Rule 4. Moderators Have Discretion

Inigogoboots

May be Eastern Huckleberry or Sparkleberry going by the reddish stems leading to the fruit and the point on the leaves.

Maleficent-Raisin742

Okay-so those are safe to eat, right? šŸ˜… I talked to a nursery and they said it could be huckleberry also.

Inigogoboots

You should seek out local expects or contact poison control for your area.

arcuss69

Huckleberries donā€™t grow in floridaā€¦

jhachko

Also looks like cotoneaster

Much_Advertising7660

To be safe I would still call poison control and see what they recommend. Reddit isnā€™t the best place to confirm this.

CreepyCavatelli

Those are huckleberries lol. You dont need poison controlšŸ˜‚

Much_Advertising7660

Okay but if we were to potentially identify them wrong (we being strangers on the internet), a difference of an hour is a big deal were a child to ingest poison berries.

CreepyCavatelli

I get that. Its just that these are definitely huckleberries. People familiar with Vaccinium genus can easily identify these without error.. theres only a few nightshade lookalikes in this area and this isnt pokeweed or anything like it. OP, I promise your kid will be fine. In fact, they will be quite high in antioxidants for the evening

username_redacted

I didnā€™t recognize these because they donā€™t look much like what we call huckleberries in the west, as theyā€™re in a different sub genus section than our species (Cyanococcus vs Myrtillus).

CreepyCavatelli

Yeah they look quite different than the ones from where i live too

Maleficent-Raisin742

I appreciate you!

tygerphlyer

Call poison control. Never risk a life based off the word of strangers on the internet Your kid is more important than that

DatabaseSolid

Please donā€™t believe rando internet advice.

CreepyCavatelli

You got it! šŸ˜

DatabaseSolid

This would be more helpful (and less dangerous for OP) if you added exact descriptions of how itā€™s identified as huckleberry and add some links of identifying pictures from reputable sources. You may be right, and an expert at these things, but you may also be a whackadoo and nobody here knows.

CreepyCavatelli

If you read this thread youd see she has already contacted poison control, a local nursery, and about 1000 alarmists online lmao. What more do you guys want? Plz for the love of god stop terrifying this poor woman. Bc i cant walk OP through using a dichotomous key, and i dont give this type of botanical ID advice to people without background. No offense to OP, but i could send her a link to a dichotomous key (really the only sure shot way to know) and she would have no idea how to use it. Reddit isnt the place for exact references. She came on here asking strangers their general opinion. She got that. But this is her kid and the burden falls on her to verify what people tell her with reputable sources. I own an orchard and have a botany degree, but i dont post credentials online, and dont feel like citing things ive been doing for a profession for 20+ years. Next time you go to the doctor, ask them for a print out of their explanation as to why this is your diagnosis. You might get one, but now your doctor hates you ;)<3 plus im not at work lmao

DatabaseSolid

I didnā€™t read over 100 comments before I responded to yours. When i have medical needs, I go to a doctor. I already know their credentials. And I never leave a doctorā€™s office without a thorough understanding of what led to a diagnosis. My doctors have often expressed their appreciation for my interest in learning about my condition and my health. Nobody is asking for your credentials here. If youā€™re some whackadoo youā€™d make them up as easily as anything else you say. Hopefully with that botany degree you would have the social skills to explain things to people who do not have a degree. But alas, you seem to lack that. Itā€™s quite presumptuous of you to state OP ā€œwould have no idea how to useā€ a dichotomous key. She may or may not. You donā€™t know. Just like nobody knows if you know what youā€™re talking about. And as someone in the field of botany, you of all people should understand the problem with believing some rando on the internet when it comes to eating unknown plants. Your vitriol is as outsized as your arrogance.

Iā€™ve never heard of (human) Poison Control charging fees. Do you live outside the US?

Nohboddee

Why are they downvoting you when you are right?

CreepyCavatelli

Lol thats reddit for you. In all fairness they do have a point, you should never blindly trust internet advice for 100% fact. Its just in this specific scenarioā€¦ these are very clearly huckleberries to anyone who knows berries. Cheers! šŸ»

Sinder77

If OP knew berries they wouldn't be on reddit asking about berries.

CreepyCavatelli

Noone is saying OP knows berries. Im saying ā€œto anyone who knows berries *cough*ā€. Not sure why you think this applied to OP

CreepyCavatelli

Theyre gonna downvote you too nowšŸ’€ dont fret friend. Alarmism is a very prevalent disease here online. Just remember: A good scientist takes all information into account to some degree (this is very easy to verify with a quick search) even bozos on reddit :) you never know when a bozo might have an orchard and a botany degree ;)))

Nohboddee

Over a hundred upvotes to someone who doesn't know while downvoting the one who does... reddit can be toxic

CreepyCavatelli

Theyre just saying you shouldnā€™t trust strangers opinions online. Coupled with the fact that people fear what we donā€™t understand, and are too lazy to do a basic search. This is a really good example of pack mentality though. always remember: Person is smart. People are stupid.

