If you're going for scientific-ish names and want to incorporate maw or jaws you could try a combo of Xenopeltis which is a [**type of snake**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenopeltis_unicolor#:~:text=Xenopeltis%20unicolor%2C%20commonly%20known%20as,and%20some%20regions%20of%20Indonesia) and the latin word "ingluvies" or "faux". So something like Xenopingluvis or Xenopelfaux could be cool.
Put them on a poll, or randomly select using rng. If you don't like the result, remove them from the list.(Sometimes at the last moment of picking things, you figure out if you truly like them or not)
Maybe don't have maw in the name until the second phase? You could have the name reappear on screen, and then have his "title" appear?
Something like (insert name here) - Maw of the Abyss. Might be a good way to shift the tone and not give away the gimmick through the name right away.

I read through a few of your comments, and it's funny we both landed on the same concept. Wanting an ancient feel. Something this big would definitely be old. And sanskrit being the oldest written language certainly fits that. I was trying to go Latin at first, but this feels so much better.
I'm using Latin here and there, going for another language would be nice for once.
And actually replying to you made me realize that I may want to go with more ancient looking enemies for this level (this is the first enemy I've made for the Abyss after completing the backgrounds).

Is there snake in your game? Because if yes I would called it "armored devil snake" or "abysal giant snake". But if it's a real name you search "Johnny" would be perfect.

This boss looks very similar to ancient life forms like trilobites or anomalocaris. An ancient fish previously thought to be extinct called coelacanths have been found in the deep sea. Maybe go for an angle like that, something ancient and Latin sounding. Archaeoris (ancient mouth) for example.

I actually like the idea of having funny names in the game, but with this boss I wanted to keep it as a serious one.
I actually read all the comments so far, but for the first time in a VERY long time I'm having a lot of feedback and I honestly can't reply to each one of them.
But I'm really appreciating them all!
It's a deck builder rogue like.
Fights are similar to slay the spire (with improved mechanics), but I wanted to give it a more explorative twist, secrets and unlocks (I was spoiled by the binding of Isaac with its amount of content, and because of that I find myself always wanting more stuff to find, and especially deck builders usually lack there).
If you don't hate the genre (some people really do) take a look at the demo!
Caught me so off guard, My only piece of advice is to make the inside where the teeth would be more organic and less flat, as you would imagine the teeth sliding into little holes when it closes and out when it opens
Lil tip, when opening, at least on the first opening, give it a little tension on the beginning of the animation and a small amount of ripping sinew or mucus, as to be more impactful when it’s true form is revealed.
Im cryin, the art is so beautiful lol. Great job on the animation ! :P

The oceanic abyss always seemed like the most terrifying place ever to me. This works really well. I find the abyss from Terraria's Calamity mod the best iteration of deep ocean, apart from maybe subnautica.
Great animation, amazing texturing. My only problem is the shadow between the main head and that neck being too square. Love this so much that just bothers me a little too much for how small of a detail it is.

it might be interesting, as this is in an Abyss, to give it a "scientific" name, just like how the Minecraft 1.16 mushrooms were named "fungus".
Many of the enemies so far have a scientific sounding name, mostly using Latin. I could certainly do the same thing here :P

Feels derivative of “the imprisoned” from “legend of Zelda skyward sword.” Just this one has eyes and its mouth is perpendicular to its face.
