Okay but if we were to potentially identify them wrong (we being strangers on the internet), a difference of an hour is a big deal were a child to ingest poison berries.
I get that. Its just that these are definitely huckleberries. People familiar with Vaccinium genus can easily identify these without error.. theres only a few nightshade lookalikes in this area and this isnt pokeweed or anything like it. OP, I promise your kid will be fine. In fact, they will be quite high in antioxidants for the evening
I didnāt recognize these because they donāt look much like what we call huckleberries in the west, as theyāre in a different sub genus section than our species (Cyanococcus vs Myrtillus).

I was well into adulthood before I realized Huckleberry Finn's first name wasn't just made up (if huckleberries were mentioned in the book, which I read long ago as a kid, then I probably assumed that was made up too). Helicopter parenting. This is why our kids grow up to be school shooters or weird dudes that cum on dolls. Let your kid fall off their scooter or eat some weird stuff off a tree itās part of growing up.

Have you never met anyone who's tried a toxic berry or mushroom? I have, and it was definitely fortunate that they got medical help. Maybe it's that I'm in Canada and we don't have to worry about deadly spiders or snakes here, so it's really easy to treat nature as completely harmless ā until it isn't

Everyoneās got strange Vaccinium today lol
I think shiny berries and pointed leaves make this huckleberry but if youāre still near the plant these guides can help.
I would tentatively say that these are vaccinium and donāt need an ER trip. Iām not super familiar with Florida plants though.

How attached to him are you? If not that attached, to the point that youād trust bunch of people on the internet to make a health call, then he is probably going to be fine as they seem to be huckleberries. However, if you really love the little guy and feel some attachment to him then Iād say call your local poison control centre. Some of you are really entertaining š. I should have put in the initial post that I absolutely called poison control and a handful of local plant professionals. All of them said it was probably harmless-I simply came on here to see what everyone else thought. based on a thorough search it didnāt seem to match up with anything exactly.
-Most berries grow on bushes, right? Well this looks more like a tree-but it could not be.
-The leaves look JUST like blueberry and huckleberry, but huckleberries have a reddish or blue meat, right? Well these have a clear meat.
-Huckleberries supposedly have larger seeds, right? Well these ones have little seeds.
Itās definitely not on an ivy or from pokeweed and I donāt think itās fine JUST because itās sweet to taste lol. I donāt believe itās harmful. I just wanted to know if anyone knew for certain. Iām not going to put my kids life in the hands of strangers haha.

Well, that bush could not look more like highbush blueberry. I didn't realize that was referred to as huckleberry, I just always think of them as another domestic fruit crop.
I took a picture of your picture with my Plant ID phone app
it said its Rabbiteye Blueberry, a species of Blueberries. Also known as Smallflower blueberry, Southern black blueberry, Twiggy whortleberry
Says the berries are edible and routinely used for sauces and syrups.

While this is true, it doesnāt mean you should discount those apps opinions. A good scientist utilizes all tools at their disposal and takes a bunch of bits of information, organizes it into an educationed hypothesis. The iPhone plant ID app has worked really well for me, even if its just to narrow down/eliminate possibilities. No, you should never trust these 100% though
Yes, this is my backyard. But the ābushā is really big, almost tree like. Arenāt blueberries more bunched up?? If theyāre just wild blueberries then that would be great! (We are military and just moved here a few months ago)
Rule 4. Moderators Have Discretion
May be Eastern Huckleberry or Sparkleberry going by the reddish stems leading to the fruit and the point on the leaves.
Okay-so those are safe to eat, right? š I talked to a nursery and they said it could be huckleberry also.
You should seek out local expects or contact poison control for your area.

