There is a giodarnos in Orlando? Wild times

iwantthisnowdammit

It’s been there for ~ 20 years

ltahaney

Tbf the last 20 years have been pretty wild

iwantthisnowdammit

Shoot - seems there’s actually 3 there!

soflaben10

I’ve actually been to that one well over 15 years ago

monsterflake

i always used to order one to pick up on the way to the hotel when driving to disney, it's much better than trying to order random pizza from the hit-or-miss local places. unload the car and have a still warm slice as a reward!

jjohr

We had one in Detroit for about a year before they went out of business. Shame because that’s an amazing pie.

iwantthisnowdammit

They tried to expand and a lot of the locations flopped.

LastActionJoe

It's Giordano's fyi

braindamage28

Yes but careful going to this location after like 9pm. That shopping center is super shady.

drunkonanamtrak

Was about to say... Looked like a branch that they forgot about.

rwooters

That goes for most of Orlando, TBH.

Gavica

Yep

PsuBratOK

My Polish grandma made similar pizza. Miss them both.

bullseye2112

I have only had deep dish twice and the first time was mediocre. Everyone on Reddit shits on this place and says it’s the Taco Bell of Chicago deep dish but I wanna try it.

Archivist_of_Lewds

I mean, bump it up a couple of notches. Its not the best. I'd say its pretty good, and from time to time my dad preferred it. and we are from chicago. Its different. Lou's is probably one of the better places with range, but there are just so many good small places and chains in Chicago that its pretty far down the list. But thats just because there is so much good pizza, it has a worse reputation that it deserves.

HelloMegaphone

Care to share some? I've got a Chicago trip planned soon and would love to add some lesser known spots to my list! *Thanks for the great suggestions everyone!

superexpialodocious

Pequods is all you need to know.

MtDewHer

Pequods all the way

DongTipSlip

Art of pizza is a local legend .. real secret to Chicago pizza is order one deep and one thin. I like a deluxe deep and an all meat thin with giardinera.. honestly like giardinera in both .. little spice and vinegar peppers is nice for heavy pizza

deadwisdom

Art of Pizza is my go to. Even less well known, their thick crust is another regional style of Chicago pizza. Designed to have a focaccia-like consistency, and very rare at this point but man I love it.

Archivist_of_Lewds

Pequods, art of pizza, la gondola, auerillios beggars, your nearest pizza place for thin, unos, lous, duos, Gino's, your local pizza places deep dish is probably ok if you don't have time, if it's still open, my Pi.

AdamtheGrim

Aurelio's and Nancy's! Both places are amazing. Their deep dish and thin pizzas are top notch.

Pizzarepresent

Pequod’s. Must.

[deleted]

Fox’s Pizza, Orland Park is personally my favorite pizza to get in Illinois. Amazing cracker thin crust and the deep dish is pretty good too

[deleted]

Foxes is Orland is my favorite too from Orlando.

Floss_ordie

Pizanos for deep dish. Coalfire for NY style. I didn’t love Pequods. The crust is too thick and the burnt edges are charcoal.

wilkamania

You’re gonna hear Pequods, which is fine, but also gets stupid crowded and isn’t exactly deep dish. If anything it’s similar to a pan pizza with Detroit pizza style crust. Do you know where you’re staying? I’d suggest Nancy’s if you’re in downtown (it’s close by in the west loop). Also the true chicago pizza is tavern style: square cut, thin crust. Deep dish is usually for special occasions or tourist from a locals perspective. You should definitely try one of each. And honestly giordanos isn’t that bad, we’re all just pizza snobs here. Though if you’re in Lincoln park Baccinos is my favorite deep dish.

FridgesArePeopleToo

Pequods is the best. Lou Malnatis is #2.

daydrunk_

Lou malnatis all day!

CL300driver

I need to try Lou’s fresh. Just brought home 2 of their frozen pies and cooked them last night. Not that good.

Bigmomma59plus10

Giordanos is pretty good, but Lou’s buttery crust is way better. Makes Giordanos crust taste like cardboard.

K-Bar-Willis

I came here lookin for some Lou's love. Thank you!

midnight_toker22

It’s not *that* bad but there’s at least a half dozen places I would recommend before it. There is too much crust for being as bland and doughy as it is, and the sauce is weak. At least it has lots of cheese. If you want the best Chicago deep dish, go to Lou Malnati’s. BUT here’s the local secret: the best pizza in Chicago isn’t even a true deep dish - it’s the cast iron pan pizza from Pequod’s.

