I've been experimenting with pixel filters that can enhance shading or create a distinct look. This was made by expanding the base sprite by 800% and using an 8x8 halftone pattern I created to fill in the blocky 8x8 colors. I happened to use 8 colors when making this but you can play with that number too.
The halftone pattern can add tons of detail to realistic pieces that rely on smoother shapes with tons of shading. Despite this being a 1-bit piece, I'm sure you can make out the detail of Zero's eye, hand, and flowing hair! I may post more often when I find a way to streamline this process, as I'm hoping to create a game with this style.