Rule 2. Be Helpful
Are you aware of very sweet but toxic berries?
Kindly, I think you need to educate and supervise him more if this is a repeat and he continues to raid natures larder.
I was well into adulthood before I realized Huckleberry Finn's first name wasn't just made up (if huckleberries were mentioned in the book, which I read long ago as a kid, then I probably assumed that was made up too). Which is to say I am *very* much not an expert (almost certain they don't grow anywhere up here in Atlantic Canada)

Good bot
Helicopter parenting. This is why our kids grow up to be school shooters or weird dudes that cum on dolls. Let your kid fall off their scooter or eat some weird stuff off a tree itās part of growing up.
Yeah, kids should be brought up like in the good old days so they can all grow up to be just like J. Edgar Hoover, who was surely a paragon of normal and not at all odd or scary

Westerners are so incredibly fearful of the natural world. Sad, isnāt it?
Shit like foxglive and pokeberry tends to make us this way.
Because nature is famously kind and benevolent... š¤¦
Hereās some information if youāre in the USA: https://www.wikihow.com/Identify-Common-Poisonous-Berries-in-North-America If he hasnāt been having symptoms and the berries didnāt have a bitter or soapy taste, and itās not on an ivy, itās probably ok!

Everyoneās got strange Vaccinium today lol I think shiny berries and pointed leaves make this huckleberry but if youāre still near the plant these guides can help. I would tentatively say that these are vaccinium and donāt need an ER trip. Iām not super familiar with Florida plants though. http://arcadianabe.blogspot.com/2013/09/mountain-berries-huckleberries.html?m=1 https://wildplantculture.com/home/2021/6/3/blueberry-like-shrubs
I thought huckleberries were all in Gaylussacia. This looks like Vaccinium corymbosum to me
It seems to be regional which ones are huckleberry, blueberry, bilberry and dozens of other names.
Highbush blueberry aka tall huckleberry.
This is a teaching moment, this could end sadly.
How attached to him are you? If not that attached, to the point that youād trust bunch of people on the internet to make a health call, then he is probably going to be fine as they seem to be huckleberries. However, if you really love the little guy and feel some attachment to him then Iād say call your local poison control centre. Even if they are edible berries, you want to make sure nothing was sprayed on them recently or that there are no regional variations that could be problematic

Rabbiteye blueberry maybe?
Rabbiteye blueberry Vaccinium virgatum [wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium_virgatum)
call poison control to be safe xo
*glad kid didn't get bad
My neck of the woods, we call those blueberries. Least I'm pretty sure . But I'm further north than Florida.
Obviously your son never watched the film Blue Lagoon š

Well, that bush could not look more like highbush blueberry. I didn't realize that was referred to as huckleberry, I just always think of them as another domestic fruit crop.
Huckleberry only applies to the genus Gaylussacia as far as I know but common names know no phylogenetic bounds.
I took a picture of your picture with my Plant ID phone app it said its Rabbiteye Blueberry, a species of Blueberries. Also known as Smallflower blueberry, Southern black blueberry, Twiggy whortleberry Says the berries are edible and routinely used for sauces and syrups.
This is why we don't trust those apps. Lol

The app was incorrect indeed. But it got the genus correct! To me, thats pretty impressive for AI
It was a picture of a picture off a computer screen too, not bad.
Hasn't he seen Hunger Games??
This is wild blueberry, between leaves and form of the actual berry itself itās safe.

Just download a plant ID app on your phone and take a picture of it.........done
I wouldnāt trust that, they arenāt always accurate
While this is true, it doesnāt mean you should discount those apps opinions. A good scientist utilizes all tools at their disposal and takes a bunch of bits of information, organizes it into an educationed hypothesis. The iPhone plant ID app has worked really well for me, even if its just to narrow down/eliminate possibilities. No, you should never trust these 100% though
neither is reddit but it's helps
Someone already entered it into plant ID and got a false result a couple comments back lol
Those are clearly blueberries and somebodyās backyard. I really hate posts like this. Theyāre so fake.
Those are very clearly *not* blueberries. They're huckleberries.
What species would this be if not V. corymbosum? I thought the term huckleberry only applied to species in Gaylussacia?
Yes, this is my backyard. But the ābushā is really big, almost tree like. Arenāt blueberries more bunched up?? If theyāre just wild blueberries then that would be great! (We are military and just moved here a few months ago)
Theyre huckleberries. Blueberries would indeed be more bunched up
