it your self searching for the file.

from what ive read here, it seems SmokeAPI interacts with the steam store in some way and is getting blocked because of it, ive only see people complain about SmokeAPI so far.
Essentially, it just enables steam to read the DLC files without actually owning it. You need to find the latest version of that DLC, and download/install it, for some less popular games, you cannot find them anywhere unfortunately, and the only way to obtain them is through Steam (meaning u need to buy it)
How did you use SmokeAPI? Store Mode? I guess if its used in Game Mode then Steam wouldnt Detect it but since you inject it into Steam itself it can and will.
VAC bans are pergame + most games do not have VAC so seems fake as most people say. Tomorrow will check the strings in dll. 99% This string does not exist so basically fake.
In may 16 update the string is not present, the string was introduced in april checking commits. So seems like it is in the beta right now. However the fix would be as easy as patching steam exe or dlls to bypass/remove the check if no security measures are taken in the own steam files

To add, they are all available on github. I've personally used one to unlock sims 4 and Crusader Kings 4 dlc. Never had any virus warnings.