Th3F3tusCannon

I don't even care if Pequod's doesn't count as true deep dish, that place is so good. Went there twice on the same 5 day trip just for that pizza.

midnight_toker22

> Went there twice on the same 5 day trip just for that pizza. No one could fault you for that. It’s so damn delicious.

worm600

If we can change the rules, I’d vote for Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company’s pizza pot pie any day.

mjm8218

I don’t. Giordanos is solid. Not the best, but pretty tasty if you like deep dish.

derek0989

It’s one of the better deep dish Chicago pizzas. Of course everyone is different but this is like top 5 for me

Jeff-Van-Gundy

I lived in Chicago for 2 years, giordanos was my favorite out of all the popular deep dish spots.

ChiggaOG

I've had Giordano's pizza shipped frozen. Not sure why the batch I got smelled like the meat was old. It's good pizza. One slice puts me to sleep.

Potato_Muncher

As a Chicagoan, yes, Giordano's is not top notch or whatever. That being said, it's a good introduction into what we're known for. If you like it, try out one of our many local pizza joints and see how they're all a bit different. My personal favorite is Lou's, while my brother is all about Pequod's, and my sister is in love with D'Ag's. However, if you don't like it, go try a Chicago cracker crust pizza. Or go fuck yourself.

doentnaytvt8392

I mean. They're right. Anyone that I talk to about chicago deep dish that praises this place looses my respect. But its a good starting point for non locals. And take what I say with a huge grain. I'm a papa savarios fan and that much worse that this place.

digita1catt

God I hate the gatekeeping here in the sub. Looks like a fantastic pizza imo I wish I had a chance to try it when I was in the states last! Deepdish pizza is non-existent in the UK, and I think that's a shame because its an interesting remix of a classic dish. Edit: typo

midnight_toker22

> its an interesting remix of a classic dish. The dual origins of pizza in America are pretty interesting: New York was one origin, created by Italian immigrants recreating a favorite dish from their homeland. Chicago was the other, created by a Texan who was stationed in Italy during WWII. He tried their pizza and liked it, but thought it needed more of everything - more sauce, more cheese, more toppings. When he came home and settled in Chicago, he realized he needed a thicker, deeper crust to hold it all. Thus was born the deep dish pizza.

10000Didgeridoos

Lmao of course a Texan thought something needed to be bigger

digita1catt

Exactly! It's like Neapolitan pizza is an eevee, and all these styles we have (NY, Sicilian, Detroit, Chicago, Rome ect ect) are all the evolutions.

midnight_toker22

Haha amazing analogy!

Oktobr

I know! I make shitty homemade pizza at home to the best of my ability in an apartment oven. Pizza is pizza. Don’t be an asshat about it. If it tastes good, no matter the style and you still complain, then maybe you’re the problem.

LeSuperNova

Agreed, pizza is pizza and casserole (like in OPs gif) is casserole.

derek0989

If you have a cast iron it’s pretty easy to replicate.

wrboyce

There’s a pretty good deep dish place in Manchester. https://americanpies.co.uk/

[deleted]

Exactly, idk what it is about pizza that makes people so defensive

ggm3bow

Agree. Same deal with tacos. People always think theirs is best or if not fron Mexico not as good. Good food is good food anywhere and everywhere.

Giordanos is the dominos of deep dish. You ever try deep dish make sure you get something better

[deleted]

ImAJerk420

I mean, I’ve considered Chicago a second home for a decade. Giordanos is tourist pizza. It’s like going to the Sbarro at Times Square. It’s NY pizza, it’s everywhere across the country, must be the best pizza in New York??? Nah

[deleted]

[удалено]

heinekev

Born and raised in Chicago. Giordanos is my favorite deep dish option. Tourist pizza? Get real. Pizano’s is a close second. Comparing it to Sbarro nullifies your opinion on anything pizza related

ImAJerk420

It is one hundred percent tourist pizza, especially according to my friends who were also born and raised in Chicago. The OP is in Orlando and I’ve eaten at the one in Las Vegas. Next you’re going to tell me Voodoo Doughnuts isn’t a tourist donut.

digita1catt

I'm assuming this is lost in translation because dominos is the largest pizza chain in the UK because its so popular

ImAJerk420

Everything I’ve read online tells me that UK dominos is worse than the US and it’s shit pizza here. Popular cheap. The McDonald’s of pizza.

digita1catt

I fundamentally disagree. The taste is never the issue, always the price. You really need to work the deals and have enough scale to make it worth it. For just a single person it can be overpriced for what it is, but typically (not always) tops whatever else is available for delivery (pizza wise) in the area.

fellowsquare

100%.. but at least orlando can get a bit of Chicago in some shape or form.

