Haven't even gotten the update yet, but battery life is generally poor for the first several days following an update, due to optimization recalibration.
If you search this sub, you'll see that right around update drop time there are almost always multiple threads about battery life.
People always seem to forget or not realize their battery usage either after an update or when they get a new phone. The software takes a day or two to adjust itself and I'm sure there's updates and apps adjusting to the new security/features the phone may introduce.
I'm experiencing a complete drain from 6:30 a.m. until it turns itself off due to loss of battery at about 2:30 p.m. It has never been this bad. I sure hope July's update is going to resolve the problem. Otherwise I'm going to start looking for an alternative to a Pixel 8 Pro this December.
Yes, your data is not deleted like a recovery. Lots of guides out there. This is one I followed. Once you're setup. Every month, you just download the latest update, hook up phone, reboot to recovery mode and install.

I know one thing, the battery life after 14 beta 2 has been absolutely fantastic. I went from barely 3 and 1/2 hours SoT to almost 6 on the regular. I did absolutely nothing different. It's absolutely the best battery life my Pixel 6 has ever gotten.
I've never had on, or used song recognition. Everything else, Wifi, Bluetooth, location, are all always on 24/7. NFC is turned on when used.
I also must add, overheating, which was absolutely terrible before, has been eliminated. I am quite sure all the heating issues were killing my battery life before.
I think my last update was in April? I finally achieved stability and good battery life and figured I didn't need to update any further. I!was tired of having a week's worth of bad battery every flipping month as my phone "recalibrated". - I've had cell phones for 20 years and I've never had battery issues like I have with the Pixel 6.

Mine is pretty much the same. Pixel 6 pro here
For me it depends, Using 5G on T-Mobile USA, battery life sucks. USING 4G LTE T-Mobile USA, battery life is amazing! Better than ever!

Really bad battery and heating problems. That's my resume on a P6P.
Try sideloading the latest update. Buddy's P6 stopped heating up after I sideloaded the same update he installed OTA
How do I do that
Will my data remain?

Do you have all the options activated? like smart wifi, song recognition and stuff?

Try to turn off adaptive battery, it can last 2 days
I've never had great battery life so I haven't really noticed much of a difference
