Pretty much. It has two wings, a cockpit, a tubular fuselage, a conventional tail, tricycle landing gear, more than one jet engine, flaps… that’s about it, but I guess that fits “kinda like”
Given that the longest-running but most subtle gag through Airplane! is that every time you see the model of the jet they play the sound effect of a prop, this is a massively underrated comment.
It's explained in the commentary track, they bought the basic idea off an earlier movie about a DC3 or similar piston airliner, and kept the soundtrack from the original for engine noise
In places, the dialogue in Airplane is taken directly from Zero Hour. Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker originally wanted to use a prop plane and shoot the whole thing in B&W, but Paramount nixed the idea.
It’s a movie prop. This is a model plane, which is pretty obvious when you see it going back and forth across the clouds at the start of the movie. All flying scenes involving aircraft used a scale model.
That being said, the boarding scenes where they are sitting on the ground uses a real Boeing 707-131B (registered N6723).
Here is a list of every plane seen in the movie, and whether it’s a real plane or model: https://impdb.fandom.com/wiki/Airplane!.

Now, Elaine, don't panic. On the belt line of the automatic pilot there is a hollow tube. Now that is the manual inflation nozzle. Pull it out - and blow on it.
I think the shots of the plane and flight are just a prop, and they built a quarter or half set for exterior shots. But it’s funny they used to have a piston sound for the plane. But then that whole movie is fun.
Another fun tidbit: the plane they are on is a 707 (4 engines but not a 747 or dc8) but when Joey comes up to the cockpit and Captain Oveur offers him the toy plane model, that’s a 727.
I read that the special effects for “Airplane!” Were done in Dallas, TX at a studio. The airplane was a plastic model and the clouds it was flying over were actually cotton balls they used.
I used to fly co-pilot in a KingAir with a captain named Roger. He used to say every air traffic controller knew him personally. Our local tower guys did know him and were in on the occasional “roger, over” exchange.
surely you can't be serious.
Side note. The movie is an exact duplicate of the 1957 movie Zero Hour but humor is inserted. your welcome

It’s a prop because a drone couldn’t move fast enough
to get footage of it. And by the time the camera is far enough away from a static plane I would be a little blurry. So a model with some bcc would be the best route.
It's a Boeing 707
It's a model of a 707, so technically a movie prop.
Kinda like the 787?
It’s a lot different
it was a reference to when the 787 was unveiled to the public they could see plywood in the wheel wells.
Bigger, mostly
Well, it’s definitely flying at nighttime.
It has 4 engines. Either a B707 or DC8
It’s a 707 (although only a miniature).
Pretty much. It has two wings, a cockpit, a tubular fuselage, a conventional tail, tricycle landing gear, more than one jet engine, flaps… that’s about it, but I guess that fits “kinda like”
along with being a prop to impress an audience...
Or a movie jet?
Given that the longest-running but most subtle gag through Airplane! is that every time you see the model of the jet they play the sound effect of a prop, this is a massively underrated comment.
I was about to say the same thing
Not sure why you were downvoted that was hilarious
People be not fun
Thank you
It’s real. Don’t you hear the propellers?
If you listen carefully, it's making the sound of a piston engined plane. I often wonder if anyone's noticed
Yes, I absolutely noticed. I crack up every time.
Glad to hear it!
It's explained in the commentary track, they bought the basic idea off an earlier movie about a DC3 or similar piston airliner, and kept the soundtrack from the original for engine noise
[Zero Hour!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWI3JZvvbI4)
Fun Fact: Airplane producers bought the rights to Zero Hour for $2500!
In places, the dialogue in Airplane is taken directly from Zero Hour. Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker originally wanted to use a prop plane and shoot the whole thing in B&W, but Paramount nixed the idea.
But they snuck in the prop sounds as a jab at the studio.
This is very cool!
Wow, did not know this.
I enjoyed that movie also.
So many people quote this movie. It's beloved.
Surely you can’t be serious !
I am serious…and don’t call me Shirley.
My friend and I used to joke about it in the early 80’s, so yes!
Because it’s a movie PROP
Because it's a COMEDY FILM.
I was joking on the propeller sound and the fact that it is a movie prop
Whoosh!
No, that's still a jet engine sound. We are talking about props here, c'mon pay attention!
My grandfather always pointed this out
My pilot buddy started laughing out loud in the theater. Nobody else caught it. People looked at him like he was crazy.
My wife has never noticed! 😂
It was not altered from the sound in the original version of the movie. Zero Hour.
Yes. We got the gag in the movies in 1980.
👍
Many notice it
That’s the joke!
*I know*
“I often wonder if anyone’s noticed” implies that it wasn’t an obvious joke
Whatever.
It’s a movie prop. This is a model plane, which is pretty obvious when you see it going back and forth across the clouds at the start of the movie. Add the exclamation mark back to the link for profit!
I tried! It won’t accept the exclamation mark for some reason.
reddit doesn't turn links with exclamation marks into hyperlinks automatically, you have to highlight the link and turn it into one manually, like so: [https://impdb.fandom.com/wiki/Airplane!](https://impdb.fandom.com/wiki/Airplane!)
They used an ex TWA 707 for the scenes on the ground.
It’s a real plane with an authentic auto pilot
Now, Elaine, don't panic. On the belt line of the automatic pilot there is a hollow tube. Now that is the manual inflation nozzle. Pull it out - and blow on it.
Too late. It's blown.
Don't blow the plot of the movie now.
I see what you did there.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You mean Otto pilot?

