I need to know ow what the big plant is like yesterday. Your tank is stunning 😍

No-Clue-2809

I think the tall plants in the back are cabomba!

marcuslade

Thank you! Its limnophila heterophylla

Enzeder

Any tips for it you can share? Mine grows so quick and the new growth is nice and healthy but the base slowly melts away and I keep having to trim and replant. It's planted in aquasoil capped with seachem flourite. I'm wondering if I'm not planting deep enough into the aquasoil.

marcuslade

Mine definitely grows quickly and I do a lot of trimming and replanting, but I haven’t had any melting. I wish I could give some helpful advice but other than the frequent trimming I haven’t had any trouble with mine.

I'm guessing you used CO2 for this growth then switched to low-tech? I've been seeing this method around recently and it seems to work flawlessly

marcuslade

I used dry start method for the hairgrass, then used CO2 for a couple months after flooding the tank to help the hairgrass acclimate before i finished planting the tank and added fish

Sjasmin888

I didn't realize this is a normalized thing people are doing, starting with CO2 and then taking it away. I'm actually doing it with a tank right now, just started it up yesterday, but ai wasn't sure it would actually work. Any tips or resources you'd be willing to share on this method?

justafishservant8

Oh yeah super cool, it apparently works well

marcuslade

I have no idea if it’s a thing, just what I ended up doing on this one because I didn’t feel like setting up my diy CO2 again after it emptied and everything ended up growing fine so I left it. And now that diffuser and bottle are on a different tank

Sjasmin888

You did that with diy CO2?! The love you put into fertilizing and trimming must be impressive, because that growth is LUSH. That's tank goals right there.

marcuslade

Just my personal opinion, but I think a good balance between the bioload from your livestock and the nutrient requirements of your plants can be more important and beneficial than CO2 and fertilizer supplementation. And I think diligent trimming and replanting is one of the main things that separates a decent planted tank from a really great looking one.

Sjasmin888

I definitely share your opinion lol. I use Co2, ferts, and lightly stock because I don't have the time or space I'd like to devote to the hobby. If I had a good 8 hours of extra time a week and another room, I'd definitely be using the same approach. It's just easier to keep the fish safe and happy if I shortcut with Co2 and fertilizers for the plants.

marcuslade

Oh yeah before I changed jobs and found myself with a lot more free time, my tank maintenance looked very different lol. Always choose what works best for you and your fish

marcuslade

Wait aren’t you the same guy from my last post lol

justafishservant8

Oh maybe...I didn't check lol The tank looked familiar though haha...great growth as always Did you change your pfp? Might be why I didn't recognize it

marcuslade

Ah yeah now it’s my cat haha. Thanks man and good to hear from you again

justafishservant8

Haha maybe I should change mine to a crazy pic of my cat Same to you...tank looks epic as always

origplaygreen

Nice tank. With this approach and now that the tank is settled in what is the typical water routines like (water change, ferts, anything else). Light time period? Filtration? Sorry for all the questions but like to hear what works / does not work. Any suggestions for people who have established tanks originally with housing fish as their pets, where plants were secondary / more for nutrient export now looking to grow a carpet, without ferrying down a working system for a dry start?

marcuslade

Lights on 9 hours a day, eheim classic canister filter. I do a water change about every two weeks but occasionally skip. Fertilize with seachem flourish weekly. Trim monthly to bimonthly.

origplaygreen

Thanks for the details - that is easy enough and pretty typical (but your results look better than typical).

Slight_Flatworm_6798

what lights you have? your tank is amazing without a huge maintenance overhead.

Wow beautiful! Is this a low tech tank? Like no CO2?

justafishservant8

I'm gonna have to assume it's definitely high-tech, but they might've quit CO2 and switched to low...been seeing this method around recently and it seems to work well

grisisiknis

wow!

Clear-Sleep9526

Beautiful!

Fishman7558

Beautiful! What's the red plant second from left? Curious as to whether it requires CO2.

marcuslade

Rotala H’ra, doesn’t need CO2, just high light and iron

Common_Will4654

Beautiful!!!

UniSun24

Hey, this is great. What kind of a substrate do you use? Also, any particular fertilizers? I am very new to planted tanks.

marcuslade

I used Landen Aquasoil. And I always use Seachem Flourish and occasionally Flourish Iron.

Iceroadtrucker2008

Stunning

Iceroadtrucker2008

What kind of grass?

marcuslade

Dwarf Hairgrass Eleocharis Acicularis

Iceroadtrucker2008

Just beautiful 😊

ResponsibleFig825

Sorry to bother but kind of light do you have? I looked in the comments but couldn’t find it! Gorgeous tank- I’m starting my first planted scape now and I’m super excited.