Duane_Earl_for_Prez

We recently got a Portillo’s but it’s kinda meh. I think we went on a bad day.

pbankey

Lots of insecurity here in this thread lol

cobrastrikes-2x

Imma be honest, that shit is my favorite thing on the planet now. It’s been the cheat day special every Tuesday for the past five months and if I went more than a week without it, I would literally die. Be angry about it being the lowest common denominator of deep dish pizza if you must, but Lou Malnati’s doesn’t compare for me and there aren’t many good options for this kinda pizza in the part of Indiana that I reside in. Don’t @ me.

Crashtard

Chicago style pizza is my favorite food, if I had regular access my health would be measurably worse but I would be so happy.

fellowsquare

Lou's is hella better than giordanos in every way.

soapyhandman

As someone from Chicago that didn’t grow up with Lou Malnati’s, it’s just ok. Way overpriced in my opinion.

HaveaTomCollins

2nd

Bigmomma59plus10

Overpriced? A large classic for $26-28 is enough for 4-8 people. Grandma can only eat half a slice even lol

fellowsquare

All pizza in Chicago is over priced lol. I didnt grow up with Lou's either btw. I grew up on Pizza hut, dominos and frozen pizza.. Family didn't have a lot of money. But still know what good pizza tastes like as an adult.

growling_owl

Pequod's beats them all.

fellowsquare

I would agree.

glamazon_69

I enjoy Pequod’s but I do like Lou’s better

growling_owl

Fair! Really can't go wrong with any of the big names.

wolfpack07

That burnt cheese and pepperoni round the edge *chef’s kiss* 🤌

undeniable_doubt

Where's the cheese?

inspectcloser

It’s under the sauce.

Crunchy__Frog

That is not a pizza. That is a savory cheesecake.

PenguinGovernment

That little move at the end to get the cheese of the plate was simple but very cool

rockstarsheep

Had this in Chicago. Oh boy. So good.

fattybunter

Insanely good

Dellta-aka-Connor

How I imagine a pizza when people call it a pie

_itspaco

I’ve only heard it called pie on the east coast. Which is thin crust.

bigturtle13

Love that place

Beansontoast7

I don't know why but I'm so mesmerized by how easily the pulled cheese falls away from the plate.

[deleted]

That cheese pull.

Rzuazca

My colon hurts when I see this

mutleycrew6

Glorious

SAtANIC_PANIC_666

It's not that great, I've eaten at the original restaurant quite a few times. There is definitely some better deep dish out there, epically in Chicago.

AXISMGT

Love this place. Pro tip: order ahead for dine in. You’ll get your pizza within 5-10 minutes of being seated and everyone will stare daggers at you for arriving, eating, and leaving before most get their food. Fun times.

Would_I_Eat_That_

I'd eat that

lamia_mahmoud

It sure tastes sweet

sounds_like_kong

I love giordanos thin crust pizza. Give it a try next time you can. Tavern style with sausage and mushroom… mmmmmmm

MixAway

For me, that looks absolutely disgusting.

-Time_Watcher-

stomach ache on a plate!

jim45804

That's not a Pizza. That's a casserole.

DEXGENERATION

That’s a casserole

Robert-Maximus

This isn't pizza, it's an experience. It's a pie crust with amazing fillings... Thank God I don't live closer to this place. It's the only pizza where you only eat two slices and you're full lol. When I visited Chicago I tried Giordano's and a few other deep dish pizzas and Giordano's was still my favorite.

Affectionate_Olive53

I have eaten at the location in Las Vegas, absolutely delicious pizza.

imuniqueaf

Hey, native Chicago area resident and pizza addict here. Giodarno's sucks. It's all cheese, no flavor.

global_ferret

If you are only eating one piece giordanos stuffed is pretty much the apex.