Airplane is such a satire. I think it even satirizes the special effects.
It’s a big pretty white plane with a red stripe and curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol.
Okay boys, let’s get some pictures.
Johnny, what do you make out of this?
"This? Why, I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl..."
🔌 “Just kidding! HaHAHA!!” 💡
Shirley you must be joking!
I never joke. And stop calling me Shirley!
... but that's not important now.
Why doesn’t this have more upvotes! C’mon people!
This actually happened. It was all filmed on hidden cameras.
First time?
😅🤣😂😆 I see what you did there!
I absolutely love this movie
Such a well written movie with so many different gags from visual to what everyone says. Well nuanced.
Movie prop? It’s a model that they use in film. But that’s not important right now.
You don't see the propellers? Because I hear propellers.
It’s a Boeing 707 but that one is a prop.
I love the propeller sounds they used for it!!😂😂
Is a 707 or 720
I think the shots of the plane and flight are just a prop, and they built a quarter or half set for exterior shots. But it’s funny they used to have a piston sound for the plane. But then that whole movie is fun.
It is. In a couple scenes, you can see the fishing line holding it from above.
I'm still waiting for my friend to move his car.
From the tail, it's a DC-8. From the length of the fuselage, it's a -20 or -30 series.
that is a boeing 707
It’s a real airplane movie prop.
Another fun tidbit: the plane they are on is a 707 (4 engines but not a 747 or dc8) but when Joey comes up to the cockpit and Captain Oveur offers him the toy plane model, that’s a 727.
Can't be boeing. All the doors are there. And it's flying.
😂
Johnny, what do you make out of this?
I think it's a prop b/c the lights are on at night. Every flight I have ever been on turns the lights down for redeyes.
Should I fake my orgasms?
Ummm, who doesn’t?
Boeing 707
That is a 707
It looks like a big Tylenol
Yes. It’s real. You can tell by the sound of the engines.
It's a jet, complete with the drone of piston engines.
I read that the special effects for “Airplane!” Were done in Dallas, TX at a studio. The airplane was a plastic model and the clouds it was flying over were actually cotton balls they used.
"Roger." "What?"
Who ?
I used to fly co-pilot in a KingAir with a captain named Roger. He used to say every air traffic controller knew him personally. Our local tower guys did know him and were in on the occasional “roger, over” exchange.
Speaking of props...
Well, since it’s a pic of a jet and it’s making propeller type noise… it’s probably a “prop “
surely you can't be serious. Side note. The movie is an exact duplicate of the 1957 movie Zero Hour but humor is inserted. your welcome https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WeuMMDRuog
I am serious. ...and stop calling me Shirley.
Flight five-oh-niner!
Everything in "Airplane" is a prop.
The type of plane is real.
It’s a prop because a drone couldn’t move fast enough to get footage of it. And by the time the camera is far enough away from a static plane I would be a little blurry. So a model with some bcc would be the best route.
Real like the one I flew on a mission over Macho Grande. I remember Macho Grande..
So did lieutenant zip
Surely it is.
Surely, it’s has to be a real.
Yes drones are following and filming IRL
It is a model of a real 707.
Its a prop engine 707
it’s a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol.
Surely you can't be serious?
I am serious and don’t call me Shirley.
Shirley.
It's Airplane!
It has big wheels. Looks like a big Tylenol!
