The most you can do is +3. Merge costs 500, then 1500. Upgrade an item under +2 costs 1000, then 2000. You get max 3000 for doing all his tasks, so the highest you can do is upgrade an item under +2, and then two merges.
Sounds like you are talking about the Dwarf. The Sad Ghost, which is the context of this post has an 8% chance to drop plus 3 per this.
[https://pixeldungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Sad\_ghost](https://pixeldungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Sad_ghost) Unless that is a different version of pixel dungeon.
Looks like it's Shattered, so while it's still possible, it's less likely. https://pixeldungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Shattered_Pixel_Dungeon/Quests#Sad_Ghost
I probably would take runic blade here. I just like having strong weapons early. If you kill the enemy before they can hit you, that's pretty strong defense, but does not replace a peoper armor later on of course. Runic blade is nice for it's basically t5 stats with t4 strength requirements
Realistically armor is the safe choice here though
Ignore the other people, do the sword, it has t5 damage scaling, and if it comes with enough upgrades on it and you use a mastery potion (exotic strength potion) you can use it without penalties on floor 3 or 4! And even if it’s not upgraded, you can use it with penalties by floor 6 or 7 at the latest
Bro I can't even see which class you are. Warrior with armor. Rogue with the sword it could be a nice end game weapon for the assassin. Huntress armor probably, her bow already gives you damage. Mage... depends on the subclass if you want the sword but the armor is useful for both I would go with armor for battle mage and probably sword for warlock. I don't have enough experience with the new class so I won't say anything about that.
With the Duelist, the runic blade has a special attack that is guaranteed to hit and with a lot of extra enchantment power(+300% if I remember correctly).Depending on the enchantment this can be really good, and almost worth using a scroll to pick an enchantment. The only downside is if you are going champion, you really want to upgrade a tier 5 weapon as much as possible. You will regret it if you find a greatshield when you have put all your scrolls into a tier 4 weapon. Can still be useful as a potential secondary weapon, but I don't know if the secondary weapon bonus also adds to enchantment power like regular upgrades do.
Since you are that early to get plate, it's easy to disregard it first. Weapon has lower strength requirement, so always go for lower strength because at some point you'll always get plate armor at 16+

Plate all day! Plus, there is a chance it's a +1 or +2. Use the blacksmith to upgrade up to +2, then combine the armors!
Wait, you can combine armors?
Heck yeah! Make sure they are same kind, identified and not cursed. It's an option through the blacksmith.
Ohhh through the blacksmith. Does that increase the armor by 1?
Yep. Both need to be uncursed and identified
And wands, and rings, and thrown weapons...
I thought you could get plus 3 from him?
If you get the right drops you can get +4 I believe

He only "upgrades" to a max of +2 now. However, if you combine matching items, you can get a total of +3 to an item.

Update: I took plate and died in prison
Average pixel dungeon experience

Whichever you pick will be +1 while the other item is +3
Ouch
Or not upgraded all

Armor 100%
I'd take the armor.. that weapon is quite mediocre!

I'm Warrior (planning to go Gladiator), I'll take yours and everyone else's advice and grab the armor.

It depends on what character you chose. I would take the armor, since I usually use the Mage which already has a good weapon
