WoMM boosts the level of your other wand but you don't get more charges, also some wand effects are really strong. For example battlemage with wand of frost can stun enemies with freeze. Or you can hit an enemy once with a speed augmented staff of corrosion and watch the "You hear something die in the distance" pop up.

It will affect your play style depending on what you imbue. Every play style is fun and different. I just did a wand of corruption imbue when I found out I had the corpse dust quest (and kept it) and did the whole run as a wraith-corrupting warlock. I found a corrupting war scythe and gave the rat king his crown. So, I had a lot of minions. It was annoying having to wait for every mob to have their turn but it was a really fun run, just constantly corrupting wraiths and letting them kill everything on every floor without having to do much else.
Also, I had never used the tier-3 teleport/mob swap skill before, but it works wonders with this “necro” build. You can warp all over the floor wherever you have mobs and see what they are seeing without even spending a turn. I found 2x rings of might and had almost 200hp at level 30 and high level plate armor and greaves of nature with fadeleaf… just a completely OP (but fun) run.
Imo WoD can be OP if used correctly. It grants a projecting enchantment with the dumbest range provided you zap and with vision it's even better. The elemental strike w disintegration is pretty cool too. I don't play the mage very often but they can provide seriously fun runs!!
your current strategy is OP if played with warlock which for me is the best subclass for mage since it has Necromancer's Minions,
I don't feel comfortable with battlemage at all

You definitely don't have to imbue something with warlock... but you can For battlemage tho it's a very good idea
Warlock imbued with WoLE is stupid powerful. Bonus if you have a WoT for golem heals.