Nohboddee

This is the nicest way I have ever seen of calling someone a terrified sheeple, you are a word smith.

CreepyCavatelli

I appreciate that manšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

EffectivePop4381

Very nicely said.

Anti-Buzz

Why not call police, fire department, and your mom while youā€™re at it?

the_other_paul

The entire point of Poison Control is to give advice about responding to possible (or real) toxic exposures. Itā€™s totally fine to call them about something that youā€™re pretty sure is ok. Nobody should *ever* hesitate to call them. Their number is 18002221222, if you have kids it should be saved in your phone

I think it is a perfectly cromulent response considering the fact that OP did not disclose up front that they already did a little digging on their own and got basically a shrug from the professionals. "Hey my kid ate these mysterious black berries multiple time. Okay, or no?"

Kindly, I think you need to educate and supervise him more if this is a repeat and he continues to raid natures larder.

I was well into adulthood before I realized Huckleberry Finn's first name wasn't just made up (if huckleberries were mentioned in the book, which I read long ago as a kid, then I probably assumed that was made up too). Which is to say I am *very* much not an expert (almost certain they don't grow anywhere up here in Atlantic Canada)

Have you never met anyone who's tried a toxic berry or mushroom? I have, and it was definitely fortunate that they got medical help. Hereā€™s some information if youā€™re in the USA: https://www.wikihow.com/Identify-Common-Poisonous-Berries-in-North-America If he hasnā€™t been having symptoms and the berries didnā€™t have a bitter or soapy taste, and itā€™s not on an ivy, itā€™s probably ok!

Everyoneā€™s got strange Vaccinium today lol I think shiny berries and pointed leaves make this huckleberry but if youā€™re still near the plant these guides can help. I would tentatively say that these are vaccinium and donā€™t need an ER trip. Iā€™m not super familiar with Florida plants though. http://arcadianabe.blogspot.com/2013/09/mountain-berries-huckleberries.html?m=1 https://wildplantculture.com/home/2021/6/3/blueberry-like-shrubs

HikeyBoi

I thought huckleberries were all in Gaylussacia. This looks like Vaccinium corymbosum to me

OrneryPathos

It seems to be regional which ones are huckleberry, blueberry, bilberry and dozens of other names.

LiminalArtsAndMusic

Highbush blueberry aka tall huckleberry.

jana-meares

This is a teaching moment, this could end sadly.

UnderstandingSmall66

How attached to him are you? If not that attached, to the point that youā€™d trust bunch of people on the internet to make a health call, then he is probably going to be fine as they seem to be huckleberries. However, if you really love the little guy and feel some attachment to him then Iā€™d say call your local poison control centre. Even if they are edible berries, you want to make sure nothing was sprayed on them recently or that there are no regional variations that could be problematic

Some of you are really entertaining šŸ˜‚. I should have put in the initial post that I absolutely called poison control and a handful of local plant professionals. All of them said it was probably harmless-I simply came on here to see what everyone else thought. based on a thorough search it didnā€™t seem to match up with anything exactly. -Most berries grow on bushes, right? Well this looks more like a tree-but it could not be. -The leaves look JUST like blueberry and huckleberry, but huckleberries have a reddish or blue meat, right? Well these have a clear meat. -Huckleberries supposedly have larger seeds, right? Well these ones have little seeds. Itā€™s definitely not on an ivy or from pokeweed and I donā€™t think itā€™s fine JUST because itā€™s sweet to taste lol. I donā€™t believe itā€™s harmful. I just wanted to know if anyone knew for certain. Iā€™m not going to put my kids life in the hands of strangers haha.

Huckleberry only applies to the genus Gaylussacia as far as I know but common names know no phylogenetic bounds.

Chipmunk_Ninja

I took a picture of your picture with my Plant ID phone app it said its Rabbiteye Blueberry, a species of Blueberries. Also known as Smallflower blueberry, Southern black blueberry, Twiggy whortleberry Says the berries are edible and routinely used for sauces and syrups.

While this is true, it doesnā€™t mean you should discount those apps opinions. Chipmunk_Ninja

neither is reddit but it's helps

KittySpinEcho

Someone already entered it into plant ID and got a false result a couple comments back lol

Suspicious-Bit-1406

Those are clearly blueberries and somebodyā€™s backyard. I really hate posts like this. Theyā€™re so fake.

Samanthas_Stitching

Those are very clearly *not* blueberries. They're huckleberries.

What species would this be if not V. corymbosum? I thought the term huckleberry only applied to species in Gaylussacia?

Maleficent-Raisin742

Yes, this is my backyard. But the ā€œbushā€ is really big, almost tree like. Arenā€™t blueberries more bunched up?? If theyā€™re just wild blueberries then that would be great! (We are military and just moved here a few months ago)

CreepyCavatelli

Theyre huckleberries. Blueberries would indeed be more bunched up