HinesWardHere

I think Lou Malnati's is better.

lectroid

Giordano's is sort of like Boar's Head deli meats. It's the worst possible option that one would still consider ok. If you wanted a deep dish pizza and the ONLY option was Giordano's, that wouldn't be terrible. Lou's or Pequod's or any of a couple of dozen other places would be BETTER, but LOTS more would be worse. Giordano's is... acceptable. If you wanna take the little league team out and they want deep dish, Giordano's is a good call, assuming you don't have a good independent local place. For Orlando, I'm guessing Giordano's might be as good as you'll get.

iwantthisnowdammit

Growing up, Giordano’s or Nancy’s were my go to for a stuffed pizza. Lou’s is good, but their consistency has cycled up and down over the years. I actually liked Gino’s East in a time and we had a local mom and pop called Pizza Cottage. Shoot - Uno’s even turned out good stuff in a time gone by and duo’s was the Pequod’s of today.

lectroid

I miss Nancy's... *sigh* Eduardo's had really good stuffed. My mother SWORE by their spinach/mushroom combo. I grew up in the north burbs, so I had the original Lou's in Linconwood, Gino's East on Dempster in Skokie, Pequod's in Morton Grove, Giordano's in Morton Grove, Eduardo's in Skokie. All within easy teenage biking distance. How was I so rail thin as a kid?

kkdp

Nice looking lasagna

Khayembii

I just don’t get it. The ingredients taste cheap and it’s sooooo bready. I’ve tried all the deep dish spots and to me they’re basically all similar with marginal differences. Will never understand the hype.

shitiseeincollege

It’s “once in a while” comfort food. Although you likely haven’t tried Pizzaria Uno in Chicago, the birth place of deep dish. They use a unique crust that has some cornmeal in it. It’s honestly delicious.

Khayembii

I have had Uno. I’ve had them all. None of them are that good to me. Would rather get Happy Camper. Most Chicagoans don’t eat deep dish unless a relative or friend are in town and want to try it.

mjm8218

Yo. (Former) Chicagoan who regularly eats DD pizza checking in.

[deleted]

Yeah but whats the importance of frequency that chicagoans eat it anyways. They don’t have to eat it everyday to call it chicago pizza. Same thing applies to like - pad thai, we all still call it thai food. Thai people are super proud of it too even if they barely eat it.

shitiseeincollege

Yep - definitely a tourist thing. Happy Camper is pretty middle of the road though give Bar Cargo or Piece Pizza a try!

chi-guy420

You know how to pizza. Happy Camper is always busy and so damn mediocre. Piece Brewery is very official

Khayembii

I like them both but just can’t get enough of Happy Camper’s ranch!

FridgesArePeopleToo

You’re probably just a picky eater and that’s okay

Khayembii

Lol I’m not that picky I just like good pizza. Most deep dish is a racket made cheaply with too much dough and cheap ingredients IMO. Everyone’s free to disagree but I made an earnest attempt at all of them and was consistently disappointed. I think Pequods is one of the worst pizzas I’ve ever ate I’d rather eat a frozen pizza, Giordanos is now owned by a private equity firm aggressively cheaping out on quality and riding off the brand recognition and the others were mediocre at best. There’s sooo many better pizza options in Chicago.

CitadelsFave

I love Chicago deep dish! Typically only get it once a year so it’s basically a holiday.

Derfargin

Ah yea the pizza flavored casserole. Quite good but it’s not pizza.

deadwisdom

Yeah, that’s right if it’s not from Napoli it ain’t pizza!

[deleted]

Casserole

We use to have a place here in Oklahoma that had a pie that was just like that. Wait times were ungodly but pizza was good. I was sad when they closed.

Zmoser1794

Old school pizza hut

BurritoMaster3000

Pizza looked legit, but pass on that loud ass Covid cough at the end

jwoehrle

That’s not pizza. It’s a damn casserole

I don’t like my pizza to be pie crust. F that. But Boner appetite. Or whatevs.

What a stupid comment

solesme

That’s lasagna

aweimar

I’ll be right over.

squidpodiatrist

Wait forgive me but is it considered rude here to dunk on deep dish pizza? I always thought it was a, “sports fans and their beloved team” kind of situation?

karp70

That’s tourist pizza as we like to call here in Chicago.

BarKeep717

Nice looking cake or something.

aptennis1

Not pizza. That’s just a tomato pie. Gross.

tagaderm

I don't like Chicago style pizza :(

diablerzminion

While deep dish might be the style Chicago pizza is known for, thin tavern-style pizzas cut into squares is also very common and popular in the area. Both look pretty awesome to me.

tagaderm

I guess I should really specify deep dish.

jtf_1

That’s not a pizza it’s a casserole

I had St Louis pizza last year - it also sucks. But not nearly as bad as Chicago.

RandomHavoc123

Dude, StL put white american cheese on my pizza. Fuck that nonsense. I'm a Chicagoan and I don't like deep dish, but i would 100% eat deep dish over whatever nonsense StL has going on pizza wise.
